Tremendous 5 out of 5 stars.

This was a wonderful book. I am very thankful to both Fr. Jim Link and Fr. Paul Quinon for recommending it to me. I must admit that I did not get it all, but much of the Celtic Spirituality presented touched my spirit, my mind, my intellect and my soul.

It is a book about the Celtic worldview and way of life. It has made me even more homesick for the land of the Celts; it aroused a desire to return to Ireland or Scotland. Yet I realized that I would need to learn to live the Celtic way/mode here before I could even consider going back across the pond.

The book made me realize how much I needed to simplify my life, and prompted me to take a semester off school to help establish a new pattern of living and of being. It prompted me to reestablish a stronger pattern of work, bible study, prayer, reading and pursuing God and his will above all else, to try to live each day to the full, to live to be a good and true friend, and to learn to be better at being.

As an aside there are two more books by O'Donohue that follow the same spirit: Eternal Echoes and To Bless the Space Between Us both of which I attempted to read on a number of occasions but was unable to make it through. One of his books of poetry Conamara Blues - I ended up reading a number of times.

Editorial Review:

Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom offers an exploration of the secret universe we all carry inside us, the connections we forge with the worlds of our friends and loved ones, and the products of our worlds reflected in the things we create outside of ourselves. Anam Cara, Gaelic for "soul friend," is an ancient journey down a nearly forgotten path of wisdom into what it means to be human. Drawing on this age-old perspective, John O'Donohue helps us to see ourselves as the Celts did: we're more than just flesh, blood, and bone; we comprise individual worlds. The comprehension of the sublime architecture of the worlds we are born with will engender a new appreciation for the outside world and the way we contribute to its evolution.

Editorial Review:

More than a prayer book, Celtic Daily Prayer is a gift from the Northumbria Community of northeastern England. This devout religious community, with members scattered around the world, is joined together by the teachings of traditional Celtic Christianity dating back to the sixth century. In assembling this collection of prayers, they offer Christians ancient Celtic devotional writing as well as contemporary sources of wisdom, such as Anne Morrow Lindbergh, T.S. Eliot, and even Peter Yarrow from Peter, Paul, and Mary. The focal point for this prayer book is the daily office, although the book also includes additional meditations and daily readings. It offers two complete years of reading, so it should last a while (the publisher also promises follow-up books). Although many of these prayers come from the ancient monastic tradition, they easily speak to Christians contending with everyday things like jobs, childcare, dinners, and house cleaning. In his introduction Richard J. Foster (Celebration of Discipline) claims that this prayer book is most often found "in kitchens with bread baking and tea brewing or in living rooms crammed full of that cozy lived-in feel." --Gail Hudson

Editorial Review:

John O'Donohue (Anam Cara), a Celtic poet, scholar, and philosopher with an Irish brogue, speaks to the deepest calling of our soul: the longing to belong. "To be human is to belong," he explains. "Belonging is a circle that embraces everything; if we reject it, we damage our nature. The word 'belonging' holds together the two fundamental aspects of life: Being and Longing, the longing of our Being and the being of our Longing." Although this may sound like an elaborate Celtic circle knot, O'Donohue has nevertheless woven a solid and easy-to-grasp book that speaks to the soul's constant yearning. Every passage is a delight for the senses, as O'Donohue shares his lilting poetic language, his Celtic imagery and stories, and his fireside-chat wisdom. This is a broad-reaching yet highly focused book that dares to explore the realm of legitimate angels, the meaning of suffering, and, most poignantly, how life on earth may never quench the soul's thirst for belonging. --Gail Hudson

Mostly metaphors 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I liked Listening for the Heartbeat of God far better than this work. In Christ of the Celts, Newell makes God to look like what he wants humanity to look like. The metaphorical language quickly becomes laborious, and leads to sentimentalism, in my opinion. It's simply vague metaphor after metaphor until the vision of Christ he creates is far more cloudy than clear. This work is full of abstract ideas and words that the author uses to validate his viewpoints. It's heavy on emotion and wanting for balanced perspective. For example, Newell's criticism of Christianty as influenced by the Roman empire does not give due justice to the many branches and traditions of the Christian faith that have developed since the fourth century (including many of the Protestant descendants of the Reformation) - who take very seriously the call to safeguard truth.
Newell villainizes the impact of the Roman Empire, and though correcting the romanticized view of Western historical influence is important, the author seems to write off centuries of sincere and faithful Christian thinkers, and relegate them to pawns of the power-obsessed Roman ("Western") worldview. I'm sorry, but I simply will not buy that the "Christ of the Celts" is diametrically opposed to the Christ of the Apostle Paul, or that Celtic theology is irreconcilable with orthodox Christianity as defended for the last 1500 years - and more to be honest, for the books of the Bible are older than the non-biblical sources Newell cites, and their teachings confirm many of the ideas he tries to dismiss. The book has a pretty cover, though ... but you know what the old saying is about a book and its cover...

Editorial Review:

Christ of the Celts

"I explore the Celtic image of Christ as the Memory of what we have forgotten. He remembers the dance of the universe and the harmony that is deep within all things. He is the Memory also of who we are."
--from the Prelude

"Diagnosing the human soul with a longing for peace in the face of fear and fragmentation nurtured by global political forces and fundamentalisms, Newell offers the ancient traditions of Celtic Christianity as a way forward in healing humankind and the earth."
--Publishers Weekly

"This graceful, wise, and important book is a superb introduction to the treasures of Celtic Christianity for our time."
--Marcus Borg, author, The Heart of Christianity

Disappointed 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I opened this book with hopes but was disappointed. The earlier chapters on Pelagius and Eriugena were interesting. As the argument moved on, though, it seemed Celtic spirituality sounded merely like the progressive theology in the church today. I wondered if calling it "Celtic" was just a way to make it sound more exotic. I also didn't care for how Augustine and Calvin(ism) were treated as the villians of the drama. I'm guessing the matter is more complicated than this.

The theme of approaching God through nature is a valuable one, and I appreciated that aspect of the book. For a better treatment of the contemplation of nature within the context of Christian spirituality, I recommend Diogenes Allen's Spiritual Theology.

Christianity at it's best 5 out of 5 stars.

I have long been drawn to the spiritual philosophy that was Celtic Christianity which believes that mankind is at it's core good and that the spark of God resides in all creation. After reading several good books on the subject I have to say this book was the most accessable to me. A true teacher is able to explain complex subjects in a way that a novice can understand and J. Philip Newell is definitely a true teacher of this subject. For me Christianity as understood by the Celtic mind and soul is by far the most enlightened view of the teachings of Jesus and it's suppression over the centuries has been a great loss to humanity. I only hope that books like these and the stirring in the souls who are drawn to this form of Christianity mark a resurgence of this beautiful, enlightened view of God, Jesus, mankind and the earth.

This is the third year that I have ordered this calendar. The art work is beautiful and the description of each months design is very interesting. The calendar is in twelve month format with decent sized blocks for each day so that I can write in all the chores that need doing.

Editorial Review:

The Celts perceived the presence of divine forces in all aspects of nature. Patterns of harmony and balance, dark and light, winter and summer, female and male, are woven throughout Celtic tradition. Celtic knots and patterning reflect their belief in the continuity of life, the interconnection of all things: plants, animals and otherworldly divinities. The Celtic Mandala 2009 wall calendar presents the magical weavings of Welsh artist Jen Delyth in calendar form. Jen's work is founded in her deep connection to her Celtic heritage. She creates intricate drawings then collages them with her nature photography, further symbolizing the connection to the natural world.

Breath of Hope... from the 5th Century 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am deeply relieved, encouraged and challenged that the "kingdom life" of Christ and the sharing of that life has been done so lovingly, incarnationally, and effectively in the communal spirit of Jesus' own ministry... in a time other than the first century AD. I needed to hear that what I and others are prayerfully working toward has been done before.

We are those who love Christ but no longer fit in the institutional church. We have come to accept no vain substitutions for His kingdom. We have come to want no lesser form of outreach than His own demonstrated love, power, and life-changing presence in the midst of His people among the broken. We are struggling against the dominant culture of western, consumeristic, Christian individualism. So was Saint Patrick... and the results of his unbending devotion to Christ and those He longed to redeem were staggering.

For all Christ-followers already on the postmodern journey of awakening, this book is a dynamic help rooted in both history and humility. It's a powerful reminder that we are not a "revolution" but rather the continuation of generations of others who have imitated Christ's own intentional example on earth in spite of the dominant secular culture.

IONA Celtic prayer book 5 out of 5 stars.

Excellent resource. This is the best book of Celtic prayer that I have ever used.

Deeply spiritual and open 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have other books by this author but this one is my favorite. I love the Celtic prayers. And this is more than just prayers but can be used for devotions at the beginning and end of the day. There are prayers and opportunities to read scriptures and to insert your own prayers of thanksgiving. There is also an invitation to be silent and listen to God.

Just a taste of the real 2 out of 5 stars.

I ordered it because it was to be what it is. Devotional prayers for the week and for daily. Excellent reasource for just that; but if you are thirsty for more of the meat rather than drinking milk, keep looking. More are available and we need to share what we find. If you as I am seeking more indepth before the visit, and you find "share". Good intro for Iona Celtic Prayer.

Editorial Review:

Based on the rhythms and images of Celtic oral tradition, these morning and evening prayers are a week's cycle of daily worship used by the ecumenical community of Iona, the most famous of Celtic shrines. Written in calligraphy.

Editorial Review:

Daily prayers based on the spiritual riches of the ancient Celtic tradition.

This lavishly illustrated daily prayer book draws on the great spiritual insights and wisdom of the Celtic church, offering prayers and Scripture readings for every morning and evening of the week.

Each day Celtic Benediction invites readers to meditate on a different aspect of the creation story from Genesis. On Sunday the theme is light. In the morning, the prayers and readings lead us to seek the light of the life of God in all his creatures. At night, we meditate on the light that no darkness can overcome as we bring the world and its needs to God. And so on through each day of the week: water, the fruitful earth, the animal world, humanity, playful rest, and all that God has made draw us into intimate prayer. Related Scripture readings are also given for each day of the year, making this a book to use constantly.

Illustrated throughout with colored panels from the Lindisfarne Gospels, Celtic Benediction offers contemporary Christians a unique devotional experience to treasure for a lifetime.
