Artemis Fowl 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Artemis Fowl is a genius. He's also a criminal master mind. He's also twelve. When faced with the loss of his family's fortune, he does what anyone would do. He kidnaps a fairy commando and holds her for ransom.

This is a great book for readers of all ages. While entertaining for most older elemtary school kids, the snappy dialog and and action packed plot twists make it a great read for adults too.

Fantastic book, a must-read for fantasy fans! 5 out of 5 stars.

I picked up Artemis Fowl from the library this past weekend (for the fifteenth time), and I must say, it is quite a good book. Eoin Colfer, the Irish author of the book, is a genius with an amazing imagination. It chronicles the tale of 12-year-old criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl, who has devised a scheme to rob the People, or fairies, of their gold in order to reclaim his family's billionaire status. His father has been deemed missing for the last several years, after he and 250,000 cans of cola aboard a ship were attacked by a stolen missile launched by the Russian Mafiya, who didn't want some westerner cutting in on their market. His mother is in a state of insanity, locked up in her bedroom night and day. In the course of Artemis's plan, he abducts LEPrecon (Lower Elements Police Reconnaissance) officer Captain Holly Short (notice my name :P) and holds her hostage in order to get the LEP's ransom fund. The rest of the People don't hold well with this and have many surprises for Artemis Fowl. I hope I didn't ruin the book for you, but why are you still reading this? Go buy this book now!

Editorial Review:

When a twelve-year-old evil genius tries to restore his family fortune by capturing a fairy and demanding a ransom in gold, the fairies fight back with magic, technology, and a particularly nasty troll.

Editorial Review:

It all began with a strange, mysterious correspondence left for authors Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black at a small New England bookstore. Written by three siblings, the letter told of their great-great-uncle Arthur Spiderwick and an unfinished tome filled with eyewitness accounts of creatures otherwise thought to be the stuff of legend. In the #1 New York Times bestselling serial the Spiderwick Chronicles, readers were enthralled by the account of the those siblings, Jared, Simon, and Mallory Grace, as they battled dwarves, goblins, elves, and a diabolical ogre in their efforts to hold on to their uncle Spiderwick,s life work. Now, through the combined efforts of the Grace children and authors Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black, Simon & Schuster is thrilled to present that work to you!

Beginning with a thoughtful and informative introduction, progressing through six exhaustive sections featuring thirty-one faerie species, and culminating with an addendum that includes observations supplied by Jared Grace, this long-awaited compendium to the worldwide Spiderwick phenomenon delivers enough information to satisfy even the most demanding faerie enthusiast. Not only will readers learn the habits and habitats of the fourteen fantastical creatures featured in the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestselling chapter books, but they will be delighted and astonished by an additional seventeen creatures. Also included are dozens of snippets from Arthur Spiderwick,s personal journal as well as cameos from a few series favorites.

With so much to offer, this book is destined to be pored over for generations to come!

Yes , Rabbits! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The title of my review refers to a conversation I had with a friend about his favorite book. We were in a book store browsing and he pointed to a book saying, "that's my favorite book." I was immediately curious, I deeply respect this guy and consider him the smartest person I know. I asked him what is it about, he said "Rabbits." Me: "Rabbits?" Him: "Rabbits" Me: "Rabbits?" Him: "Yes, Rabbits!"

In the end, I did not buy the book nor did I in the near future. WHAT A MISTAKE!!!

When I finally did decide to buy and read the book, I was enthralled. Is there a perfect book/read? I don't know, but here's another story.

I was reading Watership Down at work on a Friday. Time came to pack up for the day. After being half-way home I realized I forgot Watership Down. There was no way for me to go back and get it, and I was not going to be back at work for another two days. To make a long story short, I bought another copy of the book and finished it over the weekend.

Watership Down is a remarkable book. BUY/BORROW IT.

Editorial Review:

The covenant that was meant to keep the wizard wars at bay has been stolen, and Trinity must prepare for attack.  Everyone is doing their part -- Seph is monitoring the Weirwalls; Jack and Ellen are training their ghostly army; even Anaweir Will and Fitch are setting booby traps around the town's perimeter.  But to Jason Haley, it seems like everyone wants to keep him out of the action.  He may not be the most powerful wizard in Trinity, but he's prepared to fight for his friends.  When Jason finds a powerful talisman --a huge opal called the Dragonheart--buried in a cave, his role takes on new importance.  The stone seems to sing to Jason's very soul -- showing him that he is meant for more than anyone guessed.  Trinity's guardians take the stone away after they realize that it may be a weapon powerful enough to save them all.  Without any significant power of his own, and now without the stone, what can Jason possibly do to help the people he cares about -- and to prove his mettle?

Madison Moss can feel the beating heart of the opal, too.  The desire for it surges through her, drawing her to it.  But Maddie has other things besides the Dragonheart on her mind.  She has a secret.  Ever since absorbing the magical blow that was meant to kill Seph, she's been leaking dark powers.  Although Maddie herself is immune to magic, what would her friends think if they knew what kind of evil lay within her?  Trinity's enemies are as enthusiastic about her powers as she is frightened.  They think they can use her to get to the Dragonheart -- and they'll use anyone Maddie cares about to make her steal the stone for them.

Moral compasses spin out of control as a final battle storms through what was once a sanctuary for the gifted.  With so much to lose, what will Jason and Maddie be willing to fight for -- and what will they sacrifice?  Every man is for himself in this thrilling conclusion to the Heir trilogy.

McKinley Goes McKillip 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Mirasol the beekeeper has unexpectedly become Chalice to a land in turmoil. Somehow she must hold her world together, and convince others to accept a Fire Priest as Master. McKinley creates for us an alternative medieval manor house, with Master and Circle tied to their demiese through magical earthlines.

This is a beautifully written almost poetical story, but if one is expecting the Robin McKinley of Spindle's End or The Blue Sword expect disappointment. The story moves gradually and repetitively. A skimmer will find this comforting, but the careful reader is left wondering if this book was sufficiently edited, or if the author was perhaps forced to expand from novella to novel length. There is little dialogue and a much of the McKinley wit we have all grown to expect and love is missing. Reading Chalice, it felt as though McKinley was getting in touch with her inner Patricia McKillip. Much is described, and most of it exquisitely and richly, but not very much actually happens. Please don't misconstrue, I adore McKillip, but it was a bit jarring to find her style coloring a McKinley novel.

However, one puts all expectations aside, Chalice provides a truly magical journey, leaving the reader satiated with imagery that lingers long after setting the book down. One's mind savors the flavor as one's mouth would the honey from Mirasol's chalice.

Editorial Review:

As the newly appointed Chalice, Mirasol is the most important member of the Master’s Circle. It is her duty to bind the Circle, the land and its people together with their new Master. But the new Master of Willowlands is a Priest of Fire, only drawn back into the human world by the sudden death of his brother. No one knows if it is even possible for him to live amongst his people. Mirasol wants the Master to have his chance, but her only training is as a beekeeper. How can she help settle their demesne during these troubled times and bind it to a Priest of Fire, the touch of whose hand can burn human flesh to the bone?

Robin McKinley weaves a captivating tale that reveals the healing power of duty and honor, love and honey.

Even for Young Adults! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Books like this - Wizardology, Dragonology, The Wandmaker's Guidebook, and other "ology" books are the very thing a young person just starting to learn about magick and paganism needs to get started. Even a young adult (age 16-24) who is just getting their first lessons could benefit from books like these. They are very practical and well-written - much too well-written to be simply dismissed as books only suitable for children. I recommend all the books in this series to kids and adults alike!!

Editorial Review:

A dazzling compendium of all things magical - and wise teachings from Master Merlin for aspiring wizard apprentices!

Originally discovered in 1588, this remarkable text by history's most respected wizard is revealed to the world for the first time. Lavishly illustrated, WIZARDOLOGY is intricately designed and includes a series of hidden symbols that spell out a secret message when the code is deciphered.

Special features of WIZARDOLOGY include: * a glittering crystal ball-like jewel on the front cover * a world map of wizards' locations around the world * a "fairy flag" with one wish remaining * a Phoenix feather to aid in spelling flying charms * booklets explaining the proper use of spells, familiars, and potions * a removeable dragon pendant to dowse for mythical beasts * a pack of 8 removeable fortunetelling cards * a 48-page book of divination

Excellent format for a great story to interest your kids 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book as the first pop-up book for my three-year old son and two-year old daughter. I knew it could be a risk, due to the fragile nature of pop-up books, however this one is truly a treat for my children, my wife, myself and everyone else who has seen it!

I'd recommend the book (for self-reading) to older children who know how the fragile the pop-ups can be, but if you read to your kids I recommend this to anyone. It's a classic story which inspires a child's imagination and has an excellent graphical presentation of the story which really captures my children's attention while they're read to.

I only gave this book four of five stars due to the small portions through-out most of the book which actually has the written text. These are also created with mini-pop-ups, but are not incorporated into the whole width and length of the book. Instead the main text of the book is grouped into small 3-4 inch wide pages with small text. Not something you want if you read to your children at bedtime with minimal lighting.

However, don't let this prevent you from buying the book! It is worth the price and has some of the most fantastic pop-ups I've ever seen!

Editorial Review:

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is Robert Sabuda's most amazing creation ever, featuring stunning pop-ups illustrated in John Tenniel's classic style. The text is faithful to Lewis Carroll's original story, and special effects like a Victorian peep show, multifaceted foil, and tactile elements make this a pop-up to read and admire again and again.

Editorial Review:

Ex-cop Luther Malone, lifelong member of the secretive paranormal organization known as the Arcane Society, is waiting to meet Grace Renquist. Hired as an aura-reading consultant in the quest for a murder suspect, she’s got zero field experience. She’s from tiny Eclipse Bay, Oregon. She’s a librarian, for heaven’s sake.
As for Grace, she’s not expecting much, either, from Malone, who walks with a cane and isn’t so good with a gun. Nice résumé for a bodyguard.
But even before they reach their hotel in Maui – where they’ll be posing as honeymooners – Grace and Luther feel the electric charge between them. Problem is, they need to remain vigilant day and night; because it soon becomes clear there’s more going on here.

Rogue sensitives – operatives for the underground group Nightshade – are pouring into the luxury resort as if there’s a convention. Grace recognizes those dark spikes in their auras. And she understands how dangerous these people can be...especially with those para-hunters at their sides.
As Grace knows all too well, if you don’t control your powers, your powers will control you.
