Ten years ago an injury ended his stint in the NBA without him playing one professional regular season game, but though Myron Bolitar has always thought of what could have been he uses self deprecating humor to move on and mope over what was lost to fate. He spent time as the most visible undercover FBI agent in the country (remember this is pre Plame days) before deciding to become a sports agent.

New Jersey Dragons owner Chip Arnstein wants to hire Myron to find his longtime sports rival going back to the sixth grade and the ACC, Greg Downing, who has had an illustrious pro career. The word to the media is he sprained his ankle; but on the street and in the Dragons front office Greg vanished five days ago. Using his not so honed FBI skills, Myron investigates with clues leading to a corpse, gambling, bold thirsty point shaving mobsters and a bit of everything else. Myron realizes he never came to grips with the injury that ended his career before it began.

The reprint of the third Bolitar tale (see DEAL BREAKER and DROPSHOT) is a superb story that easily overcomes the initial credibility of an owner hiring a sports agent to play sleuth due to the hero. Myron is wisecracking throughout targeting himself more so than others, but as he gets closer to finding his firmer rival, he realizes the humor hides his disappointment. This is a terrific series that holds up nicely a decade plus since its first printing as this entry affirms.

I LOVE this book. I am an avid reader and a writer, and I'm fairly particular about the fiction I read. This book was amazing. The characters are so clearly drawn that they seem like real people. The plot kept me enthralled till the end. The ending itself surprised me (and I'm hard to surprise). Irving is a great writer; his skill at putting together words made the story move along mostly effortlessly. (Though I agree with one of the other reviews - some of the flashbacks were hard to follow at times.) None of his characters are "perfect," which makes them all the more likeable. Parts of the story are totally hilarious, while other parts are sad -- a lot like life. This is the best book I've read in years - and I've read a LOT of books in the past several years! I recommend it to everyone I know who reads a lot.

All the hallmarks of H.Coben are here: the plot is simply superb, the delivery is annoying but this time without extremes, the clowns are still bulletproof.

Riding Lessons Falls Short 1 out of 5 stars.

I loved Water for the Elephants and I am an equestrian so I knew I would love this book. How I wish it were true! It is rare that I give up on a book mid way through; in fact in the last year or ten this is probably the first. This book features a heroine who not only doesn't garner sympathy but her whining is so insufferable you want to just want her to shut up. But it is not just a case of her being merely unlikeable, that could keep you going. She simply is not interesting, a far worse crime for a major character in a book. The situation and characters have promise but they are sadly one dimensional both in their views of themselves and as thinly developed characters. Sara gets the horse scene right. You can smell the hay and feel the warm noses but this wasn't enough to keep me interested.

Weaker Entry in the Bolitar Series 3 out of 5 stars.

Harlan Coben is a great thriller author, and I really enjoyed the first three novels in his Myron Bolitar series -- DEAL BREAKER, DROP SHOT, and FADE AWAY. The fourth novel, BACK SPIN, is also enjoyable, but I found it a bit too convoluted for its own good.

BACK SPIN is probably Coben's first novel where he designed an ultra-complicated plot filled with one twist after another. The storyline is decent (it involves the kidnapping of a boy of two championship golfers), but I just found it somewhat clumsily structured, with a lot of different subplots that don't mesh very well together. All of the golfer characters struck me as flat and underdeveloped, which robbed the story of a great deal of drama and tension. The result is an interesting read, but not one that particularly excited me.

I think a medicore Coben novel is better than most other thrillers out there, but my advice is to avoid BACK SPIN unless you've read some other books in the Bolitar series. This book will probably not turn you into a fan.

Myron, who's also got the hottest young male tennis star, Duane Richwood, primed to take his first grand slam tournament, couldn't be happier. Clearing Duane's name should be easy enough. Duane was playing in a match at the time of Valerie's death.
