Personal fincances are one of the roughest and often toughest jobs a person faces in their lifetime. Couples often fight more over finances than all other topics combined. Now there is a book written specifically for those interested in making the very most of their financial lives -- and doing it from a Christian perspective. Squarely in the center and theme of the book is the strong and critical role played by the individual's personal relationship with God. There are discussions on tithing and such interesting topics as "God, Ceasar and You." Editorial Review:

One of the most powerful forces in business today is the positive psychology movement -- overcoming self-defeating attitudes and developing our talents and positive traits. Much of the new thinking, in fact, stems directly from the concepts in Norman Vincent Peale's great classic bestseller, The Power of Positive Thinking, which has been translated into forty-two languages and has sold over 22 million copies.

Now, after years of extensive research and field testing, working in cooperation with the Peale Center and major corporations nationwide, Scott Ventrella has adapted those concepts into a systematic program for people in business to achieve greater levels of personal and professional performance. The Power of Positive Thinking in Business provides a practical way for each of us to develop and actually strengthen the ten traits of a positive thinker. Inevitably, our performance rises to new levels when we learn how to overcome negative attitudinal barriers such as fear, lack of self-confidence, and low self-esteem, and instead develop the traits that characterize a positive thinker: optimism, enthusiasm, belief, integrity, courage, confidence, determination, patience, calmness, and focus.

The Power of Positive Thinking in Business encourages us to concentrate on objective, rational thinking instead of self-limiting beliefs and negative self-talk. The result is an increased ability to deal effectively with tough situations and difficult people, in both business environments and personal lives. Together, rational thinking and the ten traits of a positive thinker can turn defeatist behavior into productive actions that will overcome the toughest of challenges with powerful, positive results.

Best of all, these practical yet powerful concepts are applicable to businesspeople at all levels, disciplines, and functions within an organization, and have been adapted to appeal to people of all faiths.

do you want affirmation & great discussion? 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I thought the book did a great job affirming various temperaments and how those strengths can show up in leadership. I also appreciated the warnings for different personality styles. I think this book would be a huge asset to teams of leaders who can read through it and discuss it while on a retreat or at an extended meeting.

Why you should read this book:
* You will be affirmed. The book affirms leaders of various personality types and affirms leaders who do not currently hold an official leadership position.
* You will be encouraged. This field of teaching is plagued with leadership principles taught by leaders who essentially communicate that in order to lead better, "Just be more like me." This book counteracts this pandemic.
* You will talk. You will have a frame of reference to talk with other leaders on your team about the strengths and weaknesses that you all bring to the table.

Editorial Review:

Jackson and Bosse-Smith provide anyone in a position of leadership, whether an entrepreneur, business owner, supervisor, manager or pastor, insight into themselves and their team members so that they may lead and guide themselves and others more effectively. Leveraging Your Leadership Style takes the guess work out of the equation and offers concrete solutions to obtain greater results and success.

Where is the Biblical Basis? 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I have read Barna for years and have consistently credited him with being a most able marketing research, marketing, and leadership practioner of the finest level. His successes would exhibit this.

However, equally as consistent has been my criticism that Barna makes emphatic, foundational assumptions claiming God said, when in fact God has not said, e.g. Jesus and Paul were the consummate marketing men when the Biblical proof he offers is bogus.

Here it is more of the same, applying supposed God says to Church Leaders who are visionary leaders for change in fulfilling God's vision. What does Barna suggest here and in the books he has written on vision? Quoting Proverbs 29:18, he defines visionary leadership as the pastor sensing what better future he has in mind for a group of people as a blessing. If only he would clearly tie this to the Gospel of Jesus Christ he would be ok. But no, he ties it to some dream, some Joel Osteen like wish and hope inside a person which doesn't equate at all with God's constant revelation of true interpretation/applicaiton of Prov. 29:18 ---- that then turns Servants of the Word, true sent and speaking for God pastors into CEO/Leaders which Barna exhorts here in this work.

Since this is based on business/management principles for leadership, it is useful to those in that pursuit, be they Christians or not. But for Christian church, this is leaven being brought into the church from world. To be rid of, or Barna et al will have to provide Biblical proof for it.

Was Jeremiah a leader sent by God according to Barna's criteria? I don't think he can pass the test Barna presents here. The other prophets and the current cannot either.

This is dangerous work which must be exposed as not for church but for industry.

Editorial Review:

Available for the first time in paperback, Barna unveils the results of years of research and hundreds of interviews, and emerges with a new definition of what leadership is--and isn't.

Some good tips, but not what I was hoping for 2 out of 5 stars.
54 of 75 people found this review helpful.

This book is interesting reading, but to me it read more like a hodge-podge of frugality tips, random anecdotes, and Sunday school lessons than an organized approach to making your money go further. The author is really enthusiastic, and she gives some very accurate and humorous descriptions of the clutter to be found in many homes. But I really had to pay attention to mine the best tips from the book because they got lost in hype, strange personal stories, and religious discussions. Some of the advice in the book struck me as just plain weird, such as to stay away from your microwave because it might explode; to put a bowl of ammonia into a warm oven to clean it (I can just imagine the smell !); to buy food in bulk and re-can it at home (that just sounds dangerous to me); to give someone a year's worth of old magazines tied up in ribbon as a gift. Finally, this book is very religious; there are references to scripture from the Bible inserted into almost every discussion. I don't mind a book on personal finance including some discussion of the spiritual basis of abundance, but I had a difficult time making the connection between the religious ideas presented and the surrounding points, and it just felt like opportunistic preaching to me. Overall I felt this book sort of meandered around without providing any clear direction that would help someone to change the way they think about money. Two alternatives to this book are "Your Money or Your Life: Transforming Your Relationship With Money and Achieving Financial Independence" by Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robin, and "The Tao of Abundance" by Laurence G. Boldt. In closing, I will contribute my own frugality tip....if you want to read this book, do what I did and check it out from the library so you don't spend any money on it.

Shrewd for the right reasons 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Never would I have expected when The Shrewd Christian was recommended for immediate read that it would be such an engaging, "entertaining", encouraging and enlightening book about--of all things, finances!! I rarely read anything in one sitting, but Neil Atkinson kept my attention--through his own story, through a writing style that almost jumped off the page, through his knowledge as well as his passion for his subject. I'm excited about a book which focuses on helping the Christian middle class (plus anyone who elects to read this informative threatise) attain financial freedom--not so we can "have" more but so that we might "be" more about what matters--"kingdom work and relationships". Although I'm not sure if my husband and I can "live well on less than half of the money we make", Neil and his wife Margie's goal, I was certainly challenged to look at how we do live. Thankfully Neil didn't just challenge me, he also gave many, many helpful and practical ways to become "truly wealthy". Bravo to NA and Waterbrook for bringing a radically passionate financial prospective to my attention.

Editorial Review:

If financial freedom seems like an unattainable dream–wake up! Let Neil Atkinson open your eyes to the truth about wealth in this biblically based, practical, readable, funny, and encouraging guide.

If you want to get a grip on your finances, you’ve got to let go of your misconceptions about what it means to be shrewd. The Shrewd Christian will enable you to conquer money, not merely solve money problems. When you change your thinking, you’ll see your lifestyle change. And when your lifestyle changes, you’ll experience true wealth.

Neil Atkinson started out where you are. And now he’s ready to you how to achieve authentic, biblical financial freedom for the rest of your life.

Editorial Review:

Ever feel like you're being watched? This eye-opening book shows how a new technology may soon track your every move . . . and pave the way for the fulfillment of end-time biblical prophecy.

A revolutionary technology called RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) is poised to expose our habits, secrets, and slip-ups to money-hungry marketers, savvy criminals, and government snoops. One day soon, our shoes could keep track of our footsteps. Stores could ID us as we walk in the door. Hidden "tracking units" could log even our restroom visits.

Global corporations and government agencies have already invested millions in a plan that uses tiny microchips to uniquely number and track everyday items. Parts of this Orwellian vision are uncannily similar to the prophesies of Revelation. Chipping inanimate objects is just the start-the endpoint is a form of RFID that can be injected into the flesh. This work-an updated version of Katherine Albrecht and Liz McIntyre's controversial and award-winning book Spychips-is a clarion call to Christians to take a stand against plans to monitor and control people through this unnerving new technology.

Using public records, real-world examples, and biblical prophesies, Albrecht and McIntyre uncover the frightening story behind RFID and show us how to protect our privacy and civil liberties while there's still time.

Editorial Review:

The field of bioethics was deeply influenced by religious thinkers as it emerged in the 1960s and early 1970s. Since that time, however, a seemingly neutral political liberalism has pervaded the public sphere, resulting in a deep suspicion of those bringing religious values to bear on questions of bioethics and public policy. As a theological ethicist and progressive Catholic, Lisa Sowle Cahill does not want to cede the "religious perspective" to fundamentalists and the pro-life movement, nor does she want to submit to the gospel of a political liberalism that champions individual autonomy as holy writ. In Theological Bioethics, Cahill calls for progressive religious thinkers and believers to join in the effort to reclaim the best of their traditions through jointly engaging political forces at both community and national levels. In Cahill's eyes, just access to health care must be the number one priority for this type of "participatory bioethics." She describes a new understanding of theological bioethics that must go beyond decrying injustice, beyond opposing social practices that commercialize human beings, beyond painting a vision of a more egalitarian future. Such a participatory bioethics, she argues, must also take account of and take part in a global social network of mobilization for change; it must seek out those in solidarity, those involved in a common calling to create a more just social, political, and economic system. During the past two decades Cahill has made profound contributions to theological ethics and bioethics. This is a magisterial and programmatic statement that will alter how the religiously inclined understand their role in the great bioethics debates of today and tomorrow that yearn for clear thinking and prophetic wisdom.

Trust blasts Pragmatism 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

If you have been wondering why you're so frustrated watching the News, you need to read this book.

Les Csorba has identified a major defect in our culture. Our motivation is all screwed up. We need to do what we do because it is the right thing to do - not just to get the results that we want.

This book calls a spade a spade and gives helpful solutions to a broken and bleeding culture. It calls us all to be leaders.

Very worthwhile reading.

Editorial Review:

As a generation of baby boomers nears retirement, our country is facing a dilemma. By 2010, there may be a shortage of 4 to 6 million workers, causing a dearth of effective leaders. Nearly every recent crisis--corporate bankruptcies, political scandals, moral failures in the church--can be traced to a leadership deficit. The common denominator? Broken trust.

Author Les T. Csorba sees trust as the most indispensable force between leaders and followers. Here he offers observations gleaned from two decades of experience in government, business, church, and family. Part meditation, part how-to manual, Trust examines characteristics of trusted leadership, including The 7 Principles of the Trust. Finally, the book features interactive elements such as The Leader Check: a guide to evaluating whether you are developing the trust necessary to motivate and richly lead followers.
