Editorial Review:

Our White House: Looking in, Looking Out is an astounding collection featuring more than 100 award-winning children's book authors and illustrators. It is much more than a history about the home and office of U.S. presidents and their families. Commissioned by the National Children's Book and Literary Alliance, this stunning picture book transcends the bounds of educational textbook, or any particular genre, for that matter. It includes essays by historians and well-known nonfiction writers (like David McCullough), fictional stories, poetry (including a memorable poem about Lincoln and a butterfly by Kate DiCamillo), imagined letters to the president, texts of actual speeches, memoir (including an essay by Linda Johnson Robb about the eerie history of a White House room where she once stayed), transcripts of TV interviews, and clever games such as a "Best in Show" presidential pet contest and a "Who's in the House?" presidential board game. Among the book's most captivating features are the "illustration essays" which feature stories or ideas rendered completely through pictures. Notable examples include David Small's sketch journal "Backstairs at the White House,"depicting all the people who work in the house and keep it running, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt's "Four Freedoms" speech illustrated by Calef Brown, Peter Sis, Ed Young, and Stephen Alcorn.

Our White House will likely be a favorite of children--and adults-who love presidential trivia, historical facts, and old stories. Children who weren't White House buffs already will surely be drawn into this colorful, fun history of an iconic building that simultaneously tells the story of the United States. My 4 1/2 year old son loved this book. The facts were very interesting. He spends a lot of time looking at each picture and remembers the facts as I have read this book to him several times. Each time through it he finds different things to keep him excited. I would say it's his favorite book right now!

History? 2 out of 5 stars.
24 of 29 people found this review helpful.

While at times Howard Zinn puts forth interesting theories, facts occasionally get in the way. For example, he claims on page 209 that "The beginning of the Declaration of Independence says that 'We the people'..." 'We the people'? In the Declaration of Independence?

I'm not sure if this is just an issue with Rebecca Stefoff's adaptation, or Zinn's facts, but it's clearly an issue. This isn't a history book, but more a political opinion book which happens to use history to support the author's arguments.

--13 year old history buff

Editorial Review:

Praise for A People's History of the United States:

"Professor Zinn writes with an enthusiasm rarely encountered in the leaden prose of academic history, and his text is studded with telling quotations from labor leaders, war resisters and fugitive slaves. There are vivid descriptions of events that are usually ignored."-Eric Foner, The New York Times Book Review

Howard Zinn's first book for young adults is a retelling of US history from the viewpoints of slaves, workers, immigrants, women, and Native Americans with color images, a glossary, and primary sources. Volume one begins with a look at Christopher Columbus' arrival through the eyes of the Arawak Indians and leads the reader through the strikes and rebellions of the industrial age.

Activites are very good 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book is typical of people who do not understand the Civil War was not about Slavery. It was made into a war about slavery to keep European countries from recognizing the South. If that would have happened there would be a CSA today. There is a lot of history in this book that is very good, but it has the tendency of beliefs that are not true. The activities in this bood are most excellent and we have done some of them. These are actually as they could have been.

Editorial Review:

History explodes in this activity guide spanning the turmoil preceding secession, the first shots fired at Fort Sumter, the fierce battles on land and sea, and finally the Confederate surrender at Appomattox. Making butternut dye for a Rebel uniform, learning drills and signals with flags, decoding wigwag, baking hardtack, reenacting battles, and making a medicine kit bring this pivotal period in our nation’s history to life. Fascinating sidebars tell of slaves escaping on the Underground Railroad, the adventures of nine-year-old drummer boy Johnny Clem, animal mascots who traveled with the troops, and friendships between enemies. The resource section includes short biographies of important figures from both sides of the war, listings of Civil War sites across the country, pertinent websites, glossary, and an index.

The best book, by Jacqueline Shaw 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This nonfiction book tells you everything you ever wanted to know about the Titanic. Some of the information the book tells you includes, how they built the ship, the day everyone boarded the ship, the types of people that were on the ship, and finally how the boat sank. I also enjoyed the pictures in the book. Some of the pictures were of the rooms, the details of the ship, and the boiling room. I recommend this book to people who want to learn about the Titanic and are from grades 1 through 5.

This book is a excellent book 5 out of 5 stars.

Wonderful Junior World History Book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was absolutley delighted when this book arrived. It wasn't quite what I expected - it was far better!! It is not a workbook like the other books in the "Complete Book" series, but rather, a book for self-education and reading enjoyment. It covers world history from the beginning to the present, in language that is just right for the Grade 4 to 8 age groups. Each page has colour pictures to add to the attractiveness of the book, and each open spread is a complete lesson in itself. If you want to give your children a good general knowledge of the world, its people, and what has gone on in all the ages before they were born, then this is the book for them. I'm so glad I bought this book.

Editorial Review:

This book is an outstanding learning tool that offers students in grades 4-8 a comprehensive history of our world, from the dawn of human history to the present day. Readers will discover vivid descriptions and outstanding illustrations throughout the pages of this conveniently organized volume.

Beginnings and Endings. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This wonderful children's book explains the history of the ill-fated ship, from the beginning of its maiden voyage in England to the discovery of the boat at the bottom of the ocean depths by Dr. Robert Ballard. The illustrations are lively and vibrant, giving depth to the easy to understand, yet enchanting text. I have read several children's books about the Titanic and this one seems to have the best of everything.

Politically Correct Revisionist History 1 out of 5 stars.
17 of 24 people found this review helpful.

This book, and it's companion, The New Big Book of America, are written from an extremely liberal and politically correct point of view. The authors bend over backwards to make the white colonists and Presidents appear as arrogant, indifferent, and overbearing in regards to everyone who is not a white male. Each President's page is around 50% about the President's actual achievements, and around 50% about the current Native American, Women's suffrage, and Civil Rights issues of the day.

These authors have an agenda, and it comes across very clear. If you want your child influenced by this politically correct revisionist history, then be sure to pick this one up.

Editorial Review:

Our original Big Book of U.S. Presidents has sold more than 200,000 copies! It was also a Scholastic Book Club Selection, and continues to be a perennial favorite in the $9.98 Courage Children's line. This updated edition features a revised profile of George W. Bush, plus a look ahead to our next president. In fact, it will be published less than 3 months after the 2004 election, close to inauguration, and will be one of the first books to feature a profile of the newest president. This fascinating introduction to U.S. government includes famous quotes, achievements, and a detailed timeline for quick reference to historical eras and events, plus more than 50 illustrations.
