Editorial Review:

About the Book

Today a renewed and vigorous scholarly quest for the historical Jesus is underway. In the midst of well publicized and controversial books on Jesus, N. T. Wright's lectures and writings have been widely recognized for providing a fresh, provocative and historically credible portrait.

Out of his own commitment to both historical scholarship and Christian ministry, Wright challenges us to roll up our sleeves and take seriously the study of the historical Jesus. He writes, "Many Christians have been, frankly, sloppy in their thinking and talking about Jesus, and hence, sadly, in their praying and in their practice of discipleship. We cannot assume that by saying the word Jesus, still less the word Christ, we are automatically in touch with the real Jesus who walked and talked in first-century Palestine. . . . Only by hard, historical work can we move toward a fuller comprehension of what the Gospels themselves were trying to say."

The Challenge of Jesus poses a double-edged challenge: to grow in our understanding of the historical Jesus within the Palestinian world of the first century, and to follow Jesus more faithfully into the postmodern world of the twenty-first century.

HILARIOUS! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is so poorly written that it's actually extremely funny - my sisters and I have garnered hours of fun from reading it aloud to each other to shrieks of mirth. That said, I have re-read it numerous times and genuinely enjoy the story each time. Lori Wick has a knack of making the reader care about her characters which transcends her incredulous plots and terrible prose. I mean, yes, it's completely ridiculous to imagine that anyone in real life could be as *perfect* as Shelby, but I can't help liking her anyway. It comforts me to pretend, for a few hours at least, that a world exists where nobody bears the royal family of a small pseudo-European country ANY ill-will and there is no such thing as a dissatisfied citizen. The characters seem to have nothing to do except have banal conversations and bake cookies, but don't get annoyed by the lack of realism! Just let go of your cynicism and enjoy the dream.

Editorial Review:

Now with a new cover, Lori Wick’s bestselling contemporary love story The Princess (over 200,000 copies sold) will reach even more readers.

In the Land of Pendaran, Shelby Parker lives a humble but good life. Her special qualities are eventually noticed by the king and queen of the House of Markham, who seek a new wife for their widowed son, Prince Nikolai.

To uphold the tradition of their country, Shelby and Nikolai agree to an arranged marriage. But while Nikolai is a perfect gentleman in public, he remains distant at home, leaving Shelby to wonder what is in his heart. Will the prince ever love her as he did his first wife? Can the faith they share overcome the barriers between them?

An indispensible guide for today's Christian 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Wright's prose here is accessible, deceptively simple, and effective in delivering the age-old brand new story of Romans to a modern audience. The narrative of Pauline theology gets a fresh breath from under the clutter of excesses seen throughout Christian literature. Though not straying too far from the tree, Wright does shake things up. For those looking for a faithful, and yet disarming, take on Romans you need look no further.

Editorial Review:

Writing in an approachable and anecdotal style, Tom Wright helps us see the great sweep of this letter. Romans has long been viewed as the book above all in which Paul spells out the basic doctrines of the faith, and the picture of God's life for us. These helpful guides provide Wright's own translation of the letter as well as explanations, suggestions, and thoughts for how the biblical text can be relevant to our lives today. Easy to read and great for all sorts of settings and all sorts of readers-- Bible groups, personal devotions, young or old, clergy or layperson...for everyone!

Awakening to the Wisdom of Feeling 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

CWG Book 2 expands upon the concepts presented in the first book, but the focus is more upon the collective consciousness. In similar dialog fashion, the reader is drawn into a more inclusive idea of what constitutes thought creating reality.

In one section, the author mentions how "getting back to your senses" means a return to how you feel, not to how you think. He describes feelings as the language of the soul. It is a brilliant reminder that our feelings are the reality of human experience and as such are a reliable indicator of where we are at on a soul level.

By describing how we create our collective reality, we are led to understand that nothing we do, say or think is without consequence in the world or in our own experience of it.

This book is a wonderful sequel to the beginning of the dialog in Book One.

Another book that describes the effect and implications of collective consciousness is High Way from Hell: Using Emotion to Fan the Fire of Enlightment.

Editorial Review:

Resuming the dialogue where Book 1 left off, Conversations with God, Book 2 moves from personal issues to more global and political concerns. Included are questions about the nature of time and space and human sexuality, as well as geophysical and geopolitical considerations of worldwide implication.

Editorial Review:

With every earthquake and war, understanding the nature of evil and our response to it becomes more urgent. Evil is no longer the concern just of ministers and theologians but also of politicians and the media. We hear of child abuse, ethnic cleansing, AIDS, torture and terrorism, and rightfully we are shocked. But, N. T. Wright says, we should not be surprised. For too long we have naively believed in the modern idea of human progress. In contrast, postmodern thinkers have rightly argued that evil is real, powerful and important, but they give no real clue as to what we should do about it. In fact, evil is more serious than either our culture or our theology has supposed. How then might Jesus' death be the culmination of the Old Testament solution to evil but on a wider and deeper scale than most imagine? Can we possibly envision a world in which we are delivered from evil? How might we work toward such a future through prayer and justice in the present? These are the powerful and pressing themes that N. T. Wright addresses in this book that is at once timely and timeless.

Spectacular art and a tool for transformation..... 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Alex Grey's art is unique, provocative, visionary and striking. The anatomical detail, overall composition and beauty is uplifting. While this type of art may not be everyone's cup of tea, it is undeniably creative and powerful.

This book is based on a series of paintings that are approximately 6'0" tall. They were meant to be used as a mirror for an individual to experience different aspects of themselves. In other words, to serve as a lens for a different perspective on what it is to be human. In general, the book proceeds from an outline of the body made up of elements, through the skelton system, blood vessels, nerves, etc. What is unique is that it goes beyond this to subtle and causal realms based on the experience of Alex Gray and the testimony of various mystics. It is meant to evoke awareness of these more subtle dimensions and even in book form could be used for meditations.

This book also contains images of Jesus, the Boddhisattva of infinite compassion and other enlightened beings. Again, these are meant for contemplative experiences where you look for these energies in yourself as part of a contemplative practice. There are also some beautiful images of a couple kissing, making love, a small family, etc. These latter category of images are similar to the cover in that they represent the various spheres of Being from the gross body through the spirit.

This book is on the large side, is printed on very high quality paper and contains a lot of color plates as well as contextual information. It is a bargain at the price it is being sold and some of the text is written by Ken Wilber.

If you are not familiar with Ken Wilber's work, either Kosmic Consciousness or A Brief History of Everything would be a great place to get started. Either of these resources will help you to appreciate Grey's art in more depth and understand what he is trying to achieve.

Editorial Review:

This unique series of paintings takes the viewer on a graphic, visionary journey through the physical, metaphysical, and spiritual anatomy of the self. From anatomically correct rendering of the body systems, Grey moves to the spiritual/energetic systems with such images as "Universal Mind Lattice," envisioning the sacred and esoteric symbolism of the body and the forces that define its living field of energy.

Includes essays on the significance of Grey's work by Ken Wilber, the eminent transpersonal psychologist, and by the noted New York art critic, Carlo McCormick.

a MUST read...... 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent book especially for someone who is going through one of life's difficulties. I bought multiple copies and gave them as gifts as well as keeping one for myself. I read it through once and pick it up periodically when I need to be "grounded" again.

Uplifting and rewarding if you're seeking answers 4 out of 5 stars.

This is the first book I had read by Marianne Williamson. I found it at a very low time in my life, as a new widow. For me the book's message was intriguing, especially in light of my recent bereavement. I recall a passage that really resonated with me, "We meet monsters and demons on the inner path...humiliation in order to grow..." and "the only way to rid ourselves of darkness is by bringing it to light." So simple and yet true. This reminded me not to hide from my own fears and feelings.

I found "Everyday Grace" a gently nudging guideline for my life during a time of chaos and pain. I would recommend it to anyone in the midst of change or stagnation. I came away after reading this with a feeling of hope and renewal. Elaine Williams

Editorial Review:

In Handbook for the Spirit, an extraordinary group of thinkers and teachers, including Andrew Harvey, Sue Bender, Rev. Michael Beckwith, Barbara De Angelis, and Marianne Williamson, celebrate their personal experiences of the divine. Previously published as For the Love of God, the book features the Dalai Lama on the central importance of kindness; Sue Bender on the small miracles of everyday life; Brooke Medicine Eagle on the Great Spirit; and Joseph Goldstein on the Dharma. Included are Rabbi Harold Kushner on how God appears in relationships, Brother David Steindl-Rast on perceiving the divine through the senses, and 19 other contributors. Each author shares what it is like to have a personal relationship with a higher spirit, how this relationship developed, and how it manifests in his or her life, relationships, and career. Most significantly, the authors offer insight into how readers can enhance their connections with a higher source. Handbook for the Spirit offers both hope and purpose in a world deeply in need of both.

Let all who believe, read. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Well written in a purposeful and clear style.
I have no quips with the content nor extent of this book. Those essential elements and doctrines of Christianity are well spelled out and those wishing yet more clarification or depth can use this book as their important initial step to knowledge.
A great book to offer a young believer or to strengthen the nomimal.
The Trinity while not deliberately outlined, is evident to anyone who has some background in rationality - if all three persons of the Trinity are equal in all respects and all God, then this Doctrine is well represented with many direct quotes from Scripture.
I particularly like that Stott reveals those necessary duties of Christians (not for salvation but part of justification). Too often the Christian is informed that naught but his mental assent is needed. Here Stott delineates those crucial outward elements incumbent upon those that claim a true fellowship with Christ!

Editorial Review:

Who is Jesus?

"If Jesus was not God in human flesh, Christianity is exploded," writes John Stott. "We are left with just another religion with some beautiful ideas and noble ethics; its unique distinction has gone."

If Jesus is not who he said he was, and if he did not do what he said he had come to do, the whole superstructure of Christianity crumbles in ruins to the ground. Is it plausible that Jesus was truly divine? And what might this mean for us?

John Stott's clear, classic statement examines the historical facts on which Christianity stands. Here is a sound, sensible guide for all who seek an intellectually satisfying explanation of the Christian faith.
