Editorial Review:

This classic of Christian testimony and devotion explores the attributes of God in words that fly straight to the heart. A superb aid to strengthening and deepening the spiritual life, each chapter begins with a prayer, lucidly discusses a divine aspect -- from God's infinity to God's love -- and relates that aspect to today's world, while pointing always to God's wonder and inscrutability.A. W. Tozer asserts that the cause of many of our modern spiritual woes is the loss in today's church of a lofty concept of God. He argues persuasively that the cure lies in our rediscovery of God's majesty. "What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us," he writes. "The history of mankind will probably show that no people has ever risen above its religion, and man's spiritual history will positively demonstrate that no religion has ever been greater than its idea of God." The Knowledge of the Holy bearseloquent witness to the concept of God's majesty, encourages reverent meditation on the being of God, and offers a way to bring back spiritual power to our lives.

great way to explain and teach about God 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

What is God is a beautiful book teaching about all beliefs in a non-judgmental and informative book. This worked well for us to teach our kids about all religions while leaving it open for them to decide what they believe.

poor syntax & too broad 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The 3 stars is for effort - I love that someone attempted to write this book for children, giving an overview of many different religious traditions and that they're all good, and that God is whatever you believe it to be. The problem, besides poor grammatical structure that makes the story difficult to follow (was this edited at all?), is that rather than just sticking to religions and including earth-based / pagan beliefs as one of those, the author goes off on her theory as if it is the truth. She doesn't seem to see that her God (everyone & everything) is also just another belief system like the others. I was disappointed & won't be giving the book as a gift like I had planned, but may attempt to write my own -- it is a much needed book!

Editorial Review:

The depth of meaning here defies easy description. Through Boritzer's clear text and Marantz's vivid and humorous illustrations, the reader does, in fact, receive an answer to the question, What is God? Full-color illustrations.

Getting to know the 3rd person of the Trinity 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Essentially the main point is that the Holy Spirit is a person, not merely some ethereal force. There are in fact many Bible verses to support this and I found this book of great help in my Christian walk - though I don't believe that it should fully substitute for learning the Doctrine of the Holy Spirit.

I would recommend it

Godbless!

Rich, Rewarding, and Convicting 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the great devotional Christian classics of the 18th century, but it still packs a mighty punch today. It began its life as a series of sermons preached by Edwards to his Northampton congregation in 1742 and 1743, and was first published in 1746. Edwards discusses the place of religious fervor and feelings in the Christian life. For those who prefer a more staid and serene Christian existence, Edwards discusses the prevalence of such scripturally based affections as love, joy, desire, compassion, and zeal. He concludes this opening section by asking how can people sit and hear about "the unparalleled love of the innocent, and holy, and tender Lamb of God, manifested in His dying agonies, His bloody sweat, His loud and bitter cries, and bleeding heart, and all this for enemies, to redeem them from deserved eternal burnings, and to bring to unspeakable and everlasting joy and glory, - and yet be cold and heavy, insensible and regardless! Where are the excesses of our affections proper, if not here?"

After this stirring salvo, Edwards then addresses those who have gone overboard in emphasizing emotional experiences by giving 12 false signs which are thought by many to be indicative of someone who is experiencing true religious affections from God. Many people trust in the depthness of their emotions, the zeal for doing churchwork, the experiences they have had when a scripture verse came to mind, the appearance of love in a person's life, etc, but these things in and of themselves are not conclusive proof of God's divine grace.

Then in the body of the book, Edwards discusses 12 clear signs that God is at work in the life, and the chief sign is that there is a greater appreciation and love for God for who He is and not primarily for what you can get from Him.

Another sign that you are expression truly divine religious affections is that you continue to live for Christ every day. If you have one or two days in church where you feel genuinely inspired and then go back to living a life of sin, then you have not experienced a genuine awakening from God, because when God awakens you, you will be changed forever. Everything you do in life will be motivated by a selfless love for God and for His divine qualities and a selfless love for others.

This book was a shattering read for me because I have often looked upon the religious experiences in my life as proof that I was 'in the Lord,' or proof that I was walking with the Lord, when in actuality, a changed life is the proof.

I should also say that the book is a bit wordy. Many sentences are almost a whole paragraph long. You really have to concentrate to get the main idea in certain portions of the book. The reader not used to 18th century writing might have to adjust to these long and sometimes meandering sections.

But you will be greatly rewarded if you give this book the time and study that it deserves.

Editorial Review:

In the wake of the Toronto Blessing and other revival movements, Christians need this book more than ever. Edwards, the central figure in New England's first Great Awakening, offers his most detailed description of the signs--false and true--of religious revival, while high-lighting the role truly balanced emotions play within the Christian life.

The Bible you can understand 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This translation of the Bible has been incredibly useful to me. I bought it to read Job after hearing a wonderful sermon one Sunday. Now I bring it with me to church every time I go. The Message is an up-to-date version of the Bible, written to help the reader understand the many message given by Scripture. I have found it helpful in understanding sermons, in helping with my own Bible study, and in regular prayer. I highly recommend it!

Editorial Review:

God’s Word was meant to be read. But more than that, it was meant to be understood. It was first written in the language of the people––of fishermen, shopkeepers, and carpenters. The Message Remix gets back to that: You can read it and understand it.

In The Message Remix, there are new verse-numbered paragraphs that will help you study and find favorite passages. Or, you can just read it like a book and let the narrative speak to you. After all, it is God’s story, with its heroes and villains, conflicts and resolutions. Either way, it’s God’s Word––the Truth––in a user-friendly form.

Plaguerism at its worst 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Kenneth Hagin says its a problem that weve preached a cross religion and not a throne religion. He goes so far as to call the cross a place of defeat. How far this is from Jesus' teachings, unless we take up our cross and follw Him we are not worthy of Him, thats all Jesus preached was the cross, it was central to his teachings and His life, as well as the apostle Paul. Its already a proven fact anyway that Kenneth Hagin plaguerized this entire book from The Authority of the Believer by John A. MacMillan. One need only read both books and realize he changed little else but the title. The places in the book where the plageurism is not word for word its thought for thought. The only thing thats original about his version are his made up dreams and visitations he claims to have had from his gnostic Jesus. I wish I had more hands, Id give this book 4 thumbs down.

Editorial Review:

"A few of us have barely gotten to the edge of that authoriity, but before Jesus comes again, there's going to be a whole company of believers who will rise up and with the authority that is theirs, ...and they will do the work that God intended they should do.

Fullness, Balance, and Challenge 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

As if attending a crusade event in person, the reader will find the always compassionate, passionate, and caring Billy Graham pleading for unbelievers to believe, believers to come to the fullness promised to them as children of God, and for those needing clarity on this important subject to hit THE BOOK and discover through the Holy Spirit what they need. As I read, I kept thinking, "I miss Dr. Graham." Then, I turned on the TV and one of his "classic" crusade presentations was on a religious channel. You sometimes forget what a great teacher, preacher, evangelist and pastor he was.

GREAT, GREAT book that will bless, challenge, and inspire you to reach higher in your walk with the Lord.

really enlightening 5 out of 5 stars.

Eye opening beginning... 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Nee classifies the spirit as the Inner Man, the soul as the Outer Man and the body as the Outermost Man. The spirit is God's dwelling place. Our human nature, good or bad is in our soul. The goal is to have the spirit govern the soul. The soul must be broken, won and mastered by the spirit.

Some Scripture he cites:
Luke 21:19
In your patience ye shall win your souls.

1 Peter 1:22
Seeing ye have purified your souls in your obedience to the truth unto unfeigned love of the brethren, love one another from the heart fervently:

1 Peter 1:9
receiving the end of your faith, [even] the salvation of [your] souls.

Romans 7:22
For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

Ephesians 3:16
that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that ye may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man;

2 Corinthians 416
Wherefore we faint not; but though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day.
(I always rightly or wrongly thought the outward man is the body, but he is referring to the human nature decaying as the spirit is strengthened.)
All The American Standard Version which he uses.

Later on he takes some liberty in translating a couple verses in Hebrews.

The beginning was somewhat eye opening and I was looking forward to the book.

However the book is repetitive to an extreme. He constantly reiterates how the outward man must be broken for the spirit to be able to work in various ways.

He also believes there is a point where there is a sudden breaking and then the spirit is free as long as we abide by the Spirit. This is reminiscent of a "second anointing" and also reminds me of books like Absolute Surrender by Murray (I know that will offend a lot of people) and others. Although Nee says that it can be a sudden break followed by a gradual one or gradual followed by sudden, on pg 73 he says the problem can be solved. I would prefer to think of this as a life-long process with the spiritual battle going on constantly.

Although God uses everything for the good (Romans 8:28) I'm not sure I subscribe to the theory that God Himself directly sends every calamity our way as he says.

This is the first book by Nee that I have read. I learned some things but thought these concepts could be explained more succinctly. Despite this I'm looking forward to reading his three most popular works.

Editorial Review:

Surely this is the hour when the battleground is in the soul. While the Lord is seeking to work through the quickened spirit. Satan is seeking to work throught the natural, soulish life which has not been brought under control of the spriit.

Editorial Review:

In four superb homilies and a concluding essay, Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, provides a clear and inspiring exploration of the Genesis creation narratives.

While the stories of the world’s creation and the fall of humankind have often been subjected to reductionism of one sort or another — literalists treat the Bible as a science textbook whereas rationalists divorce God from creation — Ratzinger presents a rich Catholic understanding of these early biblical writings and attests to their enduring vitality.

Beginning each homily with a text selected from the first three chapters of Genesis, Ratzinger discusses, in turn, God the creator, the meaning of the biblical creation accounts, the creation of human beings, and sin and salvation; in the appendix he unpacks the beneficial consequences of faith in creation.

Expertly translated from German, these reflections set out a reasonable and biblical approach to creation. ‘In the Beginning . . .’ also serves as an excellent homiletic resource for priests and pastors.

this book is excellent, Charles Stanley has always been a favorite of mine, He has always delivered sound doctrine and his teachings are excellent, I'd highly recommend this book for everyone who is a believer in Jesus Christ and trying to grow spiritually.

Editorial Review:

As young believers we often begin our walk with Christ energetically and ready to "take on the world." But somewhere along the way, we find ourselves faltering. Why? Because we stop relying on the Holy Spirit to guide us and protect us from temptation.

Charles Stanley reminds us that the Holy Spirit is the promise from the Father for all believers. By illuminating who He is, how we receive Him, and what He can do in our lives, Stanley removes much of the mystery surrounding the Holy Spirit, and offers new hope to believers who have long been perplexed by this member of the Trinity.
