I bought this book for my daughter when she was 2 years old and she loved it! I had read it as a child and thought she might enjoy it. The names are tricky, but the kids find it entertaining watching these boys get into such trouble.

Editorial Review:

If you haven't already read Tikki Tikki Tembo, you've probably heard at least someone recite the deliriously long name of its protagonist: Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo, by now a famous refrain in most nursery schools. In this beautiful edition--complete with line and wash illustrations by artist Blair Lent--Arlene Mosel retells an old Chinese folktale about how the people of China came to give their children short names after traditionally giving their "first and honored" sons grand, long names. Tikki tikki tembo (which means "the most wonderful thing in the whole wide world") and his brother Chang (which means "little or nothing") get into trouble with a well, are saved by the Old Man with the Ladder, and change history while they're at it. Tikki Tikki Tembo is a perfect book to read aloud, but don't be surprised if you find yourself joining the ranks of its chanting followers. (Picture book)

Editorial Review:

A Ukrainian boy named Nicki wants his grandmother Baba to knit snow-white mittens for him. She warns her grandson that a white mitten will be hard to find if he loses it in the snow, but of course he promptly does just that! What happens next is the surprising part, as a mole takes refuge in the lost mitten, then a rabbit, then a hedgehog, an owl, a badger, and a fox. If you think the mitten might be a wee bit stretched out at this point, just wait: "Then a big bear sniffed at the mitten. The animals were packed in tight, but the bear didn't care. He crawled in anyway." When a tiny mouse squeezes in, her whiskers tickle the bear's nose. He sneezes, and "Aaaaa-aaaaa-ca-chew!" all the animals fly out of their crocheted cave. As the mitten sails through the air, Nicki spots it, reclaims it, and takes it home to show his smiling Baba.

Jan Brett is the illustrator of many well-known folktales, fairy tales, and poems, such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Owl and the Pussycat, by Edward Lear. Her special signature in her detailed artwork is the intricate borders, seen in this book as birch-bark panels with embroidered details and mitten-shaped vignettes offering additional insights into the story line. Brett is at her best when she illustrates animals, and the expressions on the faces of her creatures are a delight. She carefully researched the costumes, furniture, and house in this traditional Ukrainian tale--all are authentic. A fine story to read on a frosty night with a cup of hot chocolate, and if you ever get your fill of The Mitten, you can always try its delightfully original companion book, The Hat, winner of the 1998 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award. The best memory I have of reading to my son, years ago... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

All of Tomie dePaolo's books are treasures, and this one is no exception! While in first grade my son Joshua was assigned this book and to make a shoe box diarama. It is the best memory I have about his childhood many years ago, as he is 21 years old now. This was "our" first Tomie dePaolo/Strega Nona book, and after we completed reading it we went to our local library and found all others written by dePaolo.

dePaolo's books are so creative and colorful, matched only by mischievious but innocent, captivating story-telling and magical intrigue that kept my son reading for hours. I would highly recommend Strega Nona and all other Tomie dePaolo books to all parents of pre-school and grade school aged children and grandchildren.

A classic book 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a very basic morality story - Big Anthony (who never listens) was told Not To Touch The Pasta Pot, but when he had a chance he went right for it! Alas, he hadn't paid attention and so neglected to properly learn how to turn the pasta pot *off* - with predictable results.

The image of Big Anthony eating his debt to the village is priceless :)

ANOTHER WONDERFUL OFFERING FROM DEMI 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This wonderful Indian folk tale is brought to life by some wonderful illustrations and art work. Demi is one of the better illustrators, and indeed, writers of children's books active today. I do not know of one book by this author that is not a complete delight to the eye and ear.

This is a story of a "Wise Raja" and how he is tricked by a little girl. This ruler made the decision one day that he must gather all the rice in the land and store it away for future use. He left the poor people of the land in a state of starvation while he feasted at his palace from his over filled store houses. One day some grains of rice fall from the basket being carried to the Raja's home and a little girl gathers them up, but instead of keeping the rice, she returns it to the wise ruler. As a reward, he offers her anything she wants. She asks for one grain of rice. The Raja more or less insists she ask for more, so she tells him she would like one grain of rice, but would like to have it doubled every day for thirty days. The first day, one grain, the second two, the third four, and the fifth eight...and so on until the last day. You do the math. Needless to say at the end of the thirty days, the little girl has all the rice and the Raja has none.

This is an interesting story and an excellent lesson in math, in greed, in giving and in compassion, all wrapped up in one small book. The illustrations consists of full page pictures done in the style of India and is sprinkled with traditional miniature paintings as well. The detail and vivid colors are a feast for the eye.

This book seems to fascinate children. I have noted that they pull it form the shelf and set and read and look at the pictures over and over again. As an adult, I know I see something different each time I read the thing to a class. The children are absolutely amazed when it finally dawns on them what the little girl has done and it makes quite an impact when they realize the power of numbers. This is a great read-a-long book as you can give a mini math lesson and a moral lesson at the same time. I never tire reading it. To be honest, the pictures are worth the price of the book alone.

Editorial Review:

Exotic, beautiful, and instructive, this "mathematical folktale" by author-illustrator Demi emerged from her love of India. The narrative and the evocative illustrations combine to create a real sense of the culture and atmosphere of this romantic land.

It's the story of Rani, a clever girl who outsmarts a very selfish raja and saves her village. When offered a reward for a good deed, she asks only for one grain of rice, doubled each day for 30 days. Remember your math? That's lots of rice: enough to feed a village for a good long time--and to teach a greedy raja a lesson.

Wonderful!!! Better than the traditional version! 5 out of 5 stars.

This may be my favorite JATS fairy tale. The ending is a nice twist where Goldilocks learns an appropriate lesson without any scary consequences for breaking & entering the bears' cottage.

Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I really liked this book for my children! The drawings are beautiful and I loved that the bears made Goldilocks clean up her mess and then they walked her home. I highly recommend this and am buying a second copy for my son's class.

Wonderful book of morals and values 5 out of 5 stars.

This was the best book I bought for my daughter. I love how the end of the story involves Goldilocks listening to her mother in regards to doing her chores, instead of the original story where she runs into the forest, leaving the Three Bears' place a mess. This special twist involves her actually staying to CLEAN UP the mess she had made. Wonderful! Better than the original story!

Disappointed 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The actual book is very small (5"x4") which makes it hard to see the pictures clearly which appear muddied. If I had known the book was this small I would not have purchased it because it is not conducive for reading to a child, difficult to hold and look at at the same time.

Little Black Sambo 5 out of 5 stars.

It's a shame that a few people can tell an Author what to write. Censoring a classic is a sin.
I'm glad that Little Black Sambo is still available as it was originally writen and illistrated.

Editorial Review:

The jolly and exciting tale of the little boy who lost his red coat and his blue trousers and his purple shoes but who was saved from the tigers to eat 169 pancakes for his supper, has been universally loved by generations of children. First written in 1899, the story has become a childhood classic and the authorized American edition with the original drawings by the author has sold hundreds of thousands of copies.

Little Black Sambo is a book that speaks the common language of all nations, and has added more to the joy of little children than perhaps any other story. They love to hear it again and again; to read it to themselves; to act it out in their play.

This is one of my favorites of this book series because it makes the whole princess stage that all little girls go through accessible to little girls of color. My four year old loves seeing that a princess can look like her. I was thrilled to find this book.

Excellent 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a lovely story that is appropriate for all ages. My girls loved it. It is nice to have fantasy books that feature black girls. I was tired of all their books either having pictures of white children or being about being proud of being black. Sometimes they just want to read a fun fairy tale that happens to feature brown faces. My kids are two and four...not ready to be in the struggle just yet.

amazing 5 out of 5 stars.

This book, and the other books by Alvin Schwartz, are some of the most if not THE most memorable books of my entire life. Theres something special about a book if you read it over and over and remember the stories well into your adult life. The way the stories are told is magical, I mean here's this intensly horrifying situation, but the way its worded so simply and easily has a sort of strange feeling to the whole story. this is what keeps me reading this book. i remember in our library in grade school, i would just go straight to these books and just read them right there on the spot and go back to class. I cant really describe the way THE GREEN RIBBON makes me feel, its a very strange, scary, tingly, wondering, warm feeling. not many stories told so simply can do that. MAGICAL.

STREGA NONA
RETOLD BY TOMIE DE PAOLA
Reviewed by ETHAN

The book Strega Nona is a funny, nice, and is a story with a moral. When I was little, I loved it for its humorous plot and it's well drawn pictures. In fact, a lot of parents love it for there children.

Strega Nona takes place in a small village. In the village lives Strega Nona a nice old healer. She has a magic pasta pot. But, when Big Anthony comes along looking for a job, bites off more than he can chew.

The author TOMIE DE PAOLO has retold this children's story or book into a story for everyone no matter what the age. TOMIE has also given it pictures even though they do not give descriptions. They still are good understandable pictures.

Even though the book has a fantastic plot, pictures, and characters it has some faults. First, it did not captivate me and it did not give a good description of characters.
I would like to add something although it has its faults it is a wonderful book and it got the Caldecott Honor book Award.

This book is great for teachers because it has a moral and it is a perfect book for kids because they can understand it. Parents, I would say that this is the book to give to your children! That's why Strega Nona is perfect.

Editorial Review:

When Strega Nona leaves him alone with her magic pasta pot, Big Anthony is determined to show the townspeople how it works.

Stone soup is a contemporary version of the popular folktale 5 out of 5 stars.
35 of 37 people found this review helpful.

Stone Soup is a popular folktale in many countries that has been told for centuries. The Author Heater Forest tells a contemporary version of the popular folktale. Her Stone Soup is an imaginatively creative story with colorfully descriptive pictures that bring the plot about sharing to life. The author's writing is so clear and vivid that reader's can see the characters even before looking at the pictures. The illustrations are realistically drawn and help kids follow along with the story. The author uses the illustrations to teach kids a lesson about sharing. In Stone Soup, two hungry travelers stumble into a village. The travelers go door to door asking for food. Because the villagers say there is no food, the travelers decide to help them by making their magical soup. In the process of making the soup, the village learnes that if everyone shares good things can come out of it. The language and concept is simple for kids. When the traveler talks to the villagers, he uses simple words. "Please ," said one of the travelers, "we are hungry. Do you care? Will you share? Do you have any food?" These simple sentences express many ideas about sharing. "Do you care?" says that if a person doesn't share it's because they don't care. "Do you have any food?" says that if a person has food they should share it. Stone Soup isn't just good reading that is imaginative and creative; it also tells a moral, which teaches kids a lesson but doesn't preach to them. The moral, that if everyone shares then the outcome is huge, comes across clearly in this imaginative story. The travelers said the magic ingredient to their stone soup is sharing; every contribution counts from the smallest to the largest when people share. This is a idea kids can use in their lives. The author tells a well-written story that, even without pictures, could put the characters vividly in one's mind. The author makes a vivid picture of the travelers hopelessness in the reader's mind: "...travelers came along. Their coats were tattered. Their hats were torn. Their dusty shoes had holes in their soles." Using these descriptive words helps everyone enjoy this story. Susan Gaber illustrated this book. She made the pictures so detailed that a person can see the hair on a man's beard and the buttons on a kid's top, but not so much detail that it takes away from the story. The pictures are realistically drawn and colored. There are no purple trees or orange-haired people. This adds to the realistic plot of the story. Gaber does a great job drawing difficult items, for example: a kernel of corn and a green bean. The colors that are used are bright. When characters talk there is a picture of the main topic in the bubble of what the person is saying. An example of this is when a man says he has a potato and the picture shows a bubble with a potato in it. This helps kids follow the story. From start to finish, Stone Soup is a page-turner, with colorfully detailed pictures to its descriptive wording, which bring alive the imaginative story. Stone Soup is well-written for its age group, using word and concepts kids will understand, while at the same time teaching them a moral and new ideas about sharing. This is definitely one book to check out. -Michele Jicha

Editorial Review:

Two hungry travelers arrive at a village expecting to find a household that will share a bit of food, as has been the custom along their journey. To their surprise, villager after villager refuses to share, each one closing the door with a bang. As they sit to rest beside a well, one of the travelers observes that if the townspeople have no food to share, they must be in greater need than we are.
