This a great price for a great series of books but it has a major problem. The type is so tiny, it's hard to read. I bought these books for my 8 year old and it's really a strain on her eyes to read them for long periods of time.

I honestly thought that before I read this book that Anne of Green Gables was about a girl who lives on a farm with her aunt and has all sorts of normal, sappy adventures. I thought it was going to be a dull, happy-happy sort of book. What I got was almost the exact opposite of what I expected. Even though the plot of the story was sometimes childish, I kept wanting to read the book to find out if the Cuthberts (specifically Marilla) would ever accept Anne. I liked how throughout the story Anne actually grew up, unlike other books I've read.

Sometimes the story got a little dull and repetetive and I had to say to myself "The chapter'll be done in a few pages, just get it over with". It was almost like a pattern. One chapter would be happy, the other Anne would have gotten herself into trouble again. I enjoyed some of the scenes where Anne would get herself into trouble, and sometimes found myself cheering on Anne as she whacked a boy for calling her 'carrots'. Also, the way Lucy Montgomery developed Anne's personality was enjoyable. I liked how Anne would actually stand up for herself when someone did something to her, and how she thought like an individual and was different. All in all, it was a cute, if childish, book. I would recommend this to anyone under the age of 13.


Anne of Avonlea is the sequel to Anne of Green Gables. Anne has grown up and is 17 years old, but is still every bit the imaginative girl she was in the last book.
Anne of Green Gables was a little childish for me, but Anne of Avonlea was more... not grown up, just different. In Anne of Green Gables, the schemes that Anne and her friends make up are over fantastical, like children will make up. The man they imagine they'll marry has to be 'dark, mysterious, tall'. In Anne of Avonlea, Diana's boyfriend/future husband doesn't match really at all what she wanted before. It adds a touch of reality. At first when I read on the back of the book that Marilla was going to adopt twins, I felt kind of resentful. I was like "They won't be as good as Anne.". But, when Davy and Dora joined the family at Green Gables, I fell in love with them. Prim and proper Dora, but rebellious and mischievous Davy. I laughed when I heard Davy put a toad in Marilla's bed.
The characters are well developed, changing from children to teens to adults. I appreciated the fact that Montgomery put in 'bad days' where one of the characters would have a horrible day and come home and complain. It (again) made the book more real. I had no trouble reading this at all, because there was never a boring page.

In Anne of the Island, Anne Shirley leaves Green Gables and heads for Redmond College. On her second day there she meets a new friend, Phillippa Grant, Phil for short.

Anne of the Island was better in some ways than the other books. It shows Anne's confusion on love and growing up. It also made me think more, specifically in the chapter of Ruby Gillis's death. It made me think about heaven and the afterlife.

The thing that irritated me and pulled me out of the story was that it was so corny. Anne hears Gilbert is sick and suddenly realizes that she did love him after all. 2 people she hardly knows propose to her. It reminded me that this was a fiction novel and filled with clichéd things. I also think that Anne depended too much on her imagination, and that it was slightly ironic that when her exact, ideal man came around that she turned him down.

The book was pretty good in the sense that it wasn't as silly, but when it comes to reality, it pretty much fails.

Brave New World takes place in a utopian London around the year 2540, which started with a good idea, but went way wrong. Humans are produced in large numbers in a high-tech factory without the filth of viviparous reproduction. The babies produced are organized into five castes and are conditioned specifically to do their part in maintaining their society. As the reader progresses farther into the story, they find out what is sacrificed for the stability of the utopian world they occupy, when the reader explores this world through the mind of a man named John, who has not been conditioned to accept this world that suppresses the emotions we value so much today. John comes from a "savage" reservation in New Mexico; where the humans remain that practice our modern day culture. With advances in science allover the world making our lifestyle obsolete, the "savage" lifestyle is repulsive in the eyes of the rest of the brave new world. See how our blind ignorance can lead to catastrophe.

Although an attempt to sum up the novel in only a small amount of words would be in vain, I can offer that this book is a must read for anyone who is capable of thinking beyond ideas provided by way of the text.

This was SUCH a great book. The story Brave New World entertained me more than any other book I have ever read before. It not only was an incredible plot, with amazing creativity, and imagination, but also has shocking conversation that challenge values accepted in our society today, and challenges the minds of all intellectuals willing to relate to the characters, and attempt to draw parallels between Huxley's story, and the story our culture continues to write, as we advance to where Huxley's world began.

To me, a book is worth no more than the thoughts it provokes once I have set it down. By this standard, I am still not done calculating its genius, because I have not yet finished thinking, or talking about themes from the book.

This makes the top ten list out of all the great picture books we read to our kids when they were young. I never tired of reading it. So simple, symmetric, even musical. The story? How does the peddler get the monkeys to give back all the caps they've stolen from him and carried up into the tree? Okay, I'm the publisher of One Monkey Books, so call me biased. But try this one on your three or five or year old, and really get into singing, "Caps for sale! Caps for sale! Fifty cents a cap!" Ah, the amount of philosophy and beauty and imagination you can cram into a story this short! I have never read the original French version, but the English translation is as powerful as I could hope for, a surreal story of fantasy that speaks such eternal truths of love and life and the sheer faith of childhood.

We have a man who has put aside his childhood dreams to grow up. His plane crashes in the desert, and it is here he meets a young prince from a distant asteroid.

As we have the gritty real story of survival, we have a powerful and yet just as real story of this little boy's adventures and discovery.

It's a strong and complex parable, and also just a great story besides.

A Beautiful tale, beautifully told 5 out of 5 stars.

I just finished reading this book to my 10 year old. I think it is an amazing, once in a hundred years kind of book. It is touching, honest and thought provoking. As an adult, you'll have to read it more than once to unfurl the layers and interpret the underlying meanings. Older children will pick up on the allegorical nature of the story, while younger children may be frightened by the sometimes harsh circumstances of Edward's life. I believe this book is ideal for children from 4th grade up. It should also be required reading for middle and high school English students as an fine example of the use of personification, metaphor and parable. Beautiful. Gives me the chills just thinking about it. I will read it again.

This book was purchased for a nine year old grand daughter; once we read it, the decision was made to give it to all the grand children, aged 9, 6, & 4. It is our fervent desire that to this family, this book will, indeed, attain the status of 'heirloom'.
Although the years have created a somewhat fuzzy memory, this edition reminded me a great deal of the first time I'd ever read this story. it's my opinion that anyone who loves books will not be disapointed with this purchase. I am able to recommend it with no hesitation.

The worst kids in the neighborhood decide to be in the annual Christmas Pageant and turn the weeks leading up to the event into a very funny, read. I've read this book to many classrooms of children over the years and it's guaranteed to make them listen and laugh.

Once again, Robert Sabuda has created a wonderful visual masterpiece based on Clement Clarke Moore's classic tale of The Night Before Christmas. It delights the child in all that open the cover, each page brings new surprises. I'm a 6th grade resource and reading intervention teacher and all my students enjoyed the book, wanting to explore the pages again and again. At home, toddlers to great-grandmothers have enjoyed it. I highly recommend that you add this work of art to your holiday collection.

Spectacular Pop-ups, beautifully done, very intricate. Most pages have two separate pop-ups. I will enjoy reading this to my grandchild and we will marvel together at the scenes that magically unfold before our eyes. Not suitable for handling by toddlers without adult supervision because, as with all pop ups, the pages can be torn easily by exuberant little hands!

What makes fiction important 5 out of 5 stars.

I know this is the classic debate of all time when it comes to literature: Is it about beautifully written prose (THE STORY OF EDGAR SAWTELLE, incidentally, is a good example of this problem) or does it tell a compelling story? (yet the prose itself is not its strong point).

It seems that many works of fiction these days are of the former and unfortunately, not enough of the latter. I recently re-read this book along with another classic, JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN, after a discussion I had with a friend about this very subject. As a middle-aged person, I often look back at the books that made a difference in my life and much of the time, it's not about the author's writing style. Achebe's is a plain, straightforward style, but it's what he is conveying that is so striking about this story. (I am a bit miffed at the "English" teachers and the like who are downing this book!) Bottom line: I was left with a lasting impression that stayed with me. I can't say that many books do this today.

All I can say is pick up this read and decide for yourselves. Bottom line, this story is just as relevant today as it was so many years ago when it first appeared. These issues are universal and the world today is replete with similar conflicts. It's unfortunate to have to go back in time to find classic works of fiction, but sometimes there are exceptions. Check out--SIM0N LAZARUS, a word of mouth wonder more should know about.
