It's your chance to help Nancy throw a Fancy Party! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Young readers can help Fancy Nancy throw the fanciest party ever by decorating the invitations, table, food and even the guests with the most divine collection of reusable stickers I've ever seen! And, unlike many sticker books, there seems to have been as much care taken with the wonderful backgrounds as there was with the stickers -- and the collection of stickers is generous and lovely.

There was obviously a gread deal of care that went into the design and writing of this book, and it is guaranteed to give the children in your circle hours and hours of delightful fun.

What better way is there to learn how to be an excellent hostess than by learning from the most elegant hostess of all-time -- Fancy Nancy, herself!

This is a super sticker book that girley-girls are certain to Love! Love!! Love!!

Editorial Review:

Meet Nancy, who believes that more is always better when it comes to being fancy. From the top of her tiara down to her sparkly studded shoes, Nancy is determined to make everything she and her family do as fancy as possible. With this sticker book, you can help Nancy plan the fanciest tea party ever!

Two boys' review: Simply, a classic 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This silly story centers around self-responsibility. The children panic because they know their mother won't be happy if she comes home and find the house a mess. The fish fluctuates between being an annoyance and a voice of reason.

The story stars a well-meaning cat who tries to release the children from an afternoon of boredom. He brings excitement, which quickly devolves into chaos...or so it seems.

This is a fun bedtime story, nothing more, nothing less. My sons weren't looking for a debate about latch-key children and abandonment. We'll leave those reviews to the sociology graduates.

If your children enjoy this book, I also recommend, The Cat in the Hat Comes Back.

I couldn't imagine our children's bookshelf without these Dr. Suess books, too:

The Cat in the Hat
Green Eggs and Ham
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
The Lorax

Editorial Review:

To accompany the release of the live action movie of The Cat in the Hat, starring Mike Myers, HarperCollins are proud to present Dr. Seuss's original, classic tale of the coolest, hippest cat in history! When the Cat in the Hat steps in on the mat, Sally and her brother are in for a roller-coaster ride of havoc and mayhem! The Cat can rescue them from a dull rainy day, but it means lots of thrills and spills along the way. The wonderfully anarchic Cat in the Hat is one of the most popular characters in children's fiction, and this book is ideal for budding readers to tackle on their own.

I like Katz's artwork a lot 4 out of 5 stars.

Very round, very cute, very... childlike, for lack of a better word.

And I always appreciate the effort in making a multiracial cast of kids, not everybody does that.

Would be nice if the flaps were a little stronger, though. Unfortunately, they *will* rip off, so this book has to be supervised only :(

I'm so tired of reading it it! 5 out of 5 stars.

My 13 month old daughter LOVES this book! She wants me to read it all day everyday. When she is walking around more often than not she has it in her hands. She like pointing to the babies and lifting the flaps. Your child may or may not be as intersted in the book as she is but its worth a shot.

My daughter-in-law loved this book. 5 out of 5 stars.

I brought this book for my daughter-in-law to read to our grandchild. They are teaching dual languages (English and Spanish) to him as his other grandparents are Chileans.

Helped My Child to Read 5 out of 5 stars.

My sons's teachers recommended this book to help support his interest in reading. We love them as each book is managable in size and he felt quite accomplished finishing each book and each larger box (and getting a prize too!) Strongly recommend.

LK 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of the best purchases I have ever made. My five-year-old began reading the very first day. I can't recommend these books enough. A great buy.

My son feels like a big boy. 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought these books because my son loves to read. He has been reading simple "stories" that I write on the computer but never real books of his own. When these came he just whizzed through the first series. I took them to his Kindergarden class because they were too easy for him. One to Series 2 and 3. These offered a bit more challenge and he loves them.

The stories really aren't that interesting. I believe he would agree. Each night he gets to read a book to me then I read a book to him. He feels much more involved in bedtime storytime.

Great series.

Editorial Review:

Journeys to the end of the world, fantastic creatures, and epic battles between good and evil -- what more could any reader ask for in one book? The book that has it all is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, written in 1949 by Clive Staples Lewis. But Lewis did not stop there. Six more books followed, and together they became known as The Chronicles of Narnia.

For the past fifty years, The Chronicles of Narnia have transcended the fantasy genre to become part of the canon of classic literature. Each of the seven books is a masterpiece, drawing the reader into a land where magic meets reality, and the result is a fictional world whose scope has fascinated generations.

This edition presents all seven books -- unabridged -- in one impressive volume. The books are presented here according to Lewis' preferred order, each chapter graced with an illustration by the original artist, Pauline Baynes. Deceptively simple and direct, The Chronicles of Narnia continue to captivate fans with adventures, characters, and truths that speak to readers of all ages, even fifty years after they were first published.

Not gonna say it's the worst book I've ever read... 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

But I can't think of a worse one...

Let me just say that I bought the first book on a whim and was not dissapointed in the least. The characters were not fleshed out as well as they could be (or not at all really) but the idea of Ember, this underground city that is slowly dwindling away was just so enchanting that I had to keep reading. I really enjoyed the first book, and have read it several times over.

So, in saying that, when the People of Sparks came out I was extremely excited to see what Duprau had come up with this time.

Nothing. That's what she had come up with. The idea of the city of ember, which is what attracted me to the book in the first place, was completely gone, replaced by a completely worse setting, horrible characters, and a quite unintelligent plot. Reading this book was like reading a child's idea for the reason some people might go to war, and what ridiculous things they might go to war over.

Don't read it, and if you are going to read it for the sake of the first book, don't buy it. At least get it from the library. It was absolutely horrific, and uninspiring, and had zero plot. I tried to read it. I tried to like it.

I couldn't even finish the novel. And I know that is going to get reactions like, how am i saying all these things when i did not finish it. I couldn't finish it! That was how bad it was. If you do buy it you will feel like someone came up and stole 9 bucks out of your pocket. Promise.

Editorial Review:

The People of Sparks picks up where The City of Ember leaves off. Lina and Doon have emerged from the underground city to the exciting new world above, and it isn’t long before they are followed by the other inhabitants of Ember. The Emberites soon come across a town where they are welcomed, fed, and given places to sleep. But the town’s resources are limited and it isn’t long before resentment begins to grow between the two groups. When anonymous acts of vandalism push them toward violence, it’s up to Lina and Doon to discover who’s behind the vandalism and why, before it’s too late.

Thank you, Mem and Helen, for coming out of retirement one last time! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Dear little babies with their characteristically busy little fingers and stubby little playdough toes delight the reader with their realism. Thank you, Helen Oxenbury! A singalong rhythm that is "easy to read to" encourages the listener to join in after a couple of repeats. Thank you, Mem Fox!

Although these two gifted women had "retired", this book, and the Baby World, is as fresh and light-hearted as these babies are. Focusing on the similarities rather than the differences, their message of peace is tenderly and subtly played. I can't wait to give this as a baby gift!

Editorial Review:

As everyone knows, nothing is sweeter than tiny baby fingers and chubby baby toes. . . . And here, from two of the most gifted picture-book creators of our time, is a celebration of baby fingers, baby toes, and the joy they—and the babies they belong to—bring to everyone, everywhere, all over the world!

This is a gorgeously simple picture book for very young children, and once you finish the rhythmic, rhyming text, all you’ll want to do is go back to the beginning . . . and read it again! The luminous watercolor illustrations of these roly-poly little ones from a variety of backgrounds are adorable, quirky, and true to life, right down to the wrinkles, dimples, and pudges in their completely squishable arms, legs, and tummies.

Great little book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is such fun for my two year old grandson! It is tough enough to last through many readings, and he is fascinated by opening each one of the little doors as we read through it. At this age, he probably does not really "get" the story line, but he loves the surprise of each little door opening, and saying the name of the animal.

Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.

The City Under Ground? 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have just purchased this book, but the description sounds startlingly similar to Suzanne Martel's "The City Under Ground" -- which is the book I was looking for because I remember reading it back in the 70's and thought my kids would enjoy it now.

Martel's is out of print. I'll edit my star count after reading the book.

Great book for the authors first book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The City of Ember is written by Jeanne DuPrau and it was published in 2003. It was the the authors first book and as a first book I thought that it was a lot of fun to read. The book is meant for a younger audience because the heroes of the story are two young 12 year old children.

Ember is a large city in the middle of the dark. The only source of light for the city is the street lights. The street lights are turned on and off every day by the time keeper.

Everything in the city of Ember is warn out and and second-hand, everything but the food. The people in the city of Ember are able to grow limited amounts of food but most of their food is kept in the store houses. The store houses were filled with food in the past by the builders.

At the age of 12 all children are assigned a job to do. The jobs are assigned by drawing a the job title out of a hat. Lina wants to get the job of messenger. Doon wants to get a job working in the power stations of the city. When Lina draws out the job of pipe works and Doon gets the job of messenger.

Doon asks Lina to trade with him. He feels that pipe works is better than messenger at least it will get him closer to the power plant. Doon feels that if he can get into the power plant he can finally understand electricity. Electricity is one of the few things that he feels that he does not understand.

When Doon finally gets into the power plant he sees a loud coughing machine that he feels he will never understand.

As messenger Lina runs around the city delivering messages from one person to another.

The lights of Ember are no longer staying lit like they should. The power plant is getting run down. The lights of Ember are starting to go black in the middle of the day and the citizens of Ember are frightened. Lina spends most of her day sending messages to people simply so they do not have to leave there homes and have to risk being put in the dark when the lights go out.

Lina's grandmother unearths an old parchment and that parchment ends up in the hands of Lina's baby sister. The baby sister plays with the parchment tearing and chewing it into little pieces. When Lina finds the paper in the hands of her baby sister it is unreadable. The only thing that she can tell is that it is written in the fine block print of the builders. She feels that the message is important.

Lina and Doon spend the rest of the book trying to solve the mysteries of the parchment. The other people that they show the parchment to don't seem to think that it is all that important. From what little they can make out of the document most people feel that it is simply some sort of cooking instructions or something.

While Lina and Doon are trying to solve the parchment, the city of Ember is slowly falling apart. The people of Ember know that something needs to be done but no one seems to know what needs to be done. Is the answer in the strange almost unreadable parchment?

This book is definitely written for a younger reader but I still really enjoyed it. I read the book in two days. I barely put it down the entire time I was reading. I even went on to read the first part of "The Children of Spark" (second book in the series) that was in the back of the book. I later went out and bought the other three books that go with the city of Ember series. This book is great for a young reader and simply fun for an adult reader like myself.

Editorial Review:

Many hundreds of years ago, the city of Ember was created by the Builders to contain everything needed for human survival. It worked - but now the storerooms are almost out of food, crops are blighted, corruption is spreading through the city and worst of all - the lights are failing. Soon Ember could be engulfed by darkness-But when two children, Lina and Doon, discover fragments of an ancient parchment, they begin to wonder if there could be a way out of Ember. Can they decipher the words from long ago and find a new future for everyone? Will the people of Ember listen to them?

Olivia's Family Traditions
It did not matter how much discussion there was to be had with his editors during the process of creating Olivia Helps with Christmas, there was one thing that Ian Falconer was absolutely certain about... Santa Claus would appear NOWHERE in the book. Olivia and her brothers and sisters would do everything they could to get ready for Santa, and they sure would be anticipating Santa's arrival, but readers would not see the fabled Kriss Kringle. With all the ideas that were put on the table for this book, that was one Falconer would not stray from.

And with good reason.

This was to be a different type of Christmas book. A book about how a family celebrates Christmas, and how a lot of family holiday traditions really revolve around preparations. In fact, the reason the book has such a personal feel to it is because many of the traditions that Olivia and her family celebrate were taken straight from Ian's childhood memories: Being asked to set the Christmas table was a big honor for Ian (as it is for Olivia in the book). The caroling by the piano, the "Santa watch," the order in which things were done (tree up Christmas Eve, dinner, caroling, hanging stockings), even the phrase "warming your trotters by the fire"--all of it has roots in the Falconer home. And since Ian never did catch a glimpse of Santa at Christmas, neither could Olivia. It's for the best, really. Olivia likes to be the true star of her books--Santa would have met his match.

For your viewing pleasure: A bonus illustration of Olivia not available in Olivia Helps with Christmas!
