Good Selection, poor craftmanship 2 out of 5 stars.

I have gotten NUMEROUS paper and cardboard cuts from the actual books, which means your child can't really hold the book themselves because the edges are very sharp.

Good story selection though and I was happy they came in a small box to put them in her library all together.

Golden Books 5 out of 5 stars.

Bought these as a gift for a baby shower. They bring back memories from my childhood, so what a great idea to pass them along to the next generation. These are wonderful books and the pack makes a great shower present.

Product as advertised 5 out of 5 stars.

Purchased for a child for Christmas. She is just learning to read and I know she will love them. They were a great value. My only worry is that they seem to be more poorly put together then singles I have bought and might come apart after little use. Very nice set of books otherwise.

Great early-reader fun! 5 out of 5 stars.

I love Mary Anne Hoberman's "The Cozy Book", it is always a great bedtime story. So, when I found this title on Amazon, I couldn't resist. My son is 7 and enjoys reading, so this was perfect for us; he reads to me, I read to him, and we read the last verse together. The stories are cute and short, good if you only have a few minutes at the end of the day. The emphasis on reading is an added bonus.

You read to me, I'll read to you Very short Mother Goose Tales 5 out of 5 stars.

My seven year-old grandson introduced me to Mary Ann Hoberman's work. He loved reading to and with me. I'm a volunteer reading tutor and I use her books to teach first graders to read. They love it.

I highly recommend the books by Mary Ann Hoberman to excited kids about reading.

Editorial Review:

Introducing a unique book every one should have to help him or her learn to love reading. With type set in three columns and three colors for easy readability, each short, rhymed story in this collection is like a little play for two voices. They are about all kinds of thing: bears, birthdays, puppies, snowmen, friendships, and more. But no matter what their subject, they all feature traditional reading techniques-rhyme, rhythm, and repetition-and finishing with a satisfying refrain.

Bedtime stories? Some, not all. 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

As usual Richard Scarry's illustrations are wonderful. However, the first story in this book is about pirates and a "ferocious monster". Not sure why you would include a story like this before bedtime?? The other stories are fine, but if your child gets scared easily maybe the other stories would be better.

keeps attention of a three month old 4 out of 5 stars.

cute 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I thought this was an entertaining little book, but as some of the negative reviews suggest, it may be a little too dark for younger children. But then again, most under-10 children (if my nieces are any guide) are going to want books with more pictures and less text anyhow.

A Teachable Moment! 5 out of 5 stars.

As a teacher in a multi-lingual school, a copy of a book in ANY language other than English is like gold! Matilda is a great book for any child.
Most children today are avid movie goers. A book that "goes with" a movie has gotten my students reading, reading, reading! After viewing the video AND reading the book makes for a great compare and contrast lesson...putting the book in Spanish allows for me to expand that experience and the growth of my Spanish speaking learners!
I highly recommend this book to teachers working with non-English speaking students.

Editorial Review:

Matilda is a genius, but her parents treat her like a dolt, so she applies her untapped mental powers to get revenge on her parents and rid her school of the evil headmistress. "Dahl has written another fun and funny book with a child's perspective on an adult world. As usual, Blake's comical sketches are the perfect complement to the satirical humor."--School Library Journal.

Love it 5 out of 5 stars.

My 2 year old son is obsessed with trains - he loves this book. It is very short and the pictures are well drawn. This books shows the difference between a hopper car and a box car, etc so now when we see a real train he can tell me what kind of cars they are.

Freight Train/ Tren carga 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My oldest son loved this book. It was his favorite when he was little. It builds on vocabulary; you can count the cars, name the colors, and look at different scenarios. I learned a lot about trains by reading this book to them. I am raising my children bilingual and when I found it in English and Spanish I knew I had to get it for them. It also helped me remember the words in Spanish, which I had forgotten. I must have for any child that likes trains. Donald Crews again has delighted us with a masterpiece.

Wonderful early childhood book. 5 out of 5 stars.

Freight Train/Tren de cargaSimple words with simple images. You can hear the "click clack" of the train coming down the track, the chugging sound of the steam engine, and the sound of the horn as it approaches and then moves away. My daughter loved this book before she could even say the words.

Things Every Child Should Know 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As a child I read these wonderful stories, read them to my child and now he's reading them to his children. How can you get through life not knowing how the Elephant Got His Trunk or how the Camel Got His Hump. In these days of uncertainty, these questions beg to be answered. Even now, and I'm 60, I can quote passages from this book to unenlightened friends and have gotten some of them to read this to themselves and grand children. For so many years, Kipling was out of favor, it's nice that a new generation of children are reading these wonderful stories.

Just So Stories for Little Children 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Very poor quality. There are symbols and characters in the text. Also, there are picture captions inside the text with no pictures. There are page numbers and the book title in the middle of the text. The first letter beginning each story is missing. No stars, sorry, even though I had to give them one because the computer won't let you do it otherwise. I did read these to the children, but wow, it was hard figuring out what to leave out and what to leave in because the pictures (that aren't there) have captions in the text. Really bad.

Editorial Review:

Kipling's own drawings, with their long, funny captions, illustrate his hilarious explanations of How the Camel Got His Hump, How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin, How the Armadillo Happened, and other animal How's. He began inventing these stories in his American wife's hometown of Brattleboro, Vermont, to amuse his eldest daughter--and they have served ever since as a source of laughter for children everywhere.

Editorial Review:

Meet Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, the unforgettable boy-hero of Ender's Game--winner of the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award for Best Novel--and enter his Universe through this collection of stories.

"The Polish Boy" is John Paul Wiggin, the future father of Ender. In the years between the first two Bugger Wars, the Hegemony is desperate to recruit brilliant military commanders to repel the alien invasion. They may have found their man--or boy--in John Paul Wiggin....

In "Teacher's Pest"-a novella written especially for this collection--a brilliant but arrogant John Paul Wiggin, now a university student, matches wits with an equally brilliant graduate student.

"The Investment Counselor" is set after the end of the Bugger Wars. Banished from Earth and slandered as a mass murderer, twenty-year-old Andrew Wiggin wanders incognito from planet to planet as a fugitive--until a blackmailing tax inspector compromises his identity and threatens to expose Ender the Xeoncide.

Also reprinted here is the original award-winning novella, "Ender's Game," which first appeared in 1977.

Disappointed: a dissenting voice 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was looking forward to receiving this book, following rave reviews and awards. But both I and my twin nearly-five-year-olds have been very much disappointed, and are unlikely to finish the second book (or even start the third) in this three-volume compilation.

While the theme and content (a quest to rescue a baby dragon, subsequent adventures with dragon) was extremely appealing given this audience's passions, the poor execution of this story neutered the otherwise promising tale.

The first person narrator describing a third person protagonist (the protagonist is "my father" in each sentence) is a tortured device which annoys, and adds nothing (it's not as though this relationship ever plays a role in the story) and a red herring / non-sequitur is the informant cat.

There was little characterisation, so we didn't really get a sense of the heroic adventure that the plot called for and consequently, we failed to become engaged. And to this post-Pippi Longstocking generation there was a certain anticlimatic lack of ingenuity in the uses to which the backpack contents were put.

Most disappointing for me was the artlessness in the telling. I longed for language that would stretch or bounce or play, given all else that was missing in the book. But it wasn't there.

On the plus side, once the protagonist reaches the island, the adventure paces well with a single digestible adventurelet in each chapter. The final chapter worked well too, where the animals all band together in one last-ditch attempt to prevent the rescue.

Admittedly, they're reasonably bright kids - it could be that it would suit a younger mind. If we get through the second (and third) volumes, I'll post an update.

BTW this edition has pages that are more a paperback than a hardback quality.

Editorial Review:

The classic fantasy trilogy of Elmer Elevator and the flying baby dragon has delighted children and their parents for generations. Now, on the occasion of their fiftieth anniversary, Random House is proud to bring the three timeless tales together in one beautiful commemorative edition, complete with the original delightful illustrations.  A Newbery Honor Book and an ALA Notable Book, My Father's Dragon is followed by Elmer and the Dragon ("rich, humorous, and thoroughly satisfying"*) and The Dragons of Blueland ("ingenious and plausible, the fantasy well-sustained"*).  Each story stands alone, but read in succession, they are an unforgettable experience.*Library Journal, starred review

Mouse Tales 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

There are seven short tales, all involving mice, and bookended by a father mouse who is telling these stories to his children at bed time, one per child. The seven stories included are: The Wishing Well, Clouds, Very Tall Mouse and Very Short Mouse, The Mouse and the Winds, The Journey, The Old Mouse, and The Bath. Of the seven, my favorite is The Wishing Well as it takes an unusual and humorous approach to the usual wishing well story. The most disturbing of the stories is The Journey because it involves replacement feet. Knowing Sean, I think his favorite will be The Bath because of the absurd bath/flood the little mouse creates just to get clean.

Mouse Tales 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

ISBN 0064440133 - Based on the reading level, Mouse Tales is for 6-8 year olds, but I think younger children will enjoy it quite a bit, as well.

Papa tucks his seven boys into bed and promises them seven stories, so long as they promise to go right to sleep. Once they've promised, he starts with The Wishing Well... and tells the seven stories, ending with The Bath. His boys have all fallen asleep by then and Papa says good night.

The stories are all so short that just recapping them would be pretty much the same thing as retelling them! There are great possibilities within the very few pages of this book. With simple words and a fairly large font, the stories can be read by a child easily. He or she will find them fun and engaging. They can be read to a child by an adult, who might like to explain the deeper meanings of some of the stories (for instance why, once the mouse in The Wishing Well helped the well, all of her wishes came true). But, much to my surprise, there's a little Aesop's Fables feel to the stories, which might be one of the most unexpected ways to read this little book - as an adult! This isn't true for every story - if it is, I haven't found the message in the story of the mouse who wears out his feet and gets new ones. Still, all around a charming set of bedtime stories with nicely done illustrations that don't take up three-quarters of every page.

Editorial Review:

Seven mouse boys lie awake one night...

. . . And they ask their Papa to tell them a story. Papa does better than that -- he tells them seven stories, one for each boy.

Fun Supernatural Prom Stories With Too Many Loose Ends 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Reviewed by Jocelyn Pearce
on 07/13/2008

These are not your typical prom nights. Each of the five authors has written a spooky, supernatural story about Prom. Some great authors are included in this collection, and it's certainly worth reading! The stories include a range of supernatural characters, from vampires to demons to fortune-tellers, and one is even based on a work by Edgar Allen Poe. They're all absorbing and interesting.

So much so, in fact, that it would be nice to see more with each story. Though each of the stories was very well-written and included awesome characters, they felt incomplete. I want whole novels, not short stories! Expanding these stories into novels would be great; as they are, though, there are too many loose ends. Perhaps the problem with this book is that I loved it too much!

While it is an enjoyable read, it would be even better to see these short stories expanded on in the future.

Editorial Review:

In this exciting collection, bestselling authors Meg Cabot (How to Be Popular), Kim Harrison (A Fistful of Charms), Michele Jaffe (Bad Kitty), Stephenie Meyer (Twilight), and Lauren Myracle (ttyl) take bad prom nights to a whole new level—a paranormally bad level. Wardrobe malfunctions and two left feet don't hold a candle to discovering your date is the Grim Reaper—and he isn't here to tell you how hot you look.

From angels fighting demons to a creepy take on getting what you wish for, these five stories will entertain better than any DJ in a bad tux. No corsage or limo rental necessary. Just good, scary fun.
