Excellent format for a great story to interest your kids 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book as the first pop-up book for my three-year old son and two-year old daughter. I knew it could be a risk, due to the fragile nature of pop-up books, however this one is truly a treat for my children, my wife, myself and everyone else who has seen it!

I'd recommend the book (for self-reading) to older children who know how the fragile the pop-ups can be, but if you read to your kids I recommend this to anyone. It's a classic story which inspires a child's imagination and has an excellent graphical presentation of the story which really captures my children's attention while they're read to.

I only gave this book four of five stars due to the small portions through-out most of the book which actually has the written text. These are also created with mini-pop-ups, but are not incorporated into the whole width and length of the book. Instead the main text of the book is grouped into small 3-4 inch wide pages with small text. Not something you want if you read to your children at bedtime with minimal lighting.

However, don't let this prevent you from buying the book! It is worth the price and has some of the most fantastic pop-ups I've ever seen!

Editorial Review:

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is Robert Sabuda's most amazing creation ever, featuring stunning pop-ups illustrated in John Tenniel's classic style. The text is faithful to Lewis Carroll's original story, and special effects like a Victorian peep show, multifaceted foil, and tactile elements make this a pop-up to read and admire again and again.

A New Classic 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

No other Christmas carol has such a hold on children's imaginations as "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer." (*see note) Even the youngest child understands the joke of this book's title.

When a little dog named Olive hears the lyrics "All of the other reindeer..." she thinks the line is, "Olive, the other reindeer" and concludes that she is in fact, a reindeer, not a dog. Hi-jinks ensue.

This tenth anniversary edition has scratch and sniff gumdrops, flaps to open, levers to pull and a pop-up scene at the end. Reading the "otto-biography" of Seibold on the Chronicle Books site, I learned that the names of his children (and their images) are tucked into the illustrations, shades of Marc Brown and his Arthur books.

Skip the video and enjoy this book. It is a charmer.

Editorial Review:

Olive is merrily preparing for Christmas when suddenly an old holiday favorite--about a certain red-nosed reindeer--takes on new meaning. "Olive the other reindeer?" thinks Olive. "I always thought I was a dog--but I must be a reindeer!" And while Santa and his reindeer are a bit surprised that a dog wants to join the reindeer team, in the end, Olive and her unusual skills are just what Santa needs. Full color.

A little ackward 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I really feel like the odd one out, but I wasn't too impressed with this book. Sure, the illustrations are gorgeous...By no means am I knocking Ms. Brett's skill here, but I just find the text a little long winded and ackward. Maybe it's the way I'm reading it...? It just doesn't seem too terribly well-written to me.

Editorial Review:

Remember how the Gingerbread Boy is eaten by the fox? Well, not this Gingerbread Baby in a delicious twist to a favorite old tale.

It all begins when Matti opens the oven too soon and out jumps a cheeky little Gingerbread Baby. He leads Matti's mother and father, the dog and the cat, and a whole colorful cast of characters on a rollicking chase through the village and into the forest, staying just out of reach, daring them to catch him all along the way.

But Matti's not with them. He's at home in the borders making what turns out to be a gingerbread house into which the Gingerbread Baby runs. Only Matti knows he is safely inside. And readers will too when they look under the lift-the-flap gingerbread house at the end of the story, and there he is!

Death of a Steam Shovel 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Mr. Michael Mulligan and his faithful steam shovel, lovingly called Mary Anne, are working class heroes, fighting to retain their independence in the face of corporate technological prowess in the construction industry. Can outmoded steam power compete with the awesome strength of diesel? Conveniently, this book features paper (not plastic) pages, so your tot can decimate the images of the vile diesel shovels with all the rage that his or her small hands can muster. Don't' be upset about this, it's nothing a roll of clear packing tape can't fix.

Much like the story of Casey Jones, vindication of our heroes will require their demise. Tasked with one final job, the digging of the basement for a fancy town hall, Mike and Mary Anne find themselves trapped by the tremendous success of their labor. Unable to get out of the hole, Mary Anne is broken down to be made into a boiler for the new building, and Mike becomes the janitor. This is no happy ending. No longer are Mike and Mary Anne independent contractors, free to come and go as they please. Mary Anne's steam-powered feet have been bound, like a disobedient concubine. And Mike has become a low-ranking servant of the state, forever forced to feed coal into the mutilated form that was one his industrial lover. The life lesson here is that it doesn't matter if you are honest and hard-working. In fact, those are disadvantages. The only winners are the diesel shovels, destroying without remorse.

Good for tykes who like to play with blocks and toy trucks. Might as well let them know what they're in for.

Editorial Review:

A modern classic that no child should miss. Since it was first published in 1939, Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel has delighted generations of children. Mike and his trusty steam shovel, Mary Anne, dig deep canals for boats to travel through, cut mountain passes for trains, and hollow out cellars for city skyscrapers -- the very symbol of industrial America. But with progress come new machines, and soon the inseparable duo are out of work. Mike believes that Mary Anne can dig as much in a day as one hundred men can dig in a week, and the two have one last chance to prove it and save Mary Anne from the scrap heap. What happens next in the small town of Popperville is a testament to their friendship, and to old-fashioned hard work and ingenuity.

Editorial Review:

Tucker is a streetwise city mouse. He thought he’d seen it all. But he’s never met a cricket before, which really isn’t surprising, because, along with his friend Harry Cat, Tucker lives in the very heart of New York City—the Times Square subway station. Chester Cricket never intended to leave his Connecticut meadow. He’d be there still if he hadn’t followed the entrancing aroma of liverwurst right into someone’s picnic basket. Now, like any tourist in the city, he wants to look around. And he could not have found two better guides—and friends—than Tucker and Harry. The trio have many adventures—from taking in the sights and sounds of Broadway to escaping a smoky fire.
Chester makes a third friend, too. It is a boy, Mario, who rescues Chester from a dusty corner of the subway station and brings him to live in the safety of his parents’ newsstand. He hopes at first to keep Chester as a pet, but Mario soon understands that the cricket is more than that. Because Chester has a hidden talent and no one—not even Chester himself—realizes that the little country cricket may just be able to teach even the toughest New Yorkers a thing or two.

Imaginative retake on an old story! Fabulous illustrations! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book for the youngest readers! Your little ones will delight in the Gingerbread Cowboy's chase across the barren lands of the Old West as he runs to save his life. Many animals are after him but he manages to outwit them all, even the clever old coyote, with the help of the rancher's wife.

Kids will laugh when they hear the Gingerbread Cowboy chant, " ... You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man." They will certainly enjoy the colorful illustrations of the animals depicted against the contrasting, muted background of the Old West desert and mountains.

Hazel Rochman, BOOKLIST reviewer, describes this story best (see Editorial Reviews above): " ... universal trickster tale with a cowboy slant."

Editorial Review:

"Giddyup, giddyup as fast as you can. You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!"

The Gingerbread Cowboy can run from the rancher, he can dash past the javelinas, and he can giddyup right by the cattle grazing on the mesa. But what happens when he meets a coyote sleeping in the sun?

Janet Squires and Holly Berry retell this classic tale with a Wild Western flair, filled with rodeo-romping fun.

This was a great find for my grandchildren that we have temporary custody of. I love sitting in the rocking chair with my 2 1/2 - year old Sarah and cuddling up with these wonderful stories! This is a great quality book, and the illustrations are wonderful! It will get a lot of use, and look beautiful for years to come. Don't pass this one up. It's great for creating memories with your children and grandchildren.

Enchanting 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is so different than the average children stories! My 4year old loves it, mostly for the illustrations, I love it for the language used. The descriptions are wonderful, if only I could speak or write this way. It exposes us both to great timeless stories.

Editorial Review:

This complete and unabridged collection contains all 23 of Beatrix Potter’s Tales in one deluxe volume with all their original illustrations. The stories are arranged in the order in which they were first published so they may be read in their proper sequence. A special section at the end of this volume contains four additional works by Beatrix Potter that were not published during her lifetime. Beautifully reissued with a newly designed slipcase and jacket—a truly stunning gift.

My Old Befana Book 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 5 people found this review helpful.

My children in my preschool class was so excited to read about "Old Befana" during our study of Italian Christmas, however, when reading the book it was the quality dissappointed me.
The spine of the book was bound so tight is was hard to open, it cracked, and was hard to hold open during oral reading. If I had time before out school's culture presentation, I believe I would have returned it. In the past I have always received good quality maybe this was good qaulity but bound too tight. Thanks for the opportunity for my review.

Great book, love DePaola's stuff. The book reads in just 5 or so minutes. I bought it for my daughter so she understands why we celebrate the Ephipany every year. It is a fun Italian tradition and makes the Christmas season last just a little longer!

Editorial Review:

This is a delightful reading of the favorite Italian Christmas story about an eccentric old woman and her never-ending search for the Baby King.

Fairyopolis Review 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Fairyopolis: A Flower Fairie's Journal is magic! I started to browse through the book on a rainy, Sunday afternoon as I sat on my girlfriend's over-stuffed chair, in front of her fireplace, which wasn't lit, because the nip in the air wasn't nippy enough yet. I just turned 60... a time in life when everything makes sense, and nothing makes sense. Why should it? The more I read, the more I was entranced and swallowed up in the story. There were fairies dancing around me everywhere! I became a child with wide-opened eyes and an imagination that I couldn't control. I didn't want to control..... I was having too much fun reading tiny messages, and even feeling the sample of a delicate fairy wing that was tucked into an envelope. Fortunately, my girlfriend left me in quiet illusion to finish the book before she brought me to her garden. We sat quietly and waited. It wasn't long before a twinkle under a leaf, a rustle behind a tree, and soft, lilty giggles let us know that we were not alone. You see, fairies are joyously inquisitive, and if they know that you can see them, they will frollick about and even brush your cheek as they fly by. I also, have gardens with lots of flowers at my house, and a day doesn't pass where I don't primp, keeping the fairy enticement flowing. Yes, I'm 60, and I do believe in fairies! Don't you?

Editorial Review:

Do you believe in fairies? Protected and hidden by a society of Fairy lovers for over 80 years the secret fairy journal of Cicely Mary Barker is available for the first time ever to the public. Learn what really happened during that magical Summer of 1920 when Cicely Mary Barker discovered the secret world of the Flower Fairies.
