VERY WELL WRITEN TO CONVEY THE TRUE ATROCITIES OF SLAVERY. 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This children's book helps us to better understand the true feelings of an African-American person in the south. It is great for those of us who don't really have a grasp of what was going on.

Two heroes 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

First published in 1968, this artistic book tells the awe-inspiring story of Harriet Tubman. It ought to be on the list of children's bestsellers, for it gives children the stories of two American heroes for the price of one. The first is the title figure, Harriet Tubman (1820-1913), who escaped from slavery but courageously returned south 19 times to lead more than 300 others to freedom. The second is Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000), who made this magnificent series of illustrations in 1939 and 1940.

The text is poetic. Early in the story, on a hot summer day in about 1820, "a group of slave children were tumbling in the sandy soil in the state of Maryland," Harriet Tubman among them. She dreamed of freedom and escaped, but returned to help others. The story builds as the selfless African-American leader risked her life many times to help others reach freedom. "Some were afraid, / But none turned back, / For close at their heels / Howled the bloodhound pack."

As the story closes, young readers find an enthralling figure of Harriet Tubman building support for the anti-slavery movement. At every convention within 500 miles, she could be found speaking in words and tones that brought tears to the eyes and sorrow to the hearts of all listeners.

Lawrence's paintings, made in tempera colors and poster paints, are poetic, too. Trained in the art workshops of Harlem in the 1930s, including the Utopia Children's House and the Harlem Art Workshop (sponsored by the New Deal), Lawrence became one of the finest African-American artists in U.S. history. His extraordinary talent was recognized when he was still relatively young.

Born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, he moved to Easton, Pennsylvania and then at seven to Philadelphia. At 13, Jacob moved again, to Harlem. Drawing on Bible stories and the powerful Christian sermons, often given on street corners, Lawrence remembered orators who spoke with reverence of Harriet Tubman and determined to show the African-American struggle for freedom in his art.

The Tubman series was one of Lawrence's earliest. It predated by only a couple of years the 60-panel migration series that made Lawrence's career in 1941-42. Half that series was bought by the Philips Gallery in Washington D.C. and the other half by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

But Lawrence's Tubman work is among his best. This book's only shortcoming is that it does not reproduce all of the Tubman paintings. Several were excluded and can be seen only in an art museum, or the pages of an art catalogue. But don't let that stop you. Children will find themselves doubly enriched. Alyssa A. Lappen

Black Women of the Old West 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This was a valuable read and a useful tool in presenting those parts of our history as a nation that do not make it into the history books. I recommend it. The beautiful portraits of the women just added to it's fascination. Give it as a gift to a junior high or high school library.

Editorial Review:

Black women were always part of America's westward expansion. Some escaped slavery to live with the Native Americans, while others traveled west after the Civil War to settle the new lands. They came as servants and as independent pioneers struggling to make a life in the wilderness. Brief text and extraordinary photos record many of the black women who went West to find a new life for themselves and their families.

A Celebration of Seven Generations of Strong Women! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be simply inspirational. Hearne sets up a time line of sorts, depicting seven strong, determined women from her heritage who are rugged yet feminine and caring. Each woman differs remarkably in her interest and education, but is portrayed as a positive and vital part of the family. The focus on the wars through out the lives of these women demonstrates the integral part women played on the homefront, more often than not with out the credit they deserved. This is a book that would spark interest in female readers who might not otherwise be curious about their own heritage.

Editorial Review:

Take a journey through time with seven women who left their indelible imprints on the past. Their history is a story and more. They were farmers and artists and missionaries and storytellers. They fought many battles but never in any wars. They were devout and determined and tireless and beloved. They were brave beyond compare. Betsy Hearne and Bethanne Andersen both make their picture-book debuts in this empowering, beautifully illustrated account of seven unforgettable women.

Editorial Review:

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery, Alabama, bus. This simple act of defiance spurred African American residents' 381-day boycott of the Montgomery bus system and arguably fueled the civil rights movement itself.

For the last 40 years, Rosa Parks has received thousands and thousands of letters, most of them from children. This elegantly designed book contains a diverse selection of these letters on topics ranging from hope to O.J. Simpson, and Parks's replies are simple, sometimes poignant, but always reassuring.

The first letter from a child in Oakland, California, begins, "I am sorry that you went to jail because you did not give in to the system. Mrs. Parks, please try and stop the violence and the killing, because where I live lots of people get taken out (killed). "With her thoughtful answers to this ("Life should not be taken for granted") and other letters, Rosa Parks continues her legacy of challenging us to become a force for positive change. Children will be inspired and soothed by the words of this remarkable woman. (Ages 8 and older)

What a moving book! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

It leaves hope that a child who is rejected for being unattractive and shy can find a person who is accepting and willing to reach out to them. It also reminds me how important a teacher can be to bring out the best in a pupil and prepare them for adult life and self-acceptance.

Editorial Review:

Award-winning author Cooney presents a well-researched and poignant storybook biography of Eleanor Roosevelt's childhood. The wartime First Lady of the New Deal, who became one of the most beloved Americans for her empathy with the downtrodden, was famously unglamorous and plain in looks, even as a child. Her beautiful and awful mother humiliated the little girl, calling her Granny, "because she is so funny and old-fashioned looking." Orphaned at nine the girl eventually found her way to confidence, helped initially by a boarding-school headmistress. The book mentions only briefly Roosevelt's later achievements, so a parent will have to supply a little context for this tale of an ugly duckling who turns into, not a swan, but a fulfilled and happy duck.

The life of young Harriet Tubman. 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

As a teacher, I found this book to be helpful in introducing my students to one of America's famous female heroines. This is an appropriate book for third to sixth grade students. Fifth and sixth graders should have an easy time reading this book; however, third and fourth graders will probably enjoy it more if it is read to them. Pinkney's illustrations are wonderful. If you enjoyed his use of pencil, colored pencils, and watercolors in other books (e.g. The Patchwork Quilt) then you'll cetainly enjoy the work he's done in this book. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to remind children that it's important to dream, hope, and have faith.

Editorial Review:

Many people know about Harriet Tubman's adult life--how she helped hundreds of slaves escape to freedom along the Underground Railroad. But how know about Harriet Tubman's life as a little African-American girl? This dramatic portrayal will open the eyes of countless young readers and help them to know the little girl who would become one of America's greatest heroines. Full color.

Will encourage young women to go into the "mans' world" 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I have experience in a lot of the fields mentioned in this book. The photographs and history behind them by Shirley Burman makes the women of yesteryear come alive again in my mind!! I thououghly enjoyed this book, and encourage others to read it. After 27 years on the railroad, there was a lot I learned from this book... Thanks, Shirley and Nancy.....!!!

Editorial Review:

Women's unknown but important contribution working on the railroads is explored in this eye-opening account by award-winning author Nancy Smiler Levinson. She has written the book in collaboration with Shirley Burman, a photographer and foremost expert on the subject of women railroad workers. Tracing their rise from domestic service jobs in the mid-1830s to positions vacated when men went off to fight in two world wars, the book shows how women overcame prejudice to take their place on the railroad workforce. They have served in all capacities, including telegraph operators, architects, yardmasters, welders, nurse/attendants, brakemen, locomotive engineers, and even company president. Featured are many profiles and interviews of these ground-breaking pioneers as well as photographs and artifacts from Shirley Burman's extensive collection.

A Must-Read for 11-12 year old American Girls 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Jean Fritz does a remarkable job engaging the reader in the compelling tale of one woman's life... a woman who is often overshadowed in the popular culture.

Today's young girls will benefit in learning how much women of the past were much like they were AND had much fewer benefits AND how much they worked, created and moved their way towards their desired end result which we all benefit from today.

Fritz' tone is amusing and highly readible while covering the important facts at hand as well.

I am looking forward to having my daughter read this book so she can get to "know" Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

I selected this book to read for a Children's Literature course that I was taking. I found the book to be a good blend of history with humor. I found it quite enjoyable to read. I thought this is a great way to teach children about history.

Editorial Review:

A lively portrait of the unconventional leader of the women's suffrage movement follows Lizzie Stanton's career from the 1848 Women's Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, through her successful writing and lecturing tours, to her struggle for women's rights.

REAL GIRL POWER! 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book while working on a Women's History project for college and also to help with Civil War living history presentations. Because this book is for young readers I have not used if for much more than an overview and to point out photographs (which are wonderful) during my presentations. However, I recommend this book for any young reader interested in history or teacher wishing to include more women into the curriculum. It gives a great overview of women's roles during the Civil War, how their lives changes, what roles they took on, and what struggles they endured! Now that is GIRL POWER!

civil war pic 4 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Stirring vignettes from such notables as Harriet Beecher Stowe, Clara Barton, Harriet Tubman, Soujourner Truth, and Louisa May Alcott, as well as portraits of lesser known but equally courageous individuals, comprise this eye-opening third volume in the Young Readers' History of the Civil War series. Archival photographs and illustrations throughout.
