Cadence and rythym 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book has a cadence and rythym that my daughter found very comforting. It was her favorite book as a toddler - the one she wanted read every single night. I read it to her so many times, I no longer looked at the pages - I just recited them from memory as she sat in my lap and turned each page.
That time is gone now (my daughter is 16), but she still remembers the time sitting in my lap and the reading of this book - over and over and over... Much later we graduated to the Harry Potter series (I read the first 4 to her, then she go too impatient to wait as each new one came out) but Goodnight Moon was our first shared literary experience - and for that precious time, I say this truly is an awesome book.

Must Have Childhood Classic 5 out of 5 stars.

Goodnight Moon is a delightful book and a wonderful addition to any child's book collection. As a little girl, it was mine and my sister's favorite book. Having just announced her pregnancy to the family, we've all commented that Goodnight Moon will surely be read to my sister's little one often. In fact, the baby will probably end up with more than one copy!

The rhythmic text detailing a nightly routine reassures little ones as they prepare for slumber that all is well. Read before bedtime, the simplistic nature of the book enables even very young children to remember the story and relate to the little bunny's experience. Goodnight Moon helps children realize that bedtime is normal and routine and nothing to be anxious about. I remember saying goodnight to some of my toys and knowing then that it was ok to fall asleep. It's just a wonderful book that I highly recommend.

This is a childhood favorite of mine explaining the life of a child who is having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day! He goes through why he is having this terrible day and at the ending there is a little surprise. Very good for younger children, even some older children. Great to read in a classroom!

What Fun 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a book that children can't help but chuckle when they it is read. It's just fun and Alexander is so loveable like another character,Cyrano in Life's Little Lessons: An Inch-By-Inch Tale of Success, another fabulous piece of children's literature with inspiring messages, laughs and a great bonus reading guide for parents and teachers. Check this out.

A great book for a childs bad day! 5 out of 5 stars.

A wonderful, fun book to lighten the mood. My daughter loves to read this. I use the phrase with my eight year old daughter: "some days are like this..." (my daughter always smiles and finishes with: "even in Australia" for me. Cheers her up every time. We read it often and have for a while. It helps that her name is Alexandra.

Editorial Review:

The story is about Alexander and his very bad day. Read about his best friend that deserted him, and no dessert in his lunch bag and lima beans for dinner and kissing on TV. Paperback.

Just plainly classic, a thing what kids love to see 5 out of 5 stars.

Nothing to say new or much about this classic book. Even the youngest child can be attracted to this book. Our very very young son giggles when we reach the colorful Monday to Saturday pages. All the different colors stand out, and the story brings back memories. It is something that every home should have. After two kids and reading it countless times, it is still fun to read it, and thus you won't get tired of reading it for your kids.

As good as they get for little ones 5 out of 5 stars.

Mesmerizing game--good addition to the 3 stories! 5 out of 5 stars.

George's Pond: Created in the Beloved Tradition of Charlotte's Web West's Time Machine

Being the author of West's Time Machine and George's Pond as well as an educator, I often recommend reading to my son and my students. This book mesmerized my students for hours so we had to purchase the game for the class. They kept quoting unusual things held within its pages. There were many amazing things on every card that allow the reader to try and solve the mysteries that it presented. Its loads of fun for all who dare play. Perfect for any age.

My students love the fact that each new story by Gordon Korman and Peter Lerangis rewards real contestants big cash rewards for solving their mysteries. Involving the readers in the mysteries with this game made the stories and happiness they felt from reading them last so much longer.

This was an exhilarating game for my classroom.

Unwanted Inheritance 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 23 people found this review helpful.

Mix together equal parts "Star Wars" and J.R.R. Tolkien, then add a generous helping of Anne McCaffrey's dragon-riders and a few random shreds of Garth Nix.

Obviously originality is not Christopher Paolini's strong suit. But that's only one of the problems with "Eragon," "Eldest" and "Brisingr," the first three books of Paolini's Inheritance series -- while there's some promise in Paolini's first book, the second and third are lifeless slogs of painfully pompous plotlessness that occasionally rev up into a battle.

The titular character is lucky enough to stumble across a strange blue stone while hunting. After failing to sell it, Eragon finds that it's actually a dragon egg, and the baby blue dragon inside selects him -- yes, him -- to hatch for and remain with forever. All the Dragon Riders were killed off by Evil King Galbatorix long ago, but for the weird old recluse Brom, who becomes Eragon's mentor. And Luke, I am your father... wait, wrong story.

When Galbatorix's men destroy Eragon's home and family, Brom and Eragon flee to find the mysterious rebels known as the Varden, and rescue the beautiful elf Arya who is haunting Eragon's dreams. But while Eragon and his dragon Saphira learn many things -- and make new allies -- the journey to the Varden brings them a terrible (and totally predictable) loss, and leads them to Eragon's first battle.

"Eldest" picks up immediately afterwards, with Eragon badly wounded and the leader of the Varden murdered. But despite the rebels' turmoil, Eragon is told that he has to accompany Arya back to her home city of the elves, to be taught by a crippled elf named Oromis. Unbeknownst to Eragon, his hometown of Carvahall is being ruined by a band of Galbatorix's soldiers, and his newly-engaged cousin Roran may be their only hope. And our hero's truncated training leads to strange new changes in his body and mind, as he prepares for a devastating new battle against Galbatorix -- and a horrifying new discovery. Yes, you can probably see it coming.

And "Brisingr" picks up right after that, with Roran and Eragon going on a mission to rescue Roran's fiancee from the Ra'zac, while Nasuada is forced to undergo a bloody challenge to retain leadership of the Varden. And even after another fight with Murtagh, Eragon has to deal with a forthcoming wedding, Roran's assignments on dangerous missions, and the upcoming nomination of a new dwarf king. And when Eragon finally returns to Ellesmera, he learns new facts about his own past, and is given a possible key to his future...

Lofty elves, kings-in-waiting, humble farm boys who become revered leaders for no particular reason, nasty goblinesque creatures, cryptic mystical women, special swords, evil tyrants who are evil because they just are, wise mentors, and telepathic dragons in a variety of colors. Christopher Paolini never met a fantasy cliche that he didn't like -- and the "Inheritance" trilogy simply oozes with them.

At first, Paolini paints these typical sword-and-sorcery stories with rather stilted but promising prose -- "Eragon" has some raw potential, and you can detect Paolini's enthusiasm as he explores his invented fantasy land. Unfortunately with "Eldest" -- Paolini's prose becomes bloated, sluggish and painfully smug, with dialogue that becomes more painfully wretched with each chapter ("I walk between the candle and the dark").

It also signals the end of a fast-moving plot -- for two books straight, Paolini treads water in a sea of lace-making, anti-religious preaching, engagement woes, sword woes, and political woes. He whips up a battle every now and then -- either at the book's end or when things get too dull, and spends most of the rest of the time pondering on whether it's okay to kill people. The nadir of all this is Eragon's training, the bulk of which consists of doing yoga and watching ants -- even the hilariously homoerotic moments with Oromis and Roran can't make all this entertaining.

But the biggest problem is Eragon himself -- despite being portrayed as a noble, brave, compassionate soul with a brilliant destiny, he's none of that. He's given a little belated angst over killing people (though this doesn't stop him from coldly killing a young soldier begging for his life), when he isn't being uniformly worshiped by the Varden, Elves, Dwarves and villagers.

The supporting characters are not much better -- Brom and Oromis are intriguing but deeply underdeveloped as characters. And while Eragon spends three books drooling after the elf Arya, she's a snotty ice princess whose looks are all she's got. Everyone else is either a 2-D bad guy who hates Eragon, or a 2-D good guy who just loves him.

Christopher Paolini's not-terribly original fantasy series starts off with the flawed but readable "Eragon," before sliding downhill into the painful "Eldest" and the tediously plotless "Brisingr."

Great book. My son's favorite. At 9 months of age he knew it by name.

Repetitive, but that's the idea. Young kiddos, remember? 3 out of 5 stars.

There are days when I am just thoroughly annoyed by this book.

And yet it remains a classic, and I grudgingly agree.

How can anyone not love the awesome repetitive rhymes and varying colors and animals? And how can you not get chills at how these animals are all staring at each other?

The original of interactive books and still probably the best.

A Realistic Utopia 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book sets the stage for a utopian society, and it's very believable. Who's to say that this couldn't really happen sometime in the future? However, what I really liked about this book, is that once Jonas found himself, he wasn't afraid to take action and stand up for what he knew was right. Loved it. The first time I read it was the sixth grade, and I still enjoy it. It's one of my favorite books of all time, it's a relatively quick read for an adult, but it really makes you think.

From compassion to acumen, Lowry incorporates all there is to learn to develop maturity in this little wonder of a book. 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

In a self-contained community lives eleven-year-old Jonas. This community differs from real life settings. Citizens receive primary duties and adhere to community's regulations. Transgressors are chastised regardless of their age. There is uniformity in everything, from appearance to experience. Freedom does not exist because no one is aware of it. Religion is also nonexistent yet everyone lives in harmony because there is only one group called "the elders" who decide what is right and wrong; what is good and evil. Every child who turns twelve acquires a vocation suitable to his or her capacity and personality. Upon reaching the age of twelve, Jonas is assigned the single most important role, the giver. However, during his training Jonas discovers that outside the community there is life completely discordant from what he is exposed to. That people in this kind of life experience all sorts of emotions foreign to him. Finally, Jonas makes sudden decision to escape.

This is a valued reading for youths and adults as well. The repercussion of Jonas' escape is a healthy fodder for dialogue between parent and child. As part of his Language Arts project, my son has to make a movie poster based on a particular story. Co-incidentally, he picked up this book. Not only he and Jonas are the same age, they also have similar disposition.

Editorial Review:

When Jonas turns 12, he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver--who alone holds memories of pain and pleasure in life. Now there can be no turning back from the truth. Paperback.

"Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" is a fanciful and entertaining book that I read to my children when they were young. I purchased one for my newest grandchild and my son was thrilled to have a book from his childhood to read to his daughter.

A great classic 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is nothing but the silliest tall tale ever, about a town where food "falls from the sky", but it works.

My nieces really sit still for this one, which is sometimes a bit of an accomplishment :)

I will say that it goes on a bit long in parts, describing the way food falls from the sky, but it's not that big a deal to me.

What an Adorable Story ! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is delightful story that both parents and children will enjoy reading together. It is among my children's top favorite books along with Life's Little Lessons: An Inch-By-Inch Tale of Successand The Big Squeal: A Wild, True, and Twisted Tail, both with a bonus reading guide for parents written by teacher-authors.

Editorial Review:

If food dropped like rain from the sky, wouldn't it be marvelous! Or would it? It could, after all, be messy. And you'd have no choice. What if you didn't like what fell? Or what if too much came? Have you ever thought of what it might be like to be squashed flat by a pancake?

GREAT lesson for children and adults! 5 out of 5 stars.

Have you filled a bucket today is a wonderful book about being kind to others! Filling someone's bucket or bucket dipping is such an easy concept for children to understand. It has helped make my children aware of other people's feelings. I highly recommend Have you filled a bucket today! And I have heard fabulous things about "the bucket lady!"

The Best "Message" book for Children ever Written 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

As parents, we have all read and told hundreds of wonderful stories filled with important messages for our children. This book translates the most simple lesson of all, "do onto others, as you would want done to you". Treat people with love and respect, and you will in turn be treated with love and respect. The simple analogy of filling the bucket is easy enough for adults to understand. Every household, school, doctor's office and church should have a copy of this book on their bookshelf. Thank you Carol for your wonderful inspiration!

Editorial Review:

Through simple prose and vivid illustrations, this heartwarming book encourages positive behavior as children see how rewarding it is to express daily kindness, appreciation, and love. Bucket filling and dipping are effective metaphors for understanding the effects of our actions and words on the well being of others and ourselves.
