Great for homeschooling 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is great. I use it for homeschooling my children along with The Great Courses DVD course "Between the Rivers: Mesopotamia". It is easy to match each lecture and the page number that it correlates to in this DK book. As usual, the photography is fantastic. We watch one 30 minute lecture and read one part of the book each day and along with some extra discussions, crafts, and supplemental reading, we have a two month course on Ancient History in Mesopotamia that is top notch.

Editorial Review:

In these 4 all-new titles-each with its own clip-art CD and wall chart-DK shines its Eyewitness spotlight on vital topics from the past, present, and future. While Mesopotamia explore the cradle of civilization and Great Scientists reveals the minds that shaped the modern world, China investigates the present-day culture of the most populous country on the planet, and Oil takes a look at the controversial substance responsible for the beginning-and, if we're not careful, the end of life as we know it today.

Heavy but Worth it! 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 12 people found this review helpful.

These DK white books are uncommonly heavy. They don't have as much detailed information as the Blue Guides or Rough Guides, but are good for brief visits or first timers. Where they excell is their outstanding illustrations and diagrams, often cutaways. The maps are good, but the labeling system makes it difficult to locate things easily. Lots of full page color photos give a preview of the trip. It's a daunting task to try to cover India in a single guide, but this book almost does it. It's well organized, color coded by region. The picture of Palitana in the Gujarat section became the foundation for that section of our 2003 trip to India [ cascoly.com/trav/india.asp ], and the diversion provided one of the highlights of the entire 6 week trip.

Bottom line? Your best bet is to get the Rough and Blue Guides, then be sure that someone else on the trip is carrying the DK. Or buy the books you need, and then just scan the pages you need to bring with you.

I ordered this kit during our study of ancient civilizations. What better place to begin than Egypt. I thought my boys (ages 6 & 7) would enjoy the games and making their own heiroglyphics. The package was very interesting looking and peaked their curiosity immediately. However, the beads to the necklace were next to impossible to string. The stamps were also very small and did not stay in the place when trying to make the heiroglyphic messages. The book and sample papyrus were great. In fact, my 6 year old took both to our homeschool co-op for show and tell. All in all, not bad, but a little pricey for what you get.

Editorial Review:

Unlock the secrets of ancient Egypt in the first title from a remarkable new series of interactive kits. The book is a close-up look at the world of Egypt, just as it was more than 3,000 years ago. Learn about the ancient Egyptians' mysterious art, science, beliefs, daily life, games, and practices. Includes a replica stone necklace, papyrus, hieroglyphic rubber stamp, and more. Full color.

Informative but graphic 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Our family is a big fan of these Eyewitness books and this is an excellent overview of all types of mummies.
As a warning however, there are quite a few gruesome photographs which might scare kids younger than 6 or 7 so a parent might want to check it out in a bookstore before buying sight unseen.

Editorial Review:

New Look! Relaunched with new jackets and 8 pages of new text!

Here is an exciting and informative guide to mummies, both natural and embalmed. Superb color photographs of preserved bodies - from a hunter who froze to death 5,300 years ago to the mummy of Ramesses the Great - offer a unique "eyewitness" view of how and why mummification developed. See the unwrapped bodies of Egyptian pharaohs, a Chinese princess buried in a suit of jade, the face of a Copper-Age hunter, a mummy that became a movie star, and a Peruvian mummy from high in the Andes. Learn how bog people were sacrificed, why one 5,000-year-old mummy is called Ginger, the size of the longest crocodile mummy, and how modern technology can see inside closed mummy cases. Discover how Sicilian monks embalmed their dead, what started the story of the mummy's curse, how wealthy Egyptians took servants into the afterlife, the glittering treasures of Tutankhamun, and much, much more!

NOT only as a teaching tool! 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book was very helpful and a great deal of fun! Although we would have loved to have used it for a homeschoolers teaching tool, we actually used it for a birthday party. My 6yo son had an Egyptian Archealogical Dig for his birthday and we used this book to make games about the Ancient Egyptians and learn a lot more than we thought. I will purchase more in the series for our History lessons this school year-- what a great find!

I Liked It But My Student Didn't 3 out of 5 stars.

I've been impressed by the content of the 3 "History Pockets" books we've used in our homeschool (Ancient Civilizations, Ancient Egypt, and Ancient Greece). I think they would be really helpful for visual and tactile learners. Unfortunately, my DD hated all the cutting & pasting involved. She found it to be busywork.

I would recommend the "History Pockets" to students who don't mind all the prep work involved in making the folders/lapbook.

We loved it! 5 out of 5 stars.

We homeschool and decided to add this into our World History when we hit Egypt. This is my first pocket and we really enjoyed it. I adapted it to a 2nd and 3rd grader, but found many of the projects to be on level for them. They loved to cut, paste and color while I read the info on the Egypyians. When I ask comprehension questions they could actually answer them. :)

Don't let the cover fool you. 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Don't let the cover of this book fool you. The lovely cover makes this book look like a high school or college text, but upon opening it you will find it appeals to a younger crowd. Their are lovely pictures and illustrations. The text is succinct and relatively easy to read. There are many pictures to keep the reader engaged. If your upper elementary to middle school age child finds ancient history a little boring, give this book a try. It is fact-filled but well-illustrated and to-the-point. A great addition to your library if you homeschool; great to flesh out your history lesson if you use MOH or TOG.

Editorial Review:

This book is suitable for ages 8-14. With a history that stretches back over 8,000 years, ancient Mesopotamia was home to many great cultures and empires. Illustrative maps and timelines will teach children the complex history of the area that is now modern-day Iraq. The topics include: The Tigris and Euphrates Rivers and the cradle of civilisation; The great cities of Ur and Babylon; The Sumerians, Akkadians, Assyrians and many other ancient peoples; The eye for an eye system of ancient justice; and, Ancient cuneiform writing.

Excellent guide to help teach children ancient history. 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

The Greenleaf Guide is an excellent resource to help you teach your children ancient history and Old Testament history. For each lesson, you read a chapter or so of the Old Testament. The guide then gives you questions to discuss, explanations of the historical setting, as well as suggestions for how to handle "complicated" readings from the Bible. The guide is helpful even if you want to read it to study Old Testament history yourself.

Editorial Review:

This book outlines a reading program which will take you through the history of Israel by reading through the historical books from Genesis to Nehemiah chronologically. Old Testament history is divided into 196 Bible readings (approximately 1 chapter each) along with some suggestions of how to cover the material and keep it interesting. For each reading there are a series of questions to help you focus on the significant details. There are also a number of background notes and some suggestions for further study. This book won't answer all your questions, but it will give you a well-thought out program of reading and studying the history of Israel. It is intended as a first history course for the early elementary grades (though many parents are using it with high school students) - background for the study of Egypt and other ancient cultures in the Greenleaf history series.

This book offers an updated look at Israel's tumultuous history. It narrates the complex tale of Israel's people and their modern state, established thousands of years after the destruction of the old one, against the backdrop of exile, anti-Semitism, Zionism, and the Holocaust."A Brief History of Israel, Second Edition" explores Israel's history with an emphasis on the period since its independence in 1948. This comprehensive reference then examines the independent country of Israel, including the Arab - Israeli conflict, domestic politics, Knesset election results, the economy, and international relations. Completely up-to-date, this second edition features a new preface, a revised introduction, a revised glossary of political parties, a new final chapter, and updated appendixes. Its coverage includes: The period since Israel's independence in 1948; The Middle East peace process; Economic and political challenges; Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip; The creation of the new Kadima Party and the election of 2006; and, Hamas's election victory and its effect on Israel.
