The book is well written for my 2nd graders. Their interest soared in reading after completing this book.

I would have given this book five stars if there had been just a few more activities in it.

The book reads as non-fiction literature and is interspersed with good photos and interesting sidebars. There are also some useful activities for the child to do within the text to reinforce what is learned.

This book would be useful for all grades but can be read independently in the middle school grades. The book contains a glossary, index, web site suggestions, bibliography, listings of museums and parks and other handy references.

This interesting biography with excellent illustrations and primary source photographs provides facts and fun! An excellent index and table of contents provides easy navigation. The chapters are well-written, beginning with a interest-grabbing first chapter describing Edison's introduction of the electric lights to the public. Historical events and settings build a broad understanding of the lives and times of inventors and builders who paved the way for modern times.

Yona Zeldis McDonough did a wonderful job describing "Who Was Harriet Tubman? I read this book as a part of a Social Studies Unit on African American History to my Kindergarten class they were totally immersed. Even though the audience of students were young. They still answered the comprehension questions that I frequently asked through out the book exceedingly well.

The reason why I selected McDonough's book over other books about Harriet Tubman was that it spoke of all aspects of history that occurred at that particular time.

As a child I had studied Nat Turner, Abraham Lincoln, and of course Harriet Tubman, but it was amazing how many historical events occurred that she was an active part of.

I feel that after reading this particular story that I have learned a great deal about an important icon in African American History, reading this book has enabled me to trace the beginnings of all beginnings. Harriet Tubman was truly a phenomenal women. She gave of herself again and again . . . By assisting others to freedom through The Underground Railroad, her service in the Union Army, and her many years of service as a nurse.

As I read this book to my class they emphasized that they could literally see the scenes as I was reading them. Some of the terminology was intense and I used appropriate wording to make it age-appropriate for my students.

Either way this is an excellent read for all -- and I hope to check out more books by this very informative author!

Born a slave in Maryland, Harriet Tubman knew first-hand what it meant to be someone's property; she was whipped by owners and almost killed by an overseer. It was from other field hands that she first heard about the Underground Railroad which she travelled by herself north to Philadelphia. Throughout her long life (she died at the age of ninety-two) and long after the Civil War brought an end to slavery, this amazing woman was proof of what just one person can do.

Remember The Alamo
Davy Crockett Aileen Wells Parks
The book Davy Crockett is about one of the most famous men in the history of America. It tells about how he became a great hunter with Daniel Boone. One of my favorite parts is where he defended the Alamoe for his country. The book is great if I had a choice from 1to 10 I wold give it a flat 10 all because of its description and its pictures. This is the kind of book that I would conceders to people that love to learn about history.
The author is Aileen Wells Parks. If you ask me I think she writes good books for all ages. I think she should write more and more books for men, women, and children. I encourage her to write more.
The date this book was published was 1986.
A brief discription is when he goes to hunt for his first time he dosen't bring anything home. But the next week when he goes to hunt he finds a new friend named Danile Boone.

I learned a lot about indians and life in early america. I liked learing the facts and what really happened. It was really exciting. I think 8 and up should read this book. (...).

As a teacher, this book was helpful in terms of providing great pictures and overall ideas. However, I found that the maps, some dates, and stopping points are historically incorrect. Therefore, I do not use it in planning my lessons. I use it only for pictures.

One of the best books for children published. It makes the people who took part in the Corps of Discovery come to life. As they set out on this great adventure where no American citizen had ever gone before, the reader feels the excitment. The author tells of the training and preparation that went into the trip. Her story brings the reader along for the journey.

Already at a young age, Elizabeth understood that American society considered girls inferior to boys. As she grew older, she became increasingly angry that women did not have the right to claim ownership of property or the money they earned, they could not attend the same colleges as men, they were not allowed to vote, and they were expected to have babies and stay home to take care of their families. She realized that one of the most effective ways to change women's status as secondary citizens and to change the existing laws was to give women the right to vote.

Together with several like-minded women, she wrote the Declaration of Rights and Sentiments, which called for a broad range of social, economic, legal, and political reforms to boost the status of women in American life. The Declaration was signed at the first American women's rights convention held in Seneca Falls, NY, in 1848. The demand for women's right to vote was the most controversial reform proposed at the convention, and Elizabeth worked the rest of her life to fight for women's right to vote.

This well-researched book does a nice job in explaining to children that the right to vote plays an important role in improving women's economic and social status. By emphasizing this link, the book embraces several concepts in economics related to human resources, work, discrimination, and property rights. Historical narratives about Elizabeth Cady Stanton abound, but Elizabeth Leads the Way is one of the few accounts of Elizabeth's leading role in the women's rights movement that is accessible to younger readers.

i've been researching the history of the anthracite region and specifically the experience of miners and their families, and this was one of the most useful books i've seen. by detailing the different jobs the boys in the mines did, bartoletti also manages to describe how a mine worked in ways that other books on mining don't really explain. it covers the whole process by telling stories about the different jobs the kids did.

the photos too are wonderful. you get a real sense of how much these kids are both children and yet so remarkably grown up, just from the looks in their eyes.

the stories about them range from terrifically sad (i cried a few times) to heartwarming and sweet. the book doesn't come off as bombast or pure sentiment, but keeps a very journalistic view of these kids & their reality.

i highly recommend it.

The southern United States, in the 1800's was a land of the tobacco and cotton industry, and a land of slaves. Born in 1821, Harriet Tubman was born a slave in Maryland, and then she never thought that she would be the most famous conductor on the Underground Railroad. Early as a child, Harriet, or Minta, as she was called, was often sold from person to person, after getting a blow to the head from her master, because she wouldn't help capture an escaped slave. In her later years, she escaped to the north and became a free person. Then, after she beomes free, she helps the slaves that she knows from her old home escape through the hidden passes thus becoming a conductor for the Underground Railroad. All was well until a new law is passed: The Fugitive Slave Law, a law in which any runaway slave in the free states can be brought back to their original masters. Because of this, Harriet Tubman starts to take her runaway passengers to St. Catherines, Canada, where all former slaves would be free from the Fugitive Slave Law. Soon, after taking large numbers of slaves to Canada, Harriet makes a huge decision to take her parents along with her on her next journey. After a hard, back-breaking journey, they finally make it to St. Catherines. However, after transporting close to 300 runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman ended her journey and started a new one serving as a spy and a nurse. Before and after dying in 1913, Harriet Tubman was recognized as a great person and as a "Moses" to many of the escaped slaves that she rescued. Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad, by Ann Petry, is a great biography that has suspense, adventure, and tells a great and accurate version of Harriet Tubman and her life.

Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad, is an excellent historical biography, full of suspense as to what will happen to the slaves. One good example of this is when Tubman is facing her master, ordering her to catch an escaped slave, and waiting to see what will happen should she not do so. Also, when Harriet tries to rescue her parents, Old Rit and Old Ben, you can't wait to find out what becomes of them. While stealing a horse and wagon to help her parents, Harriet comes face to face with the keeper of the horse stable. The reader will wonder what will happen next. Will she escape or will the keeper catch her?

This book also had a great portion of adventure. When Harriet had started out on her journey, she wandered out into a land that she had never saw before. She never knew what lied beyond a few miles or so. She ventured out and was always on guard of being caught by the slave patrols. The hardest part of Tubman's journeys and escapes was convincing her parents to flee, but eventually they are convinced and Tubman takes them as far as Canada.

Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad, by Ann Petry, does a good job in accurately describing and presenting the right dialogue for Harriet Tubman. Petry described Tubman as she is known from history, a short, muscular woman who had the strenght and heart to set her people free. Being called "Moses" for setting her people free from slavery, earned her name in history. The use of dialogue from the period also served in making the book more interesting.

Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad, by Ann Petry, is a great biography to read for not only the history, but for the adventure, the suspense, and the satisfaction that one person can make a difference. I rate this book a total of five stars out of five.
