Perfect for the Frech student or speaker. 5 out of 5 stars.

Reading this book wasn't just fun, but it really helped me in my French. I learned more in reading it than I have in all of my classes combined. There are some little changes in it, but that is because of the language difference and my over-reading the English version led me to know its wording too well. Still, that only made it more fun. I'd recommend this to any French student.

French Version of Harry Potter helps in school! 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought the French translation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire for my son who began his first year of French this year in Middle School. It has been great fun and encouragement for him. His teacher found it fun as well, reading short excerpts from it to the French class. Everyone loves Harry!

Like the energizer bunny, it just keeps going. 5 out of 5 stars.

I have to admit that I enjoyed book four less than the other three--when I read it in English. For some reason the story seemed fragmentary, overly complex, and poorly focused. I felt the movie brought a greater sense of direction and theme to the story. After having read the book again in French, however, I'm inclined to feel I misjudged it. I suppose, having to focus my own attention more closely to read the material in a foreign language, I saw the mental lines along which the story was constructed more clearly. The author is truely brilliant.

As before, this book in French, too, is a wonderful way to learn the language. Book four is definitely more complex in vocabularly and gramatical structure than the earlier books, just as it is in English, but also as in English, it coaxes the reader along, encouraging him or her to stretch a little bit to understand that word or that sentence, to be just a bit more patient and put it all together. Reading Harry in French gave me once again that same sense of joy I had when learning to read in the first place.

A truly magical tale! 5 out of 5 stars.

When I was about ten years old, I picked up a copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone reluctantly: everyone had told me to read it. I hated reading. Never could stand it. No matter what anyone said there was no such thing as a good book. It was always going to be that way too. I opened up the book and read the first page with very little motivation. In order to keep myself reading, I forced myself to read it aloud. As little as I wished to keep reading it, I couldn't put it down, and by the last line of the first paragraph, I needed to continue. The first paragraph itself was so amazing that I reread it two, three, four times. I flipped the page, finally onto the next chapter, and got more and more drawn in. Before long, I was on a magic journey, I was at a London zoo where a boaconstrictor had gotten free from its aquarium, I was purchasing books like Beginner's Transfiguration and One Thousand and One Magical Herbs and Fungi at Flourish and Blotts, I was soaring after the Golden Snitch on a Cleansweep 4, I was staring into the Mirror of Erised, and I was sneaking past a gigantic three headed dog named Fluffy to get through a trap door beneath its feet. Less than a year had gone by and before I knew it, I had read this book 40 times. For my eleventh birthday, I was given the second book and became even more obssessed. My friends began to call me Harriet Potter, and I had been given awards for being able to recite the first 200 pages of the first book (I was able to recite the entire book, but I tripped up on a sentence on page 203 and lost the ability to continue).
While not all of you might be as obsessively enthusiastic about this book as I have been, I guarentee that each and every one of you would adore it and all of the books that followed.

Editorial Review:

Young wizard-in-training Harry Potter has had his hands full during his first three years at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. As if studying spells and pleasing professors isn't enough, Harry has heard evil voices in the walls, rescued petrified students, fended off convicts escaped from magicians' prison, and played elaborate and grueling games of Quidditch. Between school sessions, he summers with the horrendous Dursleys, who seem to want nothing more than to crush our hero's spirit. Only time will tell how Harry will manage the certain dangers and escapades in store for him over the next few years.

The first three titles--in paperback--of J.K. Rowling's phenomenally popular series are now available in a handy boxed set, perfect for the legions of children whose big brothers and sisters have made off with their copies. These adventures are surely on the road to becoming classics; don't wait to collect them! The set includes Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Exceptional Book 5 out of 5 stars.

The millions of JK Rowling readers are not deluded - the book is one of the rare examples of excellent fiction that are currently available. Like many great books, it does take a few hundred pages to get used to JK Rowling and her style and subject, but by then you are hooked with her story and characters.

The most unbalanced book of the series 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Now that Cornelius Fudge has been forced to resign from the Ministry of Magic it seems that the whole world is finally supporting Harry Potter. But nothing is farther from the truth: the dark forces surrounding the sinister Lord Voldemort are preparing themselves for the big fight and Harry Potter feels this very strongly. Harry never really trusted Draco, son of known Death Eater Lucius Malfoy who finally got captured and put in Azkaban Prison, but when Harry spots him at Borgin and Burkes he knows that Draco is up to no good. Harry is convinced that Draco is actually becoming a Death Eater like his father and will do everything to prove this. But his closest friends Hermione and Ron think that he is seeing ghosts. Even Professor Dumbledore does not buy the warnings that Harry is proclaiming. Again Harry feels that he has to fight this battle on his own.

Finally J.K. Rowling did it: she completely lost the balance between story and exposition. Whereas in the previous books she tended to overdo only slightly these side stories, in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince she completely goes beyond. Even the way she weaves the background stories into her narrative is becoming tedious. Again and again the Pensive is used to shed some more light on the main characters. The exclamation "Oh, not again!" truly must have been on the lips of many people that read this sixth episode of the Potters series. Even the extra character of Professor Horace Slughorn pales in comparison to the previous Defence Against the Dark Arts teachers and must succumb to the big monster of exposition. True. For most of the fans this background information is useful and interesting, but the author could also have put this in a separate Harry Potter companion or even an appendix. Many parts of the book suffer from this flagrant imbalance and more often than not I did feel compelled to skip chapters.

Amazingly enough, it turns out that Rowling did somehow realize that she was loosing the attention of the reader and decided to completely turn the rudder in the final chapters. Out of the blue the pace of the story is boosted and suddenly the book becomes quite a thriller. Maybe the final chapters of the Half-Blood Prince are to be listed as some of the best of the series so far. To say more than this would indeed ruin the experience. So my advice: gather (quite) some courage to get through the main part of the book and you will be awarded!

Ausgezeichnet! 5 out of 5 stars.

Preface: I am not a native German speaker and I read the book in English before reading it in German.

While reading a book about flubberworms and magic potions is difficult from the standpoint of new vocabulary, it is so exciting and satisfying when you realize that you are enjoying the story and not just the struggle to understand a foreign language. This is definitely a good way to maintain or add to a good, but not perfect facility with German as a second language.

HERVORRAGEND! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I originally read this book in English, which is my native language and loved it. I later read the book in German to try and improve my language skills, and I got so caught up in the story, I forgot how difficult it was to read a novel in a foreign language! The plot is enchanting and the fantastic characters made the book a really enjoyable read. People, young and old, will fall in love with Harry all over again when they read about the dilemmas he encounters in his 3rd year at Hogwarts. For native German speakers, alle die Deutsche Kinde and foreign language students like myself, Harry Potter und der Gefange von Azkaban will be a favourite!

Very poor translation 1 out of 5 stars.
16 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I am a Russian-English translator, and a fan of the Harry Potter books. A friend gave me the Russian version of the first book, and I was quite interested to see how it went. To be blunt, it is poorly translated, and appears to be the result of the Russian publisher hoping to get something on the shelves as soon as possible. A great deal of Rowling's humor lies in her turns of phrase, and the translator made only half-hearted attempts to convey these, if he made the attempt at all. I frequently wondered about his grasp of the English language. Most baffling to me was that the translator changed Neville's pet toad into a turtle--but only on some pages. I cannot recommend this book even as a curiosity, since that would only encourage the publisher to continue putting out shoddy work.

Harry Potter makes it to Russia 5 out of 5 stars.

I have been reading the Harry Potter novels for ages, and they will always be my favorite. I first read them in English two years ago, since of the two languages I know, English would have to be my better one. But last year, while visiting my family in Russia, I found and bought the translated version of books 1-4.

In my oppinion, the translation wasn't perfect, and not as good as it could have been. Nothing much was changed, but I found a strange loss of humor. I was more than surprised to find that my friends were also reading these books in Russia, and I'm happy with the translation since it's better than nothing. I suggest if you know or are learning Russian, and have read Harry Potter in another language, that you definately buy this book to compare. It's the first book in the series.

Editorial Review:

Finally in a Russian translation, the first book in the Harry Potter series (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone ).

Always a classic 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The first installment of the most popular books, Harry Potter e' la pietra filosofale, is nearly perfect. The only quibble I have is that they've changed the names of many of the characters,(Example: Albus Dumbledore is Albus Silente etc.) which makes the reading a bit confusing if you've already read it in english, or seen the movies. The language isn't too difficult for the second language leaner and should be a cake walk for the native speaker. I learned dozens of new words and idioms and, after more than three years since living in Italy, relearned hundreds more. Great book! I hope to read the rest in Italian someday.

Great way to learn a little Italian!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is just the right level for beginners of Italian. Easy reading, lots of conversation and idioms. I hope to graduate to some of the Italian masters some day, but for now this was a welcome addition to stuffy textbooks and conversation tapes. Most of the series is available in Italian through Amazon.

Too bad the movies don't have an Italian track with Italian subtitles to go with the books. Might be a lot easier to learn another language.
