Editorial Review:

Windows Vista may be the next big thing, but it still contains enough quirks and unaccountable behaviors to vex anyone. This unique guide not only discusses the most irritating features of the latest Microsoft operating system and how to get around them, but also explains how to improve Windows and do more with the software than Microsoft intended. You'll find information on setup, installation, upgrade from other Windows versions, the revamped interface, new security features, user accounts, troubleshooting, and the markedly improved Internet Explorer 7. Other chapters cover a wide range of key topics: Media Center - tips on photos, videos, music, TV tuners, HD, and the media center engine The Registry - explains the background and tools for working with Windows' database of settings Tinkering Techniques - offers hacking-style customization and problem-solving topics Networking and Wireless - includes LAN setup, WiFi sniffers and access points, connection sharing, firewalls, routers, and FTP Scripting and Automation - introduces simple programming using the Windows Scripting Host for automating repetitive tasks No other book takes our patented cranky, solutions-oriented approach. Our collection of tips, tools and techniques will improve your experience with Windows Vista, so you can control the OS -- rather than the other way around.

Tried another 4 out of 5 stars.

Programming/scripting is not natural for me! It is hard work. This is the third book on AS 3.0 I've tried. The other books did not work for me. I need a book that will tell me what to do in a very elementary manner. I can then put it in context. For example:

1. This is how you script interactivity in a button (code)
2. This is what it is doing
3. This is what the various segments of code mean
etc.

This is the way I learned HTML. I looked up the code to do a given item. Over time if morphed into a thorough understanding of what HTML is and how to do it. This book enables me to do something similar. It takes basic AS 3.0, shows you how to do it then gives the information so you can put it in context. I'm relieved and grateful to find a book that allows me to construct the learning in a way that best fits me. THANK YOU!

But it doesn’t stop there: sections on interactivity, sound, and video have been fully updated to demonstrate best practices in ActionScript 3.0, as well as the latest in Flash's video technology.

“Who says you can’t bottle experience? Between these covers is a wealth of information: a clear, logical approach to finding and eliminating bugs. This is an absolute must-have book for anyone who develops, tests, or supports software for Microsoft Windows.”

-- Bob Wilton, Escalation Engineer, Critical Problem Resolution Team, Microsoft

“An excellent reference for both intermediate and advanced debuggers: highly practical, and filled with tricks and strategies. This book stands out from all other Win32 debugging literature, thanks to its in-depth examples—including resolving intricate problems like stack and heap corruptions.”

The First In-Depth, Real-World, Insider’s Guide to Powerful Windows Debugging

For Windows developers, few tasks are more challenging than debugging—-or more crucial. Reliable and realistic information about Windows debugging has always been scarce. Now, with over 15 years of experience two of Microsoft’s system-level developers present a thorough and practical guide to Windows debugging ever written.

Mario Hewardt and Daniel Pravat cover debugging throughout the entire application lifecycle and show how to make the most of the tools currently available—-including Microsoft’s powerful native debuggers and third-party solutions.

To help you find real solutions fast, this book is organized around real-world debugging scenarios. Hewardt and Pravat use detailed code examples to illuminate the complex debugging challenges professional developers actually face. From core Windows operating system concepts to security, Windows® Vista™ and 64-bit debugging, they address emerging topics head-on—and nothing is ever oversimplified or glossed over!

This book enables you to

  • Master today’s most powerful Windows debugging tools, including NTSD, CDB, WinDbg, KD, and ADPlus
  • Debug code that wasn’t designed or written for easy debugging
  • Understand debuggers “under the hood,” and manage symbols and sources efficiently
  • Debug complex memory corruptions related to stacks and heaps
  • Resolve complex security problems
  • Debug across processes: identity tracking, RPC debugger extensions, and tracking IPCs with Ethereal
  • Find and fix resource leaks, such as memory and handle leaks.
  • Debug common thread synchronization problems
  • Learn when and how to write custom debugger extensions
  • Perform “postmortem debugging” using crash dumps and Windows Error Reporting

Taking Windows Analysis to the Next Step... 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Harlan poured his clear love of incident response and of the forensic profession into this book. Windows Forensic Analysis dives into many exceptional topics that are routinely overlooked in similar material. The entire book covers many novel analysis techniques and topics, the registry analysis chapter and the file analysis chapter discusses many detailed artifacts and areas of examination during forensics that up until this was published was only discussed deep inside forensic circles or discovered through hard earned on-the-ground experience. The book's only drawback is that it covers too many topics and the chapters do not flow together as well as I would have hoped. A single chapter is excellent, but in many cases it doesn't lead you to the next one. I also found that the entire book could have been written on just registry forensics. However, in order to create broad appeal, the registry section was probably shortened. You can tell Harlan has a lot more to tell. Finally, the CDROM companion could have had more polish to the file layout as finding some of the tools is slightly confusing upon initial glance. Even with these minor drawbacks, the information in each chapter is phenomenal. I recommend this book to anyone looking to advance their understanding of the Windows analysis environment.

Editorial Review:

The only book available on the market that addresses and discusses in-depth forensic analysis of Windows systems. Windows Forensic Analysis DVD Toolkit takes the reader to a whole new, undiscovered level of forensic analysis for Windows systems, providing unique information and resources not available anywhere else. This book covers both live and post-mortem response collection and analysis methodologies, addressing material that is applicable to law enforcement, the federal government, students, and consultants. This book also brings this material to the doorstep of system administrators, who are often the front line troops when an incident occurs, but due to staffing and budgets do not have the necessary knowledge to effectively respond. The companion DVD for the book contains significant, unique materials (movies, spreadsheet, code, etc.) not available any place else, as they were created by the author.

Definitely 5 Stars 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I come to this as a database developer with 25 years experience and with absolutely no knowledge of SharePoint. I rarely write a review. But on this book, I had to do so.

When I first started to administer and develop in SharePoint, I knew nothing about it. So I got 5 books. I still use one other book (the development book) for the heavy lifting but most of the time I use Mastering Windows SharePoint Services by Callahan.

I have several friends in other organizations that administer SharePoint. The ones who have training and knowledge love it. Those that do not, hate it. This is one way to get that information.

First, Callahan shows in detail how to install and secure SharePoint as he lists the underlying functions such as email, searching, and accounts.

Then, one command at a time he takes us through the process of all the services - lists, libraries, web parts, work spaces, and others.

Next, he demonstrates how granular the rights and privileges can be given. Specific users can see, access, use, or modify exactly what the site director decides while he monitors the activity.

Each step of every example is demonstrated throughout. Then the background information is discussed in depth.

Whether you are new to SharePoint or you are an administrator on it, this book will answer most of your questions.
