Editorial Review:

In the rush of modern life, we tend to lose touch with the peace that is available in each moment. World-renowned Zen master, spiritual leader, and author Thich Nhat Hanh shows us how to make positive use of the very situations that usually pressure and antagonize us. For him a ringing telephone can be a signal to call us back to our true selves. Dirty dishes, red lights, and traffic jams are spiritual friends on the path to "mindfulness"—the process of keeping our consciousness alive to our present experience and reality. The most profound satisfactions, the deepest feelings of joy and completeness lie as close at hand as our next aware breath and the smile we can form right now.

Lucidly and beautifully written, Peace Is Every Step contains commentaries and meditations, personal anecdotes and stories from Nhat Hanh's experiences as a peace activist, teacher, and community leader. It begins where the reader already is—in the kitchen, office, driving a car, walking a part—and shows how deep meditative presence is available now. Nhat Hanh provides exercises to increase our awareness of our own body and mind through conscious breathing, which can bring immediate joy and peace. Nhat Hanh also shows how to be aware of relationships with others and of the world around us, its beauty and also its pollution and injustices. the deceptively simple practices of Peace Is Every Step encourage the reader to work for peace in the world as he or she continues to work on sustaining inner peace by turning the "mindless" into the mindFUL.

"One of the best available introductions to the wisdom and beauty of meditational practice." -Time Written by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, who was nominated by Martin Luther King, Jr. for the 1967 Nobel Peace Prize, this audio offers a guide to becoming more aware of ourselves in an increasingly stressful environment. The Eastern emphasis on maintaining self-awareness has become more and more appealing as an antidote to the ravages of our stressful world, and Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh's manual on mediation is the ideal introduction and life-long guidebook to exploring our inner selves. His spiritual teachings use familiar objects and situations- such as washing the dishes, answering the phone and drinking tea - to give us a practical framework on which to build and maintain a more healthful, relaxed, and harmonious outlook. Tape one explores Thich Nhat Hanh's philosophy of mindfulness. Tape two consists of his mediations, which will help the listener to practice concentration and relaxation. Thich Nhat Hanh, poet, Zen master, and chairman of the Vietnamese Buddhist Peace Delegation during the Vietnam War, was nominated by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., for the Nobel Peace Prize. The author of A Guide to Walking Mediation and Being Peace, among other books, Thich Nhat Hanh now lives in exile in France. The audiobook is read by Peter Thomas, who is a distinguished and versatile narrator.

I have recommended and/or given this book to many, many friends over the years since I first read it. I give it with a caveat: You must have a soft heart toward the Lord and a listening ear for what He will tell you as you read it. It is like no other book as it tells the allegorical tale of Much Afraid and her special traveling companions as she is lead to escape the dismal, loathsome valley she was born to. She encounters many trials and tribulations on her transforming journey -- but Help is ever present, even in the darkest times . . . and the end of the book -- a new beginning. Highly recommend this book!

Editorial Review:

Hannah Hurnard created the story of Much Afraid, a young girl hoping to travel from the Valley of Humiliation to the High Places. Along the way, she meets a number of memorable characters - including the Family of Fearings, Cousin Pride, Mrs. Valiant, Mercy, and Peace. Much Afraid also meets the ever-caring Shepherd, who helps her on her journey, at the end of which she receives a new name: Grace and Glory. This long-time best-seller is an intriguing perspective on the Christian life. Now in a deluxe collectors edition, this unabridged classic will thrill readers of all ages.

A Great Intro to Buddhism 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

"The Heart of Buddha's Teaching" is one of the best books I've read. It's a great introduction to the basic principals and ideas of Buddhism. Thich Nhat Hanh really explained things in such a way that I feel I'm walking away with ideas and resources to help deal with everyday problems.

I'm tempted to call this a self-help book with how every chapter seemed to address things that I as a person am confronted with and am trying to understand. How Hanh applies Buddha's teaching to suffering, anger and how to achieve peace and zen is something I believe everyone needs and will benefit from reading. I've read other books that felt as if they were speaking of things beyond my grasp and ability to make sense of; this was not that book. Everything flowed nicely, the concepts were presented in terms that weren't too complicated, the examples given were ones that did not distract from the ideas and points.

Definitely a must read and worth your time and attention.

Editorial Review:

In The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching, Thich Nhat Hanh introduces us to the core teachings of Buddhism and shows us that the Buddha's teachings are accessible and applicable to our daily lives. With poetry and clarity, Nhat Hanh imparts comforting wisdom about the nature of suffering and its role in creating compassion, love, and joy--all qualities of enlightenment. Covering such significant teachings as the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, the Three Doors of Liberation, the Three Dharma Seals, and the Seven Factors of Awakening, The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching is a radiant beacon on Buddhist thought for the initiated and uninitiated alike.

An Onion Layer Pealer 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I just finished reading Thich Nhat Hanh's "True Love: A Practice for Awakening the Heart." This little 100 page meditation simply changed my perspective on many things.

Talking about a powerful read on how to show and demonstrate love in your life. It all comes back to mindful presence, being there, not just in body, but in full absolute awareness. A true demonstration of love is not monetary or even a gesture but the action of being truly present.

The book really helped me see things differently. If my soul was a gorgeous red onion, and the sweet, yet spicy heart was my true essence, then True Love peeled away a couple of layers to help me see things better. And it put the way I care for others into a perspective, some of which I really didn't want to see. I think the book made me a better person.

There many fantastic meditations, which get your mind to calm itself and focus on true love. It focuses on making oneself loving in your actions towards wife/husband, etc., rather than other-centric love. Though Buddhist at its heart, one of the things that makes Hanh so accessible is his ability to tie his meditation and theory back to Christian theology. In essence, he knows his reader is Western and caters to us.

The book begins with the four aspects of love, which Hanh describes as:
1) Maitri: Loving kindness
2) Karuna: Sympathy, or the ability to ease others pain
3) Mudita: Joyful loving
4) Upeksha: Freedom through love

Really, quite a good book if spirituality and/or matters of the heart are important to you.

Editorial Review:

In this little treasure, Thich Nhat Hanh, the renowned Zen monk, offers timeless insight into the nature of real love. With simplicity, warmth, and directness, he explores the four key aspects of love as described in the Buddhist tradition: lovingkindness, compassion, joy, and freedom—explaining how to experience them in our day-to-day lives. He also emphasizes that in order to love in a real way, we must first learn how to be fully present in our lives, and he offers simple techniques from the Buddhist tradition that anyone can use to establish the conditions of love.

Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk, is an internationally known author, poet, scholar, and peace activist who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Martin Luther King Jr.

Editorial Review:

It was under the Bodhi tree in India 2,500 years ago that the Buddha achieved the insight that just three states of mind were the source of all our unhappiness: ignorance, obsessive desire, and anger. Each of these are equally difficult, but in one instant of anger, lives can be ruined and our spiritual development can be destroyed.

Twenty-five centuries after the Buddha's insight, medical science tells us that he was right. Anger can also ruin our health. It is one of the most powerful emotions, and one of the most difficult to deal with.

But it can be dealt with, and it can be overcome. anger offers us a fresh perspective on taking care of our anger, suggesting we take care of it as we would a crying baby -- touching it, talking quietly to it, probing for what's making it cry.

Filled with stories, techniques, and practical advice, Anger offers a wise and loving way to transform anger into peace, and bring harmony and healing to all the areas and relationships in our lives that have been affected by it. As the Dalai Lama says, Thich Nhat Hahn "shows us the connection between personal, inner peace and peace on earth."

the Sabbath 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This is a thoughtfully written reflection on the meaning of the Sabbath that is appropriate for both Christians and Jews. The book is wonderful for spiritual reading and reflection. It adds depth and meaning to our worship and praise of God. Written by a deeply spiritual man the Sabbath is a great resouce for anyone who wants to deepen and expand their relationship with God.

Editorial Review:

Elegant, passionate, and filled with the love of God's creation, Abraham Joshua Heschel's The Sabbath has been hailed as a classic of Jewish spirituality ever since its original publication-and has been read by thousands of people seeking meaning in modern life. In this brief yet profound meditation on the meaning of the Seventh Day, Heschel introduced the idea of an "architecture of holiness" that appears not in space but in time Judaism, he argues, is a religion of time: it finds meaning not in space and the material things that fill it but in time and the eternity that imbues it, so that "the Sabbaths are our great cathedrals."

Everyone else is wrong? 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Kingdom of the Cults, The

I have lived with this book since the year 2003 when I first purchased it at a local book store.

The author seeks to show why most of the other religions, that is to say, other than the mainstream, traditional Christian religions are wrong and all non-Christian religions, well . . . they don't even count.

The only ones I know of who go him one better are the Jeohvah's Witnesses who take the view that all religions, that is to say, all non-Watchtower systems are false, whether they claim to be Christian or otherwise. To the Jehovah's Witnesses, the harlot of The Revelation is not the Pope or someone else, but to quote them, it is "the world-wide empire of false religion." Both he and they seem to me to be rather arrogant in their similar assertions.

In his article on the Watchtower Society, he seeks to show that the Jehovah's Witnesses are wrong in their denial of the truth of the Trinity doctrine. This section of his book is replete with many scripture citations from mainly the New Testament.

I have looked up all his references including the ones he cites as used by the Watchtower theologians in support of their Arian point of view. In both cases, his and theirs, none of the texts are conclusive, some are only promising, and many assertions supposedly supported by a New Testament text turn out to be merely non-sequiturs.

I recently attended a Bible study group who use a weekly outline for study published by a Lutheran (LCMS) source. One weekly outline made the almost astounding statement that 'the Trinity doctrine confuses more than it explains and needs to be rethought for the 21st century.' Nevertheless, this comment displays a willingness to re-examine an historic, theological concept in the present era. And even more astounding when you consider Lutheranism would probably be grouped by Dr. Martin with traditional, mainstream Christianity. Personally, I don't see that the Trinity doctrine, as formulated, is explicitly taught in the New Testament.

Dr. Martin's tome sets out to prove that all other religions are simply wrong . . . worse, malicious and demoniacal in intent. He sets aside some space in which he counsels that true Christians need to approach cult members in a loving, caring manner. It mystifies me that after one has been exposed to (and possibly absorbed) so much of his evangelical bile, and blatant contempt, that such one could be expected to approach a cult member in a Christian spirit. His approach more resembles that of the "sons of Zebedee" who are referred to in the New Testament as the 'sons of thunder,' according to one translation. But then, their ancient example seems to have more to do with judgmentalism, denunciation and condemnation rather than Christian love.

And, he seems to be contemptuous of women, not entirely surprising, since the church has marginalized women from the outset--he cites such women as Marie Russell, Elena Blavatsky, Mary Baker Eddy, Myrtle Fillmore and other women as founding a specific religion or excercising undue influence on men who have founded a religion. He does make an exception in the case of Ellen G. White and Seventh Day Adventism. In the case of this chuch, he seems to cut it just a little bit of slack. Curious.

Then, he makes certain pronouncemnts on the psychology of some of the religious founders, such as Charles T. Rusell of the Watchtower Society, or Mary Baker Eddy of Christian Science. However, he presents no credentials which would indicate he has studied extensively in the field of psychology, normal or abnormal. And his psychological assessments of these individuals proceeds from what they have written or what has been written about them. Has he interviewed any of them?

And the book is replete with arguments "ad hominem" which I define . . . as discrediting the messenger before attempting to discredit the message. This from a man who holds a doctorate in the field of Comparative Religion is not a little surprising and is certainly disturbing.

In short, he resorts to some of the unscrupulous tactics of the systems and theologians he seeks to discredit or refute, which tactics he decries in his book. This has the effect of undermining his arguments. He is, I think, not one of Christianity's better apologists.

To summarize . . . If one wants to get an idea of some of the major religious thought that is out there, this book can be useful, but I would ad the caveat . . . do not accept uncritically all the ideas advanced. Reading between the lines is not a bad policy to be guided by in the case of this book or any other similar work. And checking out original sources is a good idea, too.

I remain unconvinced of his fundamental premises, but I do agree with him when he says that . . . 'the cults are the unpaid debts of the [traditional, Christian] churches.'

Editorial Review:

The authoritative reference work on major cult systems for nearly forty years. Working closely together, Ravi Zacharias and Managing Editors Jill and Kevin Rische (daughter of Dr. Martin) have updated and augmented the work with new material. This book will continue as a crucial tool in countercult ministry and in evangelism for years to come. Among cults and religions included are: Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormonism, New Age Cults, the Unification Church, Baha’i Faith, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and more.

A Completely Different Approach to Power 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The striking design of this book's brick-red cover with the huge white word, "POWER," dominating all the other type -- is deceptively attractive. I know from talking with a group of teen-agers about books on spirituality that have caught their eye that this imagery is alluring.

But, of course, the Buddhist writer Thich Nhat Hanh defies our normal assumptions about power: that it is something we strive to attain so that we can control and perhaps even dominate people around us. That's the typical model of power in our culture -- power as "winning" in a competitive world.

Anyone who has read his previous works -- or heard his talks in person or on video -- knows that his traditional Buddhist approach to life is to set aside striving and competitiveness. Instead, compassion becomes the glue that should hold together our community.

So, what he really is writing about here is the social force that flows from the kind of authority we build through our exercise of compassion and a positive approach toward life. Some critics have observed that, over the years, Thich Nhat Hanh's books have tended to repeat themselves. And, yes, frequent readers will find the same heart of Buddhist teaching here that we know from other works.

But there are fascinating, fresh anecdotes and emphases in his teaching in this volume. For example, there's an intriguing story here about his return to Vietnam -- after many years of exile -- and the way he approached this extremely challenging journey. There are a couple of practical supplements in the back of the book, including some plain talk about Buddhist principles in the realm of business.

Yes, there is a deliberate twist in the title -- but it's a play on words in the service of wise and compelling teachings.

Editorial Review:

Turning our conventional understanding of power on its head, world-renowned Zen master, spiritual leader, and national bestselling author Thich Nhat Hanh reveals how true power comes from within. What we seek, we already have.
