Way Too Scary for My Grandchildren 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this for my grandchildren 6, 8, and 10 for Christmas. When the 8 y.o opened it, his mother asked to see it and said it was too scary for any of them. I had not read it, but that evening proceeded to read the book. For my grandchildren, it is not age appropriate.

Lang lai le! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I loved this book. The illustrations are fantastic. It's funny, but I recently learn the Chinese have an expression, "lang lai le." This is said when there is an unpleasant noise, such as bad singing. It means "the wolves will come out." I would recommend this book for middle school age kids as it is rather scary. I also loved Gaiman's novel, Coraline. I would recommend also the Visions in Poetry version of The Raven illustrated by Ryan Price. Prices illustrations are very similar to McKean's. In fact I feel like it is Price's illustrations that prop up the poem.

Editorial Review:

Lucy hears sneaking, creeping,
crumpling noises

She is sure there are
wolves living in

Empowering 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A friend of mine gave me this book; he thought I would really enjoy the different personalities of the girls with the same name. I wasn't so sure. I really don't like teen angst or girls who are into cliques and fitting in, but boy was I wrong. I was immediately sucked into the story. The lead character, Jane, has to leave her home in Metro City due to a terrorist attack and finds her self in a small suburb of the city all alone. I loved watching Jane find her niche in the small town. She finally finds where she wanted to be: with the other Janes. It was interesting to see how determined she was to make friends with these girls even though they didn't want anything to do with her or each other for that matter. Each of the girls had something they wanted to do, none of them were a like, which eventually brought them all together. The girls decide to form a group called P.L.A.I.N. (people loving art in neighborhoods) and jazz up their suburb by making objects throughout the town into large pieces of art. This causes many of the adults in town to think that the kids are destroying their simple, small town life and impose strict rules for all teenagers. Now that all that is said, there is a whole side story with the main Jane, which I didn't see coming and it really exposed me to what teens go through when they have been involved in a major disaster and how they deal with other teens and adults. It really is a book about growing older, dealing with boys and real world problems. Some of the dialogue bothered me, it was boring at times and I didn't necessarily have to be told some of things that they said. But I guess that comes with the graphic novel territory. I highly recommend this book for girls around 13-16; these girls deal with things that most teenage girls can relate to. Overall I really enjoyed reading this book, it was a quick and easy read and for a person who doesn't read all that often it's a miracle! This book definitely got me in touch with my inner PLAIN Jane.

Editorial Review:

Noted young adult novelist Cecil Castellucci and artist Jim Rugg launch MINX with THE PLAIN JANES, a story about four girls named Jane who sit at the reject table at lunch.

When transfer student Jane is forced to move from the confines of Metro City to Suburbia, she thinks her life is over. But there in the lunch room at the reject table she finds her tribe: three other girls named Jane. Main Jane encourages them to form a secret art gang and paint the town P.L.A.I.N. -- People Loving Art In Neighborhoods. But can art attacks really save the hell that is high school?

Freeing slaves and fighting shady arms dealers 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Tintin is one of the most famous comic book characters in the world. Unfortunately he is not as well known in the U.S. Hopefully I can help change that. The Tintin albums were created by the Belgian comics writer and artist Georges Prosper Remi under the pen name Hergé. His first Tintin album "Tintin in the Land of the Soviets" appeared in the pages of Le Petit Vingtième on January 10, 1929 and his last completed album was "Tintin and the Picaros" in 1975/1976. The Tintin albums are primarily for children but they are written so that adults also greatly enjoy them.

Tintin is a Belgian investigative journalist who gets drawn into all kinds of dangerous and eventful adventures around the world. Already in the very first album "Tintin in the Soviets" he is aided by his talking dog, a fox terrier called Snowy. In Swedish and in French Snowy is called Milou. In "The Crab with the Golden Claws" he meets the grumpy but hilarious Captain Haddock. A lot of the best comic situations arise from Captain Haddock's bad temper in combination with his bad luck and above all his creative use of words. As a sailor Captain Haddock is expected to swear a lot but all swear words have been replaced by expressions like "billions of blue blistering barnacles", "you Mameluke", "Macrocepahlic Baboon", "odd-toed ungulate", "and troglodyte "," Pithecantrophus", but never real swear words. Another source of many comic situations is the genial but hearing-impaired Professor Cuthbert Calculus (Kalkyl in Swedish, Tournesol in French). Other prominent supporting characters are the incompetent twin detectives Thomson and Thompson (Dupond and Dupont), and the constantly joking and laughing but irritating insurance salesman Jolyon Wagg.

In this album from 1958 Tintin and Captain Haddock unexpectedly meets an old friend of Tintin, the former dictator from South America, General Alcazar. It turns out that General Alcazar is trying to purchase weapons from a shady arms dealer who is also illegally selling arms to two fighting parties in the Middle East. The son of the emir Ben Khalish Ezab (one of the fighting parties) the rambunctious Abdullah is staying with Captain Haddock (and Tintin) and is playing all kinds of tricks on everyone. To get away from this Arab Dennis the Menace and all his pranks they go see the emir himself and end up getting deeply involved in an incredible adventure. They also stumble upon an organization that is selling African slaves (slavery still existed in the Middle East and Africa in 1958). A lot of old crooks and friends from other books show up here, including Captain Allan, Rastapopolous, and the lovely but highly irritating Prima Donna and opera singer Bianca Castafiore.

This album is fast paced, action packed and very exciting and quiet interesting. It is difficult to put the book down even for an adult. The humor is superb and there are laugh out loud moments on almost every page.

It is my experience that American kids will love the Tintin albums once they have been acquainted with them (an album is a hardback comic book with the pictures in series). My kids love them and their friends love them as well. As a child, I read all of the Tintin books in Swedish, and as an adult living in the U.S., I am reading them again to my children, but this time in English. This book is intensely exciting and full of action and therefore it is one of my favorites, and one of my children's favorite. I highly recommend this Tintin album to young and old.

Brilliant, but a Little Slow 5 out of 5 stars.

(This review was written solely for vol. 2 of Monster, not vol. 3, where this review is also posted. I had no control over this; it was mistakinly posted as a review for vol. 3 by Amazon.com.)

Once I finished this second volume of Monster, I was amazed at how such a simple manga could achieve what this one did. The multi-tiered plot continues to get thicker, and the tension builds as the characters interact. Plus, the simple art style seems to add rather than take away, and in many ways legitimizes this story by taking away some of the exaggerated models found in most manga. And, as if I didn't have enough to make this good, the dialogue is top-notch and believable, which is key to me when reading manga as matching the words to the art is often mishandled, especially in translated manga.

The story, continuing from volume one, follows Tenma as he searches for the twin of the boy Tenma saved. But he's having a difficult time digging up information, and finding people to take him seriously. That's mostly because the twin does not have her memories from that time, and even goes by a different name... Later on, we also get to see how desperate Tenma becomes during his search for the killer of the families. He changes drastically, almost to the point of inhumanity, all in the efforts to stop a plague he believes he released on Germany.

To be honest, the continuing story in this volume slows a bit from the previous volume, which was slow itself. Though the first few chapters where Tenma searches for the twin is dramatic and in direct correlation with the last volume, it gets away from that when old characters are reintroduced and new ones are brought in. It doesn't make it bad in any way, but it seems to lengthen an already massive story, and it leaves me hungering for the third volume in this series so that things can get back to normal.

I can still recommend this manga above any other right now, though, as the story is as intelligent as I've ever found in manga. The technical details and nonchalant style of art doesn't weigh the plot down in any way, and the constantly building suspense makes you wish that they released graphic novels in larger formats (say four-hundred page hardbacks). To compare, Monster goes well alongside Death Note in terms of suspense, but because it has no fantasy elements, there is something about the horror in Monster that puts it above Death Note.

Editorial Review:

Brilliant doctor Kenzo Tenma risks his reputation and promising career to save the life of a critically wounded young boy. Unbeknownst to him, this child is destined for a terrible fate. Conspiracies, serial murders, and a scathing depiction of the underbelly of hospital politics are all masterfully woven together in this compelling manga thriller.

Looks like Amazon has incorrectly combined this with an encylopedia for some reason, as the cover photo, the publisher details, page count are all from the Berkley anthology and have nothing to do with a coffee table type graphic book.

An anthology of stories taking a look at a wide selection of the X-Men course, and as usual, managing to slip Wolverine in more than once. For this sort of book, the quality of the stories is actually pretty good, so certainly worth a look for X-fans.

A GLOWING, inventive book! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

What strikes me most about this Toon title is the wonderful personality in its pages. The lively, believable characters come to life in the comic. My children love this book and it's difficult find books my children will actually ASK to read again and again. Our beautiful, orange novel is already showing some wear because of how frequently it is taken off the shelf-- I may have to order another!

The Perfect book for early readers 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

"Otto's Orange Day" is a rare treat -- geared towards young readers, the book offers simple vocabulary and stunning graphics to keep kids engaged and, more importantly, pleased with their reading experience. I gave the book to my 7 year old cousin for his birthday, and he LOVED it -- the combo of comic book pleasure reading and fun, rhyming vocabulary was perfect for him. And, he completely understood the moral of the story. This book would be a fantastic gift for any young reader (and any parent yearning for beautiful presentation to accompany nightly readings).

Editorial Review:

When Otto the cat meets a magical genie, he knows just what to wish for: he makes the whole world orange! At first, this new, bright world seems like a lot of fun, but when his mom serves orange spinach for lunch, Otto realizes that his favorite color isn't the best color for everything. Fixing this mixed-up world won't be easy, though, because Otto already used up his only wish. To save the day, Otto will need his family's help, some quick thinking, and...a pizza? Otto is the creation of two master cartoonists who bring all the fun and magic comics can offer to early readers.

An Entertaining Graphic Novel with A Few Stumblings 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

To the knowledge of any person who has read a Star Wars comic, you get a grab bag of exciting adventure or a headache of boring drivel; the first volume of the Clone Wars graphic novel series is no different. Here, you get five different, self-contained stories (with the exception of Jedi master Quinlan Vos' story, which spans over into a few more volumes of the Clone Wars series) that have to do more or less with the entire Clone Wars saga, and events leading up to those that take place in Episode III.

Two of the five stories I really like; one is slightly interesting only in a whimsical sense; and the other two are just crap put into the graphic novel to thicken it up a little bit and give it some more pages so that the title 'trade paperback' may be more appropriate and fitting.

We'll start with the bad. The third story has to deal with Shaak Ti, Obi, Anakin, and a (slightly insane) clone trooper, the latter who insists on killing clone fetuses of Jango's stock. The Jedi knights Ti and Obi convince the trooper not to eradicate the unborn fetuses; I get the overall scientific/tolerance paradox this tries to feed readers, but...well, the stories sucks. Who cares? (This isn't a lecture on stem cell research or "designer babies".)

The other dumb story is where Obi and Anakin get stranded in the middle of an ocean on Kamino as their plane blows up over it. That entire storyline was just stupid, boring, and pointless.

Next up is a battle fought between Mon Calamari soldiers on an underwater vessel...? What's the point to this stuff?? This story was interesting in the sense that it deals with a species of aliens that we don't get to see much about, but the story is...moronic.

The cool stories, in my opinion, are the first and the last one. The first begins the story arc with Jedi master Quinlan Vos, his apprentice Aayla Secura, and Vos' to-be lover Khayleen. Vos and Secura duke it out with a Confederacy-sympathizer named Zenex.

The last story is truly a gem. It explains the fall of the Jedi Sora Bulq (who joined the leagues of Count Dooku) and his followers. Besides that fact, the main story focuses on the character Mace Windu, whom I absolutely love! (I like his witty sarcasm and overly seriousness that is so snaringly dire it's funny!) The artwork in the first and last stories is just breathtaking and amazing.

If you're looking to be entertained, then "The Defense of Kamino" is a worthwhile effort. However, you'll only enjoy it if you're willing to look past the couple shortcomings and stumblings. You'll only consider to be worthy of 4 or 5 stars unless you're a complete Star Wars junkie who loves anything George Lucas does (even if he sold his dentures). However, I'm no Star Wars junkie (in fact, SW sometimes can be downright corny, cheesy, and overly campy) and don't worship the holy ground the demagogue George Lucas steps on. But I thought the first volume of this series was worth a shot: it is.

Editorial Review:

For 25 years, fans have wondered about the Clone Wars. With the release of Episode II, audiences witnessed the events that started that epic conflict. Starting this year, LucasBooks is chronicling these historic events through comics, adult novels, middle grade fiction, audio books, short stories, and more - revealing the all-important events that occur between Episodes II and III in preparation for the latter's release in 2005. This volume collects the first issues of Dark Horse's ongoing Star Wars: Republic comic book that chronicle the Clone Wars, starting with issue #50.
