Editorial Review:

Add seamless, interactive, user-controlled delivery to your Flash applications. This book builds upon your understanding of basic ActionScript (AS) syntax with the foundational skills that you need to use XML in Flash applications and AS2 or AS3 to migrate your existing applications.

Beginning with an introduction to XML, XML parsing methods, and a short introduction to AS2 you learn how to create a universal XML load/onload Class as well as a universal XHTML parser. Then you learn how to use Components using XML as the data source, including the menu, menubar, datagrid and tree component. Finally, a tutorial project-the design and development of a Real Estate Web site that contains an XML search engine-pulls it all together with hands-on experience.

All the applications use XML as the data source and are written as class files. Select parts of the Real Estate Web site are redeveloped in AS3 for purposes of illustration. The new XML class is presented and specific code examples demonstrate techniques to apply methods and use properties. Particular attention is paid to the differences between AS2 and AS3 and how to effectively transition from one AS version to the other.

The companion CD contains code for all of the properties and methods of the AS2, AS3, and XML class examples. Components for the Real Estate Web site project are also provided.

* Build on basic ActionScript syntax skills
* Add seamless, interactive, user-controlled delivery

Editorial Review:

Given its ability to deliver high-impact experiences even over low-bandwidth connections, Flash has become the de facto standard for hundreds of thousands of multimedia web developers worldwide.

Flash 5 now includes a new full-fledged programming language called "ActionScript" for controlling animation and multimedia. It's a quantum leap from the bare-bones "Actions" supported in Flash 4, andActionScript: The Definitive Guide is the first book dedicated entirely to documenting and demonstrating this new language.

ActionScript includes all fundamental programming constructs (variables, loops, conditionals, functions, etc.), and is inextricably fused with Flash's authoring behaviors and animation timelines. Because ActionScript is based heavily on the ECMAScript Language Specification (ECMA-262) and is syntactically nearly identical to JavaScript, Macromedia expects thousands of existing JavaScript programmers to migrate to ActionScript.

This book is divided into three sections.

  • "ActionScript Fundamentals" introduces both programmers and non-programmers to the new language by first describing fundamental programming concepts and then delineating in detail the components, syntax, and usage of ActionScript.
  • "Applied ActionScript Code Depot" shows you how to use common applications, such as processing online forms.
  • "Language Reference" is a concise and detailed reference that makes all ActionScript globals, properties, and objects, including extensive implementation samples, easy to find quickly.

Code samples are also available from the "Code Depot" on theauthor's web site devoted to Flash developers.

Topics covered in this book include:

  • Step-by-step tutorials of the most common ActionScript behaviors
  • Object-oriented programming in Flash
  • Intelligent interface development
  • Server communication
  • Dynamic content generation
  • Password protection
  • String handling
  • Message boards
  • Basic physics
  • Games

ActionScript: The Definitive Guide is structured so both programmers and non-programmers can learn how to use ActionScript. This book will take you well beyond simple Flash animations so you can create your own enhanced Flash-driven sites.

The Best Flash Book To Date 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

What I believe we're witnessing here in Hillman Curtis is the creativity of the new age artist. This is the new Picasso or new Monet. Well, that's my opinion. :)

What I enjoyed most about this book was not only the step-by-step "how-tos" but also the philosophies, the reasons behind placing an image here or making something move in this way as opposed to that. Hillman Curtis describes making an impact, making someone stop typing that message on AOL IM and sitting up to watch the spot you create (hard to explain without giving too much away - get the book!).

I also enjoyed the step-by-step process of creating storyboards for clients, of business tactics and "getting a client."

Overall a great read and highly recommended.

Slightly overrated. 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Don't fall for the hype on this one. I love Hillman, and find him to be inspirational, but the book is less than it has been made to seem.

Editorial Review:

Presents deconstructions of successful, real-world Flash animations and interfaces, chosen because they reveal most clearly the techniques crucial to being a successful motion graphics designer. Softcover.
