Office 2007 All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've used word and excel extensively since 1995 in
the work place.
I got this book for my 42 year old daughter who is just
beginning to come around to PC's. I know how much i hate
scrolling or searching thru MS's Helps.
Well, the book arrived today. I was IMPRESSED.
I'm going to order a copy for myself.
Thank you Peter Weverka.

THIS IS AN IMPRESSIVE BOOK.

I was on crunch time at Northeastern Illinois University and was really in a bind with books, expecially the prices. So of course, Amazon had a great price for this book and I was saved by it. The book is EXCELLENT and I think even after the class I will keep it because it has a plethera of information. Thank you.

Excellent learning tool 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book for my CIS 120 class (that is intro to micro-computers). This book is an excellent teaching guide to learn everything there is to know about Microsoft Office software. It is very detailed and it gives you examples and you will learn hands on. This is an excellent book for anyone that need to learn or even need a refresher course. This book have step-by-step instructions. I highly recommend this book.

Useful but... 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The section on financial formulas contains some horribly incorrect information (totally wrong on NPV interpretation) and for some reason skips a description of IRR - one of the most used financial functions. Otherwise a good introduction to Excel 2007.

EXCEL 2007 3 out of 5 stars.

I have several of these books on different subjects and although it is a good training or reference book, I would have preferred VISUALS as they are much easier for me to follow. What I like about the DUMMY line, is the reading material is in simple terms and not that WAY OUT THERE technical terms that I doubt the real computer geeks even understand.

Excel for Dummies is Excellent 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I also own a copy of Windows XP for Dummies Quick Reference by the same author. I was very happy with Windows XP for Dummies which is why I decided to purchase this book. Greg Harvey, PHD does a great job with both books.

Consistent with the "Dummies" style, you will find plenty of explanations in plain English, "get in, get out" information, icons and other navigational ads, tear-out cheat sheets, top ten lists and lots of humor and entertainment.

Before buying this book I tried an on-line video course to help me learn Excel. This book is so much more helpful than anything that I used previously to learn Excel.

Ok for the moderate user 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

As with all these "bible" software books. They are really a handy reference. Particularly for the moderate excel user.

More seasoned users could do just as well with the hundreds of online help areas centered around excel. I picked up this book to help me get over the "ribbon" hurdle with excel; but find I simply use online help rather than cracking open this book.

I give it 3 stars b.c it does what it professes to do.

It's a good overview of Agile, but feels a bit contrived 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I generally like this book, and find it's content helpful. However, the examples chosen for the book focus on "broken" situations that seem to go beyond just project management and development methodology, and demonstrate that somehow magically, Scrum saves the day.

While I like the optimism and positive-thinking these examples encourage, it doesn't match reality. When I walk into a messy, complex situation, apply Scrum, and the world doesn't turn to pink roses, I'm left wondering if I did something wrong...I'm frustrated...I'm angry...I'm confused. The examples setup an expectation of outcomes that is too high to be reached generally, and I think some examples of failures and lessons learned would have rounded out this book much better.

In the real-world, "perfection is the enemy of success" and I think that's what I find missing from this book. All of the outcomes represent a perfect implementation of Scrum to solve the problem in the example.

Editorial Review:

Apply the principles of Scrum, one of the most popular agile programming methods, to software project management—and focus your team on delivering real business value. Author Ken Schwaber, a leader in the agile process movement and a co-creator of Scrum, brings his vast expertise to helping you guide the product and software development process more effectively and efficiently. Help eliminate the ambiguity into which so many software projects are borne, where vision and planning documents are essentially thrown over the wall to developers. This high-level reference describes how to use Scrum to manage complex technology projects in detail, combining expert insights with examples and case studies based on Scrum. Emphasizing practice over theory, this book explores every aspect of using Scrum, focusing on driving projects for maximum return on investment.

Got the book a couple of weeks ago and am about 350 pages into it. Although I have only scratched the surface, I've been able to put together a couple of macros that did exactly what I was asked to accomplish. Great Book.

It Helps to Know the Lingo 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I just switched to Word 2007. I found that the terms for commands had changed so that I had to read the whole book in order to find what I wanted because I could not always find the term I was familiar with in the index. The book does cover most of what is needed in order to use Word 2007. I can't fault the writers for the changes that Microsoft made in their belief that they were making the program simpler to use.

Word 2007 for Dummies 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a very straightforward book on Word 2007. Very easy to navigate and read. I learned a lot from it.

Editorial Review:

  • Dan Gookin's For Dummies guides to Word have consistently led the pack, selling more than 1.7 million copies in previous editions
  • The author's irreverent sense of humor and crystal-clear prose make getting up to speed on Word a snap
  • Thoroughly updated to cover Word's new interface, new file format options, and new collaboration and connectivity features
  • An essential resource for everyone who wants to hit the ground running with Word 2007 and make the most of all the new features
