A Christian's Review of the Reviews 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I was thinking of getting this book so I did what I always do, I went straight to the 1 star reviews. In reading those, I've decided I DEFINITELY won't waste my money on this book, so thanks for that. But in reading the reviews I was reminded by something I was told by a guy who left seminary school. He was a gay bartender and worked at the restaurant next door. A group of my co-workers and I went to the bar and naturally, a lively convo kicked up and the topic came up. We asked why he left seminary school, he was 'out' when he decided he wanted to go, so it wasn't anything about him being a homosexual that made him leave. He said that he realized that there was no point in him being there because the people who are gonna get it, will and the people who aren't going to get it will NEVER get it, no matter what you say or do. I'm sharing this because I think it needs to be put out there. If you're waiting for SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE about FAITH, you've already set yourself up for failure. It's faith! Faith is something you have when there is no reason to, that's why it's faith. If you're only willing to believe in Christ because you don't have a choice, there's evidence of his resurrection that irrefutable, you're not believing in Christ, you're believing in the scientific method. I have issues with the Bible and the bloody history of my faith but I still believe in the message and live my life accordingly. I don't try to sell people on Christianity, I figure my light will attract those it's meant to attract. I hope this makes sense.

Editorial Review:

This eagerly anticipated sequel to Lee Strobel’s best-selling The Case for Christ finds the author investigating the nettlesome issues and doubts of the heart that threaten faith. Eight major topics are addressed including doubt, the problem of pain, and the existence of evil.

Aside from the Bible, this is the best book I have ever read. This is a life-changing book about a life-changing subject. I find Philip Yancey to be a tremendous communicator. Since reading this book, I have bought and given away as gifts at least 7 copies of this book.

secret to happyness 5 out of 5 stars.

I just read the first chapters but this book has really touched me inside. The gospel is not a story about how to go to heaven or how to avoid hell. The gospel is the most beautiful love story ever told, about how God, being God, denied himself everything for our sake. And now, being totally acepted in Him, we are not left with the rest of our time on Earth to only daydream about heaven, but to enjoy the privilege and happyness of sharing God's love and grace with one another in this world. God does not want us to pay Him something back, He has everything He needs, He want us living close to Him, enjoying His company, His love, His grace, happy to be with Him and being a channel of His love and grace to the people around us.

Editorial Review:

On the heels of Philip Yancey's best-selling The Jesus I Never Knew comes this equally insightful exploration of grace, the most powerful force in the universe and our only hope for love and forgiveness. Winner of the Gold Medallion Book Award, the Christian Book of the Year Award, and the Retailers Choice Award.

Finding happiness and a better life by taking responsibilty for it 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a business parable, but really more of a life parable. The book provides seven lessons about taking responsibility and control of your life. Rather than letting your circumstances provide you with reasons for reacting to life and letting difficulties turning into personal failure, Andy Andrews preaches what some call an internal locus of control. No matter what happens to you, it is up to you to take charge and do something about it. Book is about David Ponder. He is a middle-aged guy with a great wife and a daughter. Like so many people who have been in a comfortable job for decades and then lost it, he finds his life spinning out of control. Unable to get a job anywhere close to the one he had before, without health insurance, and getting fired for merely using the phone to talk with his wife about his sick daughter, he wonders if his family wouldn't be better off with his life insurance than him. Driving recklessly fast, he spins out on some ice and wakes up talking to Harry Truman, then Solomon, and so on until he wakes up with his wife and daughter worrying over him in a hospital.

The seven lessons are very good affirmations to meditate on every day of your life:
1) The buck stops here. I am responsible for my past and my future.
2) I will seek wisdom. I will be a servant to others.
3) I am a person of action. I seize this moment. I choose now.
4) I have a decided heart. My destiny is assured.
5) Today I will choose to be happy. I am the possessor of a grateful spirit.
6) I will greet this day with a forgiving spirit. I will forgive myself.
7) I will persist without exception. I am a person of great faith.

After each of his encounters in history, David reads a short essay on each of these lessons and, of course, we read it, too.

My own take is that this is a superb book for teenagers just deciding who they want to be in life, young adults who want to sharpen their path, and adults who want to get on a different and better path to getting control of their life.

No, this is not profound art. However, the lessons can have a profound affect on your life and help you enjoy more, achieve more, and bless the lives of others more.

Editorial Review:

"Welcome to the Faith Club. We're three mothers from three faiths -- Islam, Christianity, and Judaism -- who got together to write a picture book for our children that would highlight the connections between our religions. But no sooner had we started talking about our beliefs and how to explain them to our children than our differences led to misunderstandings. Our project nearly fell apart."

After September 11th, Ranya Idliby, an American Muslim of Palestinian descent, faced constant questions about Islam, God, and death from her children, the only Muslims in their classrooms. Inspired by a story about Muhammad, Ranya reached out to two other mothers -- a Christian and a Jew -- to try to understand and answer these questions for her children. After just a few meetings, however, it became clear that the women themselves needed an honest and open environment where they could admit -- and discuss -- their concerns, stereotypes, and misunderstandings about one another. After hours of soul-searching about the issues that divided them, Ranya, Suzanne, and Priscilla grew close enough to discover and explore what united them.

The Faith Club is a memoir of spiritual reflections in three voices that will make readers feel as if they are eavesdropping on the authors' private conversations, provocative discussions, and often controversial opinions and conclusions. The authors wrestle with the issues of anti-Semitism, prejudice against Muslims, and preconceptions of Christians at a time when fundamentalists dominate the public face of Christianity. They write beautifully and affectingly of their families, their losses and grief, their fears and hopes for themselves and their loved ones. And as the authors reveal their deepest beliefs, readers watch the blossoming of a profound interfaith friendship and the birth of a new way of relating to others.

In a final chapter, they provide detailed advice on how to start a faith club: the questions to ask, the books to read, and most important, the open-minded attitude to maintain in order to come through the experience with an enriched personal faith and understanding of others.

Pioneering, timely, and deeply thoughtful, The Faith Club's caring message will resonate with people of all faiths.

Wonderful Read for Christians of all Persuasions 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The book is an excellent journey into the word of God and will get you pointed in the right direction. Many Christians do not study the word of God in the correct context and this book rectifies a long standing problem in the Evangelical community concerning the interpretation of Scripture. I was concerned about the author's pushing the TNIV as the translation of choice for serious study of the Bible. I would have preferred that they used the NRSV with the TNIV being a strong secondary translation for study. I did appreciate the fact that they encouraged the use of Bible dictonaries and commentaries to study scripture, but I felt that thay should have done a chapter on good study bibles that can aid in understanding the text. I did feel that they interjected their opinions too much in the book and gave us their pet peeves, couched in the language of exegesis and hermeneutics. In the same vein, they did debunk a few misinterpretations on some biblical passages and they allow for healthy dissent. The most important thing is to read the Bible and this book gives a good start.

Editorial Review:

Biblical interpretation for both beginning and experienced Bible readers. Changes to the new third edition include: updated language, new foreword, improved diagrams, substantial rewriting of several chapters to make them more user-friendly, and updated list of recommended commentaries and resources.

Editorial Review:

An invitation for every woman who’s ever felt she isn’t godly enough, isn’t loving enough, isn’t doing enough.

The life of a woman today isn’t really all that different from that of Mary and Martha in the
New Testament. Like Mary, you long to sit at the Lord’s feet…but the daily demands of a busy world just won’t leave you alone. Like Martha, you love Jesus and really want to serve him…yet you struggle with weariness, resentment, and feelings of inadequacy.

Then comes Jesus, into the midst of your busy life, to extend the same invitation he issued long ago to the two sisters from Bethany. Tenderly, he invites you to choose “the better part”–a joyful life of intimacy with him that flows naturally into loving service.

With her fresh approach to the familiar Bible story, Joanna Weaver shows how all of us–Marys and Marthas alike–can draw closer to our Lord: deepening our devotion, strengthening our service, and doing both with less stress and greater joy.

An Excellent Read 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Brennan Manning discusses the love of God in a very personal way. The key word here is "personal." He does not spend time analyzing the original terms or the background of passages referring to the love of God. Instead, he works to help the reader understand the love of God in a sense that is meaningful. Not to discount the value of a good word study, but if I were to sit and explain to my son that I love him because of physiological happenings in my brain that make me experience a euphoria that in turn compels me to treat him with care, that would mean absolutely nothing to him. On the other hand, if I were to show him regularly that I love him simply because he is my son, that would mean a great deal more. God has done this in the giving of His Son and in blessing us continually.

Manning shows why we should live our lives in the fact that the Gospel is about love. Jesus preached it, and the apostles after him preached it. Too often we try to start a Christian life with work. This can be destructive if one does not fully realize, as much as is humanly possible, the scope of God's love for us. Someone can start their walk with Christ not understanding this and slowly fall away. If one serves God out of a sense of obligation rather than out of a sense of joy, the fire that was once bright may fade away.

Manning admits that some might consider his book one-sided. "Brennan goes on and on about Abba, Jesus, radical grace, compassion, and the furious love of God, but says little about morality." I got a sense of this, but as I read I realized that writing in this fashion was needed to help the reader fully comprehend the depth of God's love.

The book had a profound affect on me, and I think this affect would have been lessened had he qualified everything with phrases like, "You've got to work hard. God wants you to be totally obedient." One of Manning's major positions is that God loves us no matter what we do, and in order to help us see that, Manning need not dwell on the fact that we must be obedient. Everyone knows this; even the unfaithful. What some don't realize, even faithful Christians, is that God loves us unconditionally. We may not believe we think this way, but our behavior says differently sometimes.

We often work our fingers to the bone hoping to win God's favor more and more. Manning illustrates how this cannot be done. He refers to the story of the prodigal son and how the father did not say, "You better get to work if I'm going to forgive you." As Jesus was illustrating, our relationship with God is the same in that He is always ready to forgive us no matter what. Obedience is necessary and Manning does not disregard this fact. He simply works to help the reader see that God already loves us and by serving Him from that vantage point, our Christian lives can be filled with the joy our Father originally intended.

Editorial Review:

Most Christians believe in God’s grace—in theory. But somehow we can’t seem to apply it in our daily lives. We continue to see Him as a small-minded bookkeeper, tallying our failures and successes on a score sheet. Yet God gives us His grace, willingly, no matter what we’ve done. We come to Him as ragamuffins—dirty, bedraggled, and beat up. And when we sit at His feet, He smiles upon us, the chosen objects of His “furious love.” Brennan Manning’s now-classic meditation on grace and what it takes to access it—simple honesty—has changed thousands of lives. It will change yours, too.

Timeless 5 out of 5 stars.

I have recommended and/or given this book to many, many friends over the years since I first read it. I give it with a caveat: You must have a soft heart toward the Lord and a listening ear for what He will tell you as you read it. It is like no other book as it tells the allegorical tale of Much Afraid and her special traveling companions as she is lead to escape the dismal, loathsome valley she was born to. She encounters many trials and tribulations on her transforming journey -- but Help is ever present, even in the darkest times . . . and the end of the book -- a new beginning. Highly recommend this book!

Editorial Review:

This illustrated version of the timeless classic was arranged by Dian Layton and beautifully illustrated by JoAnn Edington. It tells the story of Much Afraid and her journey to the High Places with the Shepherd. Filled with exciting adventure and a triumphant conclusion, this story will teach your child the importance of following the Shepherd.

Radical...not necessarily practical 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Brother Lawrence's spiritual classic can be summarized in a few short steps:

1. Have a mystical vision of the divine love of God. (Unfortunately, no hint of how this can be accomplished is given.)

2. Renounce the world and everything in it. (Larry Bro apparently had no family, career, or other extenuating circumstances, so he joined a monastery as a lay brother and cook.)

3. Pray ceaselessly, even while you're asleep. Don't worry about temptation, your neighbor, suffering, mortification, responsibility, complications, penance, formality, growth, doctrine, vocation, redemption, and anything else you can think of.

After around four to ten years of tormenting doubt and fear (by his accounts) you'll be ready to bask in the warm glow of grace!

The message of complete faith in God is indeed a great one. But the line between self-sacrifice and self-indulgence sometimes gets blurred. We are not given an account of any works of charity, love, or mercy that Brother Lawrence may have accomplished. Only that he went around happy all day. Somtimes he was so giddy with God's love that he would have to pinch himself to keep from giggling in front of other people. Then he derides normal people for not being drunk all day on spiritual consolations.

What is truly ironic is that Brother Lawrence's path was, at the time, thought to be a great shortcut. Compared to the discipline required of monks in those days, I'm sure it was. Nowadays, Deepak Chopra Winfrey would probably be unimpressed. The great Saints would probably recommend that you pick up your cross and eschew the easy path.

Editorial Review:

This work contains letters, ways and spiritual principles of Brother Lawrence, the 17th-century French monk who in his monastery kitchen discovered an overwhelming delight in God's presence.
