An Exceptional Book 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 29 people found this review helpful.

In browsing my book shelf I came upon and then found myself rereading this incredibly simple yet profound book. The principles and ideas Stephen writes about are truly ways to discover how to live your life as the person you want to be. I especially found the section where Stephen writes about how powerful unexamined attitudes and perceptions influence how I react toward situations and others. Once I started looking at my predetermined thoughts...those same situations became less mundane and irritating. My experiences became more authentic, meaningful and enjoyable instantaneously. Stephen writes of this as a "paradigm shift", where our attitudes and behaviors, left unexamined, shape how we feel and act in our life in mechanical patterns.

Two authors that have also inspired and ignited my passion for living a magnificent life are Ariel & Shya Kane. The Kanes works: "Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment", "Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: The 3 Simple Ideas That Will Instantaneously Transform Your Life", "How to Create a Magical Relationship" and their internet radio show "Being Here" on Voiceamerica.com are all indispensable sources I turn to in supporting my well-being in all areas of my life. I highly recommend the Kanes and Stephen Covey classic, timeless book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People."

Editorial Review:

Stephen R. Covey, the New York Times best-selling author, brings you a principle-centred card deck based on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Covey reveals that living with fairness, integrity, honesty, and human dignity gives you the power to overcome the deeply imbedded habitual tendencies that can work against you.

What to Expect When You're Expecting is a perennial New York Times bestseller and one of USA Today's 25 most influential books of the past 25 years. It's read by more than 90% of pregnant women who read a pregnancy book—the most iconic, must-have book for parents-to-be, with over 14.5 million copies in print.

It's filled with the most up-to-date information reflecting not only what's new in pregnancy, but what's relevant to pregnant women. Heidi Murkoff has rewritten every section of the book, answering dozens of new questions and including loads of new asked-for material, such as a detailed week-by-week fetal development section in each of the monthly chapters, an expanded chapter on pre-conception, and a brand new one on carrying multiples. More comprehensive, reassuring, and empathetic than ever, the Fourth Edition incorporates the most recent developments in obstetrics and addresses the most current lifestyle trends (from tattooing and belly piercing to Botox and aromatherapy). There's more than ever on pregnancy matters practical (including an expanded section on workplace concerns), physical (with more symptoms, more solutions), emotional (more advice on riding the mood roller coaster), nutritional (from low-carb to vegan, from junk food–dependent to caffeine-addicted), and sexual (what's hot and what's not in pregnant lovemaking), as well as much more support for that very important partner in parenting, the dad-to-be.

Overflowing with tips, helpful hints, and humor (a pregnant woman's best friend), this new edition is more accessible and easier to use than ever before. It's everything parents-to-be have come to expect from What to Expect...only better?.

Good but not worth it if you have Omnivore's Dilema 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Let me say that on its own this is a very good book. Pollan does a great job of talking about how much of the "science" behind the nutrition claims of journalists and doctors is basically bunk and often may do more harm than good. He then goes onto explain what parts of the Western Diet (processed foods, industrial foods, corn syrup, hydrogenated corn) may be causing so many of the Chronic diseases) and some basic rules to live by for eating food.
That said, there is not much in this book that I did not already learn from Omnivore's Dilemma. The book read more like another chapter to Omnivore's dilemma than a stand alone book. So hence the three stars since I think its just okay if you have read Omnivore's, however if you haven't i would say this is more like 4.5 stars

The Truth to Health Is In Real Food: This should be required reading in ALL schools 5 out of 5 stars.

"Most of what we're consuming today is not food, and how we're consuming it--in the car, in front of the TV, and increasing alone--is not really eating."

It is the American paradox that the more we worry about nutrition, the less healthy we seem to become. Pollan explains why this has happened and what we can do about it. Understanding the context of health is vital to understanding how to achieve it in our current circumstances.

Editorial Review:

In today's world of exponentially increased communication and responsibility, yesterday's methods for staying on top just don't work.

Veteran management consultant and trainer David Allen recognizes that "time management" is useless the minute your schedule is interrupted; "setting priorities" isn't relevant when your email is down; "procrastination solutions" won't help if your goals aren't clear.

Allen's premise is simple: our ability to be productive is directly proportional to our ability to relax. Only when our minds are clear and our thoughts are organized can we achieve stress-free productivity and unleash our creative potential. He teaches us how to:

  • Apply the "do it, delegate it, defer it, drop it" rule to get your in-box empty
  • Reassess goals and stay focused in changing situations
  • Overcome feelings of confusion, anxiety, and being overwhelmed
  • Feel fine about what you're not doing

From core principles to proven tricks, Getting Things Done has the potential to transform the way you work -- and the way you experience work. At any level of implementation, David Allen's entertaining and thought-provoking advice shows you how to pick up the pace without wearing yourself down.

    Editorial Review:

From the authors of the 9.6-million-copy bestselling What to Expect When You're Expecting, here is What to Expect the First Year (over 5.6 million copies in print), the most comprehensive guide available on the next phase of parenting-newborn care.

Written with the same reassuring, lively authority as What to Expect When You're Expecting, the book is organized for ease of reference, leading nervous parents from month to month, check-up to check-up, even feeding to feeding. The chapters on each month address basic expectations of behavior and growth, as well as special concerns and decisions-from finding the perfect pediatrician to getting baby on a sleep-through-the-night schedule to choosing toys, shoes, and diapers. Equally important are the emotional issues a new baby raises for every member of the family-these are covered thoughtfully and thoroughly.

Additional chapters cover special subjects such as first aid, traveling with a baby, premature babies, adopted babies, and much more. Winner of the 1994 Parenting "Hall of Fame" Award from Child magazine's Child's Best Parenting Book Award. Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club and Better Homes & Gardens Family Book Service.

For Heartless Corporate-Drones only 1 out of 5 stars.

I read about this book in an in-flight magazine and thought it very much embodied my view of life: Don't delay your happiness or gratification until retirement. Seize the day and live it up now!

However, I was terribly disappointed. First of all, definitely heed the Warning printed on the back of the book. I didn't even notice the warning until it was too late. But there it was the whole time: "WARNING: DO NOT READ THIS BOOK UNLESS YOU WANT TO QUIT YOUR JOB"

I'm willing to quit my job, but you have to REALLY want to quit your job in order to do what this book says. You also have to have a meaningless job that requires almost ZERO work. I don't keep myself busy with busy-work at my job. I am genuinely busy with PRODUCTIVE, results-oriented work.

I'm a mid-level manager at a large non-profit organization. A lot of my job consists of interviewing children and adults for our programs. This is not something I can out-source to India. The interviews have to be done in-person and I have to follow-up in-person.

Even if I did have a job I could out-source to India, I wouldn't want to. To me, that is rather exploitive of a developing nation's people.

Additionally, one of the suggested methods to becoming part of the "new Rich" seems basically to scam people online. I think BrainQUICKEN (the author's road to riches) is very much a scam.

Finally, the author seems to dismiss seeking a deeper meaning to life. To me, exploiting people in a developing country, being completely lazy, and scamming people out of their money is not ethical and certainly not what I would recommend to anyone!

I'm 28 and I've taken a four-month vacation in Guatemala and Honduras, scuba dived in the Galapagos, completed a study tour in Israel, and spent a month conducting research in Ghana. I've traveled extensively on five continents. And yet I found this book absolutely INFURIATING.

If you are a corporate drone in a totally meaningless and worthless job, and you are free of the burden of any morals and ethics, this book is for you! Everyone else, move along.

    Editorial Review:

A radical synthesis of science and personal experience that advocates a sea change in the way we understand and confront cancer

When David Servan- Schreiber, a dedicated scientist and doctor, was diagnosed with brain cancer, it changed his life. Confronting what medicine knows about the illness, the little known workings of the body’s natural cancer-fighting capacities, and his own will to live, Servan-Schreiber found himself on a fifteen-year journey from disease and relapse into scientific exploration, and finally to health. Combining memoir with a clear explanation of what makes cancer cells thrive and what inhibits them, and describing both conventional and alternative ways to slow and prevent cancer, Anticancer is revolutionary in its clarity. It is a moving story of a doctor’s inner and outer search for healing; radical in its discussion of the environment, lifestyle, and trauma; and inspiring and cautionary in its certainty that cancer cells lie dormant in all of us—and we all must care for the “terrain” in which they exist.

Anticancer takes us on a serious journey and, ultimately, an empowering one. In the tradition of Michael Pollan, John Kabat- Zinn, Barbara Kingsolver, and Andrew Weil, Anticancer genuinely guides us to “a new way of life.”

Not your typical boring diet book, this is a tart-tongued, no-holds-barred wakeup call to all women who want to be thin. With such blunt advice as, "Soda is liquid Satan" and "You are a total moron if you think the Atkins Diet will make you thin," it's a rallying cry for all savvy women to start eating healthy and looking radiant. Unlike standard diet books, it actually makes the reader laugh out loud with its truthful, smart-mouthed revelations. Behind all the attitude, however, there's solid guidance. Skinny Bitch espouses a healthful lifestyle that promotes whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, and encourages women to get excited about feeling "clean and pure and energized."

    Editorial Review:

In perhaps the most important parenting book of the decade, Dr. Harvey Karp reveals an extraordinary treasure sought by parents for centuries -- an automatic "off-switch" for their baby's crying.

No wonder pediatricians across the country are praising him and thousands of Los Angeles parents, from working moms to superstars like Madonna and Pierce Brosnan, have turned to him to learn the secrets for making babies happy.

Never again will parents have to stand by helpless and frazzled while their poor baby cries and cries. Dr. Karp has found there IS a remedy for colic. "I share with parents techniques known only to the most gifted baby soothers throughout history...and I explain exactly how they work."

In a innovative and thought-provoking reevaluation of early infancy, Dr. Karp blends modern science and ancient wisdom to prove that newborns are not fully ready for the world when they are born. Through his research and experience, he has developed four basic principles that are crucial for understanding babies as well as improving their sleep and soothing their senses:

    * The Missing Fourth Trimester: as odd as it may sound, one of the main reasons babies cry is because they are born three months too soon.

    * The Calming Reflex: the automatic reset switch to stop crying of any baby in the first few months of life.

    * The 5 "S's": the simple steps (swaddling, side/stomach position, shushing, swinging and sucking) that trigger the calming reflex. For centuries, parents have tried these methods only to fail because, as with a knee reflex, the calming reflex only works when it is triggered in precisely the right way. Unlike other books that merely list these techniques Dr. Karp teaches parents exactly how to do them, to guide cranky infants to calm and easy babies to serenity in minutes...and help them sleep longer too.

    * The Cuddle Cure: the perfect mix the 5 "S's" that can soothe even the most colicky of infants.

In the book, Dr. Karp also explains:
    What is colic?
Why do most babies get much more upset in the evening?
How can a parent calm a baby -- in mere minutes?
    Can babies be spoiled?
When should a parent of a crying baby call the doctor?
How can a parent get their baby to sleep a few hours longer?

Even the most loving moms and dads sometimes feel pushed to the breaking point by their infant's persistent cries. Coming to the rescue, however, Dr. Karp places in the hands of parents, grandparents, and all childcare givers the tools they need to be able to calm their babies almost as easily as...turning off a light.

Hidden somewhere, in nearly every major city in the world, is an underground seduction lair. And in these lairs, men trade the most devastatingly effective techniques ever invented to charm women. This is not fiction. These men really exist. They live together in houses known as Projects. And Neil Strauss, the bestselling author, spent two years living among them, using the pseudonym Style to protect his real-life identity. The result is one of the most explosive and controversial books of the year -- guaranteed to change the lives of men and transform the way women understand the opposite sex forever.

On his journey from AFC (average frustrated chump) to PUA (pick-up artist) to PUG (pick-up guru), Strauss not only shares scores of original seduction techniques but also has unforgettable encounters with the likes of Tom Cruise, Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Heidi Fleiss, and Courtney Love. And then things really start to get strange -- and passions lead to betrayals lead to violence. The Game is the story of one man's transformation from frog to prince -- to prisoner in the most unforgettable book of the year.
