Pocket book for the supermarket 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This purse-size book is indespensible! It lists total carbs, fiber, net carbs, protein, fat, and calories to help you make the best choices, or even endulge a little while knowing how much you are doing so!

My copy is dog-eared and I carry it everywhere with me. When I think I might want something (like grapes, for example), I can look them up in the booklet right there in the supermarket and decide if they will fit into my diet plan or not. (The grapes were too high in carbs, in case you were wondering.)

The book also lists many common and name brand items, both high and low carb.

It is split into several sections such as beverages; milk, cream, butter, and yogurt; breads, muffins and crackers; fruit; pancakes, waffles, and breakfast pastries; poultry; sweeteners, jams, and syrups; etc.

It even has a section for "dining out" with tips on dining away from home, and a "fast food" section with counts for popular foods at fast food restaurants.

If you are watching either your fat or your carbs, you need this book!

Editorial Review:

Dr. Atkins' New Carbohydrate Gram Counter has a slightly misleading name. While grams of carbohydrate are listed for various foods, there are also protein and fat grams listed for each entry. With more than 1,200 listings, including hundreds of brand-name products, this makes a handy, portable reference. It should be noted, however, that that the Gram Counter is really meant as a companion to Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution; the brief dietary information included in the introduction to the Gram Counter isn't of much use by itself.

This book is still the best one out there.... 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I am a professional who has been reading and studying the field of supplements. This book is the best that I have come across. Not only is it the most complete, but the supplements in it were used in Dr. Atkin's clinical practice. This is were the rubber hits the road, and the concrete real life information that gives this book credibility. If I were to buy only one book on this subject, it would be this one, even over the encycolpedia type books.

Good Supplement Information 4 out of 5 stars.

This book covers uses for various supplements that are not always covered by other vitamin books.
The information is very helpful, but a few things are a little out of date, mostly because of what was or wasn't available when the book was written.
Overall, a good addition to your nutrition library if you're interested in using supplements or knowing more about what certain nutrients do.

Editorial Review:

Designed to catapult your body into a state of fat meltdown, Dr. Atkins's diet has taken America by storm. It targets insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. The bodies of most overeaters are continually in a state of hyperinsulinism; their bodies are so adept at releasing insulin to help convert excess carbohydrates to fat that there's always too much of the hormone circulating through the body. This puts the body into a bind; it always wants to store fat. Even when people with hyperinsulinism try to lose weight--especially when they cut fat but increase carbohydrate consumption--their efforts will fail. This is why Dr. Atkins refers to insulin as "the fat-producing hormone."

Dr. Atkins's diet is extremely low in carbohydrates, which helps to regulate insulin production and decrease circulating insulin; less insulin soon results in less fat storage and fewer food cravings. The diet is far from torturous, though--those who've tried it attest that hunger is not a part of this plan. Ninety percent of Dr. Atkins's patients--more than 25,000 of them--have experienced dramatic weight loss. The book includes recipes for such luscious, low-carb dishes as lobster soup, zabaglione, sea bass, and blueberry ice cream, and even includes a carbohydrate gram counter and menus.

About the book - not the diet 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I'm assuming you're reading this because you want to know if this book is worth your money and time, and whether or not you should read it.

If this is not the case, you can skip the rest of this review, and read most of the others - which I have found to be largely testimonial, and will tell you what those reviewers think about the diet.

If you want to know something about the book: read on.

Firstly, I had a very difficult time reading this book - in fact, I skipped most of it, because a very large portion of the book is made up of extended testimonial-like cases. This made the book feel like marketing - and even if you're not as suspicious of marketing as I am, it wears on your nerves quite quickly if you approach the book wanting to learn something about the diet. Additionally, Mr. Atkins' tone made it sound like the diet was a religion or a cult. This made me want to try it even less.

Secondly, Mr. Atkins also seems to be encouraging a sedentary lifestyle. In the portion of the book that I read, he never once mentioned physical activity of any sort other than eating. This turned me off, as I believe that one of the major sources of obesity, especially in highly "industrialized" countries, is lack of physical activity. In short, he does not promote a balanced lifestyle any more than a balanced diet.

Thirdly, Mr. Atkins makes several factual and logical errors. He mentions our ancient hunter ancestors, but fails to mention that they were also gatherers: fruits, roots, nuts, seeds, honey ... all with lots of carbs. And people 200 years ago may have consumed much less sugar than we do now, but he doesn't think that perhaps they weren't obese because of their diet, but because of the amount of physical activity demanded of the large majority of the population just to stay alive.

Fourthly and finally, the book gave me no information I could not have found on the internet.

To sum up, is the book worth your time and money? You be the judge, but for me, it wasn't; I can recommend neither the book nor the diet.

One Big Conspiracy 1 out of 5 stars.
12 of 28 people found this review helpful.

This is the sort of book for paranoid people addicted to conspiracy theories. Couple that with a few bad experiences with conventional dentistry and you have a sizable audience that would rather believe a fanciful lie than the mundane truth.

Though I don't agree with most of what's written in this book, I don't regret buying it. It teaches me how to con ignorant people with high tech jargon, pseudo scientific theories and conspiracy theories. If people BELIEVE that amalgams or metal restorations are the cause of their headaches, fatigue or whatever symptoms, then removing them will definitely cure them. That's how faith healing works.

The only reason why I don't use amalgam in my practice is because I do cosmetic dentistry. If the patient does not mind the colour, amalgam is definitely a superior direct filling material for Class 2 and subgingival preps. I have absolutely no qualms about having that done for myself or any member of my family.

Toxicity? Sure, some people are affected by amalgams and anything can be toxic to somebody, but let's not forget that these cases are extremely rare (perhaps less than 10 on this planet and most of them would be Chinese). There are literally thousands of tests and studies establishing amalgams as safe filling materials over the last 100 years. There are numerous reputable studies that show how safe amalgams are. If Dr Breiner has been to Asia where we have much healthier diets and lifestyles, he may notice that we also have many healthy 70 to 90-year-old Asian men and women who have gold and amalgam-filled teeth in their mouths.

Being knowledgeable in TCM, I can tell the gullible supporters of this book that his sloppy diagram on acupuncture meridians is completely inaccurate and drawn by someone who has no knowledge of acupuncture whatsoever! How easy it is to con people with misinformation from the exotic East.

Are composites totally safe? The incidence of allergic reactions to composites (very low) is higher than that of amalgam toxicity. This is something the author failed to inform us. All his anecdotal evidence are almost laughable as they are not supported by independent studies and sceptical parties. One patient is even under psychiatric care. Not one case he mentioned can be conclusively attributed to amalgam. Mercury can be very toxic, but after tituration and amalgamation, the metal remains in the solid state and is not absorbed by the body. It's different from inhaling mercury vapour daily, injecting or ingesting mercury or mercuric compounds.

The issue of cavitation is also invalid. Dr Breiner shows us a few blurry xrays with apparent radiolucencies and tells us they are cavitations. What histological analysis did he do to confirm that it's of periodontal origin? Does Dr Briener even understand the basic science of what happens to periodontal ligaments after an extraction? Most patients wouldn't know - which is why it is so easy to cheat them with non-factual, unsupported theories. I can almost guarantee that if he does a CT scan on the jaws, the "cavitations" on his blurred OPGs would all "disappear".

What about his "whole body" approach to orthodontics? He shows us 2 sets of pictures of identical twins, one having undergone conventional ortho and one having undergone MPA/HT treatment. Well, where are the stone models? Let's have a closer look at the teeth in occlusion. How different are they? How did he manage to correct crowding without extractions? There are only competent orthodontists and incompetent ones. It's doesn't matter if they use conventional orthodontics. Properly done, the approach and outcome can be equally holistic and the patient will not have TMJ problems.

Especially shocking to the profession, must be Dr Briener's report on the canine tooth that "righted itself" after the chiropractor put her body in perfect alignment. This is something that made every one of my chiropractor friends laugh out loud. Why didn't Dr Briener publish this miraculous finding in a journal? Could it be that the case somehow cannot be replicated in an objectively scrutinised environment?

Propagating such beliefs will only spark panic, paranoia and various psychosomatic "illnesses". Worse, many patients may seek unnecessary and possibly invasive treatment for things like "cavitation". Following Breiner's protocols for "detox", patients will only be paying a fortune for otherwise very simple dental work. Make no mistake about it, this book actually recommends more unnecessary procedures than your average money-driven dentist.

There is one basic flaw in this voting system. People who gravitate towards these pages are those who support the book. The reviewer who writes anything negative not only needs to review the book, he actually needs to convince the brainwashed fans here that their idol is wrong. Democracy rules here and the majority is right even when it's wrong.

My lifeline! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

When I started the Atkins diet I wasn't writing down what I was eating or how much. The weight wasn't moving. After I bought this book and started my daily diary, it was amazing. I saw the mistakes I was making and the weight started to just melt away. Would highly recommend that anyone starting the Atkins diet get this journal.

Wow - Everything you need in one book! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Wow. I have never seen a solutions manual as amazing as this one! There are answers and explinations to every question in the book.. This means not just odds, not just evens, but both! On top of that, it also has answers and explinations on all example problems throughout the chapters! As if that weren't enough, they also have tests at the end of each chapter and a "final exam" at the end of the book to test your knowledge of the information. It is the MOST in depth solutions manual I have ever seen. Definitely spend your money on this. It's more than worth it!

Perfect 5 out of 5 stars.
