Beautifully done, beautifully written! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is one of my absolute favorites! Not only is the information within EXTREMELY well written, there are many photographs and the artwork is among the best I've ever seen.

There are overviews of the Spring Feasts and the Fall Feasts and an explanation of Jewish Time, broken down into the Jewish Day,Week and Month. There are chapters on The Feasts Of Leviticus 23 (the 7 feasts) as well as Additional Observances.

Each of the Feasts are covered in DETAIL, with wonderful illustrations, charts and artwork.

Even if you never read a word of this book (which would be a shame, because it is so very informative) you will be blown away by the artwork and the photography. There is a two page spread on The Passover Table which shows each item with an explanation, which is worth the price of the book alone!

Each Feast is covered with THE BIBLICAL OBSERVANCE and also the MODERN OBSERVANCE, and each ceremony is explained in interesting, never boring detail. The illustrations and photographs draw you in and you really start to "get it."

I am so thankful I purchased this book. It is one of my favorites and one which I refer to often. It is well worth the price and you won't regret your purchase.

Editorial Review:

Isreal's feasts are infinitely more important than just a series of cultural observances. These feasts are appointed by the Lord, and they are owned by the Lord. He calls them "my feasts." Together they form God's prophetic calendar, outlining the work of history's most important person...Jesus, the Messiah. As such, few themes are more timely or rewarding for God's people today.

The Feasts of the Lord covers all aspects of the biblical feasts...historical background, biblical observance, and prophetic significance. Yet, this book is not just another reference book on the feasts. It is written from the Hebrew Christian viewpoint, helping you to see the feasts through Jewish eyes.

The words of the Savior, His messianic claims, and Bible prophecy will all take on a rich, new relevance for you against the exciting backdrop of The Feasts of the Lord.

Ten Star WOW 5 out of 5 stars.

Where should I start? The photographs are awesome and the directions easy to follow, complete with a well laid out list of items needed for each project. And as someone who like making classy items that I am proud to own or give, I have to say this book is a keeper!

The Rosh Hashanah apple stamp card on pages 20-21 and the decoupaged apple dish on pages 28-29 are ones I loved. As are the Yom Kippur sweet scent sachets on page 48. I grow and dry lavander so this project is and was a keeper.

The hanging flower balls on pages 68-69 are ones I make all year round actually, and they make wonderful gifts. The Chanukah glowing glass menorah on page 90-91 are what I will make this year. As well as the tray on pages 100-101.The sedar plate on pages 168-169 for Pesach/Passover is something I have made and plan on making for a friend.

As for recipes I cannot rave loud enough about the Almond snowballs on page 126-127 or the mini cheesecakes on page 208, and alas the macaroons on page 188 which everyone I know LOVES. These are also a great beginner cookie for kids to learn to make.

The mezuzah project on page 246-247 are so much fun and I have used the idea to create my own style.

Trust me, this is a book that will be used as a reference book for years. By family and friends of all ages.

Such fun! 5 out of 5 stars.

I can hardly wait for Hanukkah this year so I can share this book with family and give it as a gift to friends. Karla Gudeon has been one of my favorite artists for years. Her colorful and whimsical paintings are perfect in this fun book, and Harriet's writing is always a hit with kids. What a perfect combination!

Gorgeous Illustrations! 5 out of 5 stars.

Karla Gudeon's illustrations make this Hanukkah book a work of art. It is a must buy for anyone looking for a Hanukkah book that is out of the ordinary and anyone looking for the perfect holiday gift.

Editorial Review:

Here's a cultural crossover that pays off: a traditionally Japanese poetic form used to celebrate the eight nights of Hanukkah. There's one haiku for each night and stepped pages add one candle to the menorah every time the page is turned. The simple poetry is set off perfectly by Karla Gudeon's vibrant freewheeling artwork. A perfect gift or good to reread each year Hanukkah Haiku is a jubilant unforgettable journey through the eight nights of Hanukkah.

An invaluable source for the most common prayers used in the Jewish faith both Sephardic and Ashkenazic, with distinction and references delineating which is which. Organized in the flow of the daily observances, it is exceedingly simple to follow along and the facing English-Hebrew pages make cross-referencing a snap for those trying to learn the language. I highly recommend this book for both the curious and dedicated.

A 2007 Association of Jewish Libraries Notable Book for Younger Readers 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Books explaining the celebration of Hanukkah abound - who would have thought there was anything new to say to children on this topic? However, Heiligman's excellent book, published by National Geographic as part of the Holidays around the World series, offers a unique perspective. The historical roots of the story are told succinctly, and the rest of the book centers around how the holiday is celebrated. What sets this book apart are the first-rate, full-page photographs that depict Jews celebrating Hanukkah all over the world. In places as far-flung as South Korea, Uganda and Peru, the story of Hanukkah is still alive and still holds meaning. Through the photos, it becomes clear that although these Jews are living in a variety of cultures and countries, they all celebrate the holiday in much the same way.

In addition, unusually thorough end notes supplement the text. Here is a summary of facts, information on how to light a menorah, a simple, yet exacting recipe for making latkes, and complete instructions on how to play dreidel. The bibliography and glossary include valuable resources and definitions, and a world map spotlights the countries where the book's photographs were taken. Finally, there is a wonderfully written afterword about Hanukkah's meaning and message written by Rabbi Shira Stern, who consulted in the writing of the book. Highly recommended for synagogue, school and public libraries. REVIEWED BY NANCY AUSTEIN (Temple Emanu-El, Dallas, TX)

Editorial Review:

In Celebrate Hanukkah Deborah Heiligman welcomes readers to a holiday celebrated by Jewish communities around the world.

The vivid photography of National Geographic illustrates the joyous celebrations of Jewish people around the world—including Ghana, Uganda, India, Israel, Peru, the United States and Poland, as they light menorahs, spin dreidels, and make latkes.

The richly informative back matter details many facts, such as the story of U.S. astronaut Jeffrey Hoffman, who brought a menorah and a dreidel on his Space Shuttle mission in 1993. Hoffman observed the traditional spinning of the dreidel, but wisely left the menorah unlit in the proximity of several thousand liters of rocket fuel! Also included are the author's sure-to-please latke recipe, Hanukkah blessings, and a Hanukkah song.

A note from Rabbi Shira Stern, the book's consultant, sets the holiday in its global religious and cultural context.

Our standard Bar/Bat Mitzvah Gift 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This is our standard Bar and Bat Mitzvah gift, which has come in handy this year since one of our children is at the age where there is a simcha every weekend. It is accessible for the kids at this age, and will offer more as they keep it on the bookshelf for adulthood. The production values are nice, and the whole thing neither looks nor sounds (in tone) "too heavy," though in fact the book is thorough and serious. It also works for recipients of all points along the continuum of observance.

wonderful beautiful 5 out of 5 stars.

this is a wonderful book. I cannot reccoment it enough to add to your collections of books. A must purchase to review the Jewish holidays. With lovable excerts on how to build a Sukkah and other important observations can be found in the text. Historical importance is detailed in each chapter for each holiday. Also present are wonderfulo pieces of artwork and commentaries.

Editorial Review:

Christmas meets Hanukkah for millions of mixed-faith families—who deck their trees with Stars of David and spin the dreidel under mistletoe. Here is a one-of-a-kind, amusingly illustrated and endlessly entertaining guide to the joys—and oys—of celebrating Chrismukkah, the hybrid holiday.

A veritable cornucopia of seasonal delights, this handy (and often hilarious) lifestyle guide walks us through all the Chrismukkah events, history, and lore. You’ll learn about hybrid holiday traditions in decorating (ornaments, wreaths, menorahs, dreidels); innovative tchotchkes (Chrismukkah cards, stockings, lights); and a plethora of menorah options (Godzilla or snowman, anyone?). Plus, the book includes rollicking games to play and songs to sing, along with easy-to-follow recipes for Latkes with Sugar Plum Fairy Sauce, General Saul’s Chicken, Mama Mia Matzah Pizza!, Blitzen’s Blintzes, and other Noel Noshes. Your yuletide happy hours will never be the same once you start mixing a Yule Plotz, Meshugga Nog, or Manishewitz Mulled Wine.

Rounding out the mix are chapters on snazzy holiday hats and caps, interfaith dog and cat gift suggestions, and office-party dos and don’ts. It’s beginning to look a lot like Chrismukkah, and now we’ll all be ready to celebrate with style!

Moving and learned reflection at times 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The reactions to this book are extreme with many people deploring the author's pomposity and self- indulgence and others finding his reflections deep and moving. I read the book with a strong sense of its being a sincere effort to understand how to truly mourn for a parent. I did however sense what one reviewer on Amazon a Mr.Wexler pointed out, that the author says little about who his father really was, shows no great personal connection to him. I too in truth was bothered by the question of making use of a religious rite, or participating in it when one shows an absence of faith in the religion itself. And this raising the real question of what we actually are doing when we are saying Kaddish. If we are not trying to lift up the person's soul, if we do not believe that G-d is truly listening to us then what are we doing?
When I said Kaddish for my father it led me into deeper and deeper connection with the Jewish community , and I would even dare to say brought me closer to G-d. People are different and there is no reason the author of this book should necessarily have gone through a Teshuvah experience in saying Kaddish. But in a way that is what the Tradition truly demands. And that is one aspect of truly honoring and respecting the memory of a parent.
I appreciate the many deep meanings found in the author's explorations but I would have been more positive toward the work had I sensed it was in some way moving toward being a real religious example for others.

Editorial Review:

When Leon Wieseltier's father died, he began the traditional year-long period of mourning, reciting three times a day the prayer known as the mourner's kaddish. Struck by its unexpected power and his lack of knowledge about it, Wieseltier began to study the origin of this ancient ritual. Kaddish records his journey of discovery.

An Israel Haggadah For Passover 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

We have used this Haggadah at our Passover Seder for the past 24 years. Although we have studied several newer publications, we have yet to find another Haggadah that is as poetic, easy to follow, holds children's interest, and is paced as well. In addition, the photographs are lovely!
