Their Eyes Shine at You 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I collect African wildlife books and this one is the best because this superb photographer captures the glint in the eyes of these gorgeous animals. The character of each individual animal makes this book one to keep within reach for creative inspiration. I love the ways color, line, shape, form, and movement gallop and graze and lull across each page.

Proudly South Africa 5 out of 5 stars.

To be able to produce work such as Gerald Hinde has, one should understand the preparation and patience needed. A single image can be days in the making! Glancing through his book , 'African Wildlife', I manage to 'know' the artist and recognize the love he has for his work and the beautiful animals that he has captured on film. The photography shown is amazing, the editing and presentation are excellent, as is the quality of the printing, done by Struik Publishers in South Africa. I highly recommend this book for all who enjoy excellent photography and wildlife.

Editorial Review:

Ghosts of Tsavo: Stalking the Mystery Lions of East Africa is both a riveting adventure travel narrative and a modern-day scientific exploration. Caputo and his small corps of discovery - consisting of a photographer, two eminent scientists from the University of Minnesota and, sometimes, a few armed rangers supplied by the Kenya Park Service - prowl the forbidding plains of Tsavo and southern Kenya seeking close encounters with Africa's most efficient killers--the massive, hauntingly mysterious lions immortalized by the 1907 publication of John Patterson's The Man-Eaters of Tsavo. The book chronicled the bloody exploits of two such beasts that in 1898 killed and ate 140 workers who were building a railroad bridge over the Tsavo River. The seemingly unkillable man-eaters literally stopped the British Empire in its tracks during their yearlong reign of terror. The natives came to believe these body-snatching cats - and their ilk - to be incarnate spirits of African chieftains angered by the building of a railroad through their ancestral lands. The story inspired two feature films, Bwana Devil in 1952 and The Ghost and the Darkness in 1996. But the adrenaline rush of living for months in the shadow of such fearsome critters is only half of our story. Apart from Caputo's widely acclaimed gift for dramatic narrative, what lifts this story out of the category of a thrill-seekers travelogue is the mission of discovery element pursued by the writer with his two scientist companions. The mission: Is there any truth to the recent reports (by two scientists from Chicago's Field Museum) that these fierce mane-less lions could constitute a feline 'missing link' between modern lions and the prehistoric lions that preyed on our Pleistocene ancestors. So this, otherwise, great adventure story is larded with the gravitas of scientific quest, as Caputo traces the efforts of our two biologists to unlock the secrets of the maneaters of Tsavo.

Daddy- Lond- legs 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I read Daddy Long Legs ages ago as a young teenager in a wonderful translation into my mother tongue, Greek. When I asked the daughter of a friend of mine - a gifted young girl who reads avidly and attends the American College in Athens if she had read it I was surprised to hear that she did not even know about it.
I have ordered it and read it again in English before giving it to her and have again enjoyed it enormously.
Of course it is very romantic and unrealistic and describes the American 'elite'- in terms of finances and intellect, very favourably but it has enormous freshness, is full of joy for life and is written with such humour that makes one forget everything else. It also manages in a very gentle way to speak about certain ideals difficult to find in the 21st century....
As it was meant to be a gift I chose the more expensive hard back and was very disappointed to see that the drawings that accompanied the text in the version I had read in the past and which were adding so much to the overall enjoyment and fun were missing. Why?
I shall try to search amongst the various editions if there is one that has them alongside the text.

Editorial Review:

TThe story of an 18 year old orphan who is sent to school, thanks to a benefactor whose name she is not allowed to know, but to whom she has to write. Judy confides all her feelings to Daddy-Long-Legs in her letters, but only gets a reply when she tells him she has argued with her boyfriend.

The following information is from the inside cover: 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

A Guide to Nature in Winter is an un paralleled introduction to the wintertime natural world. Nature is never dormant: on close observation, a silent, snow- blanketed winter landscape reveals itself as the setting for intense and purposeful activity in the plant and animal worlds. Because natural activity is greatly simplified in winter, though, it is the ideal season to introduce oneself to the complex series of relationships that tie the natural world together.

Perhaps this volume is better described as eight comprehensive field guides in one. Donald Stokes covers thoroughly the eight prominent aspects of winter most easily studied in the field: winter weeds, snow crystals, wintering trees, evidence of in sects, birds and abandoned nests, winter mushrooms, tracks in the snow, and ever green plants. For each topic, he provides a general introduction, a key to field identification of items within the topic, and a natural history description of each item (arranged alphabetically, by common name).

The 485 stunning pen-and-ink drawings that grace these pages make accurate field identification easy and convey a feeling for nature in its entirety. A Guide to Nature in Winter will inform and entertain nature lovers, winter walkers, cross-country skiers, campers, birdwatchers, armchair naturalists - in short, everyone interested in understanding the marvels held by nature in winter. The combination of an expertly organized text and splendid illustrations enables readers to see, clearly and piercingly, the winter landscape as a bountiful whole.

Donald Stokes is a naturalist and teacher. Deborah Prince is a freelance artist. Both live in Massachusetts.

A must have! One of the best crystal books yet ! 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Teresa Kennedy has written a book with very good, clear and practical information addressing both mystical and scientific aspects of crystals and gemstones. The book is divided into sections such as "The Love Stones" "Stones of protection ", "Stones for physical healing ", etc., with some stones occurring in more than one of the nine categories. This is an extremely useful book for a beginner and will be a valuable addition to any crystal library.
I have over 50 crystal healing books and have written quite a bit about crystal healing myself. This book is one I'll recommend highly. There is no perfect crystal healing book and there probably never will be, but this is one of the best I have seen yet. I practice different styles of crystal healing and use some more intuitive methods than the author, so a few of my personal recommendations might be different. This is a very good book and if you can get only one book about crystals, this is the one I'd suggest. This book has relatively little information about detailed methods of working with crystals but that is probably an asset. The Author gives sound advice and guidance based on her experience and allows the reader to determine the way they will work with the stones. Each stone entry has a color photograph of the stone. This book could be very useful for helping someone choose stones to work with for specific purposes. This is a very solid guide with a lot for both beginners and as a reference for more advanced practitioners.

The Heart of the Jungle 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

"Jaguar" is the fascinating story of one scientist's journey to study and protect the elusive jaguar, the third largest cat in the world.

Written like a book of fiction, "Jaguar" reads smoothly, capturing your attention and curiosity with its first-person portrayal of life in an alien world: the jungles of Belize. It is peopled with the Maya, a culture rich in history yet suffering poverty, disease, and insignificance in modern times. And in this world exists the jaguar, a powerful cat who is rarely seen and is not a man-eater, yet is hunted almost to extinction for its exquisite spotted fur and because, quite simply, people fear it.

I read "Jaguar" in about 2 days, and fell completely in love with its spirit. The author, a young scientist, struggled hard to successfully understand the lives of these cats within its world and to keep it alive, often to his own personal tragedies. His description of the jungle is unromantic and riveting, as are the terrible hardships that go with it. I will never forget all the diseases, snakes, and parasites than run amok in this story, practically characters of their own. One lesson I came back with is how thankful I am to live in a country with exceptional sanitation and medical care.

"Jaguar" is haunting. You can't finish it without wishing to enter that dark, dangerous jungle of the majestic jaguar. It draws out the adventurer in you. It stirs your compassion.

Editorial Review:

In 1983, zoologist Alan Rabinowitz ventured into the rain forest of Belize, determined to study the little-known jaguar in its natural habitat and to establish the world's first jaguar preserve. Within two years, he had succeeded. In "Jaguar" he provides the only first-hand account of a scientist's experience with jaguars in the wild. Originally published in 1986, this edition includes a new preface and epilogue by the author that bring the story up to date with recent events in the region and around the world.

Heartwarming and Wonderful! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Although I did not see the television documentary on these two little darlings, I nevertheless loved the book. Although they are now big bears, the story of little Klondike and Snow's early years is interesting, educational and touching. Abandoned by their mother as cubs, the two bears were raised by humans. This book clearly illustrates the love and devotion of the Denver Zoo towards the cubs' care and development. Klondike and Snow are now thriving at Sea World's Wild Arctic exhibit, were they have plenty of living space and attention!

This book is wonderful for any animal lover and people interested in animal/human interaction.

A Teacher's Review of "Klondike and Snow" 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Anyone who was fascinated by the PBS program on these two polar bears will enjoy this book. It tells the story of their early years before being transfered to the Florida zoo. The photos are amazing! I've used this book as a resource with K-6th graders, and all ages have loved it. The text under the photos is very small and in blue, making it difficult to read, but the main text is fine, and otherwise the book is wonderful. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in these two very special bears.

Encyclopedia of Rocks and Minerals, a Review 4 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I am the author of two books, "Collecting Fluorescent Minerals" and "The World of Fluorescent Minerals" and needed additional resources for non-fluorescent minerals. This book was nicely done - good illustrations, lots of variety, clearly written - but the information covering fluorescent minerals in this book was not very accurate. Every mineral collector needs several sources to get a good idea of what he or she has and this is one that I will continue to use. This should not be your only book, but it is worth having among your library.

Editorial Review:

This is the ultimate photographic guide to the world of rocks and minerals, with a strong emphasis on how to build a diverse and colorful collection.
