Editorial Review:

This thorough, self-paced guide to Adobe InDesign CS3 is ideal for beginning users who want to master the key features of this program, while readers who already have some experience with InDesign can use this book to familiarize themselves with InDesign CS3's newest features. Using step-by-step, project-based lessons, each chapter contains a project that builds upon the reader's growing knowledge of the program, while review questions at the end of each chapter reinforce the most important skills learned in each lesson. The companion CD contains all the assets readers will need to work through each project in the book. Adobe InDesign CS3, Adobe's page layout and design software, has been updated to accelerate user productivity with loads of new features: new Photoshop effects--including gradient feathering, inner shadows, and glows--that you can apply to objects on a page; finer transparency controls, which let you apply transparency settings independently to an object's fill, stroke, and content for more complex visual looks; numerous productivity enhancements; advanced find/change features; new table and cell styles; export to XHTML, and more.

Educational instructor notes—created to help teachers plan, organize, and time their lessons—are available for this book (and for other Classroom in a Book titles) at www.peachpit.com/instructorresources.

Well written and concise 5 out of 5 stars.

One of the better written MS Press books. Very clear and easy to understand, if you have a copy of Vista do the labs with it. The practice tests on the CD are close to the real thing so allot yourself time to do them. The test I took recently (and passed) had 8 Sims so be sure you can physically do a job at hand rather than "multiple-guess" the answers. Overall a good book for taking and passing your MCTS test.

Editorial Review:

The authors of Learning Python show you enough essentials of the Python scripting language to enable you to begin solving problems right away, then reveal more powerful aspects of the language one at a time. This approach is sure to appeal to programmers and system administrators who have urgent problems and a preference for learning by semi-guided experimentation.

First off, Learning Python shows the relationships among Python scripts and their interpreter (in a mostly platform-neutral way). Then, the authors address the mechanics of the language itself, providing illustrations of how Python conceives of numbers, strings, and other objects as well as the operators you use to work with them. Dictionaries, lists, tuples, and other data structures specific to Python receive plenty of attention including complete examples.

Authors Mark Lutz and David Ascher build on that fundamental information in their discussions of functions and modules, which evolve into coverage of namespaces, classes, and the object-oriented aspects of Python programming. There's also information on creating graphical user interfaces (GUIs) for Python applications with Tkinter.

In addition to its careful expository prose, Learning Python includes exercises that both test your Python skills and help reveal more elusive truths about the language.

Editorial Review:

Windows Vista is Microsoft's most important software release in more than a decade. It offers users an abundance of new and upgraded features that were more than five years in the making: a gorgeous, glass-like visual overhaul; superior searching and organization tools; a multimedia and collaboration suite; and above all, a massive, top-to-bottom security-shield overhaul. There's scarcely a single feature of the older versions of Windows that hasn't been tweaked, overhauled, or replaced entirely.

But when users first encounter this beautiful new operating system, there's gonna be a whole lotta head-scratchin', starting with trying to figure out which of the five versions of Vista is installed on the PC (Home, Premium, Business, Enterprise, Ultimate).

Thankfully, Windows Vista: The Missing Manual offers coverage of all five versions. Like its predecessors, this book from New York Times columnist, bestselling author, and Missing Manuals creator David Pogue illuminates its subject with technical insight, plenty of wit, and hardnosed objectivity for beginners, veteran standalone PC users, and those who know their way around a network. Readers will learn how to: Navigate Vista's elegant new desktop Locate anything on your hard drive quickly with the fast, powerful, and fully integrated search function Use the Media Center to record TV and radio, present photos, play music, and record any of the above to DVD Chat, videoconference, and surf the Web with the vastly improved Internet Explorer 7 tabbed browser Build a network for file sharing, set up workgroups, and connect from the road Protect your PC and network with Vista's beefed up security And much more.

This jargon-freeguide explains Vista's features clearly and thoroughly, revealing which work well and which don't. It's the book that should have been in the box!

Better Title: Intro to Statistics using Excel Add-ins 3 out of 5 stars.
25 of 25 people found this review helpful.

On the positive side, this book has many excellent case studies and examples. It is well written and interesting. However, I was disappointed, as I was expecting use of Excel to rigorously solve decision making and data analysis problems. The focus of the book is mostly traditional statistics solved using a group of commercial add-ins for Excel. If this is what you want, then the book would get five stars. However, for data analysis and decision making, I think a more thorough treatment using Excel without relying so much on the add-ins would have been appropriate.

Editorial Review:

Master data analysis, modeling, and spreadsheet use with DATA ANALYSIS AND DECISION MAKING WITH MICROSOFT EXCEL! With a teach-by-example approach, student-friendly writing style, and complete Excel integration, this quantitative methods text provides you with the tools you need to succeed. Margin notes, boxed-in definitions and formulas in the text, enhanced explanations in the text itself, and stated objectives for the examples found throughout the text make studying easy. Problem sets and cases provide realistic examples that enable you to see the relevance of the material to your future as a business leader. The CD-ROMs packaged with every new book include the following add-ins: the Palisade Decision Tools Suite (@RISK, StatTools, PrecisionTree, TopRank, and RISKOptimizer); and SolverTable, which allows you to do sensitivity analysis. All of these add-ins have been revised for Excel 2007.

Word 2007 for Dummies 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a very straightforward book on Word 2007. Very easy to navigate and read. I learned a lot from it.

Some Help 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It doesn't answer the nasty pagination problem I encountered. Word would stop numbering pages after a couple in a file, go back to the previous page and renumber it incorrectly, then not number the ones after it consecutively just keep placing the same number on each page, etc. There appears to be no way to number pages except in headers or footers either, as far as WORD FOR DUMMIES indicates, as best I can tell. There were one or two other places WORD FOR DUMMIES turned out to be clueless, too; but it's better than nada. Word is vastly inferior word processing software. WordPerfect is much better. Writers I know despise Word, and curse having to use it because publishing adopted it as the standard for submissions. It is a shame it was adopted so widely, apparently by executives in companies who were sold a bill of goods about it by Microsoft, when they would never have to actually use it. Pretty typical executive behavior--making decisions about various office systems their underlings will have to use without actual facts.

Editorial Review:

  • Dan Gookin's For Dummies guides to Word have consistently led the pack, selling more than 1.7 million copies in previous editions
  • The author's irreverent sense of humor and crystal-clear prose make getting up to speed on Word a snap
  • Thoroughly updated to cover Word's new interface, new file format options, and new collaboration and connectivity features
  • An essential resource for everyone who wants to hit the ground running with Word 2007 and make the most of all the new features
