Editorial Review:

Young Jeremy Jacob is plucked from obscurity while innocently constructing a sand castle and is thrust into a brand-new life as a pirate. Captain Braid Beard and his crew recognize Jeremy as an exceptionally talented digger and they happen to be in desperate need of a digger to help them bury a treasure chest. Jeremy thinks a pirate life sounds like fun, as long as he’s back the next day in time for soccer practice, and so he goes along with the ragtag group of seafaring thugs (with hearts of gold, naturally). And while Jeremy adores the pirates’ lack of table manners and opposition to vegetables, he comes to realize that a life away from his parents lacks some of the niceties to which he’s become accustomed. Nobody tucks him in at night, for instance, and the only book available to read is a treasure map. Melinda Long’s story, narrated with a sense of boastful exaggeration by Jeremy, is full of a sense of high adventure that's lovingly evocative of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tales. David Shannon's illustrations, full of a goofy vibrancy, are a perfect accompaniment to the story. (Ages 4 to 8) --John Moe

As the once-human beasts advance, I try draining magic from the air but there's virtually nothing to tap into. In my own time, these creatures would have been simple to deal with. Here, it's going to be difficult. The lead werewolf snaps at the female. With a howl, she leaps. I unleash the spell as she jumps. It's a choking spell. If it doesn't work, I won't know much about it - she'll be on me in a second, and I'm defenseless.

With Beranabus, Grubbs, and Kernel off exploring the universe of the Demonata for clues about the Shadow behind the demon invasion, Bec is left behind in Carcery Vale for safekeeping. But with Dervish's health on the decline, Lord Loss knows she's the most vulnerable piece of the Kah-Gash. As hoards of demons, werewolves, and zombies advance, Bec needs to figure how to reach Beranabus with crucial information about the Shadow-fast.

There's this boy. Let's say he's somewhere between nine and thirteen years old or so. You'd like to see this kid get creative. You'd like to see him get some exercise. You'd like to see him get out from in front of the television. And you'd love for him to be motivated enough to find some stuff to do on his own. This boy NEEDS The Big Book of Boy Stuff!

The Big Book of Boy Stuff has all the important information that boys just have to know. Collected here for the first time in one place, it holds the answers to these timeless questions: What do I do if I get a bean stuck up my nose? How can I make lightning without killing myself? Where can I find new practical jokes to play on my friends and family? What is the best way to poop outside? How do I tell a girl I like her? WHY would I tell a girl I like her? How many mosquitoes does it take to suck all the blood out of a person? . . . and many, many more! This big, thick, durable book includes fascinating chapters on gross stuff, magic, emergencies, fireworks, games, experiments, jokes, activities, insults, pets, flying things, and, of course, duct tape. This is perhaps the greatest book ever published!

Boy's Guide to Becoming a Teen 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for my 10 year old. I was very pleased with the way it explained things. I read the book to him and answered any questions that he had as we went along. He did not have very many, because it was explained very well. However, there is a part in the book I did not read to him, which is the reason why I did not let him read the book by himself. The part touches on sex, which I don't have a problem with except for the fact that it explained oral and anal sex, and I don't feel like a 10 year old should know about things like that.

My 7.5 year old stepson requested this from his school book fair. He spent days devouring it and reading us excerpts. He LOVED it. I think it makes a great read for boys aged 6-13.

Want to learn how to fly a helicopter? 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A quick and easy read for kids looking to impress their friends and survive a few sticky situations.

Learn how to fly a helicopter, tie a knot, start a fire, and make an awesome paper airplane (and much more).

Some of the tips and tricks will be very useful in everyday life, like treating bee stings and taking a great photo. Others, like getting out of quicksand or fighting a crocodile will never be needed by most readers!

Editorial Review:

How to do almost anything in one handy book.

Found yourself in a sticky situation? Inside you'll learn how to escape quicksand (p. 40), build a raft (p.41), start a survival fire (p.99), or fly a helicopter (p. 11).

Want to impress your friends? Now you can rip a phonebook in half (p. 35), hypnotize a chicken (p. 56), or read their minds (p. 73).

Boring Saturday afternoon? Not anymore when you find out how to make a waterbomb (p. 79), a boomerang (p. 95), or a volcano (p. 88).

And loads of other keen things you need to know how to do!

Pirates! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I totally adored Long and Shannon's original book, and by golly this is definitely a worthy sequel! Jeremy Jones seems to be up to a fairly ordinary afternoon keeping an eye on his sleeping baby sister. But then, aye, those crazy, loveable pirates return to dig up their treasure in order to buy a new ship. But those pirates are loud and soon the baby is screaming. This has all the charm of the original book and a more organized plot that puts all these fun characters into a good, tight storyline. These scurvy sea dogs may be able to tackle the high seas, but dealing with babies is quite a challenge for them! Shannon's illustrations are as wonderful as ever and I completely fell in love with Long's new story. I hope this is the beginning of a good pirate series, because it truly is a fu

Editorial Review:

When the pirate crew turns up at Jeremy Jacob's house and accidentally wakes his baby sister, that wee scallywag howls louder than a storm on the high seas. Sure, there's buried treasure to be found, but nobody's digging up anything until Bonney Anne quits her caterwauling. So, quicker than you can say "scurvy dog," Braid Beard and his swashbuckling pirates become . . . babysitters? Blimey!
This hilarious companion to How I Became a Pirate reveals that minding the nursery can be even more terrifying than walking the plank--especially if you're a pirate.

Great for little boys not wanting to give up their diapers 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for my son who is 4 years old and is not interested at all with learning to use the potty. He loves books so I thought I would get this to show him that other little boys are being potty trained. Now, the book is adorable and Henry with his teddy makes potty training less scary. My son will sit on the potty but that's about it. But it's a first step!

Editorial Review:

A toddler's graduation from diapers to the potty is always a very important moment--and one to make parents and toddlers proud! In this book, Henry needs to have his diaper changed so he can go out and play. Then Mom and Dad bring a big box home, and Henry is anxious to open it up and see what's inside. Is it a rocking chair? A bed for Teddy? No, it's a potty--which means it's time for Henry to graduate from diapers. This gentle and humorous little story is charmingly illustrated and told in verse. Little boys will enjoy looking at the pictures and having the story read to them. Meanwhile, they'll start getting the idea that it's time for them to grow up, exactly like Henry. So that at last, they'll be able to say: "I'm off to the potty, No more diapers for me! And I feel great, I am proud of ... ME! Here's a pleasant and effective new way to begin a child's toilet training. Barron's also publishes a potty book for a little girl, starring Hannah. (Ages 1-4)

Editorial Review:

Anthony Horowitz's enormously popular series about the world’s premier teenage spy, returns for another round with secret agent Alex Rider fighting ingenious villains and charming every girl he meets. Eagle Strike, Horowitz’s fourth fictional foray into the world of British spy agency MI6, starts out calmly enough as Alex and his lovely companion, Miss Sabina Pleasure, vacation with her family in the south of France. But before you can say Goldfinger, Alex spots his old nemesis, renowned assassin Yassen Gregorovich, on the beach. What Alex discovers is a plan so diabolical that it makes all of his previous adventures seem like a stroll in the Queen Mum’s garden. Alex must fight to keep Gregorovich from executing the plans of a mysterious and murderous madman--an operation code named "Eagle Strike." He will just have to face down a few minor complications first: a virtual reality game that inflicts real pain; a fleet of Porche 911 GT3-driving hit men; and even a near fatal brush with death aboard the most famous aircraft in the world, Air Force One. But he’ll persevere, or his name isn’t Rider: Alex Rider. Eagle Strike, like all of the ridiculously fun Alex Rider adventures, is a pure guilty pleasure from start to finish. Even the most reluctant of readers won’t be able to resist Alex’s Bond-like ingenuity and charisma. Anthony Horowitz is a master of pacing, and as Alex swings from one cliff-hanging chapter to the next, Horowitz proves that you don’t have to be Shakespeare to pen a crackerjack plot! --Jennifer Hubert

Alex Rider Skeleton Key 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the best Alex Rider books. Its fast, fun and should be made into a film. Anthony Horowitz seems to be able to pull the reader into the story.
I am hooked on the whole Alex Rider, Young James Bond and Jason Steed books. Good clean fun with good guys and bad guys.

Alex Rider vs Young James Bond vs Jason Steed vs Cherub 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a great story, again Anthony Horowitz has us on the egde of our seats.
The story has a very similair theme to the Young James bond book Hurricane Gold. In Skeleton Key Alex Rider and Hurricane Gold Young James Bond, both teen hereos are on a hot tropical island owned by a villian, both villians want to adopt the young teen heros, despite the youngsters trying to spoil there plans. Both villians let the boys go. However both are fast paced and good reading. Its a shame they have followed the same pathm but if you are into Alex Rider, Jason Steed, Cherub and Young James Bond this is still a great book.

Editorial Review:

Working as a secret agent for Britain’s most exclusive agency, Alex Rider has seen it all. He’s been shot at by international terrorists, stood face-to-face with pure evil, and saved the world—twice. But fifteen-year-old Alex is about to face something more dangerous than he can imagine: A man who’s lost everything he cared for—his country, his son—a man who has a nuclear weapon, and will stop at nothing to get his world back. Unless Alex can stop him first...
