Saints for Today 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Father Martin has given us a personal look at his relationships with the saints included in this collection. For everyone who grew up with the idea that saints were holy-card perfect, this book provides a healthy alternative look at people whom we all might hope to imitate. His approach--to include those holy men and women (some not yet canonized) who play a personal role in his own life--is a helpful way to consider the communion of saints. Highest recommendation.

Editorial Review:

My Life with the Saints is at once James Martin's inspiring memoir of spiritual self-discovery and an homage to the Catholic saints who accompanied him every step of the way. From his lukewarm childhood Catholicism to the executive fast track at General Electric to the Jesuits and a life dedicated to God, Martin looked and prayed to the saints--from St. Peter to Pope John XXIII--to intervene and guide his life. As this witty, confessional, and surprising account unfolds, we see how saints can help us each find our way in the world. Winner of the 2007 Christopher Award and the Catholic Press Award for best spirituality hardcover book of 2007, and named one of Publishers Weekly's 100 Best Books of 2006.

Not for True Believers in God of Abraham Issac & Jacob 1 out of 5 stars.

Occultic - skimmed book looked at references (mostly occult) placed in trash can & delivered to dump! HAD to use up one star to rate it but it is a minus infinity of don't read.

Interesting but not all you'd expect 3 out of 5 stars.

I recently bought the book and i was very excited to look up the names of popular angels, learning new ones, reading about the certain classes and such. The book covers the alphabetical order as it promises, but never clearly breaks down each class to tell you what it consists of, it simply says who certain people believe is in each class and in what order the classes are. To put it bluntly, it classifies angles but doesn't explain the categories and tries to make up for this by giving you classification after classification. What bothered me most about the book is that in the end it gives incantations to "summon angels and make them obbey you", which made me wonder if the whole book is laughable all together. I doubt anyone reading the book was looking to join a cult, and i feel the author lost a start of quality by including such rubbish in a well researched book. Another thing that might surprise you is how it talks about there being 7 or 10 heavens (then citing Dante), but never does the author stop to mention that the christian bible which is widely read and which he claims to have started from, states that there are only 3, that God lives in the 3rd heaven and that because of it Raphael or Michael can't be the rulers of that heaven.
Aside from this, it still an enjoyable book with an intruduction where the author talks about how he started on this hobby and the general information that he has on them. Great to flip through, but after 2 hours you won't be nearly as interested in it.

Editorial Review:

The result of sixteen years of research in Talmudic, gnostic, cabalistic, apocalyptic, patristic, and legendary texts, the classic reference work on angels is beautifully illustrated and its reissue coincides with the resurgence of belief in angels in America.

Everything you need to know about Angels 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Not ordinarily a Billy Graham reader, but in searching for information about Angels, this book kept coming up. I wanted FACTS not assumptions. I found them here.

I was comforted by the knowledge that I gained from this book. He points out Biblical facts in ways that I never looked at them before. A lot of the angel information is skimmed over, but he has really disected it and presents it in a layperson way.

I originally bought this book as a gift for a friend, but ended up purchasing an additional one for myself to have around the house in time of need.

Excellent 5 out of 5 stars.

This is probably the best book I have ever read about Angels. I strongly recommend everyone to read this book.

The book contains 15 chapters about Angels! These are not 15 chapters about Graham's thoughts on Angels, they are 15 chapters about what the Bible says about Angels. Graham adds stories and illustrations from his life and ministry to further demonstrate his point.

The book evaluates and answers questions such as:

Are they visible or invisible?
How are they different from people?
What do they do?
Are they for real?
Are they still around today?

While I cannot say for certain if I have ever seen an Angel, I believe in them because of the same reason Graham does. "I believe in angels because the Bible says there are angels; and I believe the Bible to be the true Word of God." (page 27)

Another interesting chapter was #13: Angels and Death. Believers in Christ do not need to fear death, however, it is natural for man to be afraid of the unknown. I think it is fair to say most people are a little nervous or apprehensive about death. It is comforting to know that Angels will be there to escort me to Heaven after my final breath. Those Angels that have been with me my entire life, will be there to take me to the Creator. That indeed is comforting to know.

I found this book very interesting and easy to read. This is the type of book that once you start reading, it is difficult to put down. However, you really should pause after each chapter to reflect on what Graham wrote.

Again, I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Editorial Review:

Relating his personal experiences, Graham helps to call a world in crisis to faith.

a brutal reality check 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book is bone-chilling. I believe every word of it. Scripture says in 1 Peter 5:8: "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walketh about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour". If we could only get a mere passing glimpse of how desperately satan and his fallen angels hate our guts, we would see our surroundings through different eyes. Jesus did not die for the fallen angels, and they are jealous beyond description. They passionately hate God and want to take as many of us away from Him as possible. Get this book; digest this book. You will wake up to a different reality than you had the day before you read it.

Editorial Review:

For seventeen years, Elaine served her master, Satan, with total commitment. Then she met Dr. Rebecca Brown, who served her master, Jesus Christ, with equal commitment. Elaine, one of the top witches in the U.S., clashed with Dr. Brown, who stood against her alone. In the titanic life-and-death struggle that followed, Dr. Brown nearly lost her life. Elaine, finding a power and love greater than anything Satan could give her, left Satan and totally committed her life to Jesus Christ. In this honest, in-depth account of Satan's activities today, you'll see how to recognize and combat the many satanists who regularly infiltrate and destroy Christian churches; recognize and combat satanic attacks; and recognize those serving Satan, and bring them to Jesus Christ.

Okay for the New Believer 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Not what I expected. This is mostly an extended, but lightweight, exposition on Ephesians 6:13-15, complete with "personal application" sections, checklists, and questions. It would probably be a good study for beginning believers, but not for someone who's deeper into study, or further along their walk. There are a lot of "unfinished stories" here--"The person walked down the aisle, cursing God and I..." .... "Later, I learned from members of the congregation..." .... "I learned from some of the other pastors...." There's little personal experience that isn't solved by simply memorizing and quoting some verses. The personal experiences are always something the author heard from someone else after the fact.

Editorial Review:

Some Christians believe strongly in the existence of demons and spiritual warfare. Others downplay or even ignore the idea. With such divergent views, how are Christians supposed to know the truth about demonic forces at work in this world? The Invisible War examines what every believer needs to know about Satan, demons, and spiritual warfare, offering a balanced look at this controversial subject. This provocative book will help Christians understand what the Bible says about these threats and will show them how they can safeguard themselves and their families through prayer. Now available in trade paper, The Invisible War offers a balanced look at what is going on in the spiritual realm and what believers can do to defend themselves.

Very Good 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed this book. The author uses scripture references to describe the spiritual battles behind Jezebel, Athaliah, and Delilah. Exposing these demonic influences will enable the believer to effectively engage in spiritual warfare against the enemy with the Word of God as his or her sword. The devil hates light that exposes darkness and ignorance is one of the greatest weapons against the body of Christ. This is a book that I will treasure and refer to again in years to come. A must for any Christian library.

Editorial Review:

God has a divine plan to release his people from the curse of desolation and barrenness. Satan also has a strategy, however, which is to lock us to our past. He uses a threefold cord of the demonic spirits of Jezebel, Athaliah, and Delilah--strongholds that seek to destroy not only us but also generations to follow--to block us from victorious Christian living. But by exposing the plans of the enemy, God's people can be released from barrenness and launched into expansion, growth, and multiplication. Sandie Freed takes readers through a close study of each of these demonic forces in order to prepare them to break the threefold demonic cord. Conducting a biblical exploration of the everyday tactics of each spirit, Freed lays bare their strategies and helps readers defeat them through prayer.

A highly respected journalist reports on angel encounters. 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

What sets Joan Wester Anderson's book apart from so many others with the word "angel" in their titles is her journalistic discipline. At the heart of each of her "In The Arms Of Angels" narratives is the diligent research and scrupulous fact checking that is Wester-Anderson's literary signature. It's little wonder that the last person to be rescued from the horrors of being buried alive at the World Trade Center on 9/11, chose this New York Times best-selling author to tell her near-death angel story. No one delivers a compelling, credible read on heavenly beings like Joan Wester Anderson. No one.

Editorial Review:

New York Times best-selling author Joan Wester Anderson offers us her latest collection of true-life accounts of guardian angels and heavenly intervention.

Extraordinary stories of angelic appearances in the lives of ordinary people abound. Author Joan Wester Anderson brings together some of the most compelling true stories from the past five years in her latest collection, In the Arms of Angels. Whether they center on seemingly mundane events or national tragedies, the stories in this book reveal that angels accompany humans on their daily journeys and influence their lives.

Editorial Review:

John Milton was a 17th century poet famed for his two epic poems Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained. Milton came under scrutiny for his radical political views and his heretical religious beliefs. T S Eliot in particular wrote against Milton. Milton writes in Paradise Regained about Jesus' temptation in the wilderness. He speaks of his hunger both spiritually and physically. Satan is seen with the fallen angels plotting on how to conquer Jesus. An excerpt reads as follows. "Think not so slight of glory, therein least Resembling thy great Father. He seeks glory, And for his glory all things made, all things Orders and governs; nor content in Heaven, By all his Angels glorified, requires Glory from men, from all men, good or bad, Wise or unwise, no difference, no exemption. Above all sacrifice, or hallowed gift, Glory he requires, and glory he receives, Promiscuous from all nations, Jew, or Greek,Or Barbarous, nor exception hath declared; From us, his foes pronounced, glory he exacts."
