I'm am SOOO disappointed! 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I can't say I had high expectations for this book, but I was looking forward to reading it. Unfortunately I can't count the times I nearly threw it against the wall in despair and almost gave up. I don't give up easily though, and continued to torture myself with finishing this awful book. I read quite a bit, and was sooo disappointed that this book ended up rising to the very top of my 'never recommend/never read again' list.

As some others have said, the characters were so out of well..'character' with their useage of the "f" word and even the "C" word. I was completely put off, and I'm no prude....However, nothing felt loving or romantic about this book AT ALL. I was under the impression that this was a love story that spands time,etc..But I only felt slightly sickened by the two main characters interactions. He always came off a tad bit pervy...and she seemed naive and manipulated....when she wasn't using the 'f' or 'c' word or having sex....which they had lots of. Too bad we never had a chance to see what the rest of their world may have been like. There were no romantic encounters....the most sentimental moments happened when Clare was a child...and even those were a bit ruined by the fact that Henry is NUDE a majority of the time. I couldn't quite figure out what the author was trying to get across. The premise of the story is a unique and interesting one, but the actual story was not worth reading. I felt it could have been written so much better. It's a shame.

Editorial Review:

A New York Times Bestseller
A Today Show Book Club Selection

This is the story of Clare, a beautiful art student, and Henry, an adventuresome librarian. They met when Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry thirty-one. Impossible but true: Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder. Periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, disappearing spontaneously for experiences alternately harrowing and amusing.

A heartless killer with heart 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

How do you make a serial killer likeable? First, make him not only intelligent, but classy as well (Hannibal Lecter is perhaps the best example). Next, add some dark humor, to make it clear that he is not to be taken TOO seriously. And as a final touch, make sure that the folks he kills are unpleasant and when dead, will be unmourned (at least by the reader). In a nutshell, this is Dexter Morgan, Jeff Lindsay's amiable sociopath who makes his debut in Darkly Dreaming Dexter.

By day, Dexter works as a blood spatter technician for the Miami police. Every now and then, however, he is driven by his "Dark Passenger" to kill someone. Fortunately, his foster father, a veteran cop, recognized Dexter's murderous nature early and, knowing it couldn't be stopped, had it redirected instead: Dexter would focus his homicidal tendencies on killers and other low-lifes, using his father's instructions to execute perfect crimes.

As Darkly Dreaming Dexter begins, it's evident that he is not the only serial killer in Miami. There is another murderer who is specializing in prostitutes; this killer drains them of their blood, cuts them into pieces and arranges the corpses in an artistic fashion. Dexter is torn between wanting to help his cop sister catch the killer and admiring the man's work. Complicating matters is that this unknown killer seems to know all about Dexter's own deeds and seems to approve of them.

Darkly Dreaming Dexter was the basis for the first season of the well-received TV series, and though a fun read, is actually not as good as the show. This is principally because the show provides more detailed characters and plotting than this relatively short book, allowing the revelation of the killer's identity to unfold more gradually and logically; in the book, it seems to almost come out of nowhere. For that reason, though I am recommending the book, it's better if read before watching the show; however, if you liked one version, you should like the other, regardless of the order.

Editorial Review:

Meet Dexter, a polite wolf in sheep's clothing . . . a monster who cringes at the sight of blood . . . a serial killer whose one golden rule makes him immensely likable: he only kills bad people. Despite his aversion to blood, Dexter works as a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami police department, a job that allows him to keep tabs on the latest crimes and keep an eye open for his next quarry.

Wonderfully Creative 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

12 year old Percy Jackson has always known he is different - he's been kicked out of several boarding schools, he's dyslexic, and he's never known who his father was. But he is about to find out just how different he is - characters from Greek mythology have entered his life and his best friend Grover is not who Percy thinks he is. Before he knows it, Percy is accused of stealing Zeus's master lightning bolt and has just ten days to find and return it. Percy and his friends Grover and Annabeth embark on a journey to find the lightening bolt that will change all of their lives.

"The Lightning Thief" is a wonderfully creative children's book by Rick Riordan. There are, perhaps inevitably, some similarities to the Harry Potter series - Percy has two close friends, a boy and a girl; he calls himself a half-blood; Annabeth has a baseball hat that makes her invisible when she wears it; only Percy can be the hero of the quest; and the trio even encounters a bunch of spiders. But Riordan is a talented enough writer to make readers forget the Potter comparisons and enjoy the series on its own merits. The concept of Percy battling Greek Gods and Goddesses is a unique one and Riordan does an excellent job of incorporating Greek mythology into the story. Children will no doubt want to know more about mythical characters such as Poseidon, Zeus, Chiron, Charon, Medusa, and more after reading the book. Percy's journey is indeed an epic one and readers will love reading about his dangerous journey across the country. The book is written in the first person from Percy's point of view and Riordan does an excellent job of capturing Percy's voice. The great thing about Percy's character is that while in many ways he is extraordinary because of who his father is and the adventures he has, he is also an ordinary 12 year old boy who struggles in school because of his dyslexia, who is a loyal friend but also gets into fights, and who loves his mother even if he doesn't always obey her. Children of all ages will identify with Percy on some level.

"The Lightning Thief" is the first in the five book "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series, a series that looks like it will be a lot of fun.

Editorial Review:

Book 1

Twelve-year-old Percy is about to be kicked out of boarding school . . . again. But can he really be expected to stand by while a bully picks on his scrawny best friend? Or not defend himself against his teacher when she turns into a monster and tries to kill him? Of course, no one believes Percy he's not even sure he believes himself. Until the Minotaur chases him to summer camp . . .

If You Really Want to Hear About It... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

First off, I don't understand why there's so much hate around this novel. I'd say it's one of the best pieces of American literature I have ever read. The reader's brief journey through Holden's transition from the innocent over to the "perverted" adult world. From Holden's encounter with the water-spitting perverts to Holden's date with Sally in New York, the Catcher in the Rye is a great example of what the teenage years are like. This excellent novel is one that I truly related to, being a teenager experiencing some of the same feelings that Holden feels. While I don't know what it feels like to lose a loved one like Holden does, I understand how he feels about sexuality and that struggle to maintain what is innocent in the world, and I even could experience some of what it would feel like to lose a loved one through Holden's touching rhetoric in the novel. Some people might be offended by Holden's swearing, but I believe it helps us see more eye-to-eye to Holden. If the novel was written in a more articulate manner, the theme of the struggle for communication would be harder to convey. Furthermore, we relate more with him and feel like he is one of us. In several points of the novel, I felt myself laughing when funny parts happened and crying when sad parts occurred. The Catcher in the Rye is a touching novel that every teenager should read in order to preserve his character, something Holden would be very proud of.

Evan
P.S. I'm "Holden" on to my past as well...I think I belong in a mental instution and need to be psychoanalyzed. I came to that realization after reading this novel haha =]

Editorial Review:

Ever since it was first published in 1951, this novel has been the coming-of-age story against which all others are judged. Read and cherished by generations, the story of Holden Caulfield is truly one of America's literary treasures.

I won't be getting the final book in the trilogy 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I read the first 2 books in the Sign of Seven Trilogy, and I only bought the second book because I was hoping that it would be better than the first one, and thus get me hooked on the story but I was in for even more disappointment. I struggled to finish the first book and the second one was even more tedious.
I'm all for books on the struggle between good and evil, and don't mind a little bit of 'spook factor' but these 2 books were just downright creepy and not in a good way. I couldn't even get to care for the characters.
Unlike some reviewers I actually liked the Circle trilogy which was also a 'good vs. evil' trilogy, mainly because you could see the 'real' Nora Roberts in the writing-the witty conversation, the humor and the emotions, were all there. These are key elements that keep me returning to NR time and time again.
For the first time ever, I will be skipping the final book in a NR trilogy and I even skipped her last hardcover because the story line sounded like a do-over of so many of her older books. This saddens me because Nora has always been an auto-buy for me. Not anymore. Oh well, she's given us tons of great books over the years-I guess I'll just have to keep re-reading those until she returns to her great form.

Editorial Review:

With each of his #1 New York Times bestsellers, Dean Koontz has displayed an unparalleled ability to entertain and enlighten readers with novels that capture the essence of our times even as they bring us to the edge of our seats. Now he delivers a heart-gripping tour de force he’s been waiting years to write, at once a love story, a thrilling adventure, and a masterwork of suspense that redefines the boundaries of primal fear—and of enduring devotion.

Amy Redwing has dedicated her life to the southern California organization she founded to rescue abandoned and endangered golden retrievers. Among dog lovers, she’s a legend for the risks she’ll take to save an animal from abuse. Among her friends, Amy’s heedless devotion is often cause for concern. To widower Brian McCarthy, whose commitment she can’t allow herself to return, Amy’s behavior is far more puzzling and hides a shattering secret.

No one is surprised when Amy risks her life to save Nickie, nor when she takes the female golden into her home. The bond between Amy and Nickie is immediate and uncanny. Even her two other goldens, Fred and Ethel, recognize Nickie as special, a natural alpha. But the instant joy Nickie brings is shadowed by a series of eerie incidents. An ominous stranger. A mysterious home invasion.

And the unmistakable sense that someone is watching Amy’s every move and that, whoever it is, he’s not alone.

Someone has come back to turn Amy into the desperate, hunted creature she’s always been there to save. But now there’s no one to save Amy and those she loves. From its breathtaking opening scene to its shocking climax, The Darkest Evening of the Year is Dean Koontz at his finest, a transcendent thriller certain to have readers turning pages until dawn.

Pesky Prisoner, Potions Professor Plus Puzzling Ploys Plague Potter 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Good, solid storytelling. Ms. Rowling's third installment in the Harry Potter series continues to add interesting characters and create an even more appealing magical world for the reader to escape into. Each book has shown the gradual evolution of Harry from a neglected, abused child and mentored into a honorable young man. But the character-building journey is certainly a bumpy ride for young Potter. Moral messages and the complexities of the human condition abound as each new story has been introduced to the public. One of the underlying messages of the book is that most problems in life are not simply black and white, but more complicated. To convey this point in a fun, exciting manner is the sign of great writing. There's real heart to this series and deserves a wide readership.

Harry Potter 5 out of 5 stars.

A New York Times Bestseller

As Harry enters his fifth year at wizard school, Lord Voldemort's rise has opened a rift in the wizarding world between those who believe the truth about his return, and those who prefer to believe it's all madness and lies - just more trouble from Harry Potter. Add to this a host of other worries for Harry . . . and you'd know what Harry faces during the day. But at night it's even worse, because then he dreams of a single door in a silent corridor. And this door is somehow more terrifying than every other nightmare combined. In the richest installment yet of J. K. Rowling's seven-part story, Harry Potter confronts the unreliability of the very government of the magical world, and the impotence of the authorities at Hogwarts. Despite this (or perhaps because of it) Harry finds depth and strength in his friends, beyond what even he knew; boundless loyalty and unbearable sacrifice.
