In July 2004, Barack Obama electrified the Democratic National Convention with an address that spoke to Americans across the political spectrum. One phrase in particular anchored itself in listeners’ minds, a reminder that for all the discord and struggle to be found in our history as a nation, we have always been guided by a dogged optimism in the future, or what Senator Obama called “the audacity of hope.”

Now, in The Audacity of Hope, Senator Obama calls for a different brand of politics–a politics for those weary of bitter partisanship and alienated by the “endless clash of armies” we see in congress and on the campaign trail; a politics rooted in the faith, inclusiveness, and nobility of spirit at the heart of “our improbable experiment in democracy.” He explores those forces–from the fear of losing to the perpetual need to raise money to the power of the media–that can stifle even the best-intentioned politician. Two years after the best-selling Arthur & George, Julian Barnes gives us a memoir on mortality that touches on faith and science and family as well as a rich array of exemplary figures who over the centuries have confronted the same questions he now poses about the most basic fact of life: its inevitable extinction.

If the fear of death is “the most rational thing in the world,” how does one contend with it? An atheist at twenty, an agnostic at sixty, Barnes looks into the various arguments for and against and with God, and at the bloodline whose archivist, following his parents’ death, he has become—another realm of mystery, wherein a drawer of mementos and his own memories (not to mention those of his philosopher brother) often fail to connect. There are other ancestors, too: the writers—“most of them dead, and quite a few of them French”—who are his daily companions, supplemented by composers and theologians and scientists whose similar explorations are woven into this account with an exhilarating breadth of intellect and felicity of spirit.

Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and above all, how to embrace life fearlessly. Rose Mary, who painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family, called herself an "excitement addict." Cooking a meal that would be consumed in fifteen minutes had no appeal when she could make a painting that might last forever.

Later, when the money ran out, or the romance of the wandering life faded, the Walls retreated to the dismal West Virginia mining town -- and the family -- Rex Walls had done everything he could to escape. A dangerous, dangerous book - and woman 1 out of 5 stars.

The sheer ignorance of science and medicine that is CELEBRATED in this book is extremely frightening and dangerous for the health of America. To all of you who refuse to vaccinate your children -- your arrogance and ignorance is putting all of our children at risk! Just witness the recent rise in measles and mumps.

Folks, we are living in the middle ages. "Mommy knowledge" does not trump science and medicine. Jenny has done a tremendous disservice to the country, and too her child, by supporting the quacks who mouth the anti-vaccination line.

Please, do not support her ignorance by buying this book.

Because of Jenny's Books (which I only read in the last week) I have hope again for my Autistic Son. 3 months ago I saw Jenny McCarthy in a magazine for a Generation Rescue Benefit. I then went to the website, saw the information, found a DAN doctor and have started testing & supplements etc. While it may not make sense to the medical community at large the biomedical approaches have had wonderful success in reversing Autism. I thought my 10 year old son would never improve because thats what the medical community had instilled in me that Autism is not reversible. Bottom line period...nothing can be done.... However, after seeing Jenny, reading her books as well as other biomedical doctors, and hours of research on the internet I started to have hope. Now of course I am only a few months into this BUT my son IS TALKING MORE. Full sentences, better eye contact, bathroom smells & bowel movements already improved in such a short time! I am not expecting miracles but to have a child "improve" even slightly is worth everything as a parent. Kudos to Jenny McCarthy, and the Biomedical doctors, parents, reseachers, and anyone else out there who is bringing hope to MILLIONS of parents with Autistic children. After 10 years of losing hope I have found myself reborn and can only hope that everyone embraces the idea without past prejudice that maybe just maybe there really is something going on here with these kids. If you know anyone who has Autism read this book, and start to hope again.
