Great book!! 4 out of 5 stars.

Another wonderful read from Philippa Gregory. I read this on the heels of "The Other Boleyn Girl" a little out of sequence, I understand. In comparing the two, for me "The Queen's Fool" is far more subtle than "Boleyn Girl" yet is every bit as intriquing and interesting. This author does a great job in making the reader think what was behind Mary and Elizabeth's behavior.

Highly recommend!

Editorial Review:

A stunning novel set in the Tudor court, as the rivalry between Queen Mary and her half-sister Elizabeth is played out against a background of betrayal, conflict and passion. The savage rivalry of the daughters of Henry VIII, Mary Tudor and Elizabeth, mirrors that of their mothers, Katherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn. Each will fight by any available means for the crown and future of the kingdom. Elizabeth's bitter struggle to claim the throne she believes is hers by right, and the man she desires almost more than her crown, is watched by her 'fool': a girl who has been forced to leave her homeland of Spain, as a Jew fleeing the Inquisition. In a court where truth is wittily denied and lies are mere games, it is the fool who can speak plainly: in these dangerous times, a woman must choose between ambition and love. Elizabeth will not make the same mistakes as her mother.

Lisa Kleypas kicks off another great series! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Setting: London and Hampshire county, England, 1848
Sensuality rating: 8.5 (well-written sexual tension, multiple love scenes)

IMPRESSIONS:
Just read "Mine Till Midnight" for the second time, since I had wanted to refresh myself on the Hathway family before starting the second book in the series, Seduce Me at Sunrise (The Hathaways, Book 2). I loved it as much as the first time I read it. Lisa Kleypas is definitely one of the most talented (if not THE most talented) historical romance authors out there.

I absolutely loved the entire Hathaway family and reading about them makes you want to be part of the group. Amelia and Cam's relationship was very authentic (scenes to make your heart melt and toes curl!) and they were both very well thought out and well-written characters. Cam was wonderful: mysterious, possessive, loving, tender, intelligent, has a sense of humor, and I could go on and on. Amelia was also great (and we know how we're usually more critical of the female characters). She's a strong and independent woman, always trying to take care of and manage her family (sometimes to excess and their annoyance). She is loving, smart, and sweet, and finds in Cam a person whom she can finally let her guard down with.

CRITICISMS:
The insertion of a "bad guy" was unnecessary and did not add to the story in any way. I also was not a fan of the supernatural element of Laura's ghost or spirit or whatever it was (very light, so don't let that put you off).

BOTTOM LINE:
Read it right away and then read #2 in the series. I can't wait for #3!!

Editorial Review:

When an unexpected inheritance elevates her family to the ranks of the aristocracy, Amelia Hathaway discovers that tending to her younger sisters and wayward brother was easy compared to navigating the intricacies of the ton. Even more challenging: the attraction she feels for the tall, dark, and dangerously handsome Cam Rohan.

Wealthy beyond most men’s dreams, Cam has tired of society’s petty restrictions and longs to return to his “uncivilized” Gypsy roots. When the delectable Amelia appeals to him for help, he intends to offer only friendship—but intentions are no match for the desire that blindsides them both. But can a man who spurns tradition be tempted into that most time-honored arrangement: marriage? Life in London society is about to get a whole lot hotter….

Editorial Review:

On a warm May night in San Francisco, the Ritz-Carlton ballroom shimmers with crystal and silver as a glittering, celebrity-studded crowd gathers for a charity dinner dance. The evening is perfect–until, just minutes before midnight, the room begins to sway. Glass shatters. And as the lights go out, people begin to scream….

In the earthquake’s aftermath, the lives of four strangers will converge.… Sarah Sloane, the beautiful wife of a financial whiz, watches her perfect world fall to pieces…. Grammy-winning singer Melanie Free, the event’s headliner, comes to a turning point in her life and career…. Photographer Everett Carson, a former war correspondent whose personal demons have demoted him to covering society parties, finds new purpose amid the carnage…and Sister Maggie Kent, a nun who normally works in jeans and high-tops with the homeless, searches through the rubble–and knows instantly that there is much work to be done….

As the city staggers back to life, a chain reaction of extraordinary events will touch each of the survivors.… For Sarah, it begins with the discovery of a crime and a betrayal, then a strength she never knew she had. For Melanie, volunteering at a refugee camp will open new worlds of possibility. And Everett will be shaken by the unlikely relationship he forges with Maggie, who helps him rebuild his shattered life–and upends her own in the process. But as a year passes, and the anniversary of the earthquake approaches, more surprises are in store–as each discovers the unexpected gifts in a tragedy’s wake…and the amazing grace of new beginnings.

Throughout these enthralling pages, Danielle Steel creates a stunning array of contrasts–from the dazzle of a society benefit to the chaos of a makeshift hospital, from the pampered lives of rock stars to the quiet heroism of emergency volunteers. It is her most powerful and life-affirming novel to date.

Love goes first, thriller - second 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I've never read anything by this author before, but after watching a movie called "The Notebook", I thought that this writer is worth my attention. At first, I kind of expected to get some complicated love story with characters wandering back and forth with their decisions, but later on I got really satisfied to find out thriller included into the story. As I was a little bit tired at that time of reading "simple" love stories, this book provided me exactly what I needed: some action intertwined into the love story.

Editorial Review:

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Nights in Rodanthe explores a darker realm of the heart in an explosive and emotional tale of love and obsession. At 29, Julie Barenson is too young to give up on love. Four years after her husband's tragic death, she is finally ready to risk giving her heart to someone again. But to whom? Should it be Richard Franklin, who is handsome and sophisticated and treats her like a queen, or Mike Harris, who is Julie's best friend in the world, though not as debonair? Now, with a decision that should bring her more happiness than she's had in years, Julie's life is about to become a living nightmare, as one man's jealousy spins into a deadly obsession.

Great suspense novel 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Warning: spoiler

A fantastic novel, that deserves a place next to "Wuthering Hights", "Great Expectations" or "Jane Eyre". Daphne Dumaurier's beautiful and rich writing style and amazing storytelling skills make this novel great fun to read. She handles the character development wonderfully well, in particular the overly sensitive and devoted heroine, the sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers, the despicable playboy Favell, and the gloomy and jaded Max de Winter.

The novel works on many levels. There are some elements of the old fairy-tales Cinderella (servant-girl marries nobleman) and Bluebeard (forbidden room, murderous husband), but with a different, surprising twist. It's also a story of growing-up, as the nameless heroine matures from a timid girl into a strong-willed woman during her various trials. The author brilliantly disguises the characters' motivations, so that the true causes of things remain a mystery until about two-thirds into the novel when the main crisis unfolds. We then realise that the heroine, who sees things through the lens of her own feelings of inferiority completely misses the truth, which is to her a shock and relief at the same time.

Not least, the lush, rich descriptions of the house and the surrounding Cornwell country-side, and linking of the natural elements with the mood of the story makes this novel a truly satisfying reading experience. You may not want to read another novel for a long time.

Also of interest to readers would be Alfred Hitchcock's film Rebecca, which faithfully recreates the novel, with an outstanding cast.

Editorial Review:

Rebecca is widely regarded as Daphne du Maurier's finest novel. It tells the story of Manderley—an exquisite house with gardens down to the sea, its owner Max de Winter, and his new young wife. And of course, Rebecca.

Thanksgiving 3 out of 5 stars.

Megan Murphy met new resident and pediatrician Patrick Hunter when his lop eared rabbit roommate Tibbles tried to turn her skirt into lunch. She met him again when she went to his home, and returned said rabbit after finding him unaccompanied on the street. While visiting with Megan, one of Patrick's patients Tilly Coogin came and left her baby with them stating she would be back as soon as she could to get him. Patrick was going to call social services to intervene because with his patient load, didn't have time to care for little Tim. Megan told him they couldn't do that to little Timmy, so she would baby-sit him during the day, and then bring him to Patrick for the night shift. It wasn't until after she got his agreement that she realized that was his plan all along. Patrick had ulterior motives, as he had plans of getting to know Megan's body much better! As they settle into a routine of sorts with Tim, both of them start feeling like they have a little family. When both sets of parents invade for Thanksgiving, Megan and Patrick really start to get attached and feel like they belong together. They even start planning a wedding. Then Tilly shows up, and both of them are devastated that they have to give Tim up. They start to wonder - is what they had real? Can their fragile relationship survive the loss of Tim?

Megan and Patrick were funny together, and the rest of their families complemented the looney bin nicely.

Editorial Review:

When Megan Murphy discovers a floppy-eared rabbit gnawing on the hem of her skirt, she means to give its careless owner a piece of her mind, but Dr. Patrick Hunter is too attractive to stay mad at for long.

As for Patrick, he wants nothing more than to play house with Maggie—and make Thanksgiving dinner for their families.

But Megan has wept over one failed love, and she's afraid to risk her heart again. Can the good doctor help heal her heart?

Better Than the Previous One 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Though better than the previous one, this series is just getting too syrupy for me. And if Macomber is going to have a teenager as a character she should never have them putting on a housecoat - a robe, a cover-up, but nothing that sounds as old as something that their grandmother would wear.

This book covers the lives of Corrie and Roy, the local private investigator that have been receiving gift baskets and postcards with subtle messages. Seems that there is a little secret in their past that has now surfaced. Not too surprising, but most of the book is then tied up too neatly.

In the past I have enjoyed Macomber's books as a nice break from harder edged things, but the last two just make the women sound too much like victims to the whims of the men in their lives.

But, if you like your books with whipped cream and a cherry on top, well then, this is for you.

Editorial Review:

A New York Times Bestselling Author

In the fifth title of her New York Times bestselling series, Debbie Macomber returns to Cedar Cove, Washington, and the stories of its residents - including private investigator Roy McAfee and his wife, Corrie, who've been receiving puzzling anonymous messages in the mail.
