Imaginative retake on an old story! Fabulous illustrations! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book for the youngest readers! Your little ones will delight in the Gingerbread Cowboy's chase across the barren lands of the Old West as he runs to save his life. Many animals are after him but he manages to outwit them all, even the clever old coyote, with the help of the rancher's wife.

Kids will laugh when they hear the Gingerbread Cowboy chant, " ... You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man." They will certainly enjoy the colorful illustrations of the animals depicted against the contrasting, muted background of the Old West desert and mountains.

Hazel Rochman, BOOKLIST reviewer, describes this story best (see Editorial Reviews above): " ... universal trickster tale with a cowboy slant."

Editorial Review:

"Giddyup, giddyup as fast as you can. You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!"

The Gingerbread Cowboy can run from the rancher, he can dash past the javelinas, and he can giddyup right by the cattle grazing on the mesa. But what happens when he meets a coyote sleeping in the sun?

Janet Squires and Holly Berry retell this classic tale with a Wild Western flair, filled with rodeo-romping fun.

MY BOY LOVES READING IT 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

Recommended by this reading specialist 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm a children's reading specialist and author (Teaching Kids To Read for Dummies). I use these books with kids who are really starting to take off with their reading and consistently get great feedback. Kids love the Magic Tree House series so if you're looking for great gifts or a bunch of books to keep your reader hooked, buy the lot.

Editorial Review:

This is a great book, very light hearted and catchy. Be prepared to keep it handy, it's one of those books you will read to your child, niece, nephew.... over and over again.

A New Connection 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this for my "almost" grandson's first birthday. I remember it from my farm and ranch childhood and now it will enchant another generation. It is somewhat "Dick and Jane"--very easy to memorize. Also it is nice to now have the board book for the really little ones.

Great for Little ones who love horses 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My 14-month-old loves this book. We read it over and over again! We live in a fairly rural area and we walk every day to see horses. The book's simple drawings of horses (and cowboys) working and going about their day capitvates my daughter. It's suggested for kids around four, but it's a real hit with our toddler. I wish they had a Cowgirl Small, but that's just me.

Editorial Review:

Cowboy Small takes good care of his horse, Cactus. In return, Cactus helps Cowboy Small get work done on the range. Together they round up cattle for branding and live the good life. At night, Cowboy Small eats at the chuck wagon, sings with his friends, and sleeps under the stars.

Editorial Review:

Although the Little House stories are traditionally seen as "girl" books, boys might be happily surprised if they take another peek at their sisters' shelves. Little House in the Big Woods--the first book of the series and Laura Ingalls Wilder's first children's book--is full of the thrills, chills, and spills typically associated with "boy" books. Any boy or girl who has fantasized about running off to live in the woods will find ample information in these pages to manage a Wisconsin snowstorm, a panther attack, or a wild sled ride with a pig as an uninvited guest. Every chapter divulges fascinatingly intricate, yet easy-to-read, details about pioneer life in the Midwest in the late 1800s, from bear-meat curing to maple-tree sapping to homemade bullet making.

Wilder's autobiographical tales ring with truth and excitement. Readers will receive a perfectly painless history lesson, and in fact will clamor for more. Beloved illustrator Garth Williams spent years researching young Laura's pioneering family. His soft-line illustrations bring to life the full, simple days and nights in the family's log cabin. No one can read just one Little House book! (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

"These partners are going places... together, of course." 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

In another happy pairing of Cowgirl Kate and her horse, Cocoa, Partners contains four more stories of the antics of this spunky cowgirl and her best pal. In the first story, Cocoa is due for new horseshoes, but balks at the suggestion, declaring, "I don't want horseshoes. I want cowboy boots." When Kate tries to fit him with the boots, Cocoa realizes with disappointment that they will never fit a four-legged creature. Once Kate explains that horseshoes are everywhere on the ranch because they bring good luck, Cocoa is delighted, prancing about in his new horseshoes, pleased to be the bearer of good luck. Whether playing hide-and-seek (or as Cocoa likes to call it "hide-and-eat") or practicing roping, Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa are partners in everything, working out compromises and solving every dilemma with good humor. Playful and affectionate, Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa tackle life together, sharing the chores and the fun, because "partners do everything together". Betsy Lewin's paintings are particularly energetic and colorful, full of the action of life on a ranch and the joyful friendship of a little cowgirl and her favorite horse, a chapter book on working together and problem-solving for young readers. Luan Gaines/2006.

Editorial Review:

Cowgirl Kate and her best friend Cocoa are as feisty as ever as they play hide-and-seek, get new shoes, and learn the true meaning of friendship. They're partners through thick and thin, and partners do everything together.

One eyed monsters- Oh My! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

My daughter is 5 and will be in Kindergarten this fall. (she turns 6 this November) and she loves this tale. We read almost a full chapter, some are very long for a five year old, every night. The next day, oh yes, I am mean Cyclops, a Lotus Eater, etc. and she is brave Odysseus.(who is part super hero as she ties a towel around her neck! Since she is five and we are Christians I didn't tell her they were "gods" as it would take way more explanation than her dad and I wanted to get into. She first saw a picture of Posieden and thought he was a monster so we went with that. When she's older, we'll get into the Greek god mythology. I do change some of the wording, but not much, as it can get tedious for one so young. Highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

A modern retelling of the Homerian classic. The Trojan War is over, and Odysseus must now face the hungry one-eyed giant Polyphemus, the vengeful sea-god Poseidon, the sorceress Circe, and many other dangers on his long and perilous journey home.

Joe, Fred, and Sam are watching a western show, when suddenly they get sucked back into the book. The boys find themselves in a desert.Fred starts to hear something. It's a stampede. They are about to get hit by the stampede! Will anyone come to their rescue?
Some of the funny parts are when they almost get run over by the cows and at the end when you see the hole in Fred's hat.In one of the pictures the cow has 5 utters so tht was funny.I think you should read this book because it's just as funny as the first two Time Warp Trio books.

The Case Of The Dead Chickens 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is about a brave cowdog named Hank. He tries to solve the case of the dead chickens. He has to find clues, like feathers, to catch who is eating the chickens. In the horse pasture he is chased and bitten by horses. Hanks owners wife throws rocks at him for looking at clues in her garden. Then, no thanks to a ranch mutt named Drover, Hank started finding clues and thought the suspect could be a skunk. So, on the other side of the ranch Hank waited in a corner by the chicken house. Suddenly, he sees the skunk go into the chicken house. When the skunk came out with the chicken, Hank went after him. Hank solves the case of the chickens and gets rid of the skunk.

Editorial Review:

Who--or what--has been killing Sally May's chickens? Everyone on the ranch is a suspect--even Hank! Can he solve the crime and prove his innocence before he's relieved of his command...and condemned?

USA Today calls the hilarious Hank the Cowdog series "...the best family entertainment in years."

Hank is a scruffy, smart-alecky supersleuth with a nose for danger and an eye for the ladies. And as Head of Ranch Security on a West Texas ranch, he's usually up to his ears in all kinds of amusing trouble. Whether he's called upon to bark up the sun, investigate suspicious goings-on, or defend the ranch against marauders, Hank's hilarious, hair-raising adventures will delight readers young and old alike.

More an equal than a sequel! 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 30 people found this review helpful.

"Swallowdale" continues very much where its predecessor, "Swallows and Amazons", leaves off, with the Walker children returning to "that remote lake in the north of England" one year after the events of the first book and looking forward to another couple of weeks of fun, sailing with their friends, the Amazon pirates. Plans quickly begin to go awry, however, and Ransome turns events away from the anticipated activity of sailing on the lake to an altogether different sort of fun, as the children take off camping and exploring in the surrounding fells and mountains.

The book has all of the fine qualities that make its predecessor such an excellent read for children (and adults) of all ages. Ransome's prose is a delight throughout, his characters engaging and the events that befall the children entirely believable. As in all of the other books of this series, simple pen and ink drawings by the author add considerably to the enjoyment. If only the world (and the Lake District!) was still like this!

Incidentally, although this was the second of Arthur Ransome's "Swallows and Amazon" books to be published, it is best read after the third volume, "Peter Duck", because it is set chronologically after the events of that book, and makes occasional back reference to it. You will enjoy "Peter Duck" much more if you read it BEFORE you read "Swallowdale". And if you enjoyed "Swallows and Amazons" you will certainly enjoy this.

Editorial Review:

The first title in Arthur Ransome's classic series, originally published in 1930: for children, for grownups, for anyone captivated by the world of adventure and imagination. Swallows and Amazons introduces the lovable Walker family, the camp on Wild Cat island, the able-bodied catboat Swallow, and the two intrepid Amazons, Nancy and Peggy Blackett.
