• Can we ever afford to buy a house?
• Is it wrong to borrow this much money?
• Which of us should be the record keeper?
• Are credit cards a no-no?
• Do we really need life insurance?
• Why is it we never seem to have enough?

Questions like these can keep you awake at night-or worse. Without a solid financial and spiritual foundation on which to base sound decisions, problems-and not just money problems-tend to multiply in a marriage. And they come whether you're struggling on $20,000 a year or "coasting" on a six-figure income.

Whether you are about to marry or are still in marriage's early years, best-selling author Larry Burkett can steer you around the pitfalls that result from mishandling your money. In this valuable guide he will help you:

• Establish a workable budget
• Discover what kind of insurance you need and how much
• Teach your children about finances

The host of two daily radio programs, "How to Manage Your Money" and "Money Matters," Larry has written numerous books on finances, including Investing for the Future, The Complete Financial Guide for Single Parents, The Coming Economic Earthquake, and Preparing for Retirement.

Worth keeping in the briefcase 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I normally shy away from the platitudes and punditry of self-help and business "rules, tools, & tips", but I saw this book in the uniform sales shop that serves the US Special Operations Command, right next to War of the Flea: The Classic Study of Guerrilla Warfare, and I could not resist.

This little volume will join The Astonished Universe, a French-English side by side poetry book that celebrates life, in my travel briefcase.

I write this sitting by the window of an old estate in Provance, France, while attending a retreat with four others active in the Collective Intelligence movement. I bought it primarily because it was on sale in the bookstore that serves the U.S. Special Operations Command.

Written by a sports writer and producer in partnership with a pastor, it provides the reader with 52 segments, each consisting of a quotation from scripture, and then a two page double-spaced discussion. I found this book over-all to be thoughtful and practical and not at all "preachy."

The authors immediately drew me in, non-practicing believer that I am, by stating up front that this little guide was a means of discovering and/or reintroducing Jesus to your life. That did it for me, I'm ready.

The book opens with an emphasis on truth as the most important element of both faith and performance, then surprised me by emphasizing that how a leader is perceived is something the leader can never hear too much of.

The authors are at one with Peter Drucker is saying that the best lives are those in which the person is deeply enmeshed in a "calling" and striving to please and serve God while being faithful to their own talents and visions, accountable to others, but never subservient to others.

They distinguish between management, which pays people to follow orders, and leadership, which inspires others to work selflessly in harmony with others. They emphasize that leadership is personal, not at all removed or elitist. One segment stresses the importance of breaking bread with those you seek to lead. At this retreat that I am on, the food--vegetarian and the basics--bread, oil, fruit--is being treated as a spiritual celebration in its own right, so I would add that it is not just breaking bread, but doing so in communion with the Earth that gave us the food, and with one another who seek to save the Earth for future generations.

Among the many bullets that I noted:

* Leaders are disciplined in time management
* Leaders use prayer as reflection
* Leaders are teachers, and can teach under all circumstances including hostile
* Enduring leaders are compassionate
* Diversity is good for team building
* Core values are enduring, but in practice adaptation is essential
* Speak to the masses but nurture an inner core of future leaders
* Understand the importance of strategic withdrawals and pauses
* Setting for major announcements or intense dialogs are important--airport hotels are pedestrian, retreats with memorable environments enhance and nurture the intentions and goals
* Chapter 23 was special for me, after 20 years of dealing with opponents who refused to acknowledge the importance of open sources of information that could be shared: the chapter tells us that visionaries *will* be considered lunatic, even within their own families. This is precisely what happened to me in 1992 when I published an article in Whole Earth Review on the need to create a new national intelligence paradigm that was ethical, ecological, evolutionary, and based on open sources of information instead of stolen secrets. The chapter tells us that the price of leadership (whether direct, of men, or indirect, of ideas) is the willingness to bear with persistent pain and rejection in the face of disbelief and constant attack.
* In a separate chapter, the authors tell us that many will know *of* the leader, but very few will really know who the leader truly is.
* Expect to be unappreciated, but avoid sharing too much too soon.
* Know when to move on, and prepare your successors, encouraging them to move into the world "two by two" so they can reinforce one another and learn from one another.

The book ends with the observation that to be strong is to be in faith, and that in praising God, we should be all we can be within his larger framework.

There are many other lessons and anecdotes in this volume, and I recommend it highly.

Other leadership books I have read and reviewed:
The Tao of Democracy: Using Co-Intelligence to Create a World That Works for All
Leadership and the New Science: Discovering Order in a Chaotic World
The World Cafe: Shaping Our Futures Through Conversations That Matter
Building a Knowledge-Driven Organization
The Code of the Warrior: Exploring Warrior Values Past and Present
The exemplar: The exemplary performer in the age of productivity
Leading Minds: An Anatomy Of Leadership
The Chalice and the Blade: Our History, Our Future

Editorial Review:

A bind-up of two books that offers the timeless wisdom of Jesus Christ as it can apply to today's leaders. Practical as well as inspirational, the lessons and techniques are perfect for business leaders, community leaders, anyone who need to interact and motivate diverse groups of people.

I haven't decided whether or not the title of this book is making it more saleable or not. I had a totally different idea about what this book would be about because of the title, and since I hadn't read anything else by Pilzer at the time, I was skeptical.
THIS BOOK IS PHENOMENALLY FASCINATING.
Again, the title is extremely misleading, and after asking the author about it, he said that his publisher gave it that title. Of course, the title of "Why economics are like they are" might be more appropriate, but it is in no way indicative of how PHENOMENALLY FASCINATING this book is.
I am EXTREMELY GRATEFUL that the title made me buy the book, and was happily deceived by it. One of my top favorites ever, and you'll note that I read ALOT. PLEASE read this book- it will make you INFINITELY more informed.

Clear, Helpful, Practical...a definite keeper! 5 out of 5 stars.

Ron Blue's book, Master Your Money was a life changing book for me while in graduate school. While working at my studies I needed a grounding in financial insights since we were struggling grad students but still had to make future plans for our family's finances.
Ron's book answered so many basics and I was so impressed with it that we asked him to write an essay for us at USChurch.Info - America's Church Address. It has proven to be one of our most popular essays we provide online to individuals and families wanting to successfully integrate into a new church.
In fact, we use his new edition as an incentive for Churches to update their Church data in our directory. It has proven very popular for Church libraries.

Editorial Review:

Finally...a financial planning book that presents concepts in an easy-to-understand format. Do you know if you have enough? Do you know how much is enough? If you can't answer these questions, The New Master Your Money is for you. Ron Blue extracts principles from God's Word and applies them to your financial portfolio. Ron's professional experience in financial planning will be an asset to you and to your family for generations to come. This new edition includes important updates and new content you won't want to miss.

Must read material for Christian leaders 5 out of 5 stars.
34 of 34 people found this review helpful.

Having read and reread dozens of books on leadership, I've always found The Leadership Challenge to be among the best. I was certainly intrigued to see Christian Reflections on The Leadership Challenge and my curiosity paid off in a delightful read that contains both inspiring stories and introspective challenges.

As I read about the Willow Creek Axis group donating hundreds of pairs of shoes to the homeless in Chicago, I wept.

As I read about John Maxwell writing out his "I am what" so "I do what" which results in "what", I was challenged and did the same myself.

Having just read the book, 7 Triggers to Yes, I was inspired to read that, "Leaders keep hope alive... Hope is attitude in action." As 7 Triggers showed that inspiring hope is a powerful trigger used to influence and presuade and isn't that what leaders do.

The book is a quick read (one night for me), but I do believe that the reminders of the principles in The Leadership Challenge are excellent and the inspiration coming from these varied individuals is uplifting. I think you'll enjoy this book.

Editorial Review:

Christian Reflections on The Leadership Challenge gathers together in one place a remarkable collection of leaders who share insights on faith and leadership. Editorial Review:

WE WERE MEANT FOR EACH OTHER.

None of us are fully equipped to excel in life. Our weaknesses, blind spots, limited capabilities, and lack of experience all point to one thing-interdependence. Which is why connecting with others plays such an indispensable role in healthy development. Having access to the wisdom, experience, vision, and direction of those who have gone before can put you years ahead of where you'd be on your own. And, in addition to enhancing you own potential in all of life's growth areas (spiritual, emotional, professional, relational, etc.), the things you'll discover will equip you to help others as well.

So why don't we place more of a priority on developing these essential, empowering relationships? Are we uneasy with the vulnerability, assuming it will be perceived as weakness? Do we hesitate to ask, not wanting to impose on anyone else's busy schedule? Are we reluctant to provide guidance for others, not wanting to come across as proud or self-important? Each of these factors can play a part, of course. But the main reason we miss out, according to Stanley and Clinton, is that we simply don't understand the true nature of mentoring-a problem that is easily overcome.

Good Things Come in Small Packages 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Contrary to what one earlier reviewer said, while I do not personally know Mr. DeMoss, I do not think he drops names for the sake of pride. Rather, I found his comments about his perspective on some famous people to be enlightening.

"The Little Red Book of Wisdom" is around 170 pages and contains 23 chapters on topics that while many of us may be familiar of, it does not hurt to be periodically reminded of the wisdom contained in the chapters. While Mr. DeMoss writes from a Christian perspective, readers of various religious backgrounds will benefit from the book.

Among the points covered in the book include:

1. True freedom is the discipline to stick to doing what you're called to do and saying "no" to everything else.
2. Great leaders are great servants.
3. Good thinking requires time alone and being quiet.
4. Make technology a friend instead of a trap.
5. 4 essential motivators of work.
6. 4 phrases, when used properly, can open up opportunities.
7. Ultimately, everything belongs to God.
8. Dare to honor God with your "firsts" (money, time, etc.) and watch Him bless you!
9. Watch the tendency to talk too much and learn to listen more.
10. It is not wise to travel alone with a member of the opposite sex.
11. Be careful not to sacrifice your family and relationship with God in the process of becoming "successful".
12. Worry is useless, so why do it?

Again, while the book's contents may be common knowledge, we need to be periodically reminded of these insights lest we stumble.

Read, enjoy and be encouraged. Highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

The Little Red Book of Wisdom offers time-tested principles for professional and personal fulfillment. In the book, Mark DeMoss gathers insights for living wisely from history, Scripture, and a lifetime of listening. The result is a handy, accessible book that gives readers a new way to enjoy lasting success in the work world and beyond. Topics include finding and keeping your focus in life, building a winning corporate culture, and setting aside time for good thinking.
