I remembered this book from my childhood and ordered it in remembrance of my husband's grandfather whose last name was Ferdinand. It is a beautiful story and the illustrations are a perfect compliment to the text.

i read this story when i was little and always love it but it never made me think as much till i found out my best frind was going to have a baby being a book lover herself and a Liberian she told me right away that she wanted her baby to have as many books as possable but mostlly this one in it's Original hardback form with black and white pictures and i went about finding it for her for the baby shower she got a lots of books that day but i will be one i will never forget the look on her face when she got this one or how i felt or what lesson i rembered learning when i read the book later after i gave it to her so guess we bouth got something from it and one day when her 1 1/2 year old Daughter get's old enough to read it i'm sure the Tradition of what this book teachs to young and old alike will carry on with my Niece and any other like her who read this book because books carry a great power to teach us many things if we are only willing to listen and this is true for any book if we just take the time to stop and read them

The Legend of the Poinsettia 5 out of 5 stars.

I love legends. I always have. I am particularly fond of legends that attempt to explain things such as why the robin has a red breast, or why it snows on Christmas, or why the donkey says "hee haw," and other things like that. That is one of the reasons I was drawn to this little book by Tomie dePaola, The Legend of the Poinsettia.

Lucinda is a young girl who lives with her parents and younger siblings in Mexico. The colorful illustrations have that southeastern feel to it. Lucinda's community is preparing for Christmas by preparing gifts for the Christ child on Christmas Eve. I loved that the focus of gift giving was for Christ as opposed to the hustle and bustle and commercialism that is so common in American households. The gifts were labors of love too and involved special crafts, skills or homegrown gifts. Lucind and her mama have been asked to weave the special blanket for Baby Jesus as the one they have used for years is very old and worn.

When Lucinda's mama becomes ill, Lucinda is unable to finish the blanket by herself and the more she tries, the more tangled the yarn in the loom becomes. Lucinda is disheartened and worried about her mother, as well as saddened that her family has no gift to give the Christ child. Suddenly an old woman appears and suggests Lucinda pick some simple native weeds and bring them to Christ. In humility, Lucinda does that, and as you can guess, these become the beautiful poinsettia plants, the flor de la Nochelbuena, that we associate with Christmas today!

The reference and picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe was a nice touch for Catholic children who are familiar with story, and it was nice to see the shrine to our lady as part of Lucinda's everyday life. My children identified with Lucinda's fears for her mother, and also her fear of being different from the rest of the community. They also felt it was very brave of her to come forward with such a simple gift in the face of much splendor. After reading the story, my kids also became more aware of the poinsettias at church and other places and we even bought our own!

Overall I think this is a very nice book to read during the Advent season in preparation for Christmas, and a nice way for the family to focus on what is most important during this beautiful holiday.

I enjoyed listening to this book as I worked. The writing is descriptive and allows you to lose yourself in the story. After watching the movie, I recommend listening to these unabridged cds. The reader has a wonderful, clear voice that gives life to all the books characters.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl is about Charlie, a generous boy whose family is very poor. Charlie hopes to win admission to Wonka's fabulous chocolate factory which is finally open to five people. I enjoy how Roald Dahl describes imaginary characters and the interesting machines in the factory. At the factory, Charlie meets four other children who have one thing in common: they all represent naughty children in one way or another. The other children can be described as sassy or obsessed or bulging or lazy. They are all extremely unhelpful, and they expect other people to do all the work for them. Charlie is different. He is helpful, and he works hard to make his family happy. I think that there should be a scene that shows Charlie making a good choice in the factory instead of just standing there watching other kids make bad choices. I think that the book is good for readers in second to seventh grades because it is a complicated story with exciting and unpredictable characters. I liked Charlie and the Chocolate Factory so much that I chose to read the sequel!

This story has always been special to me, but this book is great. The pictures are so sweet, perfect for the story. If you like this story you have to have this book.

Grandpa and I purchased this for our (then) 3-year old grandson. We knew that his mom had loved the song as a child herself, but we weren't sure how our little guy would feel about dragons in general or Puff in particular.

He was thrilled with the beautiful artistry of the book and the story that unfolded within. We think his mom may be just as captivated by it. And all of us enjoyed the experience together of playing the CD, singing along, and following along in the book.

Our little guy enjoyed the magic of this set so much he asked to have it put with his "special books" so it will be safe for another day in Honalee.

This is a retelling of a classic folktale about a boy who loses his mitten. As he plays, all sorts of animals squeeze in, until finally they burst out.

One of Brett's strengths is in the detail she crams into every page. For example, in this book the sidebar of every left-hand page shows how the boy, Nicki, accidentally dislodges the next animal to go visit his mitten, and on the right-hand page the sidebar shows that animal running towards the mitten.

Unfortunately, I'm not certain that the level of detail Brett goes into is particularly well-suited for board books. The text is simple enough for a very young child to sit through and understand, but all the same, you might be better off waiting until they're old enough for a real copy of this book. (Especially if a previous commenter is correct and this version is abridged from the original!)

I remember this poem in song form from my childhood. I hadn't thought of it in years, until my grandson told me his teacher had read it to him in his pre-k class. I was delighted to find this book on Amazon.com. I was thrilled to see it's large size, bright colors, crazy pictures, the old lady's stomach expanding to accomodate each new animal. I wasn't bothered (as a child) by the phrase "perhaps she'll die," but I imagine my grandson will enjoy some of the "asides" that rhyme with "die." This book will be a gift to my grandson for his fourth birthday in a few days. I am looking forward to reading it to him! Or should I say, singing it to him!!

I don't remember if there were size dimensions given for this book, but I expected it to be twice the size. I have other books from this author and publisher and they are nice and big and easy for me to use in class. This book is really too small for me to read to my class. I am sadly disappointed.
