After reading a short story in Reading class, my daughters became very curious about the Titanic. This book is a good overview of the ship and the voyage.

TITANIC CUTAWAY 3 out of 5 stars.

fun book to look at, but not nearly as detailed as I would have liked. Seems to be aimed at a young audience. well worth the price if you want a lite look inside the great ship. a welcome addition to my Titanic library.

Disappointed 1 out of 5 stars.

Based on the reviews I read, I was expecting an unbelievable book. First of all, I expected a cut out pop up book. The pictures were deceiving online. The "cutaway" is just a one dimensional picture of inside the ship. Obviously other people liked it. It did not meet our needs.

Editorial Review:

Allows young readers to journey inside the Titanic to view the layout of the great doomed ocean liner, such as the compartments, engine room, upper decks, and more, through detailed, cutaway illustrations."

We are a homeschooling family. I Love this whole series! I have all of them on CD which is great because we take them in the van with us. You can listen to them over and over and really remember it that way. They are Told kind of like a story so it holds your interest. I have 5 kiddos and I find they all enjoy and learn from these. I am learning alot too :)

Editorial Review:

The Story of the World CD audiobook is a collaboration between Jim Weiss, whose voice is "liquid gold" (CNN TV), and Susan Wise Bauer, whose writing has been described as "timeless and intelligent" (Publishers Weekly). These spirited readings of the last volume in Bauer's history series bring to life the stories and records of human history from ancient times to the present.

Written in an engaging, straightforward manner, this volume of the popular Story of the World series weaves world history into a storybook format. The fourth volume covers the major historical events of the last 150 years, from the American Civil War to the presidency of Nelson Mandela.

This audio CD edition may be used along with the print books, as a supplement to a traditional history curriculum, or independently. 11 audio CDs.

Goes behind the Titanic. Why did the Titanic sank, why it was built, how they came up with the name Titanic etc. It has everything you need to know about the Titanic. Even has real actual pictures taken of the Titanic in the water and above.

Editorial Review:

Panama was less than 50 miles wide, yet difficult to bridge by canal -- its swamps were disease-ridden, its mountainous rain forest challenged the most brilliant engineers, and its oppressive heat exhausted the hardiest workers. Engineers found ways to cut through the forest, medical visionaries conquered the diseases, and workers endured the jungle. Yet there were also broken treaties, political tyranny, and the tragedy of thousands of West Indian workers forced to live in awful, segregated conditions.

Wonders of the World series

The winner of numerous awards, this series is renowned for Elizabeth Mann's ability to convey adventure and excitement while revealing technical information in engaging and easily understood language. The illustrations are lavishly realistic and accurate in detail but do not ignore the human element. Outstanding in the genre, these books are sure to bring even the most indifferent young reader into the worlds of history, geography, and architecture.

"One of the ten best non-fiction series for young readers."

Editorial Review:

Twelve-year-old Emily Watson's story is a shocking, compassionate re-creation of daily life for the urban poor one hundred years ago. At the dingy, overcrowded Acme Garment Factory, Emily Watson stands for eleven hours a day clipping threads from blouses. Every time the boss passes, he shouts at her to snip faster. But if Emily snips too fast, she could ruin the garment and be docked pay. If she works too slowly, she will be fired. She desperately needs this job. Without the four dollars a week it brings, her family will starve. When a reporter arrives, determined to expose the terrible conditions in the factory, Emily finds herself caught between the desperate immigrant girls with whom she works and the hope of change. Then tragedy strikes, and Emily must decide where her loyalties lie. With Factory Girl, Barbara Greenwood returns to the unique hybrid of fact and fiction that earned her acclaim for The Last Safe House, A Pioneer Thanksgiving and others. The life of working children in North American cities in the early part of the twentieth century directly inspired young Emily's story. Her fictional experiences are interwoven with nonfiction sections describing family life in a slum, the fight to improve social conditions, the plight of working children then and now, and much more. Rarely seen archival photos accompany this story of the past as only Barbara Greenwood can tell it.

a reviewer should read the book 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

As one of the authors of the book, The Vietnam War: A History in Documents, I take exception to the review from the reader in Colorado. I have seen his actual comments and he must know that we have shown them to be incorrect. He claims that we are incorrect on certain pages but in fact we had the facts correct. He is entitled to his own opinion but he is not entitled to his own set of facts. He seems to think that we should have written another kind of book. That is his privilege. It would be decent for any reviewer to comment directly on the book being reviewed rather than a book that he thinks we should have written. His comments are very close to being dishonest and seem primarily interested in disparaging the book. The controversy over the Vietnam War has not yet ended. Yours truly, John J. Fitzgerald

Editorial Review:

The Vietnam War tells the story of one of the most divisive episodes in modern American history through primary sources, ranging from government documents, news reports, speeches, popular songs to memoirs, writings by Vietnam veterans (including coauthor John Fitzgerald), and poetry by Vietnamese and Americans on matching themes. The book begins in the 19th century when Vietnam became a French colony, and traces the insidious route by which the United States became involved in a war on the other side of the world.

Eruptions.

Explosions.

Shock waves.

Tsunamis.

The almighty explosion that destroyed the volcano island of Krakatoa was followed by an immense tsunami that killed more than thirty thousand people. The effects of the waves were felt as far away as France, and bodies were washed up in Zanzibar.

Today, one hundred and twenty-five years after the volcano erupted in one of the greatest catastrophes the world has ever known, the name Krakatoa is still synonymous with disaster.

In this illustrated account based on Simon Winchester's bestselling Krakatoa, the colossal explosion is brought to vivid life. From the ominous warnings leading up to the eruption to the wave of killings it provoked, here is an engaging and insightful look at what happened on the day the world exploded.

This is the coolest book if you love Texas! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I just bought this book for one of the young people in my life and I am having a hard time giving it to her as I like it so much! It has really cool facts about Texas! I also like that it mentions the best university in Texas (UT) and not that other school. My only complaint is that it is a little harsh on Houston!

Wish my 7th grade Texas History teacher had this one!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

With this colorful, clever, and surprisingly informative book, history leaps off the page like a bucking bronco at the Fort Worth Rodeo. Snappy dialogue between the two cartoon characters--Sam and Meredith, your "guides" through this diverse land--cooks up an easily digestible version of Texas history without being dishonest (for example, a few paragraphs are devoted to the haunting legacy of the Native Americans who were here first). This book reads easier than cold lemonade on a sweltering day in August. You (and your kids!) will love it!

Dateline: Troy
Book review

The book Dateline: Troy is all about the war against the Trojans and the Greeks. They are fighting over a woman named Helen. The reason that they are fighting over her is because a guy named Paris was asked by 3 goddess` which one of them was the fairest. He eventually picked Aphrodite the goddess of love. Since he picked her she granted him the love of any one he desired. He chose Helen, a married Greek, to be his love. She went to him under the spell. The Greeks didn`t like this, so the war began.
I think this book is confusing because almost every page is about a different person. I also think this book is very exciting because they attack each other all the time. My favorite part is when the Greeks build the wooden horse and pile inside it. They give it to the Trojans saying that they give up. The Trojans take it inside their walls. When the Trojans fell asleep, the Greeks inside attack them while they`re unaware.
If you like books about war, love, and myths, this is a good book for you.

Editorial Review:

Paul Fleischman offers a glimpse at the Trojan War through modern day newspaper headlines. By equating such events as Agamemnon offering sacrifice to the Greeks before sailing to Troy with George Bush's declaration of a national day of prayer after sending troops to the Persian Gulf, or the massacre of the Trojans by the Greeks to the My Lai incident in Vietnam, Fleischman helps young scholars understand the myth through present-day events and attitudes. Each page of text is enhanced by a collage of newspaper clippings relating to a particular piece of the myth.
