Essential Issues in Political Philosophy 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Glenn Tinder's _Political Thinking: The Perennial Questions_ is an interesting introduction to the study of political philosophy and political theory. It was assigned for an intro to political studies class I am currently enrolled in. The book's largest strength is that it presents various viewpoints on politics and focuses on numerous profound questions: estrangement and unity, inequality and equality, who should possess, what are the limitations and what are the proper end of power, and historical change. Tinder concludes his book with a thesis of "humane uncertainty." He notes how there are no exact and definite solutions to the world's political problems and that one should be extremely wary of any revolutionary political agenda, from either the right or the left, which promises a perfect world if all of its demands are met. He also takes into close consideration, as another reviewer notes, "the relationship between politics and metaphysics." Tinder notes well how faith in traditional orthodox Christianity has been on the downswing in Western societies during the past several centuries and how materialistic, man-centered methods of thinking have gained ascendancy in today's societies. Tinder's most sobering reflection is a hypothetical example of someone, someday establishing a perfect society on earth, totally eradicating injustice (in whatever form injustice may be correctly conceived). This perfect society would eventually die out anyway and fade into oblivion with each successive generation of human beings over time. Human history points toward an ultimate abyss as time passes making any achievement of a perfect society irrelevant in the overarching scheme of phenomena.

Editorial Review:

Among the new class of inductees into the "Longman Classics in Political Science" Series, this reissue of Glenn Tinder's highly regarded, unique text introduces political philosophy by posing questions that help students engage in the process of political thinking. Political Thinking stirs critical thought in students by concentrating on the questions of the political world rather than the answers. In addition, the great philosophers' responses to these questions are traced, helping students understand the historical and contemporary importance of these questions in politics and political life. The book has been reissued with a new Foreword by Steven M. Delue of Miami University of Ohio.

Editorial Review:

Liberty is a dangerous concept. It's sure to be misused and, if left unchecked, will likely bring not social harmony and happiness but their opposites. Nonetheless, liberty is absolutely necessary: without it there can be no authentic community. People are not free to do the right thing unless they are free to do the wrong thing; if they can't be wrong, they can't be right.

Thus does Glenn Tinder, in this provocative work, argue emphatically for "negative liberty" -- the liberty that wants primarily to be left alone, with the authorities interfering as little as possible in the lives of people -- and against "positive liberty" -- a liberty that seeks to guide people into a "fulfilling" life.

Tinder approaches the ideal of liberty with an intriguing combination of pervasive pessimism and strong optimism. He writes from an open, nondogmatic Christian point of view, believing strongly in reason and in the primary importance of free communication and dialogue, and he insists that Christians can learn from such non-Christians as Nietzsche, Freud, and Marx.

The substance of Tinder's book lies at the intersection of several major themes -- communication, human fallenness, the necessity of liberty, standing alone, and eschatology -- each considered in light of learning what liberty truly is and how it will affect the world at large. A profound, thought-provoking reflection on the ideal of liberty and its implications, Tinder's Liberty is bound to intrigue thoughtful readers everywhere.

Editorial Review:

In this concise and provocative analysis of modern culture, Glenn Tinder challenged conventional wisdom by contending that Christianity required no political program but rather a prophetic stance judging all programs and institutions against the ideal of love of each individual. In doing so, he helped to make clear what a Christian meaning in politics might be and charted a course between the extremes of passive cynicism and revolutionary idealism. Since it was first published in The Atlantic Monthly in 1989, this classic essay has stimulated many Christians and non-Christians alike to rethink the relationship between Christian faith and politics in contemporary culture. Glenn Tinder is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. His books include The Political Meaning of Christianity and Political Thinking.

Editorial Review:

This superb new volume in the EUSLR series is addressed to everyone interested in hope, regardless of their religious or philosophical beliefs. Glenn Tinder, one of our most astute and creative thinkers, probes the failure of modern, secular hope and shows, with great sensitivity and openness, why the tenets of Christian faith offer a true and meaningful source for hope amid the widespread distress, confusion, and despondency of contemporary life.

The importance of the Christian worldview to politics 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Glen Tinder is probably best known for his seminal Atlantic article"Can We be Good Without God?". The Political Meaning of Christianityexplores many of these same ideas in greater detail, examining, for example, the importance of Love in the political system (a novel idea.) I strongly recommend this book for both Christians and non-Christians wrestling with the importance of the transcendant in our political system. Kris Childress

A most astute book on Christianity and politics. 5 out of 5 stars.

Glenn Tinder's The Political Meaning of Christianity is what Reinhold Niebuhr might have written fifty years after The Nature and Destiny of Man (sic). Tinder gives us an astute analyis of the human condition, individually and socially, exalted through the destiny God gives us, and fallen through the exaltation we give ourselves. His chapters on "prophetic hope" as it works for social transformation and spirituality have little rival in current literature. This book, now sadly out of print, should be required reading for all theology students, no matter the degree of their specialization or education. John W. Riggs

Editorial Review:

Robert Kraynak And Glenn Tinder Contend that the major challenge of our time is to recover a true and authentic understanding of human dignity and to defend it against threats from modern civilization. In Defense of Human Dignity wrestles with the dilemma that contemporary society has developed a heightened sensitivity to the demands of human dignity while creating radically new dangers to humanity in the form of the totalitarian state, modern technology, genetic engineering, the practical ethics movement, and radical environmentalism. The inspiration for this volume is the publication twenty years ago of the Covey Lectures by Glenn Tinder under the title Against Fate, in which Tinder argued that the sanctity of every individual is the central moral intuition of the Western tradition.
