Ping - an old story still as popular today 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book because I had lost the school library's copy and it was my husband's favourite book as a child. When it arrived I read it to every class from Kindergarten to year six and they all loved it. It was a good lead into the Beijing Games but it also led into a study of cormorants, river dwelling, mapping, relationships and counting.I can highly recommend this ageless story.

Editorial Review:

The tale of a little duck alone on the Yangtze River, The Story About Ping is a sweet and funny book with wonderfully rich and colorful illustrations. On a day like any other, Ping sets off from the boat he calls home with his comically large family in search of "pleasant things to eat." On this particular day, he is accidentally left behind when the boat leaves. Undaunted, the little duck heads out onto the Yangtze in search of his family, only to find new friends and adventures--and a bit of peril--around every bend.

The exceptional illustrations bring the lush Yangtze to life, from Ping's family to the trained fishing birds he finds himself among to the faithfully rendered boats and fishermen. Certainly intended to be read aloud, The Story About Ping deserves a place on every young reader's (or listener's) shelf. (Picture book)

Editorial Review:

Todd Parr likes to keep things simple. In his world, there isn't much gray area between good and bad... and in his small, square books, blazing with primary colors and positive "it's okay to be you" reinforcement, there is no gray at all! Do's and Don'ts could be called an etiquette primer--sort of. "Do change your socks every day," he tells us. "Don't make anyone smell them," he adds. "Do have lunch with a monkey," but "don't eat his bananas." "Do brush your teeth after every meal," but "don't brush with peanut butter." You get the idea. With all of the titles in this series--Things That Make You Feel Good, Things That Make You Feel Bad, This Is My Hair, and The Okay Book--young children will no doubt giggle at Parr's childlike, funny illustrations of various slapstick scenarios as well as his references to smelly feet, food in the hair, chocolate-covered bugs, worm stew, and the like. Sometimes all you need is a little silliness, and these bold, colorful books fit the bill. (Baby to preschool)

Editorial Review:

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring because of a nasty, contagious illness--even the mouse is in bed with a miserable cold. Only brave Madeline is up and about ... competently running the household until she hears a knock at the door--a visitor whom she suspects might be Santa Claus. Instead it is a magical-rug merchant, with 12 red carpets that Madeline thinks would be perfect for the 12 girls and "For our ice-cold in the morning feet." She procures a few francs from Miss Clavel and pays the merchant. Without his rugs, however, he is very chilly, and he feels quite silly for having sold them. He returns to the old house (still covered in vines), where Madeline helps him thaw out, and he works a little Christmas magic--sending the girls on cross-country carpet rides to surprise their parents. Of course, Miss Clavel's bell breaks the spell and they're all back in time to celebrate the New Year. (Ages 4 to 8) --Karin Snelson

As expected from Demi a beautifully illustrated (clean colored and detailed) book, a simple, sweet story with a gentle message. Ages 3 1/2 +

A great introductory book to different cultures. Can also be used as a jump start to many conversations (doing your best, being brave, honesty, growing seeds, seed viability etc)

The Empty Pot - A Lesson About Honesty 5 out of 5 stars.

"The Empty Pot" is a nice Chinese fable that teaches an important lesson about honesty.

The Emperor was getting old and wanted to choose one child in the kingdom to succeed him. He posed a challenge for the children. He gave each child a flower seed. Whoever grew the most beautiful flower within one year would become the new emperor.

For one year, all of the children spent their time growing the most beautiful flower. Everyone was doing good, except for this one child named Ping who could not seem to get his flower seed to sprout a flower.

When the time comes to present each child's flower to the Emperor, Ping brings the empty pot with his flower seed and is declared the new Emperor. To find out how Ping becomes the Emperor, just read the book. It will surprise you.

She heads off on a round-the-U.S.A. journey to find all the materials she needs to stock her kitchen: New Mexico for clay (mixing bowl), Washington for wood (rolling pin), Hawaii for sand (sand? to make the glass for her measuring cup, of course). In joyful art filled with small vignettes and sly humor, two-time Caldecott Honor winner Marjorie Priceman takes us on a cross country journey by riverboat, taxi, bus, train, plane—all in search of the natural resources of our country. Nice book 3 out of 5 stars.

I loved very much this book, it's well written and the illustrations are wonderful and it's a great way to show Paris to children.

Didn't Care for the Story 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is beautifully illustrated and the concept behind the picture book is creative (similar to "Where's Waldo" and liked the notations of the streets in Paris). However, I disliked the story or lack of. Basically, the story follows a boy who lost items throughout the book. There was no climax or resolution. I didn't think this book was well written and returned it.

Beautiful artwork 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this for my grandkids who are about to enjoy a trip to Paris. The artwork is taken from real Paris streets, sights, and neighborhoods. Even though the story is geared for my youngest(age 7), the pictures will give my oldest(age 11)and idea of what to expect.

Perfect - so evocative and beautiful. 5 out of 5 stars.

Whether you've been to Paris or not, this book will make you homesick for the city. The detailed, crisp drawings are almost more important than the story. I could look at Adele and Simon for hours.

Editorial Review:

When Adele walks her little brother Simon home from school he loses one more thing at every stop: his drawing of a cat at the grocer's shop, his books at the park, his crayons at the art museum, and more.

Editorial Review:

Illustrated by Mike Benny

The White Table is set in many mess halls as a symbol for and remembrance to service members fallen, missing, or held captive in the line of duty. Solitary and solemn, it is the table where no one will ever sit.

As a special gift to her Uncle John, Katie and her sisters are asked to help set the white table for dinner. As their mother explains the significance of each item placed on the table Katie comes to understand and appreciate the depth of sacrifice that her uncle, and each member of the Armed Forces and their families, may be called to give.

It was just a little white table...
but it felt as big as America when we helped Mama put each item on it and she told us why it was so important.

"We use a Small Table, girls," she explained first, "to show one soldier's lonely battle against many. We cover it with a White Cloth to honor a soldier's pure heart when he answers his country's call to duty."

"We place a Lemon Slice and Grains of Salt on a plate to show a captive soldier's bitter fate and the tears of families waiting for loved ones to return," she continued.

"We push an Empty Chair to the table for the missing soldiers who are not here..."

Nice story but poorly presented. 3 out of 5 stars.
12 of 18 people found this review helpful.

A German woman cleans her house in preparation for Christmas. Then she invites her neighbors, farm animals, and wild creatures into her home to enjoy her tree. However, she never thinks to invite the spiders in. On Christmas Eve when the Christkindel comes, the spiders ask him to let them into the house to see the tree, which he does. As the spiders explore the tree, they cover it with their webs, which the Christkindel tranforms into beautiful tinsel. Thus explaining the tradition of tinsel.

I enjoyed the story but found the presentation flawed. Germans use comforters on their beds and not patchwork quilts, yet the woman is shown shaking out a patchwork quilt. In Germany, the Christkindel (Christ child) is the one who brings gifts on Christmas Eve, but he is portrayed looking like a slim, diminutive, American Santa Claus. Also, only a fraction of the many spiders shown have the requisite number of eight legs.

I enjoyed the story but will search for a different version of it before purchasing a copy for myself.

Editorial Review:

All her life, Tante had heard tales about marvelous happenings on Christmas Eve. Animals might speak aloud. Bees might hum carols, or cocks crow at midnight. Tante wished she could witness a bit of Christmas magic, too.

Everybody loves Christmas at Tante's. The old lady decorates a wonderful tree and makes certain to have something for all who come to visit, be it the nearby village children or the shy animals of the pine forest. The only creatures Tante overlooks are the spiders she has swept out of her cottage while cleaning. But the curious spiders want to come inside and see Tante's tree, too. When a midnight visitor lets them into the old lady's home, they unknowingly spin Tante the very gift she has longed for--a gift that has inspired the draping of tinsel on Christmas trees ever since.

This Old World tale about the warmth and wonder of Christmas will leave children enchanted with the magical possibilities of the season.

An Absolute Treasure! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I can't believe I missed reading this growing up. My daughter and I just read this together. It was wonderful, and we both loved it. She likes to read books over and over, and I think she will appreciate reading this even more when she gets a little older. She loved the idea of secrets, twins, and the transformation of Mary. Having not had similar experiences to the characters in the books, such as losing close family members, she didn't quite understand the concept of a person having to learn to love and cry.

I loved the symbolism of the young girl blossoming with the garden, the relationship she develops with her cousin, the flower imagery, and the many little details like the birds nesting in the chairs in the run-down part of the manor. The mystery of this story is also wonderful and very suspenseful.

I think many adults who missed reading this growing up would enjoy this book. And I think all children, both boys and girls, should read this at least once. It is an absolute treasure.

Editorial Review:

When orphaned Mary Lennox, lonely and sad, comes to liveat her uncle's great house on the Yorkshire moors, she finds it full of secrets. At night, she hears the sound of crying down one of the long corridors. Outside, she meets Dickon, a magical boy who can charm and talk to animals. Then, one day, with the help of a friendly robin, Mary discovers the most mysterious wonder of all--a secret garden, walled and locked, which has been completely forgotten for years and years. Is everything in the graden dead, or can Mary bring it back to life
