There's so much fragmentation in spirituality now days its a sweet refreshment to find a book that integrates body, mind, spirit and shadow practices in a seamless, clear and understandable fashion. Read it, pick up the concepts presented, and practice. In doing so the proof is in the pudding, and you'll be well on your way to experiencing an extraordinarily rich life.

Editorial Review:

At last, a complete guide showing how to use Ken Wilber’s acclaimed Integral Approach to design a personal program of transformational practice. Integral Life Practice (ILP) is a customizable, user-friendly approach to spiritual practice that meets the needs of the whole person by including not only spiritual activities like meditation and prayer but also exercises for body, mind, and “shadow” (any part of ourselves that we repress or deny). ILP allows practitioners to choose the practices that most suit them, in a mix-and-match style, adapted to whatever belief system or religion they may already be following. With its combination of exercises, explanations, theory, examples, personal stories, and illustrations, Integral Life Practice will be the bible of a truly integrated approach to practice for years to come.

"A mistake inside of an enigma wrapped in bubble-wrap." 2 out of 5 stars.
11 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Through an unfortunate clicking error, I accidentally purchased a copy of Ken Wilber's opus "A Brief History of Everything." I had read snippets of other Wilber books in the past and was saddened by my purchasing error when the box arrived from Amazon.

I reminded myself, however, that in the past I had made other purchasing mistakes and had then been ultimately pleased by the book when I finally got down to reading it. That was not the case with "A Brief History".

Armed with two undergraduate degrees, a doctorate, and a lifetime love of general reading on a broad host of subjects, I dove in. I felt that my education and experiences were both broad and narrow enough to decipher Wilber. I soon re-discovered that reading Wilber is like having your brain pushed through the extra-gooey sludge layer of popular intellectualism. His convoluted syntax is surpassed only by his wholly imaginary vocabulary. This kind of psycho-babble, new-age charlatanism should be reserved exclusively for the conversion of Silicon Valley CEOs to Wilber's zen-narcissism. The book should carry a safety warning for the general public. I am dumber having read it.

Reluctantly, I gave the book two stars, for three reasons. First, the cover photo on the book is the largest head shot of any author ever. It would have never fit on the back jacket flap. Second, Wilber's child-like belief in a universal unitarianism refreshes my own desire to believe in the transcendence of human nature. (Unless you think he's just saying all this stuff to sell books and lectures to Silicon Valley CEOs . . .?!). Finally, I'm amazed that he could string so many imaginary words together and make them sound like sentences.

Well, at least I got bubble-wrap.

Editorial Review:

In a breathtaking trip from the Big Bang to the Postmodern world we inhabit, Ken Wilber examines the universe and our place in it, and comes up with an accessible and entertaining account of how it all fits together. Along the way he sheds light not only on the great cosmic questions but on various contentious issues of our day, such as changing gender roles, environmentalism, diversity and multiculturalism, even the meaning of the Internet. A Brief History of Everything is the perfect introduction to the great Integral thinker at his wise and witty best.

Editorial Review:

Suppose we took everything that all the various world cultures have to tell us about human potential—about psychological, spiritual, and social growth—and identified the basic patterns that connect these pieces of knowledge. What if we attempted to create an all-inclusive map that touches the most important factors from all of the world's great traditions?

Ken Wilber's Integral Vision provides such a map. Using all the known systems and models of human growth—from the ancient sages to the latest breakthroughs in cognitive science—it distills their major components into five simple elements, and, moreover, ones that readers can verify in their own experience right now.

In any field of interest, such as business, law, science, psychology, health, art, or everyday living and learning—the Integral Vision ensures that we are utilizing the full range of resources for the situation, leading to a greater likelihood of success and fulfillment. With easily understood explanations, exercises, and familiar examples, The Integral Vision shows how we can accelerate growth and development to higher, wider, deeper ways of being, embodied in self, shared in community, and connected to the planet, which can literally help with everything from spiritual enlightenment to business success to personal relationships.

Spectacular art and a tool for transformation..... 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Alex Grey's art is unique, provocative, visionary and striking. The anatomical detail, overall composition and beauty is uplifting. While this type of art may not be everyone's cup of tea, it is undeniably creative and powerful.

This book is based on a series of paintings that are approximately 6'0" tall. They were meant to be used as a mirror for an individual to experience different aspects of themselves. In other words, to serve as a lens for a different perspective on what it is to be human. In general, the book proceeds from an outline of the body made up of elements, through the skelton system, blood vessels, nerves, etc. What is unique is that it goes beyond this to subtle and causal realms based on the experience of Alex Gray and the testimony of various mystics. It is meant to evoke awareness of these more subtle dimensions and even in book form could be used for meditations.

This book also contains images of Jesus, the Boddhisattva of infinite compassion and other enlightened beings. Again, these are meant for contemplative experiences where you look for these energies in yourself as part of a contemplative practice. There are also some beautiful images of a couple kissing, making love, a small family, etc. These latter category of images are similar to the cover in that they represent the various spheres of Being from the gross body through the spirit.

This book is on the large side, is printed on very high quality paper and contains a lot of color plates as well as contextual information. It is a bargain at the price it is being sold and some of the text is written by Ken Wilber.

If you are not familiar with Ken Wilber's work, either Kosmic Consciousness or A Brief History of Everything would be a great place to get started. Either of these resources will help you to appreciate Grey's art in more depth and understand what he is trying to achieve.

Editorial Review:

This unique series of paintings takes the viewer on a graphic, visionary journey through the physical, metaphysical, and spiritual anatomy of the self. From anatomically correct rendering of the body systems, Grey moves to the spiritual/energetic systems with such images as "Universal Mind Lattice," envisioning the sacred and esoteric symbolism of the body and the forces that define its living field of energy.

Includes essays on the significance of Grey's work by Ken Wilber, the eminent transpersonal psychologist, and by the noted New York art critic, Carlo McCormick.

Editorial Review:

Integral Spirituality is being widely called the most important book on spirituality in our time. Applying his highly acclaimed integral approach, Ken Wilber formulates a theory of spirituality that honors the truths of modernity and postmodernity—including the revolutions in science and culture—while incorporating the essential insights of the great religions. He shows how spirituality today combines the enlightenment of the East, which excels at cultivating higher states of consciousness, with the enlightenment of the West, which offers developmental and psychodynamic psychology. Each contributes key components to a more integral spirituality. On the basis of this integral framework, a radically new role for the world’s religions is proposed. Because these religions have such a tremendous influence on the worldview of the majority of the earth’s population, they are in a privileged position to address some of the biggest conflicts we face. By adopting a more integral view, the great religions can act as facilitators of human development: from magic to mythic to rational to pluralistic to integral—and to a global society that honors and includes all the stations of life along the way.

Editorial Review:

Wilber's most timely, accessible, and practical work to date. Here is a concise, comprehensive overview of Wilber's revolutionary thought and its application in today's world. Wilber has long been hailed as one of the most important thinkers of our time, but—until now—his work has seemed inaccessible to the general reader who lacks a background in consciousness studies or evolutionary theory. Integral Vision will allow a general audience to fully understand what all the excitement has been about. In clear, non-technical language, Wilber presents complex, cutting-edge theories and models that integrate the realms of body, mind, soul, and spirit. He then demonstrates how these theories and models can be applied to real world problems. Finally, Wilber discusses daily practices that readers take up in order to apply this integrative vision to their own, everyday lives. Wilber begins by presenting a leading model of human evolution, a model called "spiral dynamics." He then goes on to summarize his ground-breaking "all-level, all-quadrant" model for integrating the seemingly contradictory realms of science and religion—the "all-level, all-quadrant" model has already been adopted by leading thinkers in a variety of fields. In a chapter entitle "The Real World," Wilber shows how these rather abstract theories and models are being applied to real-world issues such as politics, medicine, business, education, and the environment. Wilber goes on to present a collection of maps of the Kosmos. These are broader models that can integrate the various worldviews that have been developed around the world throughout the ages. The final chapter of the book, "One Taste," proposes that readers take up an "integral transformative practice" such as meditation to help them to apply and develop this integral vision in their personal, everyday lives.

Sensual....Alluring 5 out of 5 stars.

Sensual and Alluring
I bought this book b/c of reviews of Mr Deida's poetic ability to write of the subject of sex. I was looking for an understanding of the mystical union between men and women. Mr. Deida's book wrote of this union; his diction..... warm, wonderful and sweet.
His writing allowed me to enter the mind of an `awakened', one who sees the union beyond the sensory perception of our flesh and mind. Finding God through Sex validated my experience of lovemaking as transcendent of the human condition, into the realm of spirit. I agree Mr Deida, through lovemaking, were are connected with God.
This book is an easy read. Mr Deida's prose reminds me of Sourwood honey; sweet, sticky and full of nourishment....YUM. Romantics of life and spirituality..........read this book!

Editorial Review:

No matter how much we pray or meditate, it's no always easy to integrate sexual pleasure and spiritual surrender. Bestselling author David Deida helps single men and women and couples of every orientation live up to the challenge of loving in unbearable rapture.

Important book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is my favorite book, period. No, it's not light comedy and you already know the ending. It's worth finding out what happens even with the seemingly tragic ending. This book is an account of two very inspiring individuals. Unfortunately, most of us will be touched by cancer sometime in our lives. This book will help with that struggle.

Understanding Love and Life Through Pain 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Wilber writes about his journey, in this life, with his late wife Treya. They met when they both had given up on finding the "right one"....and then Wilber and Treya experienced love and "practised the wound of love" for the 5 years they were together through their ordeals with Treya's malignant breast cancer.

Wilber says "real love shatters you, if you have not been devastated by love, you have not really loved.." Any reader who has ever experienced any form of love would understand what Wilber is talking about. There is, always, pain at the deepest core of ecstasy...the power of real love can shine on and shatter our lives all at the same time.

Wilber brings his personal ideas about consciousness, integral being and lifestyle which he has pioneered over the past 3 decades, which I thought is very natural. His life with Treya was a process where he learnt more about himself, his ideas and consolidated his philosophical views. His work is his purpose, evidently, so I felt it was very appropriate that be brings that up in the book. I feel some readers might find it "too much" if they haven't read any Wilber before or not open to considering certain novel ideas about mind, spirituality, existence and the like.

I thoroughly loved reading this book, it resonated deeply within my experience...tears were utterly inevitable knowing about two people so deeply in love and trying to let go of each other...hats off to Wilber for his unfathomable integrity in describing his struggles when he blamed Treya for all problems in his life after their marriage, when he admitted that he got drunk in Germany and lost control of all his emotions while grieving profoundly for his wife he knew would die, when he was allured, slightly, by the full-bodied German prostitute and completely & openly recognized what was going on, when he so bluntly talked about his own neurotic self and how he transcended it...consciously..

So, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to develop a deeper relationship with their lives, who does NOT believe in true love and is willing to test it, anyone who suffers from an addiction to lust (!), anyone who wants something new in their lives....this book has the power to change lives.

Editorial Review:

Here is a deeply moving account of a couple's struggle with cancer and their journey to spiritual healing. Grace and Grit is the compelling story of the five-year journey of Ken Wilber and his wife Treya Killam Wilber through Treya's illness, treatment, and, finally, death.

Excellent introduction to Wilber's early thought and a synthesis of Eastern and Western approaches to growth 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

I have read many of Ken Wilber's books and this is one of the better ones. The spotlight reviews do a very good job of pointing out the shortcoming and strengths as well as summarizing Ken's general ideas. I won't repeat what they have said here, but will add my own thoughts.

This book has a different tone and structure than many of Mr. Wilber's other books. There is less repitition and somehow he seems to be more accessible and lyrical in his descriptions and metaphors. If you read later Wilber, you will find it lacks some of the feeling tone of this earlier work.

In this book, Ken talks about boundaries and how they are often mental constructs. For example, the boundary that defines me could be taken arbitrarily as my skin. However, I might say I have a body, rather than that I am a body. This implies perhaps that I am a mind that is associated with a body and that I'm moving the line between self and other to the head. In a similar fashion, it is possible that a may have a transpersonal experience in which case my boundary moves out beyond my skin. The idea is much like the arbitrary division between a tree's roots, limbs and branches. These divisions don't necessarily exist as distinct boundaries on the tree, but arise from the analytical nature of thought.

In general, the book looks at a synthesis of Western and Eastern psychological and spiritual approaches to growth. It challenges tacit assumptions on both sides and tries to get the reader to take a broader perspective on reality while honoring what is good in each particular tradition. It is an extremely thought-provoking work and includes a lot of good scholarship. I find it to be highly complimentary to Wilber's later work and often more eloquent.

If you are looking for the best, most comprehensive and readable introduction to Wilber's work, I recommend A BRIEF HISTORY OF EVERYTHING. If you are interested in a good developmental psychology book from Wilber's point of view, then the ATMAN PROJECT will not disappoint. It covers development from birth to enlightenment and it quite fascinating. If you own these three books you will have a good overview of Wilber's most important ideas without a lot of overlap. If you are interested primarily in his latest thinking, then INTEGRAL SPIRITUALITY may also be a good choice.

Editorial Review:

A simple yet comprehensive guide to the types of psychologies and therapies available from Eastern and Western sources. Each chapter includes a specific exercise designed to help the reader understand the nature and practice of the specific therapies. Wilber presents an easy-to-use map of human consciousness against which the various therapies are introduced and explained. This edition includes a new preface.

Editorial Review:

The goal of an "integral psychology" is to honor and embrace every legitimate aspect of human consciousness under one roof. This book presents one of the first truly integrative models of consciousness, psychology, and therapy. Drawing on hundreds of sources--Eastern and Western, ancient and modern--Wilber creates a psychological model that includes waves of development, streams of development, states of consciousness, and the self, and follows the course of each from subconscious to self-conscious to superconscious. Included in the book are charts correlating over a hundred psychological and spiritual schools from around the world, including Kabbalah, Vedanta, Plotinus, Teresa of Ávila, Aurobindo, Theosophy, and modern theorists such as Jean Piaget, Erik Erikson, Jane Loevinger, Lawrence Kohlberg, Carol Gilligan, Erich Neumann, and Jean Gebser. Integral Psychology is Wilber's most ambitious psychological system to date, and it is already being called a landmark study in human development.
