Wonderful Biography of the Statue of Liberty 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful book about the Statue of Liberty. It is very moving and I am very impressed with it. I teach ESOL students so immigration is a factor in all my students lives whether they are living here for the rest of their lives or just visiting here for a couple of years while their parents attend university here. I am also a big fan of Doreen Rappaport who wrote wonderful picture books about Martin Luther King Jr. and John Lennon. Lady Liberty tells her story by covering life stories of major figures involved in the creation of the statue. This is quite effective. I learned more about the making of the statue than I had before and I felt very in tune with the people who made the statue happen. The French governments and the US governments weren't all that interested in the project, they had other concerns on their minds and it was more of a bother than anything anyone wanted. It was the pushing of some people from both continents to make it happen and the rest liked it. The courage of the creators was enormous because at any time, people could have convinced them to call it quits. Human creatively and determination is always a good tale.

Editorial Review:

A powerfully moving, authentic portrait of the Statue of Liberty, told through the eyes of those who created her and illustrated in glorious detail.

"Soon America will be one hundred years old. I share my dream of a birthday gift."

It begins in 1865 as a romantic idea, but ten years later Édouard Laboulaye’s dream catches fire and takes shape. Sculptor Auguste Bartholdi gives the dream the form of a lady, holding a torch to "enlighten the world." Engineers, plasterers, carpenters, coppersmiths — many of them immigrants — work together to turn the lady into a monument over 100 feet tall. Joseph Pulitzer calls on readers to help fund a pedestal, and hundreds send in nickels, dimes, and even roosters for the cause. Doreen Rappaport’s historically accurate, poetic vignettes and Matt Tavares’s magnificent images remind us of the true origins of a national symbol — and show that it took a lot of people to make the Lady.

Helping our children understand the Vietnam War 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Growing up in the 60s and 70s, I was very aware of the Vietnam War. I was not old enough to be a warrior or a peace activitst. However, I watched and read a lot about the war. Even at a young age, I knew enough to get information from different points of view.

In the first decade of the new century, few children and teenagers have much understanding of the lessons of the Vietnam War. This is a serious lack. To be informed citizens, we need to understand our own history. But how do you explain such a complex war to a 10 year old?

I gave this book to my 10 year old son in anticipation of a trip to Vietnam. He enjoyed it and was able to be quite articulate in discussing a number of things about the war.

DK does a good job of making history relevant by using a visual presentation. It would have been much more difficult to get a child or young adolescent to read a print-only book about a "parents' generation" war. Each page has several color photographs and then uses these to explain the history of the war. This particular book makes an effort to be even handed by presenting information about the American troops, the protesters, and the various Vietnamese factions. It shows the weapons used by both sides. There is a discussion of Agent Orange and Napalm. The medical sections shows how both the Americans and the Vietcomg treated their wounded. The section on "The Television War" helps explain how television shaped the American reaction to the war.

At the end of the book there is a helpful glossary of terms. There is also a "Find Out More" section that lists useful websites and has a list of museums and memorials to visit in the US.

I would recommend supplementing the book by encouraging the child or adolescent to talk to adults who served in Vietnam, or protested the war. Following these discussions, one might ask the child to consider the similarities and differences to the current war in Iraq.

Vietnam War complements the new look of the Eyewitness series by touring the major battles of the Vietnam conflict.

A fascinating presentation on President Lincoln 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I'm sure that there are plenty of biographies out there on President Lincoln, but I have not seen any that give us as good a kid-friendly view on him until this one. The photos add an unparalleled personality that draws in the reader, and they truly are beautiful. The book presents a great summary of Lincoln's life and-- most impressively-- even tackles some of the darker moments, as is approriate for the target elementary/middle school audience. It is informatve and an easy, educational read that should prove great for research.

Deserving of the Newbery 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This biography on Abraham Lincoln is balanced perfectly, a great blend of basic information and detailed facts, without ever becoming irrelevant or too deep. Photographs enhance this effect, including a page that shows the effects of age on Lincoln's face throughout his presidency, and historical artifacts like posters and handwriting samples. This is the perfect Lincoln primer for someone just starting research, or for a middle school student with an assignment.

Editorial Review:

A description of the boyhood, marriage, and young professional life of Abraham Lincoln includes his presidential years and also reflects on the latest scholarly thoughts about our Civil War president.

Fun History Lesson 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I read this book to my pre-K class, who just loved it. Learning about Lincoln's hat habit along with the other significant things in his life was great. It made the kids listen to the entire book (hard for some 4 and 5 year-olds). I even had one boy show up the next day with notes in his hat!! My 7-year-old son loves the book too.

Great for younger children 5 out of 5 stars.

I find this a very good book to use with my first graders in learning something about Abe Lincoln. The pictures are good and the anctedotes relate to the children.

A Good Reader 5 out of 5 stars.

As a reader, this is a good product. While it may perpetuate some popular myths or stereotypes about Lincoln (big hat, black clothes, simple but wise gentle-man) - so what? More truth than fiction. In that, this little reader does the valuable services of endearing another generation to our greatest President.

Editorial Review:

Illus. in full color. Abraham Lincoln, one of our greatest presidents,

started out in life as an absent-minded frontier lawyer. How did he nudge his

memory? He stuck letters, court notes, contracts, and even his checkbook in his

trademark top hat. When he took off his hat, it was all there!

Surprisingly comprehensive 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This surprisingly comprehensive little book addresses over 40 questions children would dream up about a slave's life...and a few they wouldn't. What did slaves wear? What did they eat? Would you live with your father and mother? What if your father belonged to another slave owner? Did the children have to work? What games did they play? Were any black people free? While the answers are by necessity simplified for the targeted age group (9-12) the content is honest and relatively thorough. I think this provides an excellent foundation for helping children understand this sad time in American history. Includes web and physical addresses of seven historic/interpretive sites.

Editorial Review:

It is hard to imagine that, once, a person in America could be "owned" by another person. But from the time the colonies were settled in the 1600s until the end of the Civil War in 1865, millions of black people were bought and sold like goods. Where did the slaves come from? Where did they live when they were brought to this country? What kind of work did they do? With compassion and respect for the enslaved, this book answers questions children might have about this dismal era in American history.

Welcome to Samantha's World - 1904 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I use this book in my classroom as a reference book. It contains plenty of information about toys, dolls, games, and the things that children do at different stages of American History. The students enjoy this series, as most history text books do not focus on children's activities of a time period.

well done! 5 out of 5 stars.

Definately one of the best in the series. My favorite part of the book was the focus on child labor. It was quite appalling to see how children were abused as factory laborors (however it was tastefully done). A great addition to any children's l;brary.

What Do Authors Do? 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent book for teaching children how books are created by an author and then published. It is a humorous account of the ways authors find their ideas and the rewriting necessary to create their stories. I plan to use it as an inspiration for my third graders as they write their own stories.

Good childrens book 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is good for elementary aged kids. It explains how writers get their ideas and how they go about writing and publishing a book.

Editorial Review:

A sprightly text and colorful illustrations follow two creative people-and a talkative dog and cat-through the writing process step by step, from the inspiration for a story to the satisfaction of sharing the book with readers. Eileen Christelow based this instructive picture book on questions children asked during her classroom talks around the country. Simple enough for young children to understand, and with the entertainment value of fiction, "What Do Authors Do?" is children's nonfiction at its best.

Good Reading 5 out of 5 stars.

I love Laura Ingalls Wilder and her works. This book tells more about the real person and the real family. Very interesting. I feel like I know her, though reading this book.

Editorial Review:

Though best known as the author of the Little House books, Laura Ingalls Wilder led a full, rich life that spanned almost a century of American history. All through her life Laura saved mementos of her past, including early writings, letters, drawings, and photographs, which have been lovingly preserved in private and public collections across the country.

Now, for the first time ever, these photographs, writings, and memorabilia have been gathered together in one incredible volume by noted Little House historian William Anderson. Each gorgeous page of LAURA'S ALBUM is a doorway into the private world of Laura Ingalls Wilder, and offers a unique glimpse of what her life was like. Here is the fascinating true story of this remarkable pioneer woman's life as well as an unforgettable tale of our own American past.

Experience pioneer life!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Barbara Greenwood has written a wonderful book that is as much fun for adults to read to children as it is for the children to read themselves. She doesn't just 'tell' about the Robertson's, she 'shows', drawing the reader into their lives...a pleasant place to be. I especially love Granny's story about how she came to America,on a ship, from Scotland.

The book is beautifully illustrated...all the way through...by Heather Collins. The pictures are so well done that, even as an adult, I would like to step into the scene!

There are instructions for simple, fun activities such as growing a potato plant, dyeing fabric using an onion, or making a cardboard jumping jack; pioneer games that will even entertain today's children for hours such as shadow shapes or knucklebones; and recipes that are easy for children.

Reading this book to a child is a great 'stress releaver'...it's like a little escape from the treadmill of life!!!

Editorial Review:

In an unusual blend of fiction and nonfiction, A Pioneer Sampler chronicles one year in the lives of the Robinson family. Illustrated historical notes enlarge on the social history and describe activities related to the stories, from churning butter to predicting the weather. Young readers are invited to try their hand at these tasks to experience a bit of pioneer life.
