The Messiah has come! After the angels visit, the entire village of Bethlehem is buzzing about His long awaited arrival. Rachel and Zadok are honored to have been such a big part of His arrival and lead the village in making Mary, Josef, and baby Yeshua feel right at home.

Meanwhile, a growing caravan of travelers is coming to pay homage to Yeshua. Crossing the wilderness, they face many dangers from the land and marauders as they approach their destination. And they continue to watch the sky as the signs continue to unfold.

Unfortunately for all, King Herod is still as paranoid as ever. He wants any sign of rebellion crushed immediately, and the news of the arrival of Messiah will mean bad news to all concerned. Can the arrival of Yeshua be kept a secret from the mad king? If he does find out, what will the consequences be?

After reading the last book in the series, I guessed at the general outline of this one, and I was right. Anyone familiar with the Biblical story of the birth of Jesus will find no surprises in the story. Yet the characters were rich enough that the book was able to draw me in most of the time. The lessons on the meanings of Jewish law and how that ties into Jesus' birth were kept shorter this time then the last book, which really help. And, even though I knew what was coming, the ending still gripped and moved me.

Interestingly, there was no mention of any of the characters from the first few books of the series. While the visit to Jesus' birth was interesting, I hope we get back to them in the next entry in the series.

Editorial Review:

Who in Bethlehem could guess that their tiny, obscure village, populated by shepherds, would become the hinge upon which all history turns . . . and the focus of a terrifying rampage? Sixth Covenant is the conclusion of the three-book Nativity story within the A.D. Chronicles series. Sixth Covenant chronicles Mary, Yosef, and baby Yeshua in the first months of his life in Bethlehem. From the shepherd's visit to the escape to Egypt to the Bethlehem babies who gave their life for Jesus, discover the most critical events in the history of the world.

A Spiritual Classic 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Essential reading for anyone of any religious or spiritual persuasion who fancies her/himself a spiritual aspirant or truth seeker. Reveals the need to be constantly aware of the tendency we have to fashion our spirituality into a commodity that actually bolsters egoism rather than liberating us from it. Gives many examples of how this process takes place. This book forced me toward a deeper honesty about the motivations behind my own spiritual quest.

Editorial Review:

The now classic Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism is the record of two series of lectures given by Trungpa Rinpoche in 1970-71. "First discussed are the various ways in which people involve themselves in spiritual materialism, the many forms of self-deception into which aspirants may fall. After this tour of the sidetracks along the way, the broad outlines of the true spiritual path are discussed. The approach presented is a classical Buddhist one—not in a formal sense, but in the sense of presenting the heart of the Buddhist approach to spirituality. Although the Buddhist way is not theistic, it does not contradict the theistic disciplines. Rather the differences between the ways are a matter of emphasis and method. The basic problems of spiritual materialism are common to all spiritual disciplines."

Editorial Review:

Known around the globe for her indefatigable work on behalf of the poor, the sick, and the dying, Mother Teresa has devoted her life to giving hope to the hopeless in more than one hundred and twenty countries. She inspires us all to find a way to translate our spiritual beliefs into action in the world. How has one woman accomplished so much? And what are the guiding principles that have enabled this humble nun to so profoundly effect the lives of millions?
Now, in her own words, Mother Teresa shares the thoughts and experiences that have led her to do her extraordinary charitable work. A candid look at her everyday life--at the very simplicity and self-sacrifice that give her the strength to move mountains--A Simple Path gives voice to the remarkable spirit who has dedicated her life to the poorest among us.
Just as important as her beliefs are how they are put into action in the world, and A Simple Path also tells the story of the founding of the Missionaries of Charity, their purpose and practice, and the results of their tireless work. Through faith, surrender, and prayer, the missionaries live to serve others; they have improved the lives of countless souls and given dignity to the dying. Their mission has also produced a ripple effect, spreading human compassion to communities where there is need.
Through these examples, as well as the uplifting words and guiding prayers of Mother Teresa and those who work with her, everyone can learn how to walk the simple path that Mother Teresa has laid out for us, to help create a truly kinder world for the future.
A Simple Path is a unique spiritual guide for Catholics and non-Catholics alike: full of wisdom and hope from the one person who has given us the greatest model of love in action in our time.

A Time Line 4 out of 5 stars.

I get lost in time when I read books during this time period. I just finished reading another series similar to this. Very inspirational and focused on the one true Light.

Great series! 5 out of 5 stars.

I really love this series! It's so well written and each novel after the first was tied together in such a great way. I can highly recommend this book!

Great 5 out of 5 stars.

I loved reading about blind Penial...wonderful history lesson and gave you a feel of really living in the time of Jesus

Not bad 2 out of 5 stars.

I read this book after reading "The Kingdom and the Crown" trilogy by Gerald N. Lund and I thought it was an incomplete repetition of those books. Whereas I completely fell in love with "The Kingdom and the Crown", I found "First Light" boring and hard to read. I personally don't recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

Go back in time to first-century Jerusalem. It's a dark time in the world's holiest and most turbulent city. Walk with Peniel, the blind beggar who longs for rescue from his suffering. Peek into the lives of Susannah and Manaen, two lovers separated by overwhelming odds. And meet an unusual healer, who ignites a spark of controversy in the fire of hatred, deceit, and betrayal that is always burning in this ancient city. This first book in the A.D. Chronicles series will bring you face-to-face with the man called Yeshua.

The treasure 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Why claim trinkets when you can read one of the best devotionals on the market. I use it to keep my daily life in check, to remember to have the right focus and to live what I believe. This is the top of the charts for a "Christian" work. Brother A'Kempis was a great instructor and a wise disciple. So much of todays mediocre fluff is twisted by society, self centeredness and lazy Christianity where the thinking is done for those who don't see the value in meditation and self examination. Next to the Bible, this is my favorite work.

This is Imitating Christ? 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I found nothing at all about this book to be inspiring. The one sentence that speaks to this most, for me, is....

"It is better to lead a hidden life and care about one's salvation than to neglect it and work miracles. The religious who rarely goes out, avoids being seen and is unwilling to see others, is the one who is worthy of praise."

How is that Imitating Christ? Jesus didn't close himself off from people...he identified with everybody....especially sinners!

I didn't realize how "Catholic" this book would be even though I was aware that he was a Monk.

Imitating Christ has nothing to do with the Catholic Church, Saints, the Pope, etc. Christ came to set people free FROM empty religion, dogma and stale tradition. He didn't intend for us to be enslaved by a new religion. That isn't the freedom of Christ. Christianity is a relationship, NOT a religion.

Editorial Review:

The secret of the amazing influence and converting power of this little book is the secret of the lives of all the Saints--their nearness to God, and the reflection of His love in their lives and writings. Thomas's theme is the love, mercy, and holiness of God: with vivid clarity he shows man's complete dependence on, and need for, God.

A Great Read for Those Times You Do Not Understand God 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

"Why?" is a great read for anyone going through a difficult time when things do not make sense and it appears that God has turned His back on you.

The book is around 133 pages long and contains about 13 chapters that are 10 pages each. Each chapter asks a question that starts with the word "Why?" and focuses on a different aspect of trying to make sense of things that do not make sense.

Lotz' main point is that no matter what is happening to you, you can trust in God and His goodness and love for you.

Read for good encouragement. Highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

New from Billy Graham's daughter Anne Graham Lotz, further strengthening her powerful new UK ministry, a book for those who feel there are no answers. A book that takes us into the heart of suffering to show how Jesus is there with us and enables us to rise above the tragedy even though circumstances may not have changed. It's easy to trust God when things are going well, but how do you trust him when you are crying out in anguish. In the midst of such pain, it can be difficult to pray, to find solace in the Bible, to do anything other than hurt. In Why?, Anne Graham Lotz shows us how to find the friendship of Jesus in such despair. She takes us into the raw emotions of grief-stricken people and the very tender heart of Jesus by focusing on one of the most powerful and moving events in the Bible: the raising of Lazarus from the dead.

Editorial Review:

A treasury of timeless wisdom that the great author of War and Peace considered to be his most important and lasting contribution to humanity.During the last years of his life, Leo Tolstoy kept one book invariably on his desk, read and reread it to his family, and recommended it to all his friends. This was his compendium of wise thoughts gathered over the course of a decade from his wide-ranging readings in philosophy and religion and from his own spiritual meditations. It was banned under the communists, and only one volume, A Calendar of Wisdom, drawn largely from the writings of other famous thinkers, has been published before in English. Now, for the first time, Arcade will publish Tolstoy+s Wise Thoughts for Every Day, the volume comprising his own most essential ideas about spirituality and what it is to live a good life. Designed by Tolstoy to be a cycle of daily readings, this book offers thoughts and aphorisms for every day according to a succession of themes repeated each month-such as God, the soul, desire, our passions, humility, inequality, evil, truth, happiness, prayer, and the blessings of love. At once challenging, comforting, and inspiring, this is a spiritual treasure trove and a book of great human warmth.

Loving People 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

So often we find ourselves in the middle of stress and anxiety and wanting to run away from it all. There are two sides to being in that situation. We are either the ones trying to heal from wounds or we are the ones trying to help another heal from their wounds. Either side can bring on feelings that block the love and peace that is so important for us to feel and experience daily. Dr. John Townsend really shows in this book, Loving People, the need of healthy and deep connections with others in order to heal from pain in our own lives. If you've ever wanted to become emotionally healthy or to treat people better in your life, this book can help you get there. Townsend shows the importance of dealing with your own issues and gives great advice on how to do that. He then shows how to pass the love on. I believe so many people think they know how to love one another but fall short because of not truly connecting with others and taking time to understand someone else. This often is because they are still in a circle of pain themselves. Dr. John Townsend lays out the foundation you need in order to stop running from issues in your life, deal with pain in a very healthy manner, and then experience the gratification of passing that love on. This book is an excellent resource in learning 'How to Love & Be Loved' so you can start 'Loving People'. This is a great book!

    Editorial Review:

Nobel Laureate Desmond Tutu has long been admired throughout the world for the heroism and grace he exhibited while encouraging countless South Africans in their struggle for human rights. In God Has a Dream, his most soul-searching book, he shares the spiritual message that guided him through those troubled times. Drawing on personal and historical examples, Archbishop Tutu reaches out to readers of all religious backgrounds, showing how individual and global suffering can be transformed into joy and redemption. With his characteristic humor, Tutu offers an extremely personal and liberating message. He helps us to “see with the eyes of the heart” and to cultivate the qualities of love, forgiveness, humility, generosity, and courage that we need to change ourselves and our world.

Echoing the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., he writes, “God says to you, ‘I have a dream. Please help me to realize it. It is a dream of a world whose ugliness and squalor and poverty, its war and hostility, its greed and harsh competitiveness, its alienation and disharmony are changed into their glorious counterparts. When there will be more laughter, joy, and peace, where there will be justice and goodness and compassion and love and caring and sharing. I have a dream that my children will know that they are members of one family, the human family, God’s family, my family.’”

Addressing the timeless and universal concerns all people share, God Has a Dream envisions a world transformed through hope and compassion, humility and kindness, understanding and forgiveness.
