Editorial Review:

IBS is one of our nation's most untalked-about ailments, but millions of people - mostly women - suffer from the debilitating condition, one that must be controlled primarily through diet. Contrary to what may sufferers believe, eating for IBS does not mean deprivation, never going to restaurants, boring food, or an unhealthily limited diet. It does mean cutting out such trigger foods as red meat, dairy, most fats, caffeine, alcohol, and insoluble fiber. Heather Van Vorous, who has suffered from IBS since age 9 and gradually learned how to control her IBS symptoms through dietary modifications, collects here 175 recipes she has created over 20 years. IBS sufferers will be thrilled to discover that they can enjoy traditional homestyle cooking, ethnic foods, rich desserts, snacks, and party foods - and don't have to cook weird or special meals for themselves while their families follow a "normal" diet. Eating with IBS will forever revolutionize the way people with IBS eat - and live.

Editorial Review:

A New IBS Solution offers a revolutionary look at the way Irritable Bowel Syndrome is currently being treated. Today, over 60 million people of all ages across the country are suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrom(IBS), which is characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits. But because patients may find it difficult to discuss their bowel problems with their physicians, they often suffer in silence or even worse, "learn to live it". According to Dr. Mark Pimentel, Director of the Gastrointestinal Motility Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the majority of IBS cases can be treated successfully. Dr. Pimentel believes that the "missing link" or root cause of most IBS symtoms can be attributed to an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine. A New IBS Solution takes you through the historical evolution of conventional medicine's view on IBS in a way that can be easily understood. In addition, Dr. Pimentel presents a simple treatment protocol that will not only help you resolve your IBS symptoms, but will also prevent their recurrence.

What's The Real "Menace": Fiber Or Konstantin Monastyrsky? 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Eat your fiber, get your whole grains, you need to make sure you eat your fruits and veggies to promote good digestive health. Has anyone ever bothered to ask if all that advice is prudent or not? Well, Konstantin Monastyrsky has done the research on fiber and it's not as essential as we have been led to believe. In fact, he contends that fiber is not only NOT good for you, but it can wreak havoc as a "menace" on your health.

The book goes on to talk about all the horrific conditions that consuming high amounts of fiber can lead to and it's quite graphic for those of you who have queasy stomachs. But what made my stomach turn the most was how incredibly ignorant Monastyrsky was about the low-carb diets such as Atkins and South Beach.

An avid zero-carb diet supporter, he describes these more traditional low-carb diets as a "passing fad" and dismisses them completely. Since I lost 180 pounds consuming that Atkins "fad," I think it is quite arrogant of him to come down so hard on a way of eating that is very clearly helping a lot more people than he thinks. It looks like fiber isn't the only "menace" we learn about in this book!

Editorial Review:

One in five adult Americans suffers from Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Millions seek relief through dietary changes or medications that often prove unsatisfactory and may be accompanied by side effects. It turns out that relief doesn’t necessarily come from a bottle of pills or through diet changes—it can be achieved by learning behavioral self-management strategies that get to the source of the problem.

For over 10 years, Dr. Jeffrey M. Lackner has been helping patients gain control of their symptoms. His research—backed by grants from the National Institutes of Health—shows that these skills can help, whether their IBS involves diarrhea, constipation, or both.

Now Dr. Lackner’s Controlling IBS the Drug-Free Way offers IBS sufferers the same tools that have helped many patients control their bowel problems. Research shows that the techniques featured in this book can improve IBS patients’ condition and help them reclaim lives lost to this common gastrointestinal problem. The book offers a step-by-step approach that anyone with IBS can easily follow to reduce symptoms without drugs or professional help. User-friendly worksheets, interactive exercises, self-assessment checklists, and diaries for tracking symptoms and trigger foods are included to help readers master each skill. Also included are up-to-date overviews of medications and dietary strategies that readers can use to maximize symptom control.

Only some good science and mainly an ad for his center 3 out of 5 stars.
12 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Some of science behind his IBS treatments is sound. It focuses on having the correct kind of bactiera, etc. in the gut, testing for that and testing the bad bugs for antibiotic susceptibility which most places don't do.

Then there is the controversial food allergy testing. He blames food allergy for anything and everything. The idea of minor food allergies is controversial and the testing the labs do may not be valid or reliable no matter what he says. Even some of Dr. Wangen's peers at the Bastyr University argue against food allergy testing, saying it is too unscientific- the way the testing is done is not right. Although she also says it is not likely to do harm, just cost money. Some people seem to get relief, however, from eliminating foods from their diet.

Studies should be done to quantify and ascertain the real success rate of his treatments, because he actually has REAL causes for a condition and is not just doing the stupid song and dance doctors love to do of blaming the patient and telling them it is all in their head. They do this especially if the patient is female. The testing needs to be validated and symptoms correlated to positive results. No such test/ study exists as of today.

IBS is a real disease that needs to be taken seriously and treated. It does not surprise me that not many general doctors are even trying to find a solution, mainly because doctors don't care about their patients. In fact, this would hurt buisness and they don't like that- they are basically all about money. But why aren't other naturopathic doctors doing what he is doing? Why is he the only one?? Is he REALLY the only one? And if what he does is so great, why doesn't he train people and open other centers in large cities?
Two things about this book irritated me. First off, much of the information on the science is on his website. I payed too much for the book to tell me only a litte more about that. Next, much of the book talks about his former patients supposedly and how great they are doing now thanks to his treatments. It is a huge plug for his center.

If you want the testing done you can call them and they will tell you what labs they use. If you want to go to his so call miraculous center you have to go at least once and give him about $900 to $2000 (travel expenses and Seattlite attitude towards non-Northwestern persons not included). That is impossible for me. The book is almost useless if you can't go to Seattle. His attitude is kind of like he is the IBS god, and so what's a little world travel just to get his miracle cures? That maybe OK for some people, but not everyone. If you look at the 5 star reviews you will see many of these people live in Seattle or WA state.
Don't buy the book. Just go to his website and everything will be explained to you. Also do some research on food allergies- you will see he may not be all he's cracked up to be.

if you have bowel disease, you must read this book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I was diagnosed 17 years ago with UC at the age of 21. I've read many books and tried every diet, not to mention been to most types of alternative practitioners, & a slew of western doctors in various states, with no positive results. I recently got this book and for the first time I saw immediate & positive change. This book tells you what to avoid, and WHY. After fighting this disease for many years, I have never felt better. And after reading this book never have I had such a clear understanding of how the body's digestion works, and I certainly have never felt this good in almost 2 decades.

Editorial Review:

A new edition of the bestselling, groundbreaking work on bowel disorders

Thoroughly updated and revised, The Self-Help Way to Treat Colitis and Other IBS Conditions returns with the latest research on the diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and irritable bowel syndrome. It also includes the practical, effective, do-it-yourself treatments that have made the book a classic of natural health.

This writer can't miss 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I always enjoy reading Chopra and this book is no exception - the fact my digestion is far from perfect contributed to a particular interest in this topic! In Ayurvedic medicine, most diseases originate as an imbalance in the digestive system based on the principle that the constant renewal of every part of the human physiology is dependent on proper digestive functioning. Ayurveda views digestion as the body's means of extracting intelligence from food and then processing it to support the intelligence inherent in the entire human physiology. Gives new meaning the words "junk food", doesn't it?

Once again, advice is given according to dosha type (see above review for a more in depth discussion of doshas) and numerous suggestions are made for improving digestive health. It is important to note that this book is not written for someone suffering from a specific digestive illness - it is rather meant to improve overall digestion, and as a result health, for the average person who just needs a gastrointestinal tune-up. The holistic nature of the suggestions would have far-reaching mind/body impacts for anyone's well being so this small book belongs in everyone's personal library.

Editorial Review:

or the millions of Americans whose digestive disorders fail to respond to conventional medical treatments, Dr. Chopra offers an alternative approach based upon the principles of Ayurvedic medicine. Among the topics covered are the relationship between emotions and intestinal functions, biological rhythms and neuromuscular integration, and the importance of diet. LG Alternate.
