Good Plot and Story 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I had wished the author had gone further into the ending then she did, but all in all it was a riviting story and kept you turning the page--this would make a great movie if the plot were stretched further to make the ending more complete as far as "closure" goes. It just felt like it left you hanging but all in all a great story for it's age group.

Perfectly haunting 5 out of 5 stars.

My ten-year-old daughter and I loved this book! The story has so many elements that come together to make it a great read - mystery, conflict, good old-fashioned villain who eventually makes good, friendship, love, grief, and the perfect degree of thrill for the age group it is intended for. Throw in a couple cats and a lovely ending and what more can you ask for. We hated to put this book down.

The book does a particularly admirable job tackling the issues of death and grief, and also makes the reader consider the thought of a spirit world so perhaps this might make younger, more sensitive readers uncomfortable. The writing makes for a descriptive and realistic read despite the ghost story, but there are moments of adult language poking through 10-year-old Ashley's thoughts and I did think the sudden, seemingly complete turnaround of Ms. Cooper was a bit unusual. Nonetheless, the author has created a delightful book that will haunt the mind and heart and leave the reader with warm fuzzies in the end.

Editorial Review:

When Ashley discovers a turn-of-the-century doll it is just the first of several puzzling events that lead her through the hedge and into a twilight past where she meets Louise, an ailing child whose beloved doll has mysteriously disappeared.

More in the New York Times bestselling series!
More than 500,000 copies of the series in print!

The Grimms defend Mr. Canis in Ferryport Landing’s trial of the century!

This book sees Mr. Canis, dear friend and protector of the Grimm family, put on trial for past crimes. Considering that he’s really the Big Bad Wolf, he has a lot to answer for. Is there any truth to the story told by Little Red Riding Hood? What’s the deal with all that huffing and puffing? Will Mr. Canis be forced to answer for his crimes?

A kangaroo court of Everafters, led by the cruel Queen of Hearts, is determined to find Canis guilty and force the Grimms out of Ferryport Landing. Meanwhile, Puck has decided to focus more on his mischievous ways, making a few new troublemaker friends. So it’s up to Sabrina and Daphne to find evidence to save Canis—and their investigation may reveal more than they hoped.

Readers have embraced the first five books in the series, and this gripping courtroom drama won’t disappoint.

Entertaining with mystery, comedy and a range of emotions 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book 4 of the Sisters Grimm series continues the entertaining adventures of Sabrina and Daphne. There is humor, mystery, and some degree of romance, but on a child's level--nothing to scare kids away from the series. In this book, the reader and Sabrina become better acquainted with Sabrina's mother's "secret" life. Sabrina and Daphne basically must eventually choose whether to stay in the Grimm family business. Another entertaining read!

Editorial Review:

The Grimms take Manhattan in the fourth book in the New York Times bestselling series!

When fairy-tale detectives Sabrina and Daphne Grimm venture back to the big city to help a friend, they land in the middle of a big mystery. Puck’s father, King Oberon, has been murdered, and the Grimms suspect one of the many famous (and infamous) fairy-tale folk who call the city home. Can they find the culprit while coming to terms with their mother’s secret life? And will Sabrina ever accept her family’s destiny?

Funny and fast-paced, this series puts a fresh spin on girl-detective stories and has won an everexpanding number of fans.

Another delightful addition to this series 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

(Available in hardcover and paperback)

Sabrina and Daphne Grimm have had several narrow escapes from the evil organization, The Scarlet Hand, that is holding their parents hostage. The girls are hot on the trail of the organization when they meet Uncle Jake (another relative they didn't know they had). It seems Ferryport Landing residents don't remember him either. That's because Granny Relda made sure (with a little help from magic) everyone would forget him after he inadvertently was involved in an insane Little Red Riding Hood escaping from the asylum with a Jabberwocky.

If Sabrina and Daphne are to rescue their parents, they must rely on help from Uncle Jake and even Puck (who drives the girls crazy most of the time). But things get a little muddled when it is discovered that Little Red Riding Hood is bent on recreating her own lost family. That means that Grandma Relda and the family dog, Elvis, are in peril.

The novel is filled with appearances by many favorite fairy-tale characters. Prince Charming and the Queen of Hearts compete in a mayoral election; Snow White is angry with her former love; Canis (The Big Bad Wolf) may have met an unfortunate end; and Rip Van Winkle will make you smile. As for the other cameo appearances, you'll have to read the book to meet them.

And of course, questions are left unanswered for the next installment of The Sisters Grimm. Will Puck get to Faerie in time? Will Sabrina and Daphne's parents wake up from their forced slumber? Who is the head of The Scarlet Hand organization? Will Grandma Relda and Elvis be safe?

The next book will be released December 2007, so the wait won't be too long.

The Sisters Grimm series is a delight. It is in my opinion as good as Harry Potter. It's a fast read and filled with quirky characters and situations that are so much fun.

Armchair Interviews says: Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

A mystery story with a monstrous twist

In book three of the series, Sabrina and Daphne Grimm tackle their most important mystery: Who kidnapped their parents more than a year ago? Sabrina enters the hideout of the Scarlet Hand, the sinister group of Everafters who are keeping her parents prisoner. She has a chance to rescue her mom and dad but is foiled by the most famous fairy-tale character in the world. With the help of her little sister (who might be tougher than Sabrina realizes) and a long-lost relative, Sabrina finds a powerful weapon for fighting her enemies, and discovers that magic has a high price.

I'm only 5 or more chapters into it but it is a good book so far. wish he had gone back in time already but i guess all good things come in time and patience.

I bought this book for my 10yr old son. He loved it and my 2 daughters (9 & 14) loved it to. I also found myself reading it. Great Book wonderful values.

Funformative 4 out of 5 stars.

Fun and informative romp with plenty of imagination. Should have a dictionary of sailing terms. Lots of points to connect with the history involved - Churchill, Lord Nelson, the Nazis, etc. Passing it along through the family. They are devouring it.

Fabulous! I can't wait for the rest of my family to read it! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is FUN! What more could you ask for than time travel, Nazi's, and pirates all in one book? This book was very well written. It has many themes running through it, one of my favorites being respect for your elders and for your family. These are very much lacking in our world today. It was refreshing to see that someone hasn't forgotten...I can't wait to have my husband read it. And then, for our most favorite family treat of all, for my husband to read it to my children. I would defiantly recommend this book to anyone!

Editorial Review:

Ted Bell’s NICK OF TIME is an epic adventure story starring young Nick McIver, who uses a time machine to rescue two young children taken prisoner by pirates. Along the way, with courageous feats of derring-do, not to mention his resourcefulness, our young hero—“the most reliable boy in England”—changes the course of events in two time periods, the Napoleonic Wars and World War II.

Highly entertaining 5 out of 5 stars.

My girls, 8 and 10, thoroughly enjoyed this book. They are always begging for 'just a little bit more' every time we have to put the book down. They love making the connections to the fairy tale characters that they are familiar with from other stories.

An Awesome Series 5 out of 5 stars.

The Sisters Grimm series is an awesome series. When my mother first told me about it and I saw it, I thought it wouldn't be that cool so I didn't buy it. But then I got it from one of my friends and I read it and it was AWESOME! That immediately made me want to read the second book, so when me and mommie went to the bookstore and I saw the second book there, I really wanted to get it. Now that I got it and read it, I immediately want to read the third book.

I really liked how surprising it was when it seemed like some of the people at first I thought were going to be the bad guys turned out to be the good guys, and some of the good guys I liked turned out to be bad guys. An example was Principle Hamelin, when we thought he was helping Rumplestiltskin but then it turned out that Rumpelstiltskin tricked him, so Principle Hamelin became good again.

Editorial Review:

In book two of the series, the Sisters Grimm start school at Ferryport Landing Elementary. Daphne’s lucky enough to get Snow White for a teacher—she loves little people—but poor Sabrina’s stuck with Mr. Grumpner and a class of mildly psychotic sixth graders. When Mr. Grumpner is found hanging in a spider’s web, it is up to the Grimms to find the Everafter who did it. If only Sabrina can get over her distrust of all fairy-tale folk. But how can she trust those who just might be responsible for the disappearance of her parents?

Welcome back to the exotic world beyond the shadows...

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go -- especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil -- and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings -- and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City's Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.

Life couldn't possibly get any worse for Reed Brennan, could it?

Welcome to book eight of the PRIVATE series by Kate Brian.

When we left the Girls of Billings in AMBITION, Reed had just pulled of the coup of the year with the fundraiser to save the school, only to have her reputation smeared across campus via the technology of cell phones. Someone had caught her 5-minute make-out session with Dash McCafferty, Noelle Lange's on-again/off-again boyfriend.

Reed has just returned to Easton Academy after Thanksgiving break, and her first night back, she receives the shocking news that the Girls of Billing have voted her out. It wasn't a unanimous vote, but still, majority rules, and the only home she's ever wanted at Easton is no longer hers. She now knows how far Noelle will go to get back at anyone that crosses her.

So Reed finds herself in a disgustingly ugly small single in, dare she think it, Pemberly? But Reed packs her stuff and, with the help of her few remaining friends from Billings, moves. But it gets even worse. For her next-door neighbor is none other than her ex-boyfriend Josh Hollis' new girlfriend, Ivy Slade. But Reed isn't beaten yet. She's bound and determined to get back into Billings and clear her name of everything. Granted, she can't undo the error with Dash, but she can find out who is responsible for Cheyenne's death and who's been stalking her.

Yes, even with moving into Pemberly, Reed is still finding mysterious items of Cheyenne's in her room. Things keep appearing but Reed refuses to think she could possibly have anything to do with it. She keeps telling everyone that she had nothing to gain by murdering Cheyenne. Cromwell was already expelling her, so there was no reason to make it worse on Cheyenne.

REVELATION will let the reader finally know the truth of Cheyenne's death. As Reed investigates and gets closer to the truth, people that she thought she couldn't count on come to her aid. And those she thought were the ones she could always count on may turn out to be the ones she should've been watching out for all along.

Readers have to wait until February 2009 to find out the continuation of Reed and the aftereffects of the Easton Academy Holiday Dinner. However, those needing their fix of Easton Academy have the LAST CHRISTMAS: THE PRIVATE PREQUEL to look forward to on October 7, 2008. And the new series with Ariana Osgood (isn't she locked up?) is due out on December 30, 2008.

The biggest mystery of all...and Reed is dying to learn the truth.

Two months after Cheyenne Martin was found dead in her Billings House dorm room, exclusive Easton Academy is rocked by another stunning revelation: Cheyenne was murdered. No one knows who the killer is, but everyone agrees that Reed Brennan, who took over Cheyenne's role as Billings's president, gained the most from her death. Once the most powerful girl on campus, Reed is now powerless to stop her classmates' accusing whispers. Rumors begin to swirl that she killed Cheyenne.

And just like that, Reed is kicked out of Billings.

She's lost everything -- her friends, her home, her boyfriend -- and Reed knows the only way to get it all back is to figure out who really murdered Cheyenne. And she has to do it fast because the killer is still out there. The more Reed investigates, the more she uncovers. And as any Billings Girl knows...secrets can be deadly.
