Dr. Seuss is for babies too 5 out of 5 stars.

This Dr. Seuss book is another one of my 16 month year old's favorite. There are things for him to touch and feel on each page, so it keeps him entertained. Each page is is a different with its own color and theme. The Dr. Seuss nursery books are great for toddlers and babies because they're not too long like the regular ones. So Rock on Dr. Seuss books, rock on.

excellent book 5 out of 5 stars.

Our son loves this book and so do we. We really enjoy reading it to him and it doesn't get boring like many other books. We got it when he was 6 months and now he is 11 months and he picks it all the time for us to read. I look for other books hoping they will be just as good but so far this is his absolute best. We very much reccomend it!

From there to here, from here to there, funny things are everywhere!
This touch-and-feel book invites babies and toddlers to pet and play with the most imaginative pets of all. Based on Dr. Seuss’s celebrated classic, this book of pettable pets has fur, feathers, flaps, slide tabs, and cardboard rings to ring Dr. Seuss’s adorable antlered Gack! From the Zed with just one hair on its head and the Wink that likes to drink pink ink, to the bluehaired pet that is fun to brush–the whole family will love bringing these

Popular wtih my under 5 year olds 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am not quite sure what is most appealing to my children, the rhymes or the ridiculously whimsical illustrations - they love the Zike-bike and the zumblezay the best. My 2 year old goes around singing the word 'Zumblezay'over and over so just the sound of it is obviously appealing.

I am not sure I like the concept of it much - it is telling Marvin K Mooney to go - and in no uncertain terms ("Just go go go please do do do") for instance

HOwever the book is effective in so many ways - it really interests my kids and they enjoy browsing it on their own. It has a nice rhyme to it which changes its cadence in parts adding emphasis and interest. It has the fun and whimsical illustrations which strange contraptions so loved by Dr Seuss and generations of children.

It might not be the best 'message' but I think that is lost in the sheer good fun of the writing and illustration. My kids enjoy it and so do I.

"If I were a bear..." 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Jasper Fforde is an ingenious crafter of puns, a weaver of stories completely fantastical yet grounded in some sort of reality that leave readers hungry for more. His second foray into the Nursery Crime Division is just as laugh-out-loud funny as the first book in the series, with a few literary twists befitting Thursday Next finding their way into the mix. "The Fourth Bear" is a quick-paced hilarious trip through the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Detective Chief Inspector Jack Spratt always manages to find himself in a pickle: he is lauded as the person responsible for capturing the Gingerbreadman, the most notorious serial killer in history, but infamous for messing up other cases, most recently that of Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother being swallowed by the wolf. When the Gingerbreadman escapes, Jack knows he is the only one who can capture the creature, but his boss takes him off the case, thinking he is too insane to perform his duties. He is sidetracked to a case about a missing journalist, Henrietta "Goldilocks" Hatchett, and his unorthodox investigation soon turns up a whole lot of questions but not many answers or connections. But Jack is certain that the whole "too hot, too cold, just right" theory indicates four bears, not three, and must find the evidence to prove his theory, and save his own life and the town of Reading.

"The Fourth Bear" is a showcase of Jasper Fforde's immense talent: each chapter is filled with puns and witty worldplay that any lover of literature will appreciate, especially the appearance of Dorian Gray. The plot is as convoluted as all of Fforde's works, yet he always manages to pull out a resolution that works to explain absolutely everything. Definitely "just right", "The Fourth Bear" will leave readers hungry and ready for the next case.

Editorial Review:

The inimitable Jasper Fforde gives readers another delightful mash-up of detective fiction and nursery rhyme, returning to those mean streets where no character is innocent. The Gingerbreadman—sadist, psychopath, cookie—is on the loose in Reading, but that’s not who Detective Jack Spratt and Sergeant Mary Mary are after. Instead, they’ve been demoted to searching for missing journalist “Goldy” Hatchett. The last witnesses to see her alive were the reclusive Three Bears, and right away Spratt senses something furry—uh, funny—about their story, starting with the porridge. The Fourth Bear is a delirious new romp from our most irrepressible fabulist.

Britains can still benefit greatly from this book 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 3 people found this review helpful.

In the latter part of the late 19.th century this book could have originated in every European country, or the US of that time. Especially the products of Anglo-American education were at that time violently pillaging the continents of our planet. A behaviour that was only to be achieved through physical violence as the main form of 'education'. This book instead tries to deter children from doing bad things by 'only' terrifying them, a clear humane progress in comparison to the then prevalent Anglo-American 'education-model'.
When our class went on a school-exchange to the UK in the early 1980ies (Broadstairs, near Margate, to be precise), they still had canes (yes, those canes, for beating) hanging on the walls of their schools, wich were still used to punish schoolchildren. A real jaw-dropper for everyone, exept for the British teachers, who saw nothing objectionable and didn't understand our uneasiness. Compared with that reality in UK's 1980ies, this book is progress. So if you know someone (e.g. a Brit) who still suffers from the beatings in his youth, donate this book to him, he certainly will benefit greatly from it and see what he missed.

Nice collection of poems 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This collection of poems relate to bedtime and nighttime. While much shorter than Jack's better known collections ("New Kid on the Block", etc.), I believe the emotional range is broader in this book. This book includes wistful poems and cutesy-scary poems, that would feel out of place in Jack's funny poems compilations. Of course, there are many funny poems, but the real gems are the others.

High marks to Jack.

Gets him in bed and keeps him there! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have been reading this book to my 3 year old son every night for the past week. He is a TERROR to get to bed despite keeping him in his regular routine. After we started this book all I would have to say after bath is "time for Parents think I'm sleeping" and he hops in bed without a fuss. The poems are pretty cute and the pictures are a delight. I think he likes it bc he thinks he's getting one over on his parents just like the boy in the book. I am thrilled with this book and intend on getting more from this author.

Editorial Review:

From Aunt Annie's alligator to the colourful Zizzer-Zazzer-Zuzz, Dr. Seuss's delightful book introduces early learners to the letters of the alphabet through an amazing array of crazy creatures. With his unique combination of hilarious stories, zany pictures and riotous rhymes, Dr. Seuss has been delighting young children and helping them learn to read for over fifty years. Creator of the wonderfully anarchic Cat in the Hat, and ranked among the UK's top ten favourite children's authors, Seuss is firmly established as a global best-seller, with nearly half a billion books sold worldwide. As the first step in a major rebrand programme, HarperCollins is relaunching 17 of Dr. Seuss's best-selling books, including such perennial favourites as The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham and Fox in Socks. In response to consumer demand, the bright new cover designs incorporate much needed guidance on reading levels, with the standard paperbacks divided into three reading strands - Blue Back Books for parents to share with young children, Green Back Books for budding readers to tackle on their own, and Yellow Back Books for older, more fluent readers to enjoy. Dr. Seuss's ABC belongs to the Blue Back Book range.

Children's classic 5 out of 5 stars.

Book was in excellent condition and not readily available elsewhere. It arrived promptly.

Wonderful Classic! 5 out of 5 stars.

We have the complete works of Milne. My 5 year old son and I absolutely LOVE Pooh collections. We enjoy our special time together reading Now We Are Six...and this book is not just to be enjoyed by a child...but for all of us who are still kids at heart and enjoy real literature of substance. Silly, heartwarming, fun and clever are just a few words I would use to describe this book! Disney's version of Pooh (books, movies, cartoons) is far inferior!

And as I sign off, I will leave you with one of my favorite poems from this book. Found on page 1 in my handed lovingly down 1950 edition. And after reading the poem, I ask you...who doesn't still feel like this from time to time? 6 or 106...this is a timeless classic!

Solitude

I have a house where I go
When there's too many people,
I have a house where I go
Where no one can be;
I have a house where I go
Where nobody ever says "no";
Where no one says anything-so
There is no one but me.

(AA Milne page 1 of Now We Are Six)

Editorial Review:

Here are the poems of childhood, of summer days at the beach and rainy days at the window, fishing trips and fanciful ones. Here are Christopher Robin's wheezles and sneezles, James Morrison's wayward mother, and so much more. Bright in color and true in spirit, these books are perfect for giving--to Pooh fans of all ages.

Nice pictures, but... 3 out of 5 stars.
12 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book because 'The Twelve Days of Christmas' is one of my son's favorite songs. I love the illustrations, they're beautifully done. However, the order of the lines appears to be an older form (and somewhat less standard now). The way I've always heard it sung was 12 drummers drumming, 11 pipers piping, 10 lords a-leaping, 9 ladies dancing... this book has the lords and ladies first, then the drummers and the pipers. I realize that this sounds like a funny gripe, but little kids can get really focused on something being in the 'right' order and since this version is going to differ from the way kids hear it sung, it has the potential to bug them.

A favorite Childrens Book 5 out of 5 stars.

This was one of my favorite books growing up. I, like almost all children loved christmas and this book brings back so many memories for me of Christmas' past. I can remember sitting and just marveling at the illustrations of the book. There are so many differnet things going on in each page that I could literally sit for an hour just going through the different scenes. There is of course the famous christmas carol progressing beautifully through the center frame of each page, but along the sides there is the story of a young husband and wife cutting down a christmas tree and having a beautiful 19th century christmas celebration with their two children. And on each page there is also the phrase "Merry Christmas" in (I think) 12 different languages.
I truly loved this book as a child, and even now as an adult (I'm 20). I'm writing this review from memory, if that shows how much of an impact this book had on me.

Fantastic, Just fantastic 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I got this book 32 years ago when my first daughter was born. We began "playing with" the dictionary when she was around 1, and it was such a source of laughs for both of us. She did learn her letters. At 18 months , while walking through a marked parking lot, she surprised my friends by saying "Mommy, standing on "A". I gave the dictionary full credit!

Now this same person is expecting her first child. The Dictionary is on it's way to her house right now.

A very fun way for children to learn to read and to develop a love of reading 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

While all of the books with the Dr. Seuss label can be considered essential reading for children, this one is more essential than most of the others. In terms of books used to help children learn to read, I found it to be unequaled in value. I still have the copy my daughter read and it is worn to the point where the spine is falling apart. Not through misuse, but from being opened and the pages flipped over and over again.
In the beginning, I read it to her, but it did not take long until she was sitting by herself looking through the pages and saying the words. Each word is accompanied by an illustration and in most cases a brief sentence where the word is used. Many of the illustrations incorporate the usual Seuss silliness, such as the green alligator carrying a sign stating, "I am a horse." All of which is designed to give the meaning of the word "true."
One of the best books I have ever seen to help children learn to read, I cannot include enough superlatives to express my opinion of it.

Editorial Review:

A silly book with a serious purpose—to help children recognize, remember, and really enjoy using a basic vocabulary of 1350 words. Written and illustrated by P. D. Eastman—with help from the Cat (Dr. Seuss)—this decades-old dictionary pairs words with pictures that carry their meaning, making it simple enough even for nonreaders to understand. A wacky cast of characters reappears throughout the book, making this perhaps the only dictionary in the world that is actually fun to read!

Not my favourite, as an adult, but my pre-schooler (4 year old) loves it 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I find this book disappointing, my 4 year old daughter loves it. The premise is that a girl wakes up and finds that things are strange in the world. There are lots of things in each picture to discover - shoes on the ceiling, missing legs, and especially strange prams and babys being pushed around.

There is definitely excitement in discovery. Some things are American and will be difficult for non-American children to know - Pictures labelled Washington which are other people for instance. But for the most part everything is easy to discover. Good early learning stuff, spelling etc - but mostly it is visual and there are excellent visual jokes which is why my children love it (candy cane legs, a worm chasing a bird etc)

I don't really enjoy the book greatly, I just don't like the illustrations a great deal. I find them a bit too child like, however it is nice sitting with the kids while they figure out what is wrong with the picture. There are other great books which do this too and maybe even do it better, however, clearly not from my child's point of view! She enjoys it.
