Editorial Review:

"For as long as I can remember, I've had Africa on my mind." Award-winning chef Marcus Samuelsson may be best known for his innovative take on Scandinavian cuisine at New York's Restaurant Aquavit, but his story begins thousands of miles away, in Africa. Born in Ethiopia and raised in Sweden by adoptive parents, his life transcends national boundaries, and his individual approach to cuisine is a global yet personal one that draws freely from many ethnic and cultural influences.

In The Soul of a New Cuisine, Marcus returns to the land of his birth to explore the continent's rich diversity of cultures and cuisines through recipes and stories from his travels in Africa. Stunning color images by award-winning photographer Gediyon Kifle bring the breadth of the African experience to life, from fishermen at sunset off the coast of Zanzibar to French baguettes loaded onto a bicycle in Senegal.

Marcus shares more than 200 enticing recipes, including his own African-inspired creations and traditional dishes from all parts of Africa. You can delight in spicy stews and Barbequed Snapper from West Africa and the familiar Mediterranean flavors of dishes like Moroccan Lemon-Olive Chicken, or make your way east and south for the irresistible taste combinations of dishes such as Curried Trout with Coconut-Chili Sauce from Kenya and Apple-Squash Fritters from South Africa's Cape Malay. Using ingredients that are readily available in American markets, the recipes are doable as well as delicious.

Of course, one of the keys to authentic African cooking is the use of spice blends and rubs, which elevate simple cooking techniques to an excitingly varied and intense level. Marcus includes his favorites here, with blends that go from sweet to spicy and feature everything from hot chili peppers and peppermint leaves to sesame seeds and ginger.

As he says, Africa is "a state of mind that I hope this book will help you tap into wherever you are." By cooking with a handful of this and a pinch of that, trying new foods and enjoying old ones in a new way, and lingering over meals with family and friends, you will bring the free, relaxed spirit of African cooking to your table and discover for yourself the soul of a "new" cuisine.

The Ecstasy of St. Teresa 5 out of 5 stars.
31 of 33 people found this review helpful.

I've always marvelled at Bernini's statue, Ecstasy of St. Teresa, which seems to precede art deco by centuries. Since this Penguin edition shows it on the cover, I was naturally drawn to this book. Having cracked the cover, however, I couldn't put it down; it's gripping, amusing and eminently readable--everything we know so-called devotional literature is not.

Post-moderns will find in this sixteenth century nun a like-minded comrade, as unlikely as that may seem. We, or at least, I could relate far more to her failures than successes, and there's an almost slapstick, which is to say light-heartedness running through these memoirs that has more in common with I Love Lucy than sentimental religious literature. The best known incident is when a horse threw her and she landed in a mud puddle. She looked up to heaven and said, "if that's the way you treat your friends, no wonder you have so few of them."

If that doesn't make you want to read this book, what would? Completely against the tenet of modernism that everything is always progressing and "every day in every way we're getting better and better," here's a kindred soul from the sixteenth century who many readers will instantly relate to. Another way to view this book is as an exercise in journaling, which many people find more difficult than it sounds. Teresa was ordered to write her memoirs, not unlike students in an English class who find it so difficult to think of anything to write about.

This book may not be to everyone's taste. But I would recommend it to readers who, like myself, are absolutely allergic to sentimental and devotional literature. I found it delightfully different and would group it with the few "classics" in this genre I have enjoyed, including Pascal's Pensees, Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress and St. Augustine's Confessions.

Editorial Review:

Born in the Castilian town of vila in 1515, Teresa entered the Carmelite convent of the Incarnation when she was twenty-one. Tormented by illness, doubts and self-recrimination, she gradually came to recognize the power of prayer and contemplation - her spiritual enlightenment was intensified by many visions and mystical experiences, including the piercing of her heart by a spear of divine love. She went on to found seventeen Carmelite monasteries throughout Spain. Teresa always denied her own saintliness, however, saying in a letter: 'There is no suggestion of that nonsense about my supposed sanctity'. This frank account is one of the great stories of a religious life and a literary masterpiece - after "Don Quixote", it is Spain's most widely read prose classic.

The Little Flower 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Therese of Lisieux lived a very sheltered life. As we begin the book she actually seems to be spoiled by her family. Her parents were financially secure and devoutly religious. Therese knew she wanted to be a nun from the age of three. She had bouts of poor health and she suffered the loss of her mother early in her life. And then the sisters she relied on left one by one to join the convent. But she also had security and love from her family. She also had an incredible sense of self-direction.

In her book Saint Therese describes souls as similar to different types of flowers. Some are roses, others lilies, and some like orchids, for example. And all can be equally pleasing to God in their own way, when seeking his role for them. People have different talents and different struggles, but these characteristics do not mean that any type is more valued than the other.

Saint Therese describes the Christian Church as one body, and how she wants to be the heart that loves. She writes frequently of the many ways that God is love. She believed that heaven for her would be to be able to help people on earth after she died. She writes that any sacrifice in daily life can be offered to God, for the conversion of souls, or help of others, whether it is the suffering of an illness or loss, or the performance of a mundane daily chore. Therese also writes much she preferred to speak directly to God as a child when she prayed instead of using formal liturgy.

Editorial Review:

St. Therese wrote this account of her life at the behest of her prioress sister two and a half years before she died. Writing in her cold cell for a short spell each evening, this obscure manuscript was completed just a few short weeks before she expired.

I really wanted to like it 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I recently read this book as part of a class in a local Shambhala center. The book, which is a sort of "Bible" for members of the Shambhala community, represents a collection of talks he gave over the years in which he defined many of the basic teachings that have become part of the Shambhala training.

My biggest disappointment in this book was how little grounding there is in Buddhism. There is a little overlap, but most of the book uses very different concepts and terminology that did not resonate with core Buddhist principles. Second, the book didn't seem well organized to me; it had a stream-of-consciousness feel that was difficult to follow.

I really wanted to like this book but ultimately just wasn't able to connect with it. For understanding Shambhala Buddhism, I'd encourage reading the two books by Chogyam Trungpa's son, Sakyong Mipham, and also anything written by Pema Chodron. To read more about Buddhism in general, I'd encourage trying Thich Nhat Hanh; Henepola Gunaratana; Jack Kornfield; Gil Fronsdal; Suzuki Roshi.

Editorial Review:

Since ancient times, the path of the enlightened warrior has been a powerful and inspiring ideal, showing us how we can master the challenges of life and draw power not from violence or aggression but through the cultivation of gentleness, courage, and self-knowledge. The Shambhala Book and Card Set offers a unique way to work with the teachings of warriorship to gain personal freedom and power, overcome negative habitual patterns, and find the sacred dimension of everyday life. This box includes: 53 cards each containing a Shambhala Warrior Slogan with commentary on the reverse side (packaged with a fold-out card stand) an instruction booklet with guidance for applying the slogans to life throughout the day and a paperback edition of Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior, Chögyam Trungpa's classic work exploring the principles of warriorship.

Pursuit of God Study Guide 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Tozer's The Pursuit of God is a deep, deep writing. Each reading reveals more of God and His purpose in our lives. The study guide, while faithfully following the format of the text, falls short of plumbing the depths of the text. It is a good starting point, but needs to be supplemented with teaching and discussion led by one who can reach into the depths the study guide leaves unexplored.

God Almighty, Lord of Glory! 5 out of 5 stars.

Wow! I love this book & I am not finished with it yet. I am reading it slowly and savoring every word. I will read it again & again. I do not even want to use the study guide but intend to study this book with Scriptures by my side.

Food for the Soul 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If I could recommend only one book besides the Bible, this book would be it. Written in 1949, it is a classic, and often quoted by more contemporary authors. Tozer provides practical insights and encouragement to those who hunger and thirst for God. His words are moving, inspiring, relevant, and profound. Once you have read this book, you will want to keep it handy and refer to it often.

Editorial Review:

A classic best-seller. "Lord, I must speak of Thee" wrote Tozer, "lest by my silence I offend against the generation of Thy children."

I read through this book quickly. It is very well written and up lifting. I passed it on to others since I felt I was freed from some of the Craziness myself.

A MUST READ! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is fantastic. I owed this to myself to read it. some of you seem holier than thou in your reviews because it is stuff you "already" knew....that's a shame because most people need to know that it is okay to not only be human, but to be Christian and be a true human, full of inadequacies and undesirable feelings of anger, resentment, etc. Do yourself a favor and read this information because it really can release you from what you "should" do or expect of yourself. Christians aren't perfect, just forgiven!

A must read for all believers 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

How easy it is for Satan to subtly twist the truths we know and mix them with cultural beliefs - especially if we grow lax in our walk with the Lord. This book will get you thinking and really examining what you believe and whether or not it is actually Biblical. Great for believers who have been in the family of God for awhile and perhaps find themselves a bit frustrated with so-called "Christian" behavior (in themselves or others).

This may also be a great book to recommend to people who claim to be Christians but don't act like it; perhaps they have bought into a false belief and are just confused or hurt and don't know how to find the truth. This book helps to clear the air yet also points the reader back to the Bible.

This book helps people understand twelve common false assumptions about Christianity that cripple their faith.

Master of short stories 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This book belonged to my father and he used to tell me stories from it when I was small. All parents should try to read this to their children - I remember being both mesmerised and confused by the stories : mesmerised because of their simplicity and flow, and confused because they led to deeper questions on society, humanity and God. Even if you are agnostic, you can read it for its human and literaray value.
After reading this you will have a hard time deciding whether Tolstoy is better as a novelist or a short story writer.

Editorial Review:

Uncluttered by the complexities of plot and character that daunt so many readers of the longer Russian masterpieces, Tolstoy's tales illumine eternal truths with the forceful brevity. While inspired by the sense of spiritual certainty, their narrative quality, subtle humor, and visionary power lift them far above the common run of "religious" literature. Moralists purport to tell us what our lives should mean, and how we should live them. Tolstoy, on the other hand, has an uncanny gift for simply conveying what it means to be truly alive.

Great reading 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have read all of the AD Chronicles. I have enjoyed all of them but I believe the first two were the best. The Fifth Seal was a great reading experience. The authors take great pains to transport the reader back to the time and place of the ancient Judea. Their characters are very human and easy to identify with. You find yourselves wondering how it will work out even though this is the Christmas nativity story and your sure Jesus will be born in the stable in Bethlehem.

a challenge to love the Savior 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Every Christian knows the story of Christ and his humble birth. It is what we do not know that makes "Fifth Seal" so enthralling. The Thoenes expertise in Jewish history and culture is what gives this historical novel its outstanding quality. The authors' talent for weaving an irresistible story is simply a bonus.
The elegant style of writing combined with just the right balance of detail and back-story makes a superb read. While most books I review are tolerable with a few being agonizing, I have yet to pick up a Thoene book that does not tempt me to put aside all other "must do's" and sneak another page or two. Number five in the A.D. Chronicles series, "Fifth Seal" is no exception.
It amazes me how the Thoenes can take a basic Biblical plot--of which we all know the beginning, middle, and end--add a few original characters, then tell it in such an amazing manner that the reader is entirely captivated from start to finish.
The additional portion at the end of the book allows for an in-depth individual or group study and should not be passed over.
No matter where the reader is in his/her spiritual walk, "Fifth Seal" is sure to be all of these: entertaining, enriching, eye-opening, and a challenge to love the Savior more completely.

Editorial Review:

The little town of Nazareth is a long way from Jerusalem and King Herod's evil clutches. Yet is anywhere in Judea far enough? In their most dramatic, ambitious, and significant historical series to date, Bodie and Brock Thoene once again transport readers back in time to first century A.D. to the birth of Christ--the most critical events in the history of the world.

Here are some of the remarkable features of Barnes & Noble Classics:

Barnes & Noble Classics pulls together a constellation of influences—biographical, historical, and literary—to enrich each reader's understanding of these enduring works.

Epigrammatic, enigmatic, intensely poetic, the Tao Te Ching is the mystical, spiritual soul of Taoism, one of the three great religions (along with Confucianism and Buddhism) of ancient China. The Tao is usually translated as “the way” or “the path,” but it is better understood as a universal life force that flows around and through all things. The Tao Te Ching teaches us that happiness is found in becoming one with the Tao, which enables us to live in harmony, balance, and peace and to develop the virtues of humility, moderation, and compassion.

Taoism emphasizes “non-dualistic” thinking and the interconnectedness of all life. The “dualistic thinker” looks at the world and sees differences, comparisons, and contrasts. The Taoist sage knows that all such judgments depend on the person making them, not on the reality of what is being judged. Unlike theistic (God-centered) religions, Taoism does not involve prayer to a deity. Instead, Taoists meditate on the wisdom in the Tao Te Ching, seeking to unravel the paradoxes and understand the complexities that lie within its simple language.

Well researched and well written 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Elisa Lindheim is young, beautiful, and gifted. The oldest child of retired Luftwaffe officer Theo Lindheim has grown up in Berlin, enjoying the privileges of her father's heroic World War I reputation and of his financial success as owner of Lindheim's Department Store. The shadows cast by Hitler's rise to power are darkening her life, though, in 1936. Estranged from her lifelong love and former fiance who's chosen to give her up on orders from his military superiors, Elisa lives in her Gentile mother's native Vienna and calls herself Elisa Linder. She plays in the opera house's first violin section, and - like so many other Jewish or part-Jewish Germans and Austrians - refuses to believe that things will continue to get worse. Any day now, the German military will have had enough of the mad paper hanger; and after that, life will be normal again.

Of course that's not what happens during the year that follows. As Theo Lindheim moves to get his family to safety, but fails to get himself out of Germany successfully, history in the making catches up with Elisa and forces her to make choices she never imagined anyone might have to face.

This is that rare book, a "faith based" novel that's worth any reader's attention. Well researched and well written, VIENNA PRELUDE moves along at a steady clip and then races to a suitably tense climax. The authors understand what far too many writers (especially of faith based fiction) don't "get" at all: that characters' actions must flow from who they are, not from what the book's chosen theme requires them to do. While the coincidences that keep parting and reuniting Elisa and American journalist John Murphy become strained from overuse, somewhere in the tale's second half, and a few of the characters' lines of dialog sound more like a sermon than an individual's words in conversation, the overall effect is just what it should be. The reader quickly becomes invested in knowing what will happen to Elisa and the others, and the triumph of their faith is all the more real because of the struggles that living it costs them. I expect to read more in this series, and that's the best compliment one can pay to any author.

Editorial Review:

ECPA Gold Medallion Award winner!

Opening in 1936, the Zion Covenant series tells the courageous and compelling stories of those who risk everything to stand against the growing tide of Nazi terrorism that is sweeping through central Europe under the dangerous and deceitful guise of Hitler's Third Reich. A new study guide is included in each book.
