Editorial Review:

Prince Arjuna faced a dilemma that many face sooner or later--whether to take action that is necessary yet morally ambiguous. The difference is that Arjuna's action was to wage war against his own family. With the armies arrayed, Arjuna loses his nerve. Krishna, his charioteer and incarnation of divine consciousness, begins to teach him the nature of God and of himself, that Arjuna can attain liberation through union with God, and that there are several available paths. And so the most famous and revered of all Hindu Scriptures goes on to teach the paths of knowledge, devotion, action, and meditation, becoming the seed for all the Hindu systems of philosophy and religion that followed. For all of its profundity, Eknath Easwaran manages to translate the Gita in easy prose that neither panders nor obscures. Coupled with his thorough introduction, Easwaran's version comes off on all the levels it should: as a guide to action, devotional Scripture, a philosophical text, and inspirational reading. So what does Arjuna finally do? He follows his dharma, of course, as we all must. --Brian Bruya

Editorial Review:

Formerly a professor of Victorian literature, Eknath Easwaran discovered the treasures of wisdom in his own native India and began to pursue them with a passion. He has since studied them, practiced them, and moved to America to share them with the Western world. In his translation of The Upanishads, the font of Indian spirituality, Easwaran delights us with a readable rendition of one of the most difficult texts of all religious traditions. Each Upanishad is a lyrical statement about the deeper truths of mysticism, from the different levels of awareness to cultivations of love for God. There's one twist, though, for ultimately a devoted meditator realizes that God and the world are not separate from oneself. Then the ultimate goal becomes to reunite with the universal Self, achieving the infinite joy that accompanies such union. Easwaran recruited Michael Nagler to contribute notes to the translation and a lengthy afterword, which together with introductions to each Upanishad, guide us expertly through this strange and fruitful landscape. --Brian Bruya

Editorial Review:

According to Eknath Easwaran, if all of the Buddhist sutras had been lost except the Dhammapada, it alone would be enough for readers to understand and appreciate the wisdom of the Buddha. Easwaran's version of the Dhammapada goes a long way toward proving this. In a lengthy introduction, Easwaran summarizes the life of the Buddha and the main tenets of his thought, including key concepts such as dharma, karma, and nirvana. The language of the Dhammapada is as lucid and flowing as the Psalms or the Sermon on the Mount, and this is why it is one of the most loved and remembered of all Buddhist sutras. Its subject matter, succinctly, is about training the mind, which leads to kind thoughts and deeds, which bring peace and freedom from suffering. If you are interested in reading one of the gems of Buddhist literature, this is a good place to start; and if you are looking for a great version of this beloved scripture, you can't do better. Like all great world scripture, the verses here reward rereading and reflection, prompting you to "strive for wisdom always." --Brian Bruya

I would recommend this book.

Support on the path of life... 5 out of 5 stars.

I cannot praise this book enough... it has helped and sustained me so much in my life. Even in times of emotional turmoil, when I picked the book up and opened it at random - it gave me words I needed to hear. It offers a meaningful selection from all the religions. The book is intended as an aid to meditation, but truly it offers more than this. I hope others will benefit from the loving intention upon which the book has been created. (Makes a wonderful gift too, for a young person just starting out in life who may have need of its sustainance.)

Editorial Review:

Chosen for their universal spiritual appeal, literary merit, and recognized wisdom, these selections are perfect subjects for meditation and daily inspirational reading. Drawing from Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, and Native American sacred literature, this expanded third edition serves as a useful reference and guide to world mysticism. Included are Easwaran's criteria for choosing personally transformative passages, tips on memorization, and suggestions for further reading.

How to get control of your life 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I read this book after reading Easwaran's "Take Your Time", which had introduced me to the idea that controlling your mind was the key to getting your life into balance. Like that book, "Conquest of Mind" is deceptively easy to read, full of stories that lead you gently through a set of ideas until Easwaran suddenly presents you with a conclusion that makes unarguable sense. If you want a book that is really going to help you change the way you live your life for the better, then you should try this book.

Conquest of Mind 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Complete with amusing personal anecdotes to open each chapter, this book examines the joys and problems with meditation which the spiritual seeker will encounter. This is less an introduction of his complete program, like his book Meditation, and more a series of gentle talks he's giving students who have already progressed a little on the path and want to hear about the spiritual life. The author is Hindu, but doesn't emphasize any one religion to the exclusion of others. People of any, or no, faith can use this. Entertaining and a gentle, easy, thoughtful read.

Editorial Review:

Eknath Easwaran shows readers how to choose the way they think, feel, aspire, and desire.

daily readings for inspiration or education 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Easwaran takes a short quotation from a wide range of sources, and unpacks the meaning in a way that is uncanny and speaks straight to the heart. The appeal is that you don't have to understand all this brilliant philosophy and wisdom in one go: Easwaran takes just one idea for today and shows how to apply it to your life today. A great way to start the day, or to use in a discussion group or a yoga lesson.

DON'T PUT IT IN ON A SHELF- READ IT EVERY DAY 5 out of 5 stars.

Readable and inspiring 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a very readable and insiring book about one of the greatest figures of the 20th century, with many photos that make Gandhi's life feel even more real. The effectiveness of Gandhi's application of nonviolence is well explained, both in his life history and in an interesting appendix about nonviolence in the world today.

Gandhi; his life is his message 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The outstanding story of Gandhi's life shows us how a shy, insecure young man could transform himself into a political, social and spiritual giant. Gandhi, as a supreme representative of a very old culture, understood the momentum of the age he lived in and was able to translate his wisdom into practical solutions using the power of non-violence. Amongst others, he convinced the British to leave India, and was the living example of the power of love, respect and non-violence. Illustrating the power of universal truths common to all religions I highly recommend this book to everyone interested in human values and our future.

Editorial Review:

Gandhi the Man tells how Gandhi remade himself from a shy, tongue-tied, average little man to a Mahatma whose life can serve as an inspiration for our own transformation.

An Incredibly Easy Way to Relax and Focus 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

My husband read this book, and recommended that I read it as I mostly confidently, though sometimes stressfully, waded through the challenges of opening my own small business. Within the first few short chapters, Mr. Easwaran gives you a tip for remaining calm and focused, that is as easy as repeating the same few words silently to yourself. Like most of you, I have my family, friends, church, and colleagues for support, but many times, I just want to "take care of myself," get past the hurdle immediately before me, and move on. Using one of the mantra's suggested in this book has helped calm my mind. With a calm mind, I'm able to get in touch with what is really important to me, and make sound, positive decisions. The author then goes on to suggest some additional concepts which I found to be very thought provoking, including, reminding me of the part I can play in life by offering my services to society.

Editorial Review:

Every person has ways of dealing with life's challenges, but these resources are often locked beneath layers of stress and anxiety. Focused repetition of a mantram, or holy name, provides a simple, effective way to regain one's natural clarity, energy, confidence, and control. The good news is that the mantram's power to heal, calm, and restore is available to anyone.

Makes the Gita more accessible and gives food for thought 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Easwaran, a contemporary Hindu spiritual teacher presents the Bhagavad Gita, explained verse by verse with the help of anecdotes that range from the classics of Indian and English literature to gently humorous stories drawn from his own life in India and in Berkeley, California.

This three-volume project took ten years; he did it out of inspiration for Gandhi who was said to have used the Gita as a manual of everyday conduct.

The Gita starts out with the young warrior-prince Arjuna facing an enemy host across a battlefield; he despairs because the enemy is his own extended family. How can he fight them?

His charioteer and good friend is Lord Krishna whom he apparently doesn't know is the avatar of God. Krishna gives him a pep-talk about his duty, and thus does the Gita explode into a huge metaphor about the battlefield within oneself where one must go to extinguish ego and "separateness" and realize that all things are one with God.

I don't know how easily I could read the unadorned verses because it just goes on forever with Arjuna occasionally asking a worried question which prompts yet more instruction from Lord Krishna. But with Easwaran's interpretations, it's very enjoyable and clear.

I can't read too much at one sitting because the message of unity in God becomes way too repetitive for me. But it's a nice edition with each verse shown in Sanskrit characters and then English. Volume One took me about a month to read, progressing at a few pages every night.

Beautiful 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The Sanskrit, the poem, then the real life example of how to apply this spiritual wisdom is so beautifully written. It doesn't matter how often I read, or how far between reads, every time I open this book it applies perfectly to my life. It is a text for leading the good life with modern day examples. I've given this book to more people than any other and am so grateful it was recommended to me.

Not quite as wonderful as Volume I 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I found this volume a slightly harder read than the first volume. The author gets a bit preachy on the subject of nuclear disarmament and handgun control. The contemporary examples he brings up in his commentary can't hope to match the timeless grandeur of the Gita verses, but this is a small criticism. Overall, I found this volume valuable. This book (which contains the famous verse quoted by Oppenheimer: "I am become Death, destroyer of worlds,") gets into Lord Krishna explaining to Arjuna the wonderful and terrifying sides of who he really is, and the Way of Love through which to serve him.
