The Guide of What to Do Before Even Thinking About Law School 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Any guide to law school should start with the pointed questions of "why do you want to be a lawyer?" and "what do you think lawyers do?" Getting into law school (especially the "best" ones), making it through academically, getting a summer associate position and then a post graduation job can all be nerve wracking enough, but what then? Right, you are a lawyer and, unless your dad paid for school, your first loan payment is coming in 6 months and will be coming for the next 10 or 15 years minimum. In short, you had better like your job because you will be living it for a while.

I am a lawyer. I have obviously gone to law school, which I enjoyed and did not find stressful in the least. Being a lawyer is very different from law school. You law school students out there, you will learn more in your first 2 months of being a lawyer then you did all through law school. That stress you felt first year--thinking "how can I cram all this stuff into my brain and then spew it out again for a decent grade?" is nothing compared to the stress of answering to a client whose livelihood may depend on whether you got the answer right and who likely only gave you half the relevant facts. Those nights that you spent studying late into the night and thinking that all this hard work will pay off, embrace that life style because it will not get better and you will be required to account for every 6 minutes of your day. Being a lawyer is exactly that--a life style. It is not a job, not for anyone who is successful as a lawyer. It is not all court room drama and big paychecks and traveling to fun places. There may be some of that but it is also long hours reviewing tens of thousands of documents in a windowless room in a strip mall warehouse in Tulsa. And anyone who thinks things get easier when you make partner, think again. It gets harder because you don't just have to do the legal work, but you have to get clients and manage the firm too. The government attorneys may have it a bit easier on average, but I have certainly called one at 10 pm before and they have picked up the phone, so I wouldn't bet on it.

Also those of you who think that getting a law degree is a "gateway" degree to a broad array of job possibilities--wrong. Getting a law degree qualifies you, sometimes, to be a lawyer. There may be a number of people out there who have law degrees, and have a non legal job, but the high likelihood is that they had other qualifications that got them that job.

So all of that is a way of saying...understand what you are getting into because it can be a very expensive and unhappy mistake if you do not. Before you pay a dime to a law school, get a job in a law firm for the summer or a few months. See if it is something that you can enjoy. If you are 23 or 25, do something else for a year or two and see if you are thinking law just because you don't have a different idea. Law school will always be there. I went to law school when I was 31 and the timing was good because it was actually a nice break from work. I am generally happy in my law firm job and have been at the same place for 8 years. If you decide that law is your path, go for it, but try to avoid having the realization that it is not your path and that you are stuck with 250k in loans after your first year as a lawyer, which a very large number of people do.

Editorial Review:

Law School Confidential is written for students about to embark on this three-year odyssey by students who have successfully survived. It demystifies the life-altering thrill ride that defines an American legal education by providing a comprehensive, blow-by-blow, chronological account of what to expect. It arms students with a thorough overview of the contemporary law school experience. This isn't the advice of graying professors or battle-scarred practitioners decades removed from law school. Miller has assembled a panel of recent graduates to act as "mentors", all of whom are perfectly positioned to shed light on what law school is like today. From taking the LSAT, to securing financial aid, to navigating the notorious first semester, to taking exams, to applying for summer internships, to getting on the law review, to tackling the bar and beyond...this book explains it all.

A Beautiful Mind 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Ron Suskind's A Hope in the Unseen: An American Odyssey from the Inner City to the Ivy League is reminiscent of A Beautiful Mind: The Life of Mathematical Genius and Nobel Laureate John Nash. In "A Beautiful Mind," our hero, John Nash, faces and fights his own demons to finally succeed and excel in the Ivy League world. In "A Hope Unseen," our hero, Cedric Jennings, fights and faces demons of societal injustice to finally succeed and excel in the Ivy League world.

Suskind's riveting narrative of Jenning's ascension from inner city life to Ivy League life paints a portrait of the contrasts between cultures like few other books ever have or ever could. More importantly, it tells the story of moving beyond suffering to a place of hope through persistence and resilience based upon Christian faith, maternal wisdom (mother wit), and the inspiring tradition of African American music.

Reviwer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction , Soul Physicians, and Spiritual Friends.

Editorial Review:

Ron Suskind won the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing in 1995 for his stories on Cedric Jennings, a talented black teenager struggling to succeed in one of the worst public high schools in Washington, D.C. Suskind has expanded those features into a full-length nonfiction narrative, following Jennings beyond his high-school graduation to Brown University, and in the tradition of Leon Dash's Rosa Lee and Alex Kotlowitz's There Are No Children Here, delivers a compelling story on the struggles of inner-city life in modern America. While it appears to have a happy ending (with Jennings earning a B average in his sophomore year), A Hope in the Unseen is not without a few caveats (at times, Jennings feels profoundly alienated from his white peers). Trite as it may sound to say, this book teaches a lesson about the virtue of perseverance, and it's definitely worth reading. --John J. Miller

Cute book- my girls love it. 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My girls love this book and want to read it every night before bedtime, as well as during the day. It is colorful and even teaches a few concepts (big and small, loud and quiet, etc.) My only problem is not with the product but with Amazon. They just threw it into a box (along with the Wall.E coloring book I ordered) with some crumpled brown paper and when it got to me is was mangled, bent and crumpled with the binding coming off- the coloring book was in bad form, too. I have golden books from my childhood in much better shape. Book gets 4 starts (not five because I felt it wasn't completely accurate in retelling the original story); Delivery gets a black hole.

The Little Golden Binding is Falling Off 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The last few little golden books that I purchased from Amazon have had the golden binding sticker falling off the book when they were delivered. This one immediately fell off on taking it out of the box and I had to glue it back on. Oddly enough, I have had this problem with the Golden Books made in the US, and not with the Golden Books made in China. The quality control at the US plants and Amazon must be very poor for this to be the case.

The book itself is okay. Just the basic outline of the Wall-E story. It is made in the same style as the Pixar 'Cars' Little Golden Book.

Editorial Review:

WHEN A LOVABLE, lonely robot named WALL•E falls in love with a sophisticated female robot named EVE, he follows his heart all the way into outer space! Young fans will enjoy this Little Golden Book retelling of Disney•Pixar’s newest film, WALL•E.

Wonderful 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful book! As the ending to the Gemma Doyle Trilogy it is heart warming, a sad but perfect ending. Anyone that loves Victorian times, fancy dresses and a hint of magic/romance should read this. A Great And Terrible Beauty, Rebel Angels and The Sweet Far Thing these are great books!

Editorial Review:

IT HAS BEEN A YEAR OF CHANGE since Gemma Doyle arrived at the foreboding Spence Academy. Her mother murdered, her father a
laudanum addict, Gemma has relied on an unsuspected strength and has discovered an ability to travel to an enchanted world called the realms, where dark magic runs wild. Despite certain peril, Gemma has bound the magic to herself and forged unlikely new alliances. Now, as Gemma approaches her London debut, the time has come to test these bonds.

The Order - the mysterious group her mother was once part of - is grappling for control of the realms, as is the Rakshana. Spence's burned East Wing is being rebuilt, but why now? Gemma and her friends see Pippa, but she is not the same. And their friendship faces its gravest trial as Gemma must decide once and for all what role she is meant for.

Frederick Douglass 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My name is Jane, and I am a student at Parkview High school. I have been taught about slavery in many past history classes. As I read this book about Frederick Douglass, my view of slavery was moved tremendously. Douglass explains the horror and cruelty of slavery in every chapter of this book. As a child, he witnessed a brutal whipping that his aunt encountered. From this point on, he realizes what slavery truly is and how it dehumanizes African Americans. Douglass was moved from being a plantation slave to a house slave when he was under the age of 10. He enjoyed the life as a house slave because he was treated more like a human-being. However, this did not last long. The mistress, Mrs. Auld, who taught him how to read and write also turned into a cruel slave owner when Mr. Auld showed her the dangers of educating a slave. Douglass, however, continued to learn how to read and write. By his consistency, Douglass accomplished his dream and became a free man. The topic of slavery should not be lightly comprehended. Although, I am not able to put my feet in Douglass' shoes, he truly is an inspirational writer that not only touched me but the hearts of thousands across the world.

Editorial Review:

Born into a family of slaves, Frederick Douglass educated himself through sheer determination. His unconquered will to triumph over his circumstances makes his one of America's best and most unlikely success stories. Douglass' own account of his journey from slave to one of America's great statesmen, writers, and orators is as fascinating as it is inspiring.

This Prestwick House Literary Touchstone Edition includes a glossary and reader's notes to help the modern reader contend with Douglass' nineteenth-century style and vocabulary.

Teachers Beware 2 out of 5 stars.

Copyright restrictions allow NO copies or transparencies for classroom use to be made. I wish I had known that before I bought both books. It never occurred to me that a book written by educators for educators would have such restrictions.

I rated the item two stars because of the inconvenience and $$$ lost, but to be fair...it is a good book for individual use.

One of two great resources for improving your SAT Math Score 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I'm an SAT tutor that actually takes the SAT three times a year. This is a great book and I wish all my students had the discipline to use it. The complaint from the other SAT tutor is not relevant to the objective of raising your score (which if you are scoring in the 500's can easily go up 100 points if you use this book in conjunction with the eight practice tests in the College Board Official Study Guide). This book remediates your math skill weaknesses which is the first step in preparing for the SAT math section. Once completed, (just the sections you are weak or rusty in)then dive into the eight practice tests in the College Board book which combine math reasoning with math skill. My other favorite resource for my students is Acing the New SAT I Math by Greenhall Publishing---an excellent resource to use by itself or in combination with Barron's. It's actually more comprehensive than Barron's and ideal for the student that is looking for a challenge and a score over 650. I would do the Barron's book first and then the Acting the New SAT I Math for each math section. Have fun!

Editorial Review:

Revised to reflect the newly structured math section on the SAT, the new edition of this workbook offers students intensive preparation for the test’s all-important math questions. The author suggests special math strategies to help students approach unfamiliar types of questions and come up with correct answers. Exercises include hundreds of multiple-choice questions and “grid-in” questions with worked-out solutions, plus a new focus on third-year college preparatory math topics.

Editorial Review:

The Fourth Edition is again based on Robert Kimbrough's meticulously re-edited text. Missing words have been restored and the entire novel has been repunctuated in accordance with Conrad's style. The result is the first published version of Heart of Darkness that allows readers to hear Marlow's voice as Conrad heard it when he wrote the story.

"Backgrounds and Contexts" provides readers with a generous collection of maps and photographs that bring the Belgian Congo to life. Textual materials, topically arranged, address nineteenth-century views of imperialism and racism and include autobiographical writings by Conrad on his life in the Congo. New to the Fourth Edition is an excerpt from Adam Hochschild's recent book, King Leopold's Ghost, as well as writings on race by Hegel, Darwin, and Galton.

"Criticism" includes a wealth of new materials, including nine contemporary reviews and assessments of Conrad and Heart of Darkness and twelve recent essays by Chinua Achebe, Peter Brooks, Daphne Erdinast-Vulcan, Edward Said, and Paul B. Armstrong, among others. Also new to this edition is a section of writings on the connections between Heart of Darkness and the film Apocalypse Now by Louis K. Greiff, Margot Norris, and Lynda J. Dryden.

A Chronology and Selected Bibliography are also included.

About the Series: No other series of classic texts equals the caliber of the Norton Critical Editions. Each volume combines the most authoritative text available with the comprehensive pedagogical apparatus necessary to appreciate the work fully. Careful editing, first-rate translation, and thorough explanatory annotations allow each text to meet the highest literary standards while remaining accessible to students. Each edition is printed on acid-free paper and every text in the series remains in print. Norton Critical Editions are the choice for excellence in scholarship for students at more than 2,000 universities worldwide.

Fame

It's a few years after rebel Tally Youngblood took down the uglies/pretties/specials regime. Without those strict roles and rules, the world is in a complete cultural renaissance. "Tech-heads" flaunt their latest gadgets, "kickers" spread gossip and trends, and "surge monkeys" are hooked on extreme plastic surgery. And it's all monitored on a bazillion different cameras. The world is like a gigantic game of American Idol. Whoever is getting the most buzz gets the most votes. Popularity rules.

As if being fifteen doesn't suck enough, Aya Fuse's rank of 451,369 is so low, she's a total nobody. An extra. But Aya doesn't care; she just wants to lie low with her drone, Moggle. And maybe kick a good story for herself.

Then Aya meets a clique of girls who pull crazy tricks, yet are deeply secretive of it. Aya wants desperately to kick their story, to show everyone how intensely cool the Sly Girls are. But doing so would propel her out of extra-land and into the world of fame, celebrity...and extreme danger. A world she's not prepared for.
