THE STORY OF HARRIET TUBMAN 4 out of 5 stars.
18 of 21 people found this review helpful.

This book is my introduction of Black History Month to my fifth grade students. We read this book aloud and discuss it in detail. It tells the story of Harriet Tubman, a great, courageous black woman who was instrumental as a conductor of the Underground Railroad. The story begins with Harriet at age six and tells of the beatings and hardships she endured throughout her life. My students love this book because it is poignant, funny, and exciting. Harriet's life reads like a James Bond novel. She was a commander and a spy for the Northern army. She was a conductor of the Underground Railroad. She risked her life repeatedly to free her people and family from the bonds of slavery. Most of my students have never heard of Harriet Tubman and after reading this book have come to admire this wonderful black woman.

Editorial Review:

This inspiring biography of Harriet Tubman tells how she helped free over 300 slaves as a "conductor" for the Underground Railroad and how she became a nurse, a scout and spy for the Union Forces during the Civil War.

Great for Reading to Younger Children 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I have read this book to my two grandsons (Brooks nearly 4 and Pierce nearly 3 yrs old) and their interest and response to this book has been fun and surprising. The story interests them and the art illustrates the story very well. They enjoy finding the characters from the story in the associated pictures. Phineas Dobbs' grumbling has become an inside family joke. The boys go around the house often repeating his comment, "I told you, it can't be done!" while placing their arms across their chest.

The book has provoked them to ask many questions which has proved to be a good teaching opportunity as well.

They read everytime before naptime and bedtime and they have insisted that this book be included each time for about three weeks now. I highly recommend this book for reading to children 3 years old and up.

Editorial Review:

Now with an updated paperback cover, Abe Lincoln Goes to Washington paints a vivid picture of the Springfield, IL years, when Abe met and married a pretty Kentucky woman, and made his name as a lawyer and politician. Cheryl Harness gives readers a moving account of Lincoln’s rise and the tensions that dragged the nation into conflict; brilliantly detailed maps and battle scenes deepen our understanding of the Civil War; and the book’s richly imagined illustrations recreate the life of the man who will always be regarded as one of our greatest presidents.

Editorial Review:

When she was a young girl, Narcissa loved nothing better than to read heroic tales about brave men and women risking their lives to bring Christian ideas to "barbarians" in far-off places. In 1831, her dream of doing the same was about to come true. That's when some Indians arrived in St. Louis, Missouri, looking for the "White Man's Book of Heaven." Their quest was the answer to Narcissa's prayers: She would bring salvation to "those wandering sons of our native forests. "

Narcissa married Marcus Whitman, another missionary want-to-be, and they headed West. She spent her honeymoon riding side-saddle some 2,000 miles across the vast, often perilous trail to Oregon Country—something no other white woman had ever done. Then she and Marcus lived happily ever after singing hymns and teaching the Indians about the Bible, right? Wrong! Readers will find out what really happened when East met West at the end of the real-life, legendary Oregon Trail.

Editorial Review:

In the early morning hours of July 11, 1804, two men stood facing each other on a New Jersey cliff side. One was the U.S. vice president, Aaron Burr, and the other was Alexander Hamilton, the secretary of the treasury. They were ready to fight to the death for honor.

These Founding Fathers, once friends and colleagues, had become the bitterest of enemies. After years of escalating tension, Burr had finally challenged Hamilton to a duel. In the end, only one man survived, but their infamous rivalry lives on.

This is a collection of PRIMARY documents 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I am writing this review to make sure that people know that this is a collection of PRIMARY sources. Since there are no editorial reviews posted on Amazon, I assumed that this book was a collection of articles by contemporaries DEBATING history. In any case, although this book wasn't what I was looking for, it seems very substantive as far as primary sources go. It also seems like it is directed more at history teachers looking for teaching materials.

Contains articles (written by historical figures from John Winthrop to Thomas Jefferson to Frederick Douglass) about the original English colonization, the question of Native Americans, Puritans and religious tolerance, the Revolutionary War, the formation of the Constitution, the National Bank, Sedition Act, Jay Treaty, Louisiana Purchase, Federalism, immigration, expanding suffrage, annexation of Texas and war with Mexico, slavery, secession, and Reconstruction.

Editorial Review:

Volume 1 covers important issues and events in American history from early exploration and settlement in the New World to the aftermath of the Civil War. It is divided into four sections.

The Message Behind the Gettysburg Address. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This little book not only talks about Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, but gives some background behind it as well. The first part of the book deals with the Civil War and slavery. Some background is given about the Battle of Gettysburg. Then some information concerning the ceremony for the dedication of the cemetary and battlefield and how President Lincoln was invited. The book tries to debunk some myths concerning Lincoln and the Gettysburg Address (e.g. that Lincoln didn't spend any time thinking and writing about it). It concludes with a look at the impact that three-minute speech had. I enjoyed reading this book and found it both fun and educational. I had heard most of the story before, but it's nice to be reminded of it. This is a good book for students in the 2nd-5th grades. It's fairly easy to read and gives a solid background and history about the Gettysburg Address.

Editorial Review:

Four score and seven years ago...

So begins one of the most important speeches in the history of the United States -- Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Given on a cold November day, it wasn't much of a speech, really -- just a few remarks. Not meant to be remembered.

But these few remarks have been remembered. Why? What was the true meaning behind them? Where did they come from? Why is it so important that we never forget what President Lincoln said on that cold November day?

A great borad book for your little ones 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

We have purchases a series of this author's and/or publisher's boardbooks for our kids (now 6 and 4). They are a very simple, well illustrated history book that the kids enjoy reading or have read to them. This one was no exception. The information is very simply put forward in a sentence or so each page with a large illustration. Both usually get the kids asking questions at least a few times throughout the book. That allows us to add additional information and details. If your litte kids are wondering about the national anthem and you want them to understand how it was written and where, pick up this boardbook - they'll enjoy it.

Editorial Review:

Fewer than two hundred words tell the story of how Frances Scott Key observed the Battle of Baltimore in September 1814 and was so moved by the sight of the flag still flying at dawn that he wrote the poem that became our national anthem. Included in this little book are the words to the first verse of 'The Star-Spangled Banner' along with the admonition that we should stand up, remove our hats, and place our hands over our hearts when this song is played. This book is for children of ages 4-8.

Editorial Review:

"My grandparents valued freedom, but even more they valued opportunity. They appreciated America for that gift."--Bill Eckhardt, a third-generation German American.
Descendants of German immigrants form the largest single ethnic group among the United States population today. They came to this country as farmers and craftspeople, students, teachers, and laborers, and today they count among their descendants Presidents of the United States, sports stars, entertainers, scientists, writers, and businessmen. In fact, German American influences are so deeply embedded in the culture of the United States that many people are unaware of their origins. Hamburgers and hotdogs, American kindergarten ("children's garden" in German), most of the customs we associate with Christmas, and even the Easter bunny and his eggs all spring from the German American community.
The German American Family Album traces the growth of that community from the first German to reach the New World in the year 1000 (his name was Tyrker and he was a companion of the Scandinavian seafarer Leif Eriksson) to the 7 million German Americans in this country today. In their own words--from diary entries, letters, interviews, and personal reflections--and with photographs and clippings culled from family archives and the press of the day, we learn of their life in the old country, of the decision to leave home, the often wretched trip to America, and the new life they found once they got here. Their three-centuries-long history of achievement in the United States is a moving and inspirational story. To see it and hear it through the eyes of the immigrant is an experience that makes history personal and immediate.
