Rachel Caine does it again! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I love the Weather Warden series so picked up Glass Houses, despite it being a YA novel. Like the Weather Warden series, it is fast-paced, tautly written, with excellent characters you care about. Rachel Caine is an amazing writer. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is the explanation for Claire's sticking in Morganville. If any real young girl were violently attacked in her dorm - and had parents that were still around - she would have called her parents immediately and LEFT. If Caine had said that Claire didn't have parents or anyone to really turn to, or even if there were some invisible force keeping her in the town (a vampire power of some sort) I would have believed it more. Throughout the whole book I kept wondering, why don't they just LEAVE? Again, a simple vampire ability to keep people in the town would have been more satisfying than the weak reasons given in the book. That said, it was a terrific read with great characters and I'm definitely getting the rest of the series.

Editorial Review:

From the author of the popular Weather Warden series. Welcome to Morganville, Texas.

Just don't stay out after dark.

College freshman Claire Danvers has had enough of her nightmarish dorm situation, where the popular girls never let her forget just where she ranks in the school's social scene: somewhere less than zero.

When Claire heads off-campus, the imposing old house where she finds a room may not be much better. Her new roommates don't show many signs of life. But they'll have Claire's back when the town's deepest secrets come crawling out, hungry for fresh blood.

What can you say at this point? These annuals are an inspiration, a resource, and an accurate read on where the bar is in fantasy, sci-fi, and concept art. A total feast, once again.

Spectrum 15 5 out of 5 stars.

This series gets better every year. My favorite artists always appear in each issue, and new artists make the cut, too. As an artist myself interested in fantasy art I find this annual absolutely essential. The color quality of the entries is top notch. SPECTRUM is always inspiring! It makes me work harder!

Missing Buffy 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I ordered the comic, because I was dying to find out what happened after the last episode. Though I am glad to know which characters are doing what,... I was thoroughly dissapointed in the comics. I have never been a comic book reader, and will remain that way. I am a huge Buffy fan and will always hope that the series will come back to TV, or go on in actual books.

Welcome back Buffy! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

There is no doubt Buffy is back in this comicbook sequel. A change of medium from tv to comicbook is a big change for any series. I was then relived to discover that Buffy, Xander and Willow and all the other characters we love from the tv series are back are as we remember them, they haven't undergone any major personality changes that sadly happen in other cartoon adaptions. Much of this thanks to Buffy's (as you know) creator Josh Whedon himself did the script. This is no third party version with "fanfic"-quality script... it's the real and original story... it could be called Buffy - Season 8 - Volume 1. Actually it IS called Buffy - Season 8 - Volume 1 :) .So is it all good? Here's a quick rundown of the proos and cons:

Positive:

* Buffy and the scooby gang are all back as we remember them thanks to Joss Whedon
* Cartoon medium let's the series "fly" with no tight budgets. It's big scale this time, and it's good for a change. Buffy organizes almost five hundred slayers this time, and Xander leads the military-like control center with large tv screens monitoring it all.
* Great art! The characters are highly recognizable, including some almost photo real covers for each of the 4 episodes.
* Original covers from the smaller issues are included.
* Good plot (no spoilers sorry)!

Negative:

* Cartoon Buffy can't be real Buffy.
* The cartoon medium and can be a bit confusing to follow, and you've got to focus not to miss some points. If you don't like cartoons you could subtract one star for this.
* The use of magic has become all-present. Portals, protection and even Dawn has been enchanted into a giant - fun or not. A bit overdone, especially since Buffy can't use magic she seems pretty dependent on others, but hey... we all love Willow anyway.
* It's big, but is it too big? The tvseries is about the slayer in an ordinary world where the supernatural have been kept hidden. It's now apparently all present. This might not appeal to everyone. As there is no school/university Buffy anymore.

Summary:

If you don't like cartoons you could subtract one star.
If you like small-town-down-to-earth-Buffy much better than world-scale-super-hero-Buffy and don't like too much magic you might subtract another star.
If you're not a Buffy fan yet, start with the tv-series.

For the rest of us I say: Welcome back Buffy! You deserve all five stars!

Editorial Review:

Since the destruction of the Hellmouth, the Slayers - newly legion - have gotten organized and are kicking some serious undead butt. But not everything's fun and firearms, as an old enemy reappears and Dawn experiences some serious growing pains. Meanwhile, one of the "Buffy" decoy slayers is going through major pain of her own. Buffy creator Joss Whedon brings Buffy back to Dark Horse in this direct follow-up to season seven of the smash-hit TV series. The bestselling and critically acclaimed issues #1-5 are collected here for the first time, as are their covers by Jo Chen and Georges Jeanty.

Not a child's book. Very well written. Parents Beware. 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Parents should reivew this book before allowing children under 12 to read. Don't believe all the positive reviews. Yes, these books are very well written, and bring to mind vivid images. But, are these the kind of images for young minds? Images of adults looking for 'illegal' children to capture and kill along with the families that harbor them. Images of the Poplulation Police searching private homes and mass killing of illegal children. The children in this series live in daily fear for their lives with little to no hope of ever being a part of society. Even their 'friends' could be enemies. They can trust no one. Adults who are their 'friends' abuse the children to be sure of their loyalty. It's seven books of dark, disturbing, death and betrayal.

These books are in a real-life setting with cell phones and internet. Unlike Harry Potter and the Eragon-Brisanger Series', The Shadow Children series cannot be dismissed as fantasy. Ms. Haddix should use her exceptional writing ability and pour it into adult novels.

Editorial Review:

Imagine a world where families are allowed only two children. Illegal third children -- shadow children -- must live in hiding. If they are discovered, there is only one punishment: Death.

cliff hanger extraordinaire 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Claire, as usual, is dealing with a multitude of problems--her parents have decided to move to Morganville, Monica is attempting to sabotage her college, she has to find the cure to save all the sick vampires, oh...and Amalie's father (the biggest, scariest vampire of all) has come to visit and take over the town. All in a normal day for a 16 (a few weeks to 17) year old genius. This book doesn't devil further in the psyche of the bad guys and friends like previous books. But, hey, get real, the books ARE ONLY about 250 pages long. This one does dig a little into roomie Eve's childhood, and Shane seems to be maturing a great deal (Finally!)

Honestly, I easily finished the book in one afternoon and evening--with a few disruptions. I absolutely adore this series by Rachel Caine, even more than her weather warden series. What truly gets my attention about her writing style is that she so easily picks up the mentality of a 16 year old. Granted, I've more than double that age, but reading this book brings me back to my own teen years. That awkward stage where you say the wrong things simply because he don't have the experience to know better. The times where you don't say anything at all and hope to fade into the woodwork because you feel your out of your element. Caine brings that through with her character of Claire without being obvious about it and without coming right out and saying it. A fabulous writing job with her characterization.

Now for the bad part---those horrible cliffhangers! Come-on! I'm dying here! he, he. Yea, yea, she's got to have us salivating for the next one, and it certainly working on me!

Editorial Review:

The wait is over. dig into the feast...

In the town of Morganville, vampires and humans live in relative peace. Student Claire Danvers has never been convinced, though—especially with the arrival of Mr. Bishop, an ancient, old-school vampire who cares nothing about harmony. What he wants from the town’s living and its dead is unthinkably sinister. It’s only at a formal ball, attended by vampires and their human dates, that Claire realizes the elaborately evil trap he’s set for Morganville.

I just love this series. It is nice to have another author that is interested in writing clean and wholesome stories. Go Stephenie. My dauhgters got me reading this series and I bought this set for my mother, who has now read all the books and she has been passing her copies around the rest of the family. I would highly recommend these books, couldn't put them down.

Best Series I Have Ever Read~! 5 out of 5 stars.

In August of 2007, I was searching for books to read after Harry Potter. I came across an article about the Twilight Saga being the next HP. I wrote the title of the first book down for reading at a later date.

Fast forward to May of 2008. When starting my first year of college, a girl in my Psychology class was talking with me about her favorite books. She mentioned Twilight, and said I could borrow her copy to read it. I accepted her offer and gave the book a try. I was hooked from the first chapter. I bought all the books for myself and am completely obsessed! I may buy this package just to have it! But seriously, if you haven't read this wonderful series, this is the best way to get the first 3 books. And don't miss the movie on November 21st!

Editorial Review:

Deeply romantic and extraordinarily suspenseful, Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse capture the struggle between defying our instincts and satisfying our desires. This stunning set includes three hardcover books, two full-color posters and exclusive tattoos, and makes the perfect gift for fans of this bestselling vampire love story.

Claire decides that Morganville is simply too dangerous as she offers herself to Amelie - the head vamp. Her first task is to begin studying under Myrnin, an ancient and very knowledgeable vampire.

He's also deranged half the time and sweet the rest of the time. He lives in a cage due to a virus sweeping through the vampire population. He (and now Claire) has been studying the disease in hopes of finding a cure.

There's also someone killing young girls in town and framing Shane for the murders. Claire's deathly worried about him, her studies, and the fate of the vampire world.

Can she save anyone - and, most importantly, can she save herself?

MIDNIGHT ALLEY is the third excellent installment in the amazing THE MORGANVILLE VAMPIRES series. Don't miss out on this one!

Enchanting Review: The Dead Girls' Dance 5 out of 5 stars.

THE DEAD GIRLS DANCE {Morganville Vampires Book 2}
RACHEL CAINE
Paranormal YA

Rating: 5 Enchantments

Claire is a brilliant college student stuck in Morganville. With possibly no way out...ever. Living with Shane, Michael and new best friend Eve, she is trying to attend college and live a halfway normal life. With vampires running the town, she gets driven to school and tries to lay low at night. Claire is a personable girl with a catty wit that will make you laugh out loud.

In book two of the series, Claire and her friends are all involved with new problems. Branching out from where GLASS HOUSES ended, Shane's dad is in for a visit after Shane called him. His dad is after blood, and it's not the human kind. With a mad man on the loose and killing vampires, everyone is pointing fingers at Claire, Michael, Eve and Shane. Oliver, the vampire manager of Common Grounds, is plotting revenge and is getting help from an unlikely source. Eve also starts a new job at a coffee shop on Claire's college campus. While indulging in coffee and talking to Eve, a college guy named Ian invites the girls to EEK frat houses' Dead Girls Dance. Michael, still not able to leave the house, makes a choice that will not be easily forgotten and will shock all of his friends in the house. When Shane gets into some trouble, because of dear ole dad, Claire and Eve decide to go to the frat party, with a seat-gripping chain of events all the way to the end.

THE DEAD GIRLS DANCE gripped me from page one, just as much, if not more, than the first book in the series. Ms. Caine knows how to get readers interested and keep them hanging on. From the antics of the spoiled-brat Monica to the ending at the frat party, this book is non-stop fun. It flows smoothly and is very hard to predict what's going to happen next. All the characters are well-developed; you can feel their emotions of having to live in this town that's overrun by vampires. THE DEAD GIRLS DANCE is one of the best vampire stories that I have read so far.

Ms. Caine is the author of another series called `The Weather Warden' and some other stand-alone titles. She continues to write books for the `Morganville Vampire' series. Her website, www.rachelcaine.com, has loads of information on her and her books. She also has a myspace page that includes some wallpaper from the books and a mailing list you can sign up for with the latest information on contests and new releases.
